This place or monument is such a moniker for what it represents. It stands out and is symbolic to the strife for military conflict and its consequences. Canada has been engaged in many wartime conflicts and has paid the price. The War Memorial is a solemn place rich in history worthy of any visitor to pay respects.

You can not miss this monument in downtown Ottawa. The monument gives homage to the Canadian soldiers and the overseas battles in which they were involved. On either side of the monument, the dates of all those battles are engraved, and it is up to you to check the details of those conflicts on your own

I was here for the 100th anniversary of the First World War battle at Vimy Ridge. Very moving for anyone with family history tied to Canada's. A lot of good people paid in blood for this monument and it's beautiful bronze statuary; if you are a Canadian, you have to make the pilgrimage.

The National War Memorial in Ottawa is a place of profound significance and reverence, and our visit during a weekday evening at sunset left us with a deep appreciation for its beauty and historical importance. As we walked by and approached the memorial, we were immediately struck by its grandeur and the solemn atmosphere that surrounded it. The centerpiece of the memorial, the tomb of the unknown soldier, commanded our attention and evoked a deep sense of respect. It was a moment of reflection, a reminder of the sacrifices made by countless soldiers who fought for Canada. The hushed atmosphere around the tomb spoke volumes about the reverence held for those who gave their lives in service to the nation. We observed that many visitors, like ourselves, were captivated by the memorial's presence and took the opportunity to capture the moment through photographs. It was heartening to witness the shared sentiment of respect and appreciation among the visitors. People were mindful and considerate, maintaining a sense of decorum and allowing the solemnity of the memorial to prevail. The National War Memorial stands as a testament to the wars fought by Canada and serves as a reminder of the courage and sacrifices made by its soldiers. It is a poignant symbol of remembrance and gratitude, a place where one can pause to honor the past and contemplate the cost of freedom. For anyone visiting the Parliament buildings or exploring Ottawa, the National War Memorial is an absolute must-visit destination. It not only offers a stunning visual spectacle but also serves as a poignant reminder of the nation's history and the tremendous sacrifices made by its brave men and women. It is a place that encourages reflection, deepens understanding, and fosters a sense of gratitude for the freedoms we enjoy today. In conclusion, the National War Memorial in Ottawa is a place of great significance and beauty. Its solemnity, combined with its striking design, makes it a powerful reminder of Canada's military history. A visit to this memorial is an opportunity to pay tribute to those who fought and remember the profound impact of their sacrifices.

The National War Memorial is an iconic monument of Ottawa. It has a huge historical significance and importance. Continuously reminds us of the pain and the agony experienced by the Canadian citizens during the World Wars. And the sacrifices made by the brave sons of this soil.

Very beautiful place to visit! We were there at night and everything is lit up very nicely! Very clean and tidy! I’ve always wanted to go here on Nov 11 for the ceremony! This has such a nice view down Elgin street and the opposite when looking from Elgin. Very cool place to visit. It wasn’t busy at night at all! Pay your respects!

An extremely moving ,emotional place..a masterpiece paying tribute to the ultimate sacrifice made by Canadians to keep our great country free for all.Watching the changing of the guard was inspiring.Again Canada shows other countries how to honour our countrymen, past, present and future. However it was sad to see people climbing the monument to get a picture,it seems respect has become another thing that a generation is no longer taught.

The national war memorial is located at the center of the road. A great tourist attraction for people who are visiting Parliament of Canada, Rideau Canal for a visit in downtown. It’s free, ceremony is conducted where the guards walk past the memorial, you would be lucky if you get a chance to look at the same. The war memorial depicts the history of Canadian soldiers who fought in different wars and their name are engraved here. A site worth visiting if you love history and want to learn more about the same.

Absolutely beautiful memorial, a solemn place but so well done and thoughtful. You can watch the traditional changing of the guard here if you come at the right times. Would highly recommend visiting this place at least once if you're interested in history and especially so if you may have lost a loved one in any of the wars our country has been involved in. Many think this memorial is just about WWI/WWII but it is for every Canadian that has lost their life serving our country.

