On the second day of my trip to Ottawa, I allocated three hours here, but it turned out to be far from enough. Just exploring first floor took me two hours. I suggest art enthusiasts reserve at least 6 hours for this place. Apart from the exhibits, the art museum itself is a masterpiece. Definitely worth revisiting. Take your time to savor it. I discovered an interesting detail – everyone tacitly placed stickers on the traffic light poles at the entrance, creating a humorous piece of art.

I love seeing modern art: not because I like modern art, but because I like to see what can get into an art gallery, and especially what extraordinary description some of these artists come up with. I present the highlights of this gallery: a photo of a paper bag. A white canvas, black lines, and a blue square! Only two colours on a canvas!! A white canvas, absolutely brilliant!!! A pair of pants picked up from the back alley. A wire running diagonally across a room, so insightful? There were deeper, reflective, and historically significant pieces elsewhere in the gallery, but those are boring. I give this a 14 out of 17 black lines, you should visit this gallery.

Architecture & Interior - With it's high vaulted ceilings and glass windows, you immediately get a sense of a walking in. This gallery is pretty big. Housing all kinds exhibits, artworks, and collection. It was soothing to just walk around. Artworks/Exhibits/collections - There was all types of art when I was there. You get a taste of different styles, which I enjoyed. Service - The staff were all professional and friendly. Couldn't ask for more. Highly recommend to come if you are an Art Lover.

I spent almost half a day here. Yes, I was that slow in reading details about the artists and I find them all interesting. Both big and small art, it just mesmerizing imagining what they were thinking creating those art. The boutique shop is also nice.

An art gallery is located in the Canada capital city of Ottawa. it is nearby the byward market area. I will suggest to purchase your ticket online so that you won't be needing to line up to do the purchase when you're there. If you're able to do so, check in your coat so you won't be needing to carry it around when you're enjoying the art in the gallery. it will take some time for you to check out the first and second floor so be prepared to spend about two to three hours inside the gallery. If you want to check out the shop before you leave, make sure you get to the entrance not too close to the closing time since the shop won't let anymore Shoppers in when is about to close the gallery.

I would like to really recommend this place for people. First of all, you can look at the parliament building at good location. Secondly, this museum has a variety of art works. Especially,I really liked that this museum had a lot of paintings by famous artists, but not necessarily their most famous works. It made me realize that these artists had also created such paintings, and I really enjoyed being able to see their less well-known works.

An amazing place to visit. The atmosphere and exhibits were exceptional. The plethora of artwork was mesmerizing. There is a free coat check which was a really nice surprise. This is a must see when you're in the area. I highly recommend a visit here. Staff was friendly and gift shop was nice. They should have more stickers I could put on my laptop. Overall an outstanding experience.

A very good place to admire and enjoy art .. Amazing collection of art and artefacts from a wide variety of genres. Very expansive landscape and well organized. Feels like in an art heaven!! Definitely set aside 3-4 hrs at a minimum if you’d like to browse through everything this place has to offer. There is a boutique shop inside it..

This is my favourite place in the Capital to spend a few hours walking around and taking it all in. The collections are wonderful and the space is wide and serene. This Thursday evening, we took advantage of a free entry and saw the contemporary exhibit. There were a few iron sculptures that caught my eye. Go and see for yourself you won't be disappointed.

This art gallery is huge! We didn't plan very well going in thinking two hours will be enough to see everything.... they must have at least 500 art pieces.. May be more! A lot of good pieces all the way from Renaissance to contemporary.

Love the The National Gallery of Canada, it is with rich collections and the architect itself is charming, both from outside and inside, like a piece of arts. On July 2nd there displays Impressionism of Canada, those nice paintings give us good surprise! Regret we only have two hours there, next time would come for a whole day visit!

The collections are absolutely wonderful. You will find multiple concepts under one roof, which appeal to many. Even if you're not a fan of art, this is a great place to visit for a few hours. I truly enjoyed the "General Idea" exhibit. They had many exhibits that would make you stop, ponder, be in awe, and walk away with a greater appreciation for art. I would highly recommend visiting as they admission in inexpensive (20$ for adults, 10$ for students with your card). It was a great way to spend an afternoon and learn about various artists.

