Over the last few year I was traveling to Ottawa on business regularly. I have dined here many times as a solo business traveling and it very quickly became my home away from home. While I am far from a regular (maybe visiting 3-4 times a year) some of the staff began to recognize me and that is an amazing feeling for a traveler. Food has always been creative and delicious. Cool vibe, great service, amazing food - what the hell more could you ask for? My only complaint is that business trends don't have me in Ottawa as much right now - may need to make a trip just for dinner.

Great fun atmosphere. Love the speakeasy room downstairs. Good cocktails and tasty appetizers. I truly enjoy the boiled peanuts and the Frito Pie as it brings a bit of fun and corkiness to the meal. • I have enjoyed many meals in this fine institution and tonight was the first time that the mains were a disappointment. • All of our mains were served “cold”, the beef brisket was extreme greasy and the fried chicken was overly vinegary. I sincerely believe and hope this was an “off night” for them as this is a first for me. • The service staff was extremely understanding and took our feedback as constructive criticism. They dealt with this situation brilliantly. Kudos to the front of the house. We will certainly be returning.

Wonderful!! The food was all fantastic - definitely get yourself a side order of that cornbread it is delicious. Everything was so yummy, I'm not usually a real person but I tried theirs and it was so good I'd do it again. The coating on the deep fried chicken was the nicest I've ever had. The staff were delightful, the ambiance is fun and exciting. All around delightful experience.

Tried Union Local for a dinner out and it was nice that the street was blocked off so that there was more space available. The food tasted good in terms of flavoring. Fried tomatoes were unique but a similar style to onion rings. Only disappointment was the fried chicken burger which had a piece of chicken that was so thin and small that you can barely see it in the picture…

I really wanted to enjoy the food here but the fried chicken and wings were in desperate need of salt. The wings was also really oily. And the cornbread was beyond bland. Once more, I REALLY wanted to like it because I am really familiar with southern cuisine. Unfortunately, nothing really worked beyond the fries and our drinks. I do like the location though and the waitstaff were really nice.

This little restaurant hidden away in downtown Ottawa. Pulls it's weight in service, food and style. It offers 3 different vibes depending on what floor you are on and delivers on any occasion. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff, outstanding food and the detail isn't held back on the drinks.

Wow. Outstanding. Love the southern style food and the amazing atmosphere. Highly highly recommend the pork belly, hush puppies, and the duck wings. All were excellent and their cocktails look so good! Will be back soon!!

The first time I went there I was quite disappointed with the dish I ordered - fried chicken - as it was sad and small for what I paid. However, I appreciate how amazing the service is. The owner invited me back to try other dishes and it was amazing! I also love the fact that they are so welcoming to dogs on the patio, overall, it's a great local place that deserves to be supported!

Was in town visiting a friend. The drinks were perfect and nothing beats good food/company! I forget our waiters name, but he was super friendly and attentive

Ordered the fried chicken, it was phenomenal. There was a bit of a mix up with it about how I wanted it prepared, however it got taken care of very promptly by the owner himself (at least I'm pretty sure he was the owner). Overall the food and service quality were nothing short of extraordinary. Come to eat and drink here, if you want to spend your time and money the right way!

Absolutely incredible food along with great service and an amazing ambience! The smoked duck confit, Lamb dish, and the northern Char were insane! Probably one of the best meals I’ve ever had! Also went back for brunch and was equally blown away! The speakeasy downstairs called “The Staff Room” has a great vibe too! You can order food downstairs as well, so not a bad place if the main dining hall is packed! Definitely need reservations here so make sure to do that the day before as it fills quickly. Bottom line is make sure to eat here when you’re in Ottawa!

Interesting menu with great items. The only thing is there are only a few options so it's best to check to make sure they offer something to your taste before you go. Top notch drinks.

Came here to meet up with a friend who I hadn't seen in a long time, it was their recommendation. Probably should have made a reservation but managed to squeeze us in and I could see why as it got quite busy quickly after that. My friend had a couple of appetizers which she very much enjoyed and I had the brisket which was also very good. Cocktails were great and a couple of them were a nice twist on some well know ones. Good atmosphere, laid back, music not too loud so you could enjoy a good conversation. Apparently the street putside is closed off sometimes during the summer and they had a large patio which according to the waiter is a lot of fun. Even a speakeasy downstairs, which wasn't happening when I was there but sounded like it could be fun

I love the comfy feeling as if you're in your own home. Although the food is pricey, the atmosphere is really nice. There is a secret bar downstairs by the washroom before you turn, that's hidden behind a bookshelf. Don't push the bookshelf away, just pull! It's like a door.