The National War Memorial, titled The Response is a tall, granite memorial Arch with accreted bronze sculptures in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, designed by Vernon March and first dedicated by King George VI in 1939. Originally built to commemorate the Canadians who died in the First World War, it was in 1982 rededicated to also include those killed in the Second World War and Korean War and again in 2014 to add the dead from the Second Boer War and War in Afghanistan, as well as all Canadians killed in all conflicts past and future. It now serves as the pre-eminent war memorial of 76 cenotaphs in Canada. In 2000, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was added in front of the memorial and symbolizes the sacrifices made by all Canadians who have died or may yet die for their country.

I noticed the benches all over the place where you can sit around after the long walks, and enjoy something to drink or snacks while looking around. It's nice here. Watch the people go by and wait a bit to see some Lambos and riders go by. Rental scooters are also everywhere. Reading the little things by the statues are interesting.

The National War Memorial is at Confederation Square in Canada's capital, Ottawa, nearby the Parliament building. The memorial is home to the Unknown Soldier and guards switch off shift every hour. The National War Memorial is a beautiful tribute to those Canadians who have fought and sacrificed so much.

Incredible accounting of Canada's military history. As an American, I saw many similarities in military traditions and principles of why nations fight. The difference in national struggles of a growing northern neighbor helped me understand the Canadians much better.

I have always wanted to visit this place, and got my chance a few days ago. Even through the piles of snow Ottawa recieved, this place is kept clean. The sky opened up and I got sunshine for a few brief moments and wow, the monument looks so stunning. A truly peaceful and refractive time, and very meaningful tribute to all whom have given this country their all. Take a moment to pause and reflect if you ever get a chance to visit. It's a very peaceful place, even though it is in the middle of downtown. Just a magnificent, personal experience.

This area is beautifully landscaped and underutilized as a community space because the cops come by every 30 min and kick out any non-white people who are hanging around. It's a great place to stop and sit and is surprisingly quiet for being in the middle of 4 roads. Acab, let this space be the community resting space it was meant to be!

Very interesting museum, full of fascinating information. Only downside was the staff. Without warning we were rushed out at closing time, we weren't aware that it closed so early. Almost felt like we were being evacuated because of an issue in the museum. Also overheard staff complaining about visitors. While walking out a line of staff came towards us with absolutely no intention of moving out of our way. No way to treat visitors to this amazing museum. We were there for nearly 4 hours and didn't have the chance to see it all

I was there man. Beautiful landmark man. Came off the plain from B.C moved here back in 2015 deciding to myself I needed to do my meetings downtown, I'll decided to take a walk man. Next thing I knew man was I got off this red and white bus man walked two blocks to parliament got there man and they had it all closed off. Not much for new or going anywhere without my tuns bumping into my ear holes. I didn't put all this panic into logic I just continued with my day. Walking up to parliament I got hit with police tape "do not cross" and police ready to pounce me. Little did I know some looney went off his rocker and tried to shoot up the parliament building, sniped some poor chap watching over this statue. Needless to say they don't have people watch the statue any longer. It's beautiful regardless. 😍

Interesting and thought provoking place. Statue is quite amazing really, it brings home the emotion in remembered those who lost their Lives in the world wars. Definately worth a visit if you are in the centre of Ottawa.

Good to see them back, and with added security. The troops off duty were happy to engage in brief conversation. Nice people. Also had a long chat with the tenting community behind. A good, calm debate. You may not agree with their views but they have every right to be there and made some interesting points. Be nice!! Peace out.

The National War Memorial pays respect to over 2,300,000 men and women who fought/ fight for Canadian values. This memorial stands proudly facing Canada's Parliament Buildings on Eligin street. It is the centre of activity each November 11th where Canadians remember our armed forces. Remembrance day commemorates the date when the armistice agreement was signed ending World War I. The cenotaph includes many meanings from the archway of troops entering and leaving the battlefields to the wreaths and poppies laid in respect for the fallen. Over 118,000 Canadians have paid this ultimate sacrifice and we have our freedom because of their commitment. On October 22, 2014, this was the site where cpl Nathan Cirillo was murdered by a coward who shot him in the back. Cpl Cirillo was standing as an honor guard at the memorial while holding a special rifle that is designed to not fire bullets. The coward was eventually gunned down in the hallways of the parliament buildings. If you like my reviews, photos or videos please give them a thumbs up. Or even better, thank someone from our armed forces foŕ their service

  • 5/5 Eli D. 3 years ago on Google
This is a really nice memorial. On remembrance day, they do a big service which is quite moving to attend. On other days you can walk right up and pay your respects at the tomb of the unknown soldier.