Nice place to spend a few hours exploring modern and traditional art. The collections include indigenous, European and British art including paintings by Canadian artists. The architecture of the building is really beautiful inside and out, a place worth visiting for families.

One of the iconic tourist attractions in Ottawa. Take your time to be with the most iconic artists in the world. It is located minutes walking from Parliament Hill and just in front of Notre Dame's church. The giant spider located in front of the entrance will open the museum doors for you.

The National Gallery of Canada is a great place to visit for a few hours! It is about a 15 minute scenic walk from the parliament buildings, with great views of the Ottawa River! Outside the gallery there are some cool pictures to be had, especially the large spider sculpture, named Maman! If you’re already visiting downtown, this is a definite must see!

Allow at least 4 hours to be able to truly explore and enjoy this stunning place - a must-visit spot for art lovers and families.

A place to admire and enjoy art. They have many thousands of art work from many artists. They have temporary exhibitions like the one called "Rembrandt in Amsterdam" from July 16 to September 6, 2021. The last Rembrandt exhibition in Canada was in 1969 (300 years after Rembrandt passed away) and this is the first exhibition in the National Gallery of Canada. The prices go from 10 to 20 CAD and they also have family packages. Be careful while buying your tickets, because it may or may not include Rembrandt exhibition due to visitors number control. You will enjoy it and in this moment it is a great shot to take advantage right now to visit this amazing place. It is very easy to find, just look for "Mamam," which is a bronze, stainless steel and marble sculpture by Louise Bourgeois. (The marble is used to represent the female spider's eggs). By the way, the big spider was bought by the National Gallery of Canada for 3.2 million CAD in 2005, well this is what some people say. ;) You will love this Gallery.

Fairly well organized and there are plenty of great pieces of art, lots from Canadian history and a good number from Europe and the USA too. Not a fan of the modern art they have but that’s all subjective. It’s in a central location downtown and is a great spot for both locals and tourists.

Impressed by this place. Even if it’s looks as a not big from outside, that’s huge and massively inside. You can find Canadian and before-colonization artifacts and masterpieces, then enjoy modern vision with art of sound and video. You can find a General vision exhibition- look of 80s and alternative vision. Photo exhibition. Europe and Americas paintings and sculptures. Worth to spend 4+ hours of walk, and joy. P.s if you go on Thursdays, after 5 pm till 8 pm, free admission. Otherwise totally worth $20 per adult.

Very expensive entry fee. No veteran pricing. The collection is very good. Food prices are ridiculously high. All in all, I enjoyed the art. But I just made my last visit. Just too much money. Can't imagine the visit cost without the taxpayers money.

Impressive place. Coming from bigger cities many museums may seem a bit underwhelming in ottawa but not this one. Lots of amazing art from great well know artists, great architecture. A mix of classic and modern. In a great area too!

Free to visit on Thursday evenings after 5pm! Get a free ticket online in advance or ask for a physical ticket when you walk in. There are art activities in the large atrium and you can purchase snacks and drinks from the bar. Lots of art from classical to Indigenous to Canadian to modern. You could spend a whole evening and not see everything the gallery has to offer. There’s also a free coat check. There will be a long lineup near closing time to try to not leave at the very end if you don’t want to wait. There hasn’t been a line to enter the past few times I’ve been. They give you a sticker to wear on your shirt or hand in exchange for the ticket. Lots of people stick them up at the lamp post outside at the curb.

It’s a very nice museum. I loved seeing the arts and crafts of Canada’s people over the years. The old paintings were really beautiful and well restored. Even though I am not a fan of modern art, it was still pretty cool. The museum was really big and clean. Really recommend if you like art.

Beautiful art gallery in the heart of Ottawa. There was plenty if exhibits to look at ranging from Inuit art to the group of 7. There was a few interactive exhibits that played movies and slideshows to immerse the crowd. They also had activities for kids, specifically to find the monsters in their monster art gallery. This museum was a blast. I will definitely go again.

At the moment they're doing free admissions so it's a great opportunity to see Canadian art. The gallery is huge and you can spend hours here, the gift shop had some very unique art related merchandise as well. There is no route set for the gallery which made for a tiring experience, we didn't know where to walk to since everywhere looked the same. Had to just try to recognize the artwork and pick a random route to move towards. I wish they would at least create a map route people can opt to follow, rather than nothing at all.

