To be completely fair I will rate atmosphere, service and food separately.. Atmosphere was 5/5, very interesting layout with beautiful decoration, high ceilings, stone walls, great lighting - all in all great. Service 4/5, it was good, no complaints. Food 1/5, unfortunately the food was extremely oily, to the point where it was not editable. A lot of potential as the quality is great and dishes are unique. I would recommend it for the experience, it is located within the lovely Byward Market which makes for a great evening out.

Sadly, was terribly disappointed. We came from a 7 hour drive for a trip to Quebec and stopped in to check out this place. From the menu and website I was fairly excited to try the food. Beautiful place, such a great ambiance. Cocktails pretty good as well. Food- we had bajan fish tacos. Very bland, fish didn’t really taste like anything. Spicy beef tacos - extremely dry beef, literally like eating jerky, again no flavour, not much meat at all, sent these back and they came out with less meat and still dry and inedible. Shrimp dumplings - looked great, was underdone and sent back, came out again underdone. The dough was chewy and sticky, either underdone as In not steamed enough, or dough was overworked, either way it wasn’t pleasant. We mentioned this to the server, and was polite about it, we get mistakes happen, but we were pretty disappointed. He disappeared pretty quickly and we had another server come and take care of us. Overall, really really wanted to like this place as I made a reservation about 2-3 weeks out planning this trip. Unfortunate, and I’m sure it’s not always like that, but will not be returning

I went this restaurant's patio for dinner last night. The food was not outstanding at all. Green papaya salad has a weird taste like the waste water after brushed a pot. For main dishes, shrimp with green curry has too much green vegetables which made the flavour not balance. Braised beef was too fatty. The most important thing is the majority of people are suffering from very serious food poisoning on the next day, including severe diarrhea, vomiting, stomachache, dehydration. I don't usually do comments on Google map, but I really want to alert people who want go to this restaurant be careful. You can definitely go somewhere else with reasonable price, better food quality without food poisoning.

Food was alright. Papaya salad had a nice texture but was a bit too sour. Beef curry was too sweet, could hardly taste the spices. Beef itself wasn’t seasoned. When eating just the curry and the peanuts, it kind of tastes like peanut butter.. Also tried black cod which was just ok. Broth was too salty and flavour was pretty one-dimensional. The restaurant setting is very nice though, they just need to serve better food.

Wanted to like this place as the fusion menu was very interesting, however our experience was disappointing. The salmon sashimi was alright (very expensive though), but all our other dishes disappointed. We had the soft shell crab which included pork belly, and the pork belly was somehow dry and chewy? It was hard to eat and lacked flavour. For our mains we got the beef curry and shrimp curry. They were nothing special. My shrimp curry came with about 4 pieces of shrimp, and a whole pot of uncooked hard vegetables. It was not a pleasant textural experience, rice cost extra which was surprising to me, given the curry was already over $40 by itself. Cocktails were hit or miss. Little Tokyo lacked any sort of flavour, Empress was nice though. The service was odd.. very inconsistent and the staff seemed confused. They brought the wrong item to our table a few times, other tables were told that the kitchen had already hit its limit at 5pm on a weekday. Not a good look. Overall for the price, this was atrocious. Go to Riviera or J:Unique instead if you want good food in this price tier.

