Absolute horrible experience here from rude, discriminatory staff. Went to the counter to get a beer, had a look at the menu, no-one came when I was at the counter. Served other people. When waiting on server, the man decided that on a quiet Tuesday evening I couldn’t order. Apparently the server who didn’t come was overwhelmed by the demands of the day (despite the pub being half empty). I was polite and just checking out the menu, never displayed any irritation or impatience. Will never set foot in here again. They’re passive aggressive and rude to people with a different accent or who aren’t from the area. Avoid going here at all costs!

Great selections of beer. However, cocktails were pretty mediocre. Food was what you would expect at a pub but mains were portioned so that sides were more than the actual dish ( filling but not satisfying ). Service was good and servers were nice but it took 20 minutes to get one cocktail.

The place was empty at 1pm today. Despite that, the kitchen was putting out pretty tasty pub fare. Had the fish and chips and the Pub Platter (sampler). Had a Pilsner, which I love, and a Sir JA Pale Ale which dad liked too. Sat on the threshold of the patio and was bothered by flies and wasps, but otherwise a lovely afternoon to sit for a bite at the pub. Nothing is cheap anymore, so the bill of $80 was typically higher than I expected but that's the way everywhere.

Sir John A pub is a great place to have a beer, grab some pub grub and people watch on Elgin street. The pub has a fantastic selection of beers from around the world and it also has lots of fine spirits too. The patio is nice and there are spaces for group of 8 people. We arrived after a long day of travel, got a table right away. Food was good and atmosphere was fabulous. Large outdoor patio. Burger was delicious. Naan chicken sandwich was ok. Bruschetta was basically pizza but so so good!

They have a shaded patio, so it's good to be there if you wanna drink outside but super sunny day. Lots of beer selection and foods are decent. My go to is 'pub platter'. I am obsessed with zucchini fries! Casual vibe pub on Elgin. I don't think reservation is necessary unless it's some special day.

Went on a Friday evening: place was over crowded, and they still manage to take a great care of us. Server was very attentive, drinks were good and food too! Place is clean. Highly recommend.

This place knows what hospitality business is all about.. when everyone else was turning ppl away bc of capacity, this place was able to make room for a small group. The drinks were quick, the server was fantastic and the late night food was pretty good. The pub was definitely rockin' so good night was had by all. Big shout out to the gentleman at the host stand.. he made it all happen. Good place for drinks and good atmosphere.

They have a good beer selection ! The place have lots space inside so they can offer a good number of tables/seating to host multiple clients at once. During summer times, it also has some outdoor seating as well. The food was good too! Cheers!

Great little pub. Food was really good and they have their own beer which was one of the best pale ale's I have ever had. They have a pretty wide selection of other beers as well plus a good whiskey menu.

Was in the area and wanted to check this place out. Tried their home brew pale ale which was really light and refreshing for 5.2%. Just ordered a basket of zucchini sticks, as it was a bit early for dinner. It was there service I was most impressed with. My server was friendly and attentive. This was a good first experience.

We were here for dinner, we ordered nachos and veg pizza, nachos were amazing and veg pizza was avg, they have large outdoor patio and its busy on weekends.

The pub has a decent selection of beers and ciders, as well as a really good scotch and whiskey selections. What else can you ask for from an English style pub. The location is good and centrally located in the parliament area. All in all a good experience.

The pizza was ok but way too much cheese. I ordered pulled pork not cheese pull. So I expect more meat taste not only cheese... The poutine tasted awful. Fries were so bad and the sauce is bad too. It tastes more like plastic than actual fries. The cocktail is mediocre. I can't believe we paid $12 for that garbage. Should be 3 stars for the food but I gave one extra because the food was made surprisingly quick and it is open late.

Favourite pub within walking distance!!! Great selection of pub food even though I am a picky eater, I found something I liked on the menu. Could do for a better cocktail menu since I hate beer and am always dragged by my friends to go to pubs. Great atmosphere and Elgin street is always alive but not overwhelming like the Byward Market

Good beer selection from local breweries. I wish they would have scanned my QR code to verify my vax proof is legit, I want to be confident people inside aren't using fake proofs so we can all dine in confidence.

