One of the nicer views within Ottawa overlooking the Locks with a beautiful backdrop of the Ottawa River. It’s a fully functional lock system still run by actual people just like it was in the old days and it’s really interesting to catch them moving boats up and down the Canal. I’ve been there multiple times now and somehow I never get bored of it. I highly recommend a quick visit here either to snap of few pics or if you have some time to spare just hangout and watch them transport some boats through 💯

What a great spot here in Ottawa! It’s in the heart of downtown next to the Chateau Laurier and near the parliament. The famous Rideau Canal that connects to the Ottawa River. It’s very scenic and interesting as well if you can catch the process in which the boats cross each step. Very nice! 😎👍

They look absolutely gorgeous and beautiful in the winter is they look in summer - just different and covered in snow! Must see when in Ottawa, in the historic parliament hill area.

A very interesting canal to visit. You can walk on the gates to cross the canal. Easy to get to, a very nice path with a small climb and hill. You don't see a lot of boats on the canal. Plenty of parking near by and the path is clean.

One of its kind, simply a masterpiece. If Lady Luck favours you then you can see live action on how doors are managed and boats passes 🥰

Great area for photos and a gateway to the capital buildings, the Fairmont Hotel, and the Rideau Canal. It was so interesting watching the workers move the big gates with locking mechanisms.

Amazing locks, still functioning. Enjoyed watching the boats were lifted up. At the end of the canal, the views were beautiful.

Never miss boat ride on Ridue Canal, you will find different types of rides. Booking queue will be there on weekends. Boating is an amazing experience to see many historic landmarks. Adjacent to the Parliament hill. Walkable distance from the other main Tourist spots. Canal Locks are one time watch. There are specific timings to see Locking operations.

A beautiful and scenic spot in Ottawa, but also full of history. It’s a popular spot for photoshoots with a mix of old European inspired architecture and lush greenery and water views. It’s usually a busy spot on the weekends but that doesn’t take away from it. A great spot for a stroll and to learn about the locks systems and how they were built (you can do that at the Bytown Museum located at the end of the locks).

The view from the locks are spectacular. The trees in autumn are gorgeous. You can walk along the locks and even cross over on top of them. It is nice to see the waterfalls and you get some exercise going up and down the hill. This is a nice attraction if you are in the Parliament Hill area.

Love seeing the locks and crossing it! Specially when you see how they operate it by hand just like the way they did back in the day. Just fun to see and experience it. My nephews enjoyed crossing the locks, they’re too brave! A must see when in Ottawa!

This is amazing to see how the boat locks work in person, especially with them using a manual door opening system which is tedious work in today's day and age! If you are lucky however you will see it in action by the staff on the grounds!

The Rideau Canal was officially opened in the summer of 1832. It was an amazing achievement. For most of its length of 202 km, the new canal passed through an unsettled wilderness where By and his workers managed to create forty-seven locks, some of them posing a considerable engineering challenge. Measured against what was accomplished, the financial cost was low 800, 000 ($110 million) But far from applauding the achievement, the British Parliament of 1832 expressed its shock at the expenditure of such a sum of money and recalled By to face a parliamentary inquiry into his activities. While intensive investigation absolved Colonel By of any kind of mismanagement, he never received the honours his achievement should have earned him. He retired to private life, and died a disappointed man. A romantic place to visit and a must visit if you are in Ottawa!! Highly recommend visiting in the winter when it converts into the world’s longest skating rink.

Really cool to see it in action if you like this kind of thing. The locks are still manually operated and it takes about 90 minutes for a boat to get through the entire length

The Locks beside Parliament Hill in Ottawa are super cool! We spent about an hour watching boats move from the lower section of the Rideau Canal to the higher section. It was pretty fascinating and entertains both young and old! With the backdrop of the Parliament Buildings, you can get some pretty nice pictures here!

