Must visit place when in Goa. It's a sacred church dedicated to Baby Jesus. And it's a UNESCO World Heritage site which has a great importance due to it's rich history. This is one of the oldest churches in Goa constructed way back in 1605. The architecture is amazing and makes a good backdrop for some awesome insta worthy pics. Would suggest to read the history before going in. Also don't miss to see the body of St. Francis Xavier which is kept in a well decorated casket. Ask someone around for the location of the body. Would recommend anyone to pay a visit to Old Goa or Velha Goa. Don't forget to explore the other churches and buildings around the area.

It is one of the many tourists attractions in Goa. Mostly famous for the viewing of Saint Francis Xavier once every 10 years.

Brief About: The body of Francis Xavier was first taken to Portuguese Malacca and two years later shipped back to Goa. It is said that the saint's body was as fresh as the day it was buried. The remains of the saint still attract a huge number of tourists (Christian and non-Christian alike) from all over the world, especially during the public viewing of his body every ten years (last held in 2014). The saint is said to have miraculous powers of healing.

The floor is of marble laid with precious stones. Apart from the elaborate gilded altars, the interior of the church is simple. The church also holds paintings of scenes taken from the life of St. Francis Xavier. The mausoleum, on the top of which is placed the silver casket with the body of St. Francis Xavier can be seen everyday. It is said that the saint's body was as fresh as the day it was buried. Solemn exhibitions of the 'body' are held every ten years.

Relics of St. Francis Xavier, Goa: A profound spiritual experience. The venerated relics of the patron saint evoke a sense of awe and reverence. The beautifully adorned basilica showcases the rich Christian heritage of Goa. A pilgrimage destination that leaves a lasting impression.

A Holy place turned into a mechanical affair or experience by seeing security guards supervising the place for ensuring the most decent worshippers don't indulge in vandalism - is this warranted???

The place is disabled unfriendly in most places. It is very difficult to move anyone on wheelchairs within the church. Further, the guides, if their services are not employed, are extremely rude and curt. They would be standing within the church. Also, they can be seen ticking off tourists if they take a wrong turn. So, they can be easily mistaken to be the church staff. If asked a simple question, their reply is, "You don't want to hire us then why are you asking?". I saw it happening to another tourist. If these guides are not church staff, why should they be standing in the church without any tourists/ clients? It is sad to see their behaviour in this place of God. Hope the church authorities do something about these guides and also make the church premises disabled friendly.

I would give the church a 5 star rating, but the staff and people handling the church I would give them no rating at all. Very rude and horrendous behaviour. I couldn't believe what I was experiencing. Me being a catholic myself, was ashamed of the behaviour of the staff at church. In fact I was accompanied by two of my office colleagues. And we were visiting from Pune and everyone had heard very highly of this church, so we decided to visit this. But to my disappointment, despite showing up on Google that the church closes at 6 PM, the church was shut before 5 PM. And it was raining heavily. When asked one of the staff members, what time does the church close. He had no answer to give. But justified by saying, come in the morning, church opens very early on the morning. So I politely asked him twice, so what time do you close, and he said there is no fixed time. We close when we want. So I told him, that Google has wrong information updated then. But he continued to be rude. Also, the experience of the book store lady , was very disappointing. She was closing and so was unhappy to make any sale. I just wanted to buy rosaries and she was also very rude and harsh. But I needed my rosary so I got it and left. But overall a very sad experience.