A good location for casual fine dining. The menu items felt like they were supposed to be shared amongst the table, especially with the "Sides" menu (which we didn't partake in). The appetizers that we had were amazing and the drinks we had paired well with the items we ordered. The black cod entrée was disappointing but the coconut curry was good. The wait staff needs significant improvements at this price point (more staff would likely resolve this). The donuts were okay but could use a few tweaks. Order: Eggplant Bao Bun ($15.00 for 2 pieces) x1 - Soft and squishy bao bun - Tasty filling with a slight spice/heat to it - More filling in the bao bun would be nice Soft Shell Crab ($21.00 each) x1 - Amazingly succulent pork belly - Delicious and tender soft shell crab - The cashew puree mixed well with the fatty porky belly and refreshing mango/apple salad Coconut Fritter ($26.00 each) x1 - Above average Thai curry base - This felt like it needed a side of rice - At this price point, I would have expected the rice to come with the dish - The fritters could have used more salt Black Cod ($39.00 each) x1 - Disappointing entrée, especially at this price point - Extremely mild and under seasoned dashi - The cod was cooked perfectly and fell apart - The glaze on the cod did not come through, leaving the white fish to be quite bland - A lot of bok choy in the dashi which was slightly bitter - The mushrooms in the dashi were nice but didn't give enough umami to the dish White Chocolate & Cranberry (2) and Dark Chocolate (1) Donuts ($9.00 for the 3 donuts) x1 - The cranberry was only on one side of the donut, leading to half the donut being extremely tart and the other half being just white chocolate - The dark chocolate donut was overpowered by the dark chocolate sauce (which felt like a 80-90% dark chocolate), leading to only bitterness - The dark chocolate donut should be tweaked to add something to cut the bitterness, such as a citrus or caramel Respect Your Elders ($14.00 each) x1 - Strawberry flavor came through - A great summer drink Atmosphere and Site: - The site is in an amazing location off of Byward Market tucked away from the busy street - The site offered indoor seating in both a sunroom and main ground floor as well as outdoor seating - The indoor seating in the sunroom had a 'greenhouse' sort of effect which made the sunroom seating a bit humid - The overall décor and art in the restaurant were very nice - Beautiful exposed stone walls - The finishings (such as the salt lamp lights) could be improved so they are less tacky - Some dish wear should be replaced (we had a significantly scratched up bowl) Service: - The appetizers and drinks came out within 10~ after ordering them, the entrees came out 15~ mins after the appetizers (good pacing), strangely the donuts (dessert) took around 15~ mins (quite long) to come after placing the dessert order - The wait staff seemed extremely busy and/or understaffed and getting service at our table was slow - The dirty dishes remained on our table for a fairly long time after finishing the appetizer course and the entrée course

The food was AMAZING! Except for the Pork Dumplings mine came out cold and dry. Definitely a great place to try out different types of food and drinks. Although, the service was not great. The food did not come out all around the same time so there were some people eating and some not. Very poor execution on the kitchen area. The server Olivia was barely at our table, didn’t check in on us or gave us any recommendations on drinks. Didn’t even bring water until we asked repeatedly. My friends and I requested the dessert tower to be presented, but she bought it out when half of us weren’t there. So it made things awkward. Maybe they were having an off night, but other than that, everything was great. Great patio feel.

Cozy, yet spacious fine dining experience. The dim lighting added to the coziness. I had the green papaya salad and coconut fritters; they are both vegan and were delicious!

This was our first stop when we arrived in Ottawa. The atmosphere was pleasant and had good vibes. We had a few dishes, some were good others weren’t memorable like the seafood pancake, thought it was meh snd would not order again. Price/value/ taste was not there. However, I really enjoyed the papaya salad.

Such a great experience, the food and service was excellent. The Pork belly taco was so good, highly recommend trying those if you visit here. Everything tasted great. The dishes aren't big so you can get a few things to try a variety of different dishes. They bring out the dishes as they are ready which I liked. This restaurant is on the pricer side, but it is worth it as a treat or special occasion. Just check their menu so you know what to expect.

Please train your staff not to stand over the customer’s shoulder while they are paying. This really bothered me. As I was entering my tip amount and my PIN the staff that brought the debit machine was standing right behind me. Very off–putting. The food was flavourful and fresh tasting. There are plenty options for those with dietary restrictions. I also really like the atmosphere. The descriptions given by the servers of the portions is WAY off. The appetizers were described as „regular appetizer size“ but I thought they were huge — a meal unto themselves. I ordered 2 apps instead of an entrée but had I known the size I would have only ordered one. Actually, the more I write the more I realize how unimpressed I was. The service was rather slow considering the restaurant was not overly crowded when I was there. I think we had about 3–4 different people bring our orders to the table (not including the shoulder–hoverer) so I was never really sure who are server was. Overall, I don’t think I’ll be back.

Thank you very much for excellent service and delicious food. We ordered an assortment of food for appetizers, mains and deserts. Everything was excellent presentation, very detailed and delicious. Steph was a very positive, engaged and detailed server. She was very personable, kind and accommodating for my many allergies. Thank you for asking for a gluten-free/dairy free dessert from the eighteen kitchen. Overall amazing experience and we love bringing our to Sidedoor!

Interesting modern, asian fusion menu. Food came out quickly after ordering but follow-up could have been better. Entrance is hidden from the main street. Never knew it existed even though I'm in the market all the time.

I threw my sister a surprise baby sprinkle at Sidedoor and it was a great experience. Kimberly was awesome to work with and very helpful in getting things organized. The private room was spacious and made us feel like we were the only ones there. Everything I tasted that day was delicious, the beef was so tender and the donuts were little bites of heaven! Would definitely recommend holding an event here!