The Rideau Canals are quite a unique area, right near Parliament Hill in Ottawa. It's especially interesting when boats are in the process of using the canal system. I would highly recommend a visit if you are in the Ottawa area!

The most wonderful place in Ottawa, without a doubt. During our time in Ottawa, we came here every day, spending hours watching the boats being lifted through the historic locks and winding down each evening at the foot of the canal. For those seeking a real highlight, catching a sunset here on a clear day is a must. But even from the bridge, the sunset has its own unique charm.

We stood from above and got to see them lowering the boats down. It was very cool to see! I love that this is something the pedestrians can see from above.

Great spot to watch how Rideau Canal connects to Ottawa River. At this very spot you could take great pictures just next to the Château Laurier. If you take a picture during the day and one during the night, you will feel and enjoy the versatility of this amazing spot. The locks were built from 1826 to 1831 and they continue stealing "wows" from people in 2021. Here you could see the first eight locks.(Lock 1 to Lock 8).

(Translated by Google) This sculpture is beautiful! Represents five women who decided to write a petition asking for clarification regarding the word "people" mentioned in section 24 of the British North America Act. Their intent was to receive a positive response, that women be considered as "people" in so that they can be elected to the Senate. The response from the Supreme Court of Canada was negative stating that women were not regarded as people.

One of the nicest attractions in Ottawa. Especially if you are lucky enough to see a boat going up or down (the whole crossing takes almost 1.5 hour for the boat to go through all the levels)

(Translated by Google) Cool! It is a monument in the Canadian Parliament Assembly as a tribute to female emancipation. It is on the right side of the main building. It may go unnoticed for anyone not in this direction. Despite the seriousness of the subject, it promises funny pictures. (Original) Bacana! É um monumento no conjunto do Parlamento Canadense em homenagem a emancipação feminina. Fica ao lado direito do edifício principal. Pode passar despercebido para quem não for nesta direção. Such a fantastic sight. The locks are in such a short distance of one another it really shows how much of a feat of engineering it really is. There's a little coffee shop type place at the bottom of the walkway and you can follow the path down and around to the river from the canal. The steps are quite steep so it's not for everyone. We visited twice in 2017 and made sure we had a wander both times.

Rideau Canal Locks is connected to Ottawa River in the north and located between Parliament Hill and Hotel Chateau Laurier. A beautiful place and must see in Ottawa. Lots of tourists as well as locals come to watch the yachts travel through the locks during the summer months.

  • 4/5 Vishal S. 4 years ago on Google
I really liked it, but I will take away a star as it smells bad when you go near, but how they collect water between gates to let boats and ships pass, it was really an amazing to watch. It has been constructed at beautiful with watching spot, right in between Chateau Laurier and Parliament Hill, but you need to walk down some good set of steps to have a better look at these breath-taking locks. I took the pictures from same place over the bridge on different days. Amazing view when the water runs down the river. Worth watching and definite attraction if you are visiting Ottawa and it is situated in centre of most visited areas

  • 5/5 Robin A. 4 years ago on Google
The kids loved it. They enjoyed walking back and forth on the locks and the view was spectacular. Made a day of walking from sparks street to the byward market and back and had a great time. Tulips were fantastic and the city was vibrant that day. One of the few days the sun peeked through the clouds this year.

Created in 2000, this monument is a tribute the Famous Five: Irene Parlby, Louise McKinney, Nellie McClung, Emily Murphy and Henrietta Muir Edwards, all from Alberta. Until 1929, women were not considered persons under Canadian law. This statue depicts a scene from Canadian history. Here, five exceptional Canadian women who led the fight for legal recognition as persons have just learned that they'd won.

A must see landmark in Ottawa. Beautiful no matter what time of day, but the sunsets are the ideal time to see it. If you can witness the locks actually lifting and lowering a boat that's a real treat.

  • 5/5 Shannon M. 3 years ago on Google
Watched 3 boats coming up the lochs. Workers explained the process..talked to owners of the boats. Kids loved the history and the process. Must see!