You can spend hours and hours and hours here and still not make it out of the 1st floor. Paintings by the Canadian artists are absolutely stunning! The large Riopelle panels - the trios, was breath taking. Absolutely please take the time to read each label for the description.

One of the security gaurds kept stalking me and really made me feel uncomfortable. As i walked theough his section he kept moving from spot to spot to stare at me. I walker through his section 3 times and each tie he followed me. I asked my family and they all agreed he really was being abnoxious. I also found that there wasn't much art from outside of Quebec and Ontario aside from the contemporary art section. The Group of 7 works are amazing and worth the cost of admission alone.

Nice place if one is intrested in art and painting. every Thursday after 5or 6pm until closing (8pm) the museum is free for anyone. there are three floors and keep enough time as it huge building with many painting and sculpture to even look quickly. it's a paradise to art admirers. parking is paid and the traffic is busy mostly due to the location. I would suggest to take transit or uber to have hassle free ride.

This gallery contains a diverse and impressive display of art. Definitely worth a visit if in the Ottawa area, and I would recommend prioritizing a visit here to any tourists. One of my favourites. Their classical collection is amazing (not posting the pics, but they have Gogh, Klimt, Monet among many more). I love checking out their seasonal collections too, always nice to learn about different movements. Thursday after 5 is free, I usually reserve it beforehand (can be done on the same day)

never gets old. i’ve been going to the art museum since i was very young, i recently went back for the first time in a few years and i had forgotten just how much i love being here. the art is beautiful, it all tells a story of a time that deserves to be celebrated and captured through art. the atmosphere is calming, the people are respectful and the downtown location is great for looking over the river. we bought our tickets at the door, it was $20/person but totally worth it.

My visit to the National Gallery of Canada was a truly enriching experience. The diverse collection of art, both Canadian and international, left me captivated by the creativity on display. Exploring the works of the Group of Seven was a highlight, offering a deep dive into Canada's artistic heritage. What made my visit even more special was the opportunity to participate in the wax sculpture making activity. This hands-on experience added an interactive and creative dimension to my museum visit. The National Gallery of Canada is not just a repository of art; it's a dynamic space that engages visitors in meaningful ways. A must-visit for art enthusiasts seeking both inspiration and a touch of artistic expression.

We were limited by our schedule to an evening visit and attended the National Gallery on Thursday night when attendance was free after 5pm. We only visited the First floor and took in the Riopelle 100 Anniversary exhibit and the Canadian Art permanent exhibition. The latter is much more than just the Group of Seven. It is clearly worth the entry price on its own. Highlights included numerous Inuit pieces, Elizabeth Wood's sculpture, Lawrence's painting of his Superior visit, and several other outstanding works.

A slow Sunday afternoon with grey skies was the perfect day to visit the National Gallery for the Jean Riopelle Special Exhibit plus a tour through the Canadian and Indigenous Gallery followed by pleasant time sitting in the Rideau Chapel exhibit. Always a pleasure and delight to learn more about the artists who bring light, colour, culture, and history to our narrow day to day lives. In warmer weather the NAG garden is also in itself a piece of living art in addition to some compelling sculptures. A very worthwhile location for visitors coming to the Nation's Capital!

Visited on Thursday afternoon after 5pm (the admission is free on this day and time). The museum has a great collection of art from many different periods of time. There are a lot of rotating exhibits as well. The small hall that offers drinks and snacks has a great view of Parliament Hill, and plays contemporary music as well. The seasonal drink was delicious 😋 would definitely come here again!

A must for any art lover visiting Ottawa. It has a large collection of both modern and classical art. You won't be able to see everything in one visit but it's still worth it to just do one gallery. Could not recommended enough.

The gallery is a great example of all the amazing canadian art. I especially love all the Tom Thomson paintings since he is my favourite artist. There are landscape paintings of many different areas of Canada by many different artists. On Thursday evenings, the museum is free between 5-8pm. There is a great view of parliament from the foyer.