The food was really good and the staff were very nice. Only reason why I'm giving 4 stars is because the process were pretty high and the rice was not included with the curry dishes, you had to pay $4 extra.

We ordered a variety of dishes including the salmon sashimi, fish tacos, calamari, kimchi fried rice, the new chicken dish and black cod. Other than the fish tacos and kimchi fried rice, everything was almost inedible. We actually had to send the chicken back as it was improperly cooked and had a raw chicken thigh flavour. The salmon was poorly cut into thick raggedy slices and was chewy and fishy. AYCE sushi places provide higher quality salmon. The calamari was soggy, oily and fishy with no flavour. The black cod was in 500 mL of soy sauce and was also fishy in flavour. I think this restaurant is more about presentation and vibes but the food quality was lacklustre. We spent $200 on mediocre food and would not recommend this restaurant. Ottawa has many restaurants in this price range and below that offer much more.

I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Ottawa! The food was outstanding and the service was phenomenal. We absolutely loved every dish we had but in still dreaming about the Vietnamese pancake, suggested to us by the waitress and the lobster curry. I wish we had saved room for the donuts because they also looked out of this world. We enjoyed the cocktails as well, I had the cleanse which was very refreshing and hubby had the smoke and mirrors which was a great drink to start off the night with. We followed up our cocktails with warm sake which really paired well with our meal.

It was dark when I took the photos but the food was phenomenal. The braised beef or the poached shrimp are the best entrees!!! Cocktails were also on point. The Gyoza was the best app. Highly recommend if you’re in town.

What a beautiful little restaurant. From certain Vantage points you can see into the kitchen which is always lovely. We ordered mushroom tacos, and char sui tacos and shared them. We finished off with these lovely handmade donuts, which was the perfect portion for an early dinner. The tacos were lovely with just the right amount of seasoning, I particularly like the flavor of the mushroom taco. The donuts came warm and the server was kind enough to bring us a knife so we could share them.

Had a chance to try this place. Not bad overall but I am not really into spicy food. the braised beef I ordered is a bit spicy. (The waiter told me it's not spicy) My rating is 4/5.

This restaurant had a beautiful atmosphere. Service was good, nothing outstanding. However, with groups of 6 or more - gratuity is already included in the bill for 18% Seared halibut 8/10 - The fish was tender and not dry, the Tom yum flavours were delicious and mildly spicy. Calamari 8/10 - was delicious and cut into big chunks rather than the traditional “rings”. The batter was light, however the calamari was quite oily - as there was also a pool of oil at the bottom of the bowl. The dipping sauce that came with it was delicious to which I think was fish sauce based. Butter Poached Shrimp 5/10 - spicy for my liking. The spice in the curry was overpowering and therefore I couldn’t enjoy the flavours of the curry. If there was an option to make it mild it would be better for those that have a hard time with spice. There was 4-5 shrimp in the bowl. For 44$ it was a bit frustrating that you had to pay extra for a side of rice and/or naan bread.

Went for a staff luncheon of 12 folks, mixed reviews but it was a good experience overall. Beautiful place, I ordered the Sidedoor Salad, the avocado was black and the greens had some mushy pieces and didn’t taste washed. Ordered the shrimp green curry and the flavour was great but the shrimps were so massive (which is awesome, I’ve never seen shrimp that large) but I think they were a little underdone because of that. My colleague who ordered the same thing said hers was good though. Another colleague ordered the Korean rice bowl with the pork belly but that was burnt crisp so she replaced with the tofu which she said was wonderful. We ordered the dozen donuts which were impeccable, still warm and so fluffy. Great lunch but food could’ve been better considering the price.

The food was ordinary not incredible. The price were way too high for what you get. It was nothing special. The cod was $32 for 2 tiny pieces of fish. Papaya salad almost $20. Sashimi was bland and tiny. Also almost $20. What a joke. Cocktails were nothing special either. We ended up paying 140$ for 2 appetizers and a main dish with 2 cocktails. Again go elsewhere. Worst part is when you pay. They suggest 18% as a minimum tipping rate, calculated on total prices with taxes. Should be 10% on non taxed total as a minimum. Sneaky. Clearly no social distancing. The person behind me was at least than 1m.