Nice little pub. We stopped in for food and drinks. The food was good although the menu said basmati rice came with the curry but it was just regular white rice. Minor issue. The beer selection is fantastic. A few they were out of that I wanted to try but that's somewhat expected in these times. A little odd there are no prices on the beer menu. Overall, great pub and would go back.

I stayed in Ottawa August 14th at The Business Inn across from Sir John A Pub. I did not eat there but got a birds eye view from my balcony of their staff and how they run their restaurant. I was very Impressed. I have worked in many restaurants and I could see that they have awesome staff. They all were quick and attentive and able to multitask and work as a team. The Patio was full which also says alot about their Restaurant. I checked out the menu and like the choices and find the prices reasonable and will definitely come for a meal next time in Ottawa and will recommend it to my friends. Keep up the great job!!

I've always been a big fan of grabbing a quick drink here on your way around downtown. It's very close to where I live and they have a massive selection of drafts. Service is always phenomenal, they understand their patrons and know how to serve them properly. I would give them 5 stars on being a bar, however my personal suggestion would be to stick to drinks. After maybe 5 or 6 previous visits we decided to grab food, and while it's at a comparable price to other local pubs, the quality is poor. We had the Cajun Wrap and the Chicken Naan Sandwich, and were pretty disappointed in the quality. It's standard pub fare, but unfortunately they just don't' do it well (or at least didn't that evening). I still suggest you check it out and grab a beer, you won't be disappointed in just showing up for drink.

Great pub with decent food and excellent service. The people that run it clearly care about their customers. They always make sure you have a great experience when you’re there and if they do miss the mark they always make it right. I’ve always had a good time here. Definitely place to go if you’re looking for a good pub experience.

My go-to watering hole for years now. I love their staff, super friendly owner, amazing selection of drinks on tap. Food is pretty average pub food but the atmosphere makes up for it. Clean venue, patio and indoors with nice layout and attracts wide range of customers. I've been there with some girlfriends and seen business types, elderly groups, jock types, and loners all enjoying themselves

Sir John A Pub is located on the busy and beautiful Elgin Street. The pub was packed with a happening loud crowd. Ambience was missing music but the loud chatter I doubt any music could be heard! Food was good, I enjoyed my spinach and artichoke dip, the Mac & Cheese was good but not the best, Grilled veggies wrap was decent and the fries were crisp and golden. Drinks- classic martini wasn't on the list so I asked my server if I could still get it and she said yes (brownie points for her) Cocktails, Blue lagoon and Berry frizz was decent in taste too. Overall I liked it and would recommend this spot for a chill night out.

Had such a strange and hostile experience here when a younger male host/server, possibly the owner’s son, refused entry to 3 friends and I for no reason on a Saturday night when there were multiple unoccupied tables on the patio. Singled out one guy with us and said his “eyes didn’t look right” and assumed he was too intoxicated to enter when he was literally sober and told him so! After some back and forth he walked away waving us off. Won’t be returning

Good food, lots of draft choices

Tried bourbon lime and tender chicken . Food was served hot and it's good . You can definitely try bourbon lime . I think it's somewhere around 9pm we entered this Saturday , since it was crowded inside, we both decided to take patio . Giving 1 star rating because we Didn't like the girl attitude in the front table ,the one who received us. Once we took the table ,she came outside after few min to keep the starter I guess and gave a wired look at me for no reason . She kind of dragged the chair before us and made noise with those table outside the patio with full anger attitude on her face. Poor chairs .i was wondering what's the problem with her . It hurted me so badly . me and my husband came there to spend some quality time ,but that particular waitress or front desk girl spoiled our mood,we didn't like her rude attitude. As if she is serving us for free. And I have to mention there was one other waitress ,the one with two cute pony tails ,she was so charming she took our orders and served us drink with big smile till the check.it was kind of mixed emotions . If you are reading this, this to you miss, do not show your anger and rude attitude to any of your customers. Many of us are 9 to 5 working people,working hard throughout the week and maintaing families and balacing personal emotions and also our families back in our country ,we are drained throughout our weekdays,we have only Saturday night left for us to be in peace ,please respect it and try not to spoil our moods and yours too . May what try to Keep smiling and make your customers happy ☺ If the owner is reading,sir be wise when you pick your waitresses to retain your customers . Thank you.

