Updated: While some things have changed, with the new ownership, the crowd, the service, and the comfort food remains! Mmmm! I like the Bacon Cheeseburger Platter! Nestled in the heart of Hintonburg, the Carleton Tavern is an institution and favourite spot for many. Sunday morning breakfast is simple and straightforward (poached eggs, homefries and sausage), a reflection of its strong roots and history. Service is friendly, and at times a bit sparse, but the quiet and solitude were welcomed on an early Sunday morning. When you are there for lunch - it’s lively and always accommodating! You can start your day with breakfast and then cross the street to the Parkdale Market. It’s a win-win.

Not what it used to be. The charm left with the specials when new owners took over. No Monday night pizza. No wing specials. No Appetizers Specials. Just a regular menu and no real reason to go anymore. Used to be our groups go to for almost everything. Especially wings.

A great “neighborhood” spot to enjoy some great home style cooking at affordable prices… They still serve “quarts” of beer and have some great beer on taps available too! A varied menu ensures there’s something for everyone. Occasional live music on weekends sounds amazing! Come and enjoy a part of Hintonberg history at this staple of the neighborhood since 1936! I’m the third generation of Carleton Place patrons… and it’s always pleasant, offering excellent food with efficient served with service a smile. Drop in for a beer or excellent home style food, inside or on their large patio along Parkdale Street!

This place is awesome. I've heard about this place for about 4 years and never got around to visiting. Finally got there and was sorry it took so long. Great atmosphere, amazing prices, good food and live music is returning soon, apparently. Had a loaded hot dog and a giant beer (quarts) for $12.40 taxes in.

The last of Ottawa's old tavern atmosphere locals left in the city and that's how they want it. Great band that night, hosted a party upstairs. good time but a little short on white wine that night and the pizza dough maker was on the fritz sadly. Hope it's going now.

Great place. Cheap beer, cheap food. Really fast and friendly service. We showed up just after last call for food and they opened the kitchen to make us some jumbo dogs. Everything is better than you expect for the price you're paying, there's no other way to put it. Lots of TVs and they're playing what you want. Cheap billiards too.

Ok restaurant. 49 cents wings on promotional days with a beverage. You get what you pay for.

Been going there for a year with my father and brother every Tuesday. Unfortunately had “the boss” as our waitress today who was extremely rude and confrontational, after we asked to be moved from the table beside the garbage can, and again when my 85 year old father accidentally tipped over a chair. We promptly left and went up the street to one of many great eateries nearby. We will not be going back. Dear new owners - having friendly and respectful staff would be an asset to your business. Shame…

One of the oldest active taverns in Ottawa is the Carleton Tavern @ 223 Armstrong st and Parkdale Ave. There is great charm in the 1935 establishment building and it would tell many stories if it could talk. The old style wooden chairs and walls just feel right when throwing back a few pints of beer while have a good howl with friends. Pre covid they had free live local music on Friday and Saturday nights and lots if people dance to classic rock tunes. The prices are excellant for the beer and pub grub. The Carleton also hosts special events like the Superbowl, Halloween and the odd office party. The owner has good spirit and heart. He provides meals for people hard on their luck during less busy customer times. I highly recommend this tavern to those just looking for a good time, have a few beers and a laugh with old friends.

This place is exactly what you'd expect and want. Good beer, good service, lots of local regulars, and cheap food. You can get a hot doggie platter for $12 which is a screaming deal alongside a pitcher for you and your friends. Great spot to stop after a hot day at the community garden or market.

I ate dinner at home, then met a bunch of cool buds at the Carleton. We were interested in the wings and appetizer deals. I have struggled with binge eating for many years, this night was no different. I ate 36 chicken wings, a slice of pizza, zucchini sticks, a beer steamed jumbo hot dog. I enjoyed it all more than I should have. The servers were great. My belly was full, my tats were floppy. I had semi chub during the jumbo dog. I had trouble sleeping that night due to consuming 1000% of my daily sodium intake. There was also hot gravy knocking at my back door. Blast it!

Love the old-school pub vibe and the food is that same mentality. You can feel the history and I hope it never changes. The prices are so reasonable and this is a place I'd hold reunions and parties.

One of the oldest taverns in Ottawa and a local gem in the neighborhood. Be sure to come out on Friday nights for free entertainment. A great place to dance and gather with friends for a cold beer.