The drinks were delicious and the food was good. Even better than the food/drinks was the ambience and service. Love it!

Had an absolutely incredible experience for brunch. Tried the pulled pork with poached eggs as well as the fried chicken and waffles, both were out of this world. (Loved the spicy maple syrup!) The drinks were so delicious too! The bourbon lemonade was amazing but the Union Root Beer stole the show. Had to ask for the recipe in which our server provided happily. Would recommend Union Local 613 to anybody looking for a brunch stop in Ottawa!

Ordered the shrimp and grits, chicken and waffles and the breakfast and it was delicious. We were so happy as the food hit the spot. For drinks we had Not a Cesar and So, Apparently - both were so creative and amazing flavours coming together. Must try!

Overall good experience with friendly staff and good tasting food. Portions are a bit smaller than expected (for the prices) as many of the dishes we ordered left us wanting for a bit more - ended up ordering the cornbread which was also somewhat of a small serving too. Taste, however, was great on all dishes and marinated steak was cooked to perfection.

  • 3/5 Yunhan L. 2 years ago on Google
They have a small menu for brunch and a lot of chicken items. I got the Shrimp & Grits but the dish wasn’t what I expected. I thought the potatoes would be more of a mash than small chunks. The taste was average but they could do better than give me 3 shrimps for a main.

  • 5/5 Sabrina S. 2 years ago on Google
Excellent food and drink menu. Verrrry spicy Nashville chicken, excellent fried green tomatoes, the cornbread was a bit too rich with the butter (and too much butter), but otherwise delicious. The beer menu options were excellent. Superb service, too

Great ambiance and excellent food. Definitely worth the visit to get some of the cocktail options but the red wine sangria was delicious. Tried the specials for the day: Appetizer - scallops and pork belly with collared greens Main - sous vide rack of lamb with potato Had the pannacotta with raspberries for dessert off the main menu. Try to get seats in the main dining area. Felt cramped in the hallway seats next to the bar.

Menu could be more descriptive (so ask questions) - ordered the ribs, got ribs, no fries or anything, ordered the fried green tomatoes, didn't list a coating on them. The food was fantastic, server was great, speak easy atmosphere was cool.

Food was delicious and would recommend, but I have to note that our server was really rude which was upsetting. would not leave ratings like this, but when all we did was get up to ask for the bill as we weren't sure whether to pay at the table or at the front, he got snappy with us.

  • 5/5 Thomas W. 2 years ago on Google
Place was busy and as soon as we got there I could tell why. Drinks were clever and tasty. The Nashville chicken sandwich was amazing. Fries were surprisingly well done for a bar/speak easy. And to top it off our service was super friendly and helpful.

SERVICE=5 🌟!! FOOD=1.5 🌟 COCKTAILS=5 🌟 The service and atmosphere was awesome. The waitress was really nice, fast, and overall great! Super impressed with the service!!! The atmosphere was very chill and had a cool vibe. Cocktails were very good! The sweetest old fashion I've ever had, but it actually worked very well. The other cocktails were well made. Nice that they make their syrups in house. The food however was inedible. We got several dishes that the table shared and no one was really able to eat it due to the excessive salt. I don't think I've ever tried food so salty. EVER. Even after some cocktails the food was still so salty we couldn't eat much. I'm not sure if the chefs/cooks have ever tried their own food, because if so, it wouldn't have been sent out. It was a waste of food, we left full plates and no one wanted to take it home it was so bad. I'm not sure if maybe our experience was just a one time thing, or if their food is always like that. Will return for cocktails and the atmosphere, but definitely won't be eating there ever again.

Very nice service and atmosphere. We really enjoyed the southern cuisine. The fried green tomatoes are awesome! Grits Excellent! And I would recommend the Nashville fried chicken! With a side and appies is plenty! We will be back!

Nice staff, but you're payiny for the trendy location. Jammed everyone that sat inside to the very back near the extremely smokey kitchen. Fried chicken was very different and not at all to all three of our tastes. Fries dried out, cornbread is smal, thin and dried out too. Fried green tomatoes were good, but had grated orange cheddar with it which was odd.

