The worst experience I have ever had in a hospital. The people working the ER called security to force people out fur to them being upset for sitting here for hours. From injuries to Covid there was no compassion for anyone here. The staff behind the glass laughing while people are yelling in pain. Security is three deep trying to intimidated patients. The RN is walking around telling people it will be another 3 to four hours before being seen and most including me have been her for 3 or more hours already. Then they all go to the back as you say they are mad at us for being here. Enough is enough DO NOT COME TO THIS ER FOR AM REASON.

The reviews didnt match my experience at this hospital. I was treated w respect, cared for and dare i say, talked to like a human. Jokes aside, they really did take care of me. Didn't belittle, devalue or take away from my visibly valid pain. Ty to the entire staff that night.

Blood on the floor. Actual blood. Told staff and was told that she was “aware” that is was there and that she cleaned the bed sheets but left that there so EMT could see that they didn’t properly do their job. Understandable that she wanted someone to know they aren’t working up to expectations, but why service that room until it was properly cleaned. And lets not forget to mention i registered at 4pm and didnt leave until 11:30 pm. Never visiting this hospital again. ESPECIALLY not on my death bed

This is the worst hospital on my life! My father passed away and we are still waiting over a week for a death certificate! Really making me think they didn’t even try to save him when he was living! Everytime we call them the receptionist send us the a automatic teller knowing that it’s gonna hang up! They’re very inconsiderate and unprofessional! If I could give this hospital less than a star I would! If you or a family member on the verge of death please avoid this hospital at all cost! If anything they’ll kill you! I wish I could report this hospital as a whole! It needs to be shut down immediately!

Unfortunately 1 Star is as low as I can rate. My husband and I came to the ER as our daughter was brought here. The nurses were off putting. We asked for ice water for our daughter and the nurse would not listen to the entire conversation. She cut my daughter off as she was trying to tell her that they had given her water before but someone threw it out. The room was extremely hot. There was no air conditioning at all however I did notice fans blowing at the nurses stations. The nurse refused to allow us a chair to sit as we stood there sweating. However, what really concerned me was the posted signs that read there are no public restrooms. There were literally people sitting in the waiting room for hours in the heat waiting to learn the fate of their loved ones and being told there is no restroom for them to use. It is perplexing to me that an emergency room would deny visitors access to a restroom. I truly don’t understand how this is allowed to happen.

If I could give 0 stars, I would! This is the worst hospital ever!! My husband was admitted here because it was the closest hospital to his job, and they are denying for him to transfer. I don't know what to do. The nurses don't know anything, and DR. Hagu does not respond to my calls. My husband is about to be there for a week, and they aren't Approving his transfer. I'm scared because he is not improving, and the nurses there ignore their patients.

During my three-year employment at the hospital, I noticed that the nurse-patient ratio was poor, which affected the quality of care. Moreover, there was no clinical ladder leadership for RNs who had advanced their education. I was being paid $36.00/hour, which is 13% below the average for RNs with 23 years of experience. I brought this up to the attention of the Chief of Nursing, Nursing Director, Payroll, and Human Resources, but unfortunately, no one advocated for me. The Director of Nursing's response was intentionally discriminatory, saying that I had signed the acceptance letter. If this were at another hospital, I would have received the benefits and regulations policy that I deserved. It's just not fair.

This is a TERRIBLE hospital, they will have you sitting in the waiting room for hours (currently 5 hours in the hospital waiting room) even when it’s “slow” the staff doesn’t care how long you wait and will tell you that you’re next even after an hour of being told the same thing. Even the “security” is a joke! The female guard came in with an attitude and cussed out a patient for disrespecting her but she was louder than him. Most of the patients really just want somewhere to sleep, not treatment. It’s a disorganized system!!!

My husband Joseph Barrett was brought here via ambulance due to some other hospital codes. Prior to my husband’s arrival to this nasty looking, nasty staff and physician we were always warmed not to come to this hospital at all. Today we had no choice and hoped that the rumors were not true. However, every negative comments heard were absolutely true and more. My husband came by ambulance with fainting and losing consciousness, pain radiating from his back to the front, nausea, pain to urinate and a couple of other complaints. Once they let me come back there; I was advised that the staff had promised him something for pain and nausea and he never got it. Someone claiming to be a patient advocate administered him medication for nausea and pain; after I complained. Many hours after he had arrived. My husband is the most valuable person in my life! It was hard to see how the medical staff treated him. By the same we treated I’m submitting this review to the proper authorities; so no else is treated like we were. Signed: Totally dissatisfied with UMC Southern Hospital service in total. Thank God that my husband wasn’t worse than it was, because he would have died there!