The band tonight, Cara Queue, brought the heat, keeping the dancefloor moving with a broad selection of hits and deep cuts from the classic rock catalogue. Shout-out to our server Kim for endearingly helping navigate our rowdy table into some semblance of good patronage. Thanks for a great night out!

I am attaching a photo of the Nachos that were delivered to my table. There was no veg on it and I brought that to the attention of the waitress. Just nachos, cheeses, and the chicken was not cold but cool. She checked with the cook. There was a problem with the computer. They offered to put some veg on it but I decided to eat it the way it was. I did not finish it. They gave me a discount. With the discount it was $16. tax in. I left a $3 tip because the waitress was good about it. It wasn't her fault. I had already left $2. tip on my drink. I ate there before under the former owner and I never had a problem.

Your old school neighborhood pub that just oozes character. Quarts of beer and traditional pub fare. Always a big supporter of live music. Definitely worth a gander.

We are often coming by. Cheap prices, great old-fashioned decor with memorabilia, great staff. Too bad it just got sold, we'll have to see how it goes!

Went there on St Pattys day, the place was packed and the staff were nice. The music that night kinda was all over the place. Most of the night the band was lost. Which kinda turned me off of the spot. The way inside was confusing. Thus, if you were new there good luck picking the right doors to get in.

If you are in the mood for a bar that will remind you of your university bar then The Carleton is for you. Don't want to worry about the calculation of tax? Again The Carleton is for you as tax is included in the prices. A wonderful place to drink and chat. Service is excellent and fast.

Really old place- an old institution. Places like these, are a dime à dozen. And so here in Ottawa we have some. We are a Nostalgic kind of people here and like to keep places for as long as possible. But who knows when and how long these old places will stay?

  • 5/5 Andrew W. 2 years ago on Google
Essentially, this is the finest example of a tavern bar in all of Ottawa that has been left in its original form. The food and drink are what you would expect from your average drinking tavern. Bar fare ranges from a very well made basket of fries all the way up to hamburger or hot-dog platters. They do offer lunch specials. Of course, there are the quarts. For those that are not aware, these are bottles of beer as tall as an average person's forarm. All in all, the place is everything you would expect from an originally configured tavern.

Local could/should be considered an historic site. Tasty Tavern meals. My favorites are the meat lovers pizza and club sandwich. Fish and chips looks good and sizable. Surprising to also find Jamaican goat patties on menu. One of the few places to grab a meal and some drinks, where prices have not sky rocketed.

  • 3/5 Marjan H. 1 year ago on Google
Live music was good. I liked fish and chips. Most of the staff were friendly. Looked like they are more comfortable with older neighborhood customers rather than younger strangers. No menu for drinks!

The Carleton serves up exactly what it promises. Reasonable food, great specials, well priced menu and a cool place to hang out. It has become one of my favourite places to hang out. Don't expect the Ritz, expect the Carleton and you will not be disappointed.

So the place was very yummy. How ever I went there on a Monday, they had 40% off pizza. So naturally I ordered a large. When I asked for a to go box, they then informed me it's eat in only. I wish they would have told me that before I would have only ordered what I could eat then. Fortunately my friend who ordered wings was still hungry and ate most of what was left of my pizza. I will go back but this time I am aware.

The menu feels incomplete compared to what this lovely little hole in the wall actually offers. It has a congenial atmosphere and well-executed wings.

Solid pub, steeped in local history. It a bit rough around the edges, but has all the markings of a proper English pub. Good food, good drink and great banter with both staff and patrons.

A big shout out to the Carleton for having us for Danny's 60th bday party. Sam, Simon, Rob can't say enough about how great we were welcomed and treated. Billy and kitchen, thank you so much for the great pizzas, wings, veggies >> the best! Jade, such excellent friendly service! Thank you also to Tina (I think, my apologies if this is incorrect) for the set-up, etc. We were welcomed and felt like "the regulars" again. Cheers and thank you, Diana.

Historic tavern in a building from 1896! Classic food dishes, good beers, and tvs all around. What makes this place a local gathering spot are the good service people and the tradition.

Looking for that old school watering hole here it is, great food drinks and great staff. Unfortunately new owners will be taking over in February. Let's hope the new owners keep the same vibe 😊