I’ve been here a few times and have enjoyed usually good service and great beers from their vast menu selection, but we unfortunately had an unsavoury experience with the front of house staff before being seated this weekend. Everyone has bad days, but unprompted rudeness from the host really left my group upset. Reading through other reviews, it sounds like we weren’t the first group. This really is a shame because this place really is a good spot! Hoping for a different experience on another visit.

A local favourite. Located right in the heart of Elgin street, it's a popular spot. The food is great and it has a nice patio. The inside is nice too if you want to catch a game. During peak busy hours, service can be a little slow, but usually it's nice and quick.

It wast first time going, my boyfriend and I had the beef dip. It was very yummy. We are definitely going to go back again and try other menu items. It was a bit loud but that's to be expected inna pub. I just don't do well in loud environments.

Good vibe here. Best part was that the kitchen was open late compared to other spots in the neighborhood. We had a mix of apps and food. Everyone was satisfied overall. Large selection of beer and drinks.

Went where without a reservation on a Friday night. Couple of spots left. Good pub vibe. Choice of beer and food was great. Steak was very good even more so if you compare to other pubs. We had two waitresses coming at our table for service. Very proactive. Definitely going there again!

Looking for a chill place with typical pub food. This is the place to be! Also the only place I know that serves Delirium beer!

Great Pub, and a good location. The food is mediocre at best. We ordered the Cesar Salad but did not have ANY dressing. Another thing was no coasters, so the bottom of the beer glass got super wet and water drips on you when drinking.

I walked in this place soon after they opened, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to get so it took me some time trying to figure out what I want, then what seemed to be the owner or manager approached me and in a very pushy way he told me what drink did I want, I told him I just need some time to figure out what I want and he kept being pushy with me telling me the bartender has to go do some opening work with him so I told him she can go with you and take as long as she wants when she’s back I will have decided what I want by then, he then told me we’re closed please get out, with people in the bar still eating, I was surprised because me needing more time to decide should be 100% acceptable, I then went to the bar across the street, they were very nice and I told the person about what happened and he was shocked that someone in the hospitality industry would do something like this. This took place about 7 months ago, it just shows you how bad the service was, and how annoyed I was at getting kicked out for something like needing more time to decide what drink I want and by a manager/owner

Superb beer menu. Food menu is typical pub eats - wraps are delicious. Great atmosphere and staff is stellar. Noise level mixed in with music sometimes gets a little too high so holding a conversation can get a little tricky.

Went for a late night walk and stopped by at the pub for a few pints of local brew. Jasmine took care of me and did an exceptional job with customer service. It was the best experience I ever had on Elgin, let alone at Sir John A Pub. Will definitely be back more often. 😀 Tell her Bu sent you.

Amazing spinach dip!

good selection of beers, very good service with good suggestion from our waitress based on our preferences BUT the food was really below average. ordered a burger, the meat was so overcooked, had little to no taste, same for the cheese and bacon. I wanted to write two reviews as I really liked our waitress and the beers I had but the food really is quite bad

Very accommodating staff.

Have only been here once but plan to return. They have a great expanded patio with covid. Service was excellent. They were attentive, came back to check in, brought out food and drinks in a timely manner. The food was good as well. Everyone was happy with their meal. The fish and chips were amazing but I didn't feel well overnight and in the morning. I'd probably try the fish again to see if it was a fluke but maybe get a poutine instead of plain fries. Draft beer selection is excellent. One beer we ordered was warm so they took it back and we ordered something else. Gin and tonics were good but tonic water must have been flat but we didn't flag that to the waitress.

The staff were great, the food was great, the beer list was great, the ambience and vibe were great. This is the perfect Scottish Canadian Pub and the only place we went to more than once on our weekend trip to Ottawa.