Had such a great experience, amazing food and service! The drinks were tasty and the water was chilled to perfection. Recommend the homemade ginger beer, mulled sangria, halls and oats, werthless nostalgia and the lemonade. The boiled peanuts were hit & miss with our crowd. Greatly enjoyed; shrimp & grits, deviled eggs, curry fries, seitan sandwich and beef brisket. Service smashed it! It was a little slow but considering there was only one server. He made us and the night feel special.

This is definitely one of my favourite spots in Ottawa! My partner and I enjoy coming here for date nights and always visit when our friends are coming from out of town! The Hominy Grits and Curry Fries are a MUST! Their cocktails never disappoint and it’s always a surprise with their rotating food menu! Overall the vibes are excellent and the experience is always pleasant as we are always served by friendly staff!

Service was top shelf, our server was very engaging and really added to the evening for my brother and I. We had blackened basa and fried chicken BUT and a really BIG but. The fried green tomatoes were an absolute standout. I will for sure be returning for those. Quite possibly one of the best things I’ve eaten in a long time.

A “hidden in plain sight” gem located in the heart of Centretown! Super friendly staff, a great beer menu, and a really nice patio located right on Somerset. It is such a friendly and safe spot for folks, I would definitely recommend checking it out!

I ordered the fried chicken at this restaurant, and it was absolutely phenomenal. Although there was a slight mix-up with how I wanted it prepared, the owner (or at least someone who seemed like the owner) promptly took care of it. The overall quality of the food and service was extraordinary. If you're looking for a place to enjoy delicious food and drinks, where your time and money are well spent, this is the place to be!

Had a wonderful experience the other day. Dined in the "Speak-Easy" style basement and enjoyed 3 separate cocktails- all expertly mixed. For the main course I enjoyed the Fried Chicken and it was heavenly. We were overcharged accidentally but the staff saw the mistake and rectified it promptly for us. I will definitely be going back.

  • 2/5 Katrina K. 3 years ago on Google
Very disappointed with my experience. Called the restaurant to see if they had dining - was curtly told, yeah, we have been for a while. Arrived to find that there were only bar tables (im short with an ankle injury, so I asked to be seated at the bench instead of on a rickety high bar chair). They seemed very put off since it was a 4 person table (they could have easily pulled them apart since they later did it with 2 other tables). Sat down and the waiter asked for our drink order. We said no alcohol only water - we don't drink... sure enough, he had no interest in us after. We searched for a menu everywhere on the multiple papers only to find a half a dozen individual items (no more meals). I was very disappointed since this was not updated online or alluded to when we called. Ordered the hot fried chicken - it appeared to have been previously fried and then refried for us as it was extremely dark and extremely dry. 2 tiny pieces of chicken with a stale slice of bread 14$. My partner got the pastrami sandwich (might have been 16$) which was just a bun with 2 slices of meat 1 slice of cheese and a tasty mustard (the mustard was the best part of the entire meal) and maybe a pickle. The waiter didn't show up for another 20 minutes but walked by our empty plates and water 4 or 5 times. When he came back we got the bill and left - not to a friendly face or goodbye. I dont understand how when, with only 4 tables full and 2 servers on shift, we can hace such long, drawn out, crummy service or disappointing food. We have come once before in the fall and I had the best shrimp and grits I've had outside of Nashville - and was expecting a similar culinary experience. This just left me disappointed that I didn't go to one of the other restaurants on the block. Too bad. Perhaps I'd have been more forgiving if it was busy... It was one of the first places I was excited to try post covid - and now I dont even want to go back.

  • 5/5 keenan m. 3 years ago on Google
Went here recently despite having concerns about patios in general due to covid. I was pleasantly surprised by all the steps that union took to make sure the visit was safe and enjoyable. Plenty of space between tables, two heaters for our one group, good quality hand sanitizer, extra masks for forgetful people and to top it all off, our server, Joel was great! Highly recommended.

First time here tonight and was not disappointed. Eric was our server and he was so personable, friendly and knowledgeable. Cocktails were on point all night and the vibe was amazing. Will 100% be returning here and 10/10 recommend it here! You killed it Eric. See ya soon!

Awesome location with an excellent and large patio for outdoor dining! I ordered the nuts (soaked in salt water for 24 hours) and did not enjoy them, but my sister really did. The vegan seitan sandwich was SO TASTY!!! It tasted just like a chicken sandwich and I couldn’t have eaten it faster. Wish I had gotten the French fries instead of the nuts—next time. Staff were kind and made sure safety protocols were being adhered to.