I've been to many museums around the world and I wasn't sure what to expect of Ottawa's galleries and museums. They kinda are not really well known for holding world's finest artistic treasures. But I was wrong - the architecture of this building, installations, art curating, organization - and most importantly, art description and labelling - is excellent. Really out there with the best. I won't reveal too much, except that it is a must visit in Ottawa and to put aside 2 hours for a quick run through or 4 hours for detailed and careful enjoyment.

One of the main attraction listed for Ottawa tour. We visited the place this year amid covid. It was less crowded as expected. This place is right at the center and many other attractikns are nearby on walking distance. The tour starts from 10am on weekends and it is free of cost. This Gallery is huge and there are lots of paintings and sculptures to look out for. It will take at least 1 hour for sure to cover this place and if you are really into the arts then it might take even more. Inside the gallery the photography is prohibited but Outside the Gallery you can click photos with the big spider like structure and also in front of notre dame church.

It is always a treat to visit. Love how the "permanent" galleries are updated from time to time. Was pleased to see the new William Kentridge sculpture and installation. Saw in Cape Town in 2018 and had no idea NGC acquired. Brilliant. Pity the cafeteria is closed, it takes 4-6 hours to get through most of it, esp if doing the temp exhibit. Nice location and good walks across by the river.

Great option for the family. They are very COVID organized and the exhibits are all wonderful to spend a day at the museum.

As a local resident, we visit the gallery about twice a year and it never disappoints. It’s a must see for tourists (I highly recommend) as the architecture in and outside the building is stunning. There are always beautiful and interesting exhibits or collections on display. Happy Goat coffee shop also a great addition to the space for those needing a place to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee and snacks.

Great Architecture. Good collections of ancient oil paintings and objects used in earlier centuries. Maintained very neatly and followed covid protocols every where. Staff are good and cooperative. Parking lots were good. Entrance Tickets charged us 22.6 including tax per head. Coats dropping place present inside this place. Few things inside the gallery were absolutely stunning.

You can easily spend the entire day here; I wonder "just" for 4hours The museum has great Canadian and European collections as well as a vast Indigenous and Canadian Gallery; the contemporary section was my favourite. The space is very well organized. Hopefully they'll have the cafeteria open soon again instead of just vending machines.

Good for one time visit.. has some great arts and some boring ones too.. better to go on Thursdays after 5pm it's free entry.

Traditional and modern art exhibits are found on site. Large focus on first people art and history. Great way to spend 4 hours with adults. Small children art gift bags were available to allow you more time to explore the exhibits.

It's well located by Byward Market close by to restaurants and such. Good collection of art including Indigenous and European art. We didn't have time to see all the collections since there's a lot to get thru.

First time going to the National Gallery and it was lovely! I went after work as the gallery provides free admission every Thursday evening from 5pm to 8pm! I was able to see the General Idea exhibit as well as the Canadian and Indigenous artwork on display. The General Idea exhibit was very well done and informative about the thoughts and work that they've done. This ranged from small items to large scale exhibits. I'm excited to go back to see the rest of the galleries!

No audio guide or main pieces recommended. I asked the guy and he was very helpful. For someone that doesn’t understand much about art and was mostly accompanying my mum, need an explained path to follow on the museum to enjoy it. Most galleries in Europe have this… the chapel is amazing tho, great chorus!!

A must visit place when you're in Ottawa, quite difficult to find parking lot, amazing architect from the outside and you'll be impressed when you walk into. A lot of paintings. Has a gift shop with some nice stuffs. Clean restroom and great view of city hall, church....

Fun and very interesting place to visit. It's 60% filled with naked drawings, crazy right? I loved my short time there. If you are a student, you get a discount also, and it's just a 10-minute walk from the mall. I think if you come to Ottawa and want to go to the gallery, you should try this place first before others. Peace.

So much to see, including paintings and sculptures I had only previously seen in books. Plan for a whole day, They give you a sticker that gives in and out privileges so you can come up for air. I chose not to post some pictures because frankly I'm not sure about the rights. I chose 2 photos showing a restoration in progress, a Van Gogh (note the Vincent signature), a Matisse sculpture and a fun sign that could happen if the US installed Checkpoint Charlie on the Canadian border. Naturally it has to be bilingual.