I’ve visited a few years ago and remembered it being fantastic and flavourful. However, I visited for lunch recently and had a very mediocre experience. I ordered the pork tacos and beef baos. The beef baos were underwhelming - there was not nearly enough filling in the baos and the meat was relatively dry as opposed to the saucy, juicy baos I expected. The flavours were decent, but not mind blowing. The pork tacos are abysmally small - a circle the size of my palm. The pork was dry as well even though it was supposed to be pork carnitas. They were stingy with the pineapples too - maybe one or two tiny pieces in each taco. The flavours were ok, but I would bet it wouldn’t be that much better than getting the same from chipotle down the street. The service was disappointing as well. The server’s attitude was slightly rude or condescending? I can’t quite put my finger on it, but it wasn’t very pleasant. He often forgot to bring something every time he returned to our table. Lastly, two of my friends ordered ice cream, specifying that they would like it at the end of the meal, in case they felt that they needed to add more items in between. And yet, the ice cream was brought out with the appetizers! We were eating on the patio too, so our only choices were to start with the ice cream or drink the melted remains afterwards. You would think it’s just common sense to keep the ice cream until the end… In total, my lunch cost me around $40 after tip… for two tiny tacos, two understuffed baos, and mediocre disappointing service. Definitely not worth it. The only thing positive I can say is that the decor is nice.

Really nice little spot nestled in a back alley in the market. Our server was excellent and I would say the service was akin to what you would expect at a 5 star establishment. The food is quite tasty and the chef clearly takes some creative liberties which we all enjoyed. From a value standpoint however and looking at competing venues , the price is 1.5-2x higher than what one would expect. All in all still enjoyed and likely wouldn't dissuade us from returning.

This restaurant is beautiful and well-situated in the Byward market. Our meals were delicious. I had the braised beef in a curry. The meat was succulent, the curry to die for and it was enough to feed two people. My husband had the Lamb and Pork tacos. They were absolutely delicious. He ordered the fries with the special sauce (a homemade aïoli with mustard sauce and other things) but soon realized it was too much food. (They were tasty as well.). Our waitress was very sweet but she only came to the table maybe 3 times before the bill and the restaurant was not very busy which is why I put the service at 3. Overall, great food. Would come back for it and hope for better service.

Really fun and great food! Lots of GF options! We ordered a whole lot of different starters and tacos, a few at a time. Sebastian was wonderful, explained the menu and kept the dishes coming. We really reccommend the Vietnamese pancakes, fish tacos, greens, tuna sushimi, avocado-cucumber salad - everything actually. Also, try to get a table with the blue couches. So cosy and comfy! Added photo of tuna sashimi.

Sidedoor is among my favourite restaurants in Ottawa and always a reliable choice, whether it's a date, socializing with friends, special event, meeting with colleagues etc. The food is consistently delicious, the atmosphere and ambience is exquisite and simultaneously laid-back, and the service is generally excellent. I especially love that many of their dishes can be made vegan and the servers are highly receptive to such requests. The vegan 'chorizo' tacos are incredibly tasty and their doughnuts (I highly recommend the white chocolate cranberry flavour) are the best dessert ever. I usually have dinner or evening drinks at Sidedoor but recently had lunch here and absolutely loved the Sidedoor 'lunchbox' option, which included two tacos of your choice, the chef inspired soup of the day, and a salad. The quality of food and variety for the price was impressive.

Generous portions that are absolutely shareable. We ordered fish taco's (which were the best I ever tasted), calamari and two mains with rice and quickly realized it was way too much food! that said we were able to take some home and enjoy all of it the next day as well. The poached lobster in green curry was amazing and the abundant calamari was tender fresh and cooked to perfection! Great wine selection too. We will certainly return!

Excellent food ! really ! The best I have had in Canada in over 6 years. I was really impressed by the seasonings, it was just perfect ! big thank to the chef ! On the other hand, where it is well know throught the country that the service is great everywhere you go (which is mostly the case), we were so surprised by the one we had at that restaurant. First, we ordered everything at once, appetizers and mains, I should not emphasize that you should NOT bring them ALL AT ONCE. As If I order a steak and make sure with you it is cooked not raw. It is just for convenience purposes and we do it all the time and never such a thing happened before (or at least they ask). Second, we had to serve ourselves from the bottle of wine, the waiteress was passing by and doing nothing. That is not appropriate. I would not mind if I DID NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR TIP at the end, yet, I had to. We asked her to take a picture of my friend and me, she avoided that. Scared of Covid ? then just shut the thing off or stay home ( she did take a picture of neighbors though).

The curri s were delicious, however to note the rice is extra!! We were a group of 4 and had 1 fish taco each and 1 portion of dumplings; then had 3 curries and the bimpibap. It was way too much food for us to finish, so we ended up taking over half it home! I had the side door, which as far as I can tell is a burbon twist on a sidecar, was delicious.

