Wakefield Westgate

Train station

👍👍 I recently had to go to Westgate from Dunbar for my mother's funeral. I was in a bit of a state when I was waiting for the return journey train and was panicking I would get the wrong train. A brilliantly friendly guard, I think his name was Neal (his wife is an hairdresser) he put me at ease, em... People often mention station, train, staff, platform, ticket, good, platforms, toilets,

The modern station design is used for the exterior of this massive one, making it stand out clear as day when looking out. It was also kept very clean when me and a friend went there, walking past the shops upon entry that are a great feature for improving people's services. We were already going to Leeds on our tickets but wanted to buy ones for reaching Glasshoughton from there; the ticket guards were brilliant in selling us those despite the service being from a different city! It is also easy to find your way around the station due to the map and after going through the ticket barriers smoothly, we had to wait mere minutes for one of the frequent services to Leeds that the platform was more than large enough for.

Much smaller than you think. Platforms can get quite crowded when trains get delayed and beware when the sun is shining at full pelt shelter is intermittent. There are more benches outside than in until you reach the ticket barriers. There's a good selection of cafe and bakery outlets like Gregg's, Subway and M&S snacks to keep you fed while you wait. Outside has an astro turf slope to sit on with some shading from small trees. It would be a nice gesture for the town council to provide high backed benches for the elderly / disabled travellers to sit on in this area. I had 4 hrs to wait for my train and my limbs are not as limber as they once were. Toilet facilities adequate. NB no instructions how to operate the taps. This Autistic guide was baffled till l realised it was a push to start mechanism. Arthritic people may find that hard. Staff very helpful on the platform.

I recently had to go to Westgate from Dunbar for my mother's funeral. I was in a bit of a state when I was waiting for the return journey train and was panicking I would get the wrong train. A brilliantly friendly guard, I think his name was Neal (his wife is an hairdresser) he put me at ease, empathised with my situation and waited with me until my train came a few minutes later. That act of kindness really touched me, what a great member of staff to promote your station.

Very big. Can get busy but not overcrowded. Quite a lot of seating, cafes and shops are provided. Services mostly on time. One train cancelled but no affect on the service the train that was cancelled should of done. Excellent staff. Ticket barriers and lots of choice for services

Great train station, lots of modern facilities and a large reasonably priced car park next door

I got harassed and chased down the street into the station by a group of young men, and was pretty shaken up. I would like to thank Robert who was a staff member on platform 2, for managing to make me feel safe and for helping me get an earlier train to keep away from those horrible people. Thank you.

This is how a train station should be simple, long platforms quick in and out it's obviously modern has toilets close by and a huge modern carpark right next to it. In preparation for the next wave of resident's as they have a population growth.

Overall good station, it's clean, tidy and easy to navigate. Long platforms on either side and a good bridge connecting the two. Staff encountered were very helpful.

Simple but effective station with light and airy atmosphere, public toilets on platform 1 with waiting rooms to escape the weather at the bottom ends of each of the 2 platforms. Staff in ticket office are helpful when booking journeys or collecting tickets from a human rather than a machine, good selection of food/drink options with Gregg's, Subway, Costa, WHSmith and vending machines on platforms to give even the pickiest people enough choice

The staff are lovely Especially a lad called Richard he always goes above and beyond. The station is set out in a way that makes travelling easy and the shops there are perfect for travelling!

5 stars besides the insanely loud public address speaker volume. Tinnitus inducing, Orwellian headache.

Now having to queue up and have my rail card checked by someone instead of just going through the barriers, which was quick and convenient. No sign postage saying this was happening; your staff don't say anything to people trying to get through and are confused why their ticket is no longer working.

Good station. Great facilities (toilets, shops etc), and good connections. Can get quite busy out on the platforms, a recommendation would be to add more seats.

Haven't had a door on the gents toilet for over 3 weeks. Other than that, decent car park. Good facilities. Clean and tidy station.

It's a railway station that's kept clean and tidy. The staff are always very curtious and willing to show you to your seat on the train

It is my usual station, every day I take a train to work now and I must say I never had any problems, except for the toilets on level 2 being closed sometimes. Other than that everything seems to run smoothly

Thank you to the staff at Wakefield Westgate station today ( approx 3pm ). In the ticket hall I enquired as to which train to take back home to York and was told take the next train to Leeds and change. When I arrived on the platform this lady had radios her colleague on the platform. The Cross Country train was running late and take that train instead. Her colleague on the platform relayed this message to me and was do helpful. Thank you to both members of staff for exemplary customer service. I was really touched and it made my day.

The station seems to have been uprgaded/refurbished and all, with new canopies, footbridge and station building. I like it, honestly. You get lifts up to the footbridge and seating along the platforms, which are very long here. Trains are decently frequent but can be prone to delays.

Good to see a refill water station at the train station, helpful staff, clear signs although real grass instead of AstroTurf would be nice outside (although the trees are appreciated). Clean toilets too.