Absolutely gorgeous! It's a must go to places in Ottawa. If you have only a little amount of time to spend inside I'd suggest not to go at all. The paintings and other items are really beautiful and interesting to look at and you would need the entire day to properly go through e everything!

Incredible art and experience. Plan your visit in such a manner that you can spend a lot of time learning and exploring about the art in the museum. Huge collection, very well maintained!

It has an incredible and very diverse collection, it tells the artistic history of Canada, in a very well curated way, with divisions by styles and provinces and artists. it also has on the top floor galleries with artists from Europe such as Picasso, Monet, Van Gogh, Munch. tip: for those who are students, just present the proof card that pays the half price.

I love this museum, many great masterpieces collections you can find, Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet, William Tuner, Gustav Klimt etc. Especially one of huge size masterpieces of Klimt was on the shown borrowed from private collector, attracted attention but no camera was allowed. The giant spider statue at the front square is also interesting.

The gallery is not known for its collections of world arts, rather for Canadian and indigenous arts. Their European collection boasts mediocre pieces of masters such as Van Gogh, Cezane, Monet, Degas and etc. But the piece by Titian and the Third Class Carriage by Daumier are nice surprises. A couple of pieces by Picasso and Dali are nice to see too. Their shop has interesting merchandises featuring lovely totemic symbols by indigenous people. The maman sculpture at its entrance, the magnificent modern glass building with the unique long hallway leading to the atrium and the warm interior palettes of golden flooring, red and blue walls and well-appointed tall chambers more than meet the shortfall in its collections. However, the staff there are cold, no greetings at entrance, no smile at eye contact.

A visit to the Canada National Art Gallery is a must for anyone in Ottawa, whether you're a local or a tourist. It's a place where art, culture, and history converge, offering a truly enriching experience. I left feeling inspired and with a deeper appreciation for the beauty that human creativity can achieve. This gallery is a true gem in the heart of Canada's capital.

Very large museum with a surprisingly large collection of European masters. An excellent retrospective of the art scene in Canada. Architecture that I don't really like from the outside but that works very well on the inside, comfortable. Very recommendable

The National Gallery of Canada is a must visit for art lovers, locals, and visitors to Ottawa. This beautiful 3 storey building has a nice collection of contemporary, Indigenous, Canadian and European art, housing pieces from well known artists like Monet, Van Gogh, Gauguin, and the Group of Seven in its permanent collection. The space is family-friendly, offers guided and auido tours, and activities for all ages. There is also a cafeteria, coffee shop, and restaurant on site for those who wish to spend the day here. The gallery is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm with the exception of Thursdays, where it is open until 8 pm. Admission is free for children 11 and under, Indigenous Peoples, and for all on Thursday evenings after 5 pm. It's recommended to book your free admission ticket online in advance to save time, but you can still get your ticket in person at the box office. Note that the free evenings excludes any special exhibitions. For those with a car, the gallery has an underground parking garage, or you can opt to park on the streets. The underground parking costs $2.75 per half-hour, up to a daily maximum of $14 (Members $12).

I actually didn't visit the actual gallery, just the boutique. It was beautiful. Lots of little gifts and things. I purchased some bookmarks and a Canada maple leaf pin made from the copper of the original parliament buildings. It's a true piece of history. Beautiful building and a lovely spider monument out front called Maman meaning mom. The Tavern at the Gallery was closed but I would've liked to visit it.

Probably the best museum in Ottawa, or at least a strong contender. Getting the opportunity to see the art work of the greats like van Gogh, Rembrandt, Botticelli, Tintoretto, Monet, Bernini, Picasso can be an overwhelming experience. Well connected with public transport, this museum is a must visit if you love art, culture, European Art Evolution, history. The structure of the building is eye catching too. However the sculpture of a giant spider in the front yard can be a bit quirky for some or can be a spot to click a selfie for some depending on their taste and preference. Tip~ Can be a bit pricy so if possible try to utilize the days when the entry is free.

Great museum with lots to see. Lots of great Canadian history works as well as others. I wish I had more time when I went. We were there for about 2 hours and felt like we rushed through it. I would plan for at least 3 hours to see everything.