  • 4/5 Iona B. 4 years ago on Google
We had the fish tacos, the dumplings, all three curries (lobster, beef, lentil) and the bibimbap. The tacos are great and the dumplings were good too. The sauce in the lobster curry was amazing and the beef was very tender. The lentil curry was less good and the tofu in it was quite burnt. The bibimbap was good but there were a lot of flavours going on in it. For a party of 4 I would recommend a couple of starters and then the beef and lobster curries since they are quite large (we ended up taking a lot home). Also, given the price, I feel like they should include rice with the curries (a bowl of rice is $4 extra). The doughnuts were great.

Excellent spot for lunch. The daily special was one that I’ll be back for (and soon). For under $20 you can get tacos (comes in a pair), side green salad and the daily soup. The cost for the soup and salad is $3 over what the tacos alone cost. I highly recommend the beef tacos ... and the pork ones are also delicious. Bonus, if you bring a friend or colleague you can swap one taco so you get to try two.

Pretty disappointed with this restaurant. First of all, we chose this place out of all options in the city, to celebrate our anniversary. We made a reservation weeks in advance at 4:30. We got there, all the servers were downstairs talking and folding napkins. Finally someone came up and sat us down. It took a while for the server to come and he said the kitchen doesn’t open until 5:00. This was never mentioned when making the reservation. And they never called to confirm either. This same server was cocky and arrogant. Plus, the words service were probably not in his mind. When brining items whether it was food or drinks, he would leave them at the end of the table, and good luck to you if you had to move them. Shouldn’t he serve you? That’s what he’s working there, no? Most horrible of all, the bathrooms. Smelly, run down, needing essential repairs (see pictures)

Side Door Ottawa knows what they are doing ! They ambiance is pretty nice with roomy seats and booths. This is a great spot for a Date or a group of friends. They have a fantastic drink menu , but what really SHINES is their FOOD!!! They have some dishes that have incredible flavor and quality ingredients. If you do end up going there , you have to try their Lobster Curry and Beef Panaeng in a curry sauce! Deserts are pretty great too! The Service has been pretty good every time we go as well, but I usually go to have some good food. Try it out. You wont be disappointed. Sorry for the bad quality pics , We were starving and just wanted to dig in

Sidedoor is THE place to host any event or even just to have dinner with friends or a date night. We just had a COVID engagement party there last weekend and the team went above and beyond to ensure my guests and I had a great time. Kim is incredible at her job and decor/coordination/planning went off without a hitch. The staff at Sidedoor is attentive, meticulous, and hardworking - special thank you to Zach who helped with takedown the day after our event and Earl who kept everything running smoothly. The staff set up and took down all of our decor with great care. Guests left the party singing the staff’s praises! Food was incredible and the atmosphere was unbeatable. Thank you so much to Sidedoor for hosting us - everyone was a pleasure to work with. We will be back!

Great venue for a small wedding. We went to one with 40 people and it was great: private room with lots of space, good ambience, and really good food. The curried beef was excellent. Very accommodating of allergies and dietary needs. The staff are excellent.

This is a tapas-style fusion joint and although I loved the taste (tangy, spicy, interesting textures) and the portions were fairly generous, there were some caveats: one item we ordered arrived very late in the meal and was not made to the order (steak, which we had been assured were going to be medium-well, ended up being incredibly rare); a bit disappointing aspects ("on a bed of vegetables" = a few limp greens in the case of the steak); server didn't take our drinks order until we were ready to order food; and the cost of the meal was roughly 75% higher than we would have expected to pay for the caliber of the experience.

Delicious food! Tacos are some of the best we've had. Green curry was perfect. Donuts are good (white chocolate cranberry one is awesome). Wonderful terasse in a beautiful court yard away from foot and car traffic. Welcoming to kids. We shared plates and the waiting staff was very kind and friendly.

Meat dishes were good and drinks were great. Unique Asian fusion dishes. Tried to call to ask a question but phone never gets answered after a few times.

It had been nearly 10 years since we'd been here, and this was the first time with the two kids. We had a great time. Food was delicious; we mainly went with small plates to share and everything was excellent. Wings are deservedly popular, the eggplant bao was also a nice veg option. Coconut ice cream + chocolate donuts was excellent as a dessert. Still one of the best options in the market.

Great presentation. Yummy food. Ample options and very unique dishes available. Kind of on the expensive but totally worth it. 🙌🏻