My first time here and it was great! Shannon was an awesome server and Éric was super welcoming. Peanuts, fried chicken, kale salad, and beers were delicious! I recommend the mango sour beer. Not what I expected and would definitely order again. See you soon!

I love this place in general, but tonight really sealed the deal for me! We ordered on a delivery site right before they opened, and received a couple of errors along with a really rude delivery guy. The restaurant took our call immediately and made us a brand new order along with a few extra boiled peanuts. Thank you so much for the outstanding service and food. 10/10.

Location: Downtown. We scored a parking spot just around the corner, but I think that might be a rare occurence! The place: We stopped by here for lunch on a Sunday (yesterday) and didn't have to wait for a table. I think their interior dining area is closed so I didn't see inside - we stat out on the patio, which is relatively small. Tables facing the street have a trellis so you don't see people walking by, which I quite liked. The goods: I tried the fried chicken and asked if I could swap the waffle for fries and it wasn't a problem. The chicken was great - the maple glaze was so good - it had the perfect combination of sweetness and spiciness (which I didn't expect!). The home fries were also great though I would have liked a bit more seasoning. I tried their ginger beer but felt that the ginger was lacking. You couldn't really Tate the ginger. My friend ordered the burger and was happy with it. Service: OK Price point: With taxes and tip, both orders came out to $54 in total.

Had an excellent Sunday Brunch at Union Local 613. Staff were fast and very friendly, great with recommandations on the menu, both drinks and meals. Tables are spaced apart, sanitisation stations both outside and inside. Physical distancing protocols are in place. QR code scanable menu. Great atmosphere, better food. Can't go wrong with this pick. We were able to make a reservation ahead of time whoch also doubled as our contact tracing and seamless sitting.

  • 5/5 Keith B. 3 years ago on Google
Just ordered takeout from here. When it arrived we phoned Union 613 to query the order because one of our vegan sandwiches appeared to contain a fried chicken breast. (It turns out they had no boneless chicken in the restaurant therefore it could only have been the seitan sandwich that we ordered). I eat a fair amount of fake meat and these days a lot of it tastes "kind of" like chicken, but this was the first time I've ever been convinced that it was. My apologies to the staff for suggesting that they got our order wrong. And my congratulations also because that was one hell of a sandwich.

I don't write reviews really, but seeing as my last two interactions with Union 613 were pretty horrible I decided I would in this case. The service during my last visit was abysmal. I hadn't made a reservation, but was totally fine sitting at a hightop table to wait for a spot to open up. I got served once and then was completely ignored until I decided to get up and ask for the bill because I was tired of waiting to order another drink. Also got in touch with them to see about booking some time in the speakeasy for a 40th birthday party and after a couple of emails they just completely stopped responding. Super disappointing because this place has great food and it's a cute spot, but not worth going to after all the frustration.

Really wanted to like this place so tried again. Appreciate the house-made ginger beer but it was flat and could use a little kick. The fried chicken was mushy and the spice mix was just ok. Kale salad was very fresh. Just not worth premium pricing.

Got takeout tonight. Best takeout we have had since the Pandemic started. Restored my faith in good meals to go. I loved the peanuts and Nashville hot wings (wings were very flavourful and had quite the kick). Bahn Mi interpretation was delicious too. All was hot, reasonably priced and delicious. Way to go Union!

We went on a late Saturday night for some drinks. Even after 1am there was a couple options for finger food, which we enjoyed very much. You have to try the fried tomatoes! Our server (Shannon I think) was awesome and knowledgeable, also very patient as some of us were pretty rowdy. Thank you so much Shannon :)

My girlfriend and I were visiting Ottawa from Toronto for a family member's wedding and decided on a whim to try out Union Local 613. Boy are we glad we did. The food was amazing - both my starter (biscuits and gravy - it's much better than it sounds, trust me) and main (pork belly with warm potato salad, buttermilk cream, swiss chard, chutney and capers) were both amazing, the biscuits were clearly sped from the oven to your plate and the gravy was tasty, while the pork belly was done absolutely perfectly. The staff - Haley, Nicole and Jameel were amazing, both very attentive and experts at their jobs, and their house-made cola is excellent too. This place is absolutely worth the visit, and we will be going again.