If I could give this hospital zero stars I would. it’s is so sad that this is the hospital serving our Ward 8 residents. No one deserves the awful treatment that is given in this place, it’s embarrassing to call this a hospital. My mother was admitted here for a week and was humiliated and disrespected by the nurses here. I witnessed first hand while On FaceTime with mom , nurse Martina shouting at my mother who just needed help walking after a major abdominal surgery, she raised my mothers blood pressure while my mom already had difficulty breathing. The patient in the same room told the nurse to lower her voice and that it’s not okay to yell at my mom. On another occasion, Numerous times my mom pressed the nurse call button for help because her oxygen was so low and no one came. I had to literally call the hospital at 1 am to get someone to go to my moms room and help her. There is so much more I cannot fit in this review but our family will be making a formal report on the following nurses with the worst bedside manor I’ve ever seen: Linda Briscoe, Nurse Martina, Nurse Diana. Disgusting hospital!!!

Sat in the waiting room with my husband for 4 hours. Once he was called they wouldn’t even let me in the back with him. Folks in the lobby drinking beer, cussing and rolling blunts and walking around with cigarettes in their mouth. Front desk lady gives inaccurate wait list times and placements and is rude. Not very good customer service. The only nice part was the one nurse who tied a sheet to sling my husbands arm as she could she just visible pain! So thank you ma’am! However, I feel like this is more of a homeless shelter than emergency room.

This is the most ghetto, disgustingly slow non prioritizing HOSPITAL that I have ever seen! I got into a car accident and was never called to the back after I waited 3 hours! Imagine coming into the ER Dazed, bruised and in pain from a CAR ACCIDENT and noooooo one seems to care? Not the nurses, not the security, definitely not the Doctors either. They should close the POS down! I was better off letting a crack head evaluate me in a dirty Motel room than waste my time on this pathetic dump! Seriously this place needs to be torn down.

Mixed review: The staff - 10/10. Every person I interacted with was good, from the nurses, to the PA, to the security staff. Honestly, they were good. Triage - 0/10. I came in on a stretcher from an ambulance with a broken bone and I was sat in the waiting room, which I don't understand. Later on, I found out that I was not fast tracked. But guess who they did fast track? A man who felt like his blood pressure was too high, a woman with low potassium, and a woman with an abnormal period. I'm literally sitting here with a broken bone and covered in scratches, and all of those people turned out to be fine so I felt like something with triage went very wrong. Likewise, there was a big fight in the waiting room and they just let it go on. My room - 0/10. I was not given a room with a bed but rather put in a chair. Meanwhile, ole dude with the slightly high blood pressure was given a medical suite. When I asked to be moved to a room with a bed, cause you know, I had a broken foot that needed to be elevated, the nurse acted like I asked for the blood of her first born child. I said, well can I at least get a blanket, she said fine. Overall rating - 5/10. There is major room to improve the experience here. I think they need to aggressively improve their triage and their waiting room, and focus intensely on how to prioritize which patients go where. Other than that, the staff there was clearly highly competent, and clearly very well-trained in their field. They were also very nice, I just don't see why I was put in the waiting room after I came in off an ambulance. I would recommend going to another hospital if your injuries are severe because you may end up getting misprioritized during triage.

My father died here coming from Bridgepoint National Harbor (a joke in itself). WHY they would send their patients here I’ll never comprehend! I spent 12 days begging for his body to be released from this roach motel but Dr. MoMoh was MIA. The medical examiner called ME asking for a rundown because the doctor was no where to be found. I finally tracked him down in his fancy Maryland office to remind him of his obligations at UMC. The people of SE deserve so much better than this!!! This was in January 2021 and I am just getting the energy to write this because I know none of you really care and it won’t change until someone?? intervenes. So please save your generic “sorry for your experience” comment. You’re not sorry and I’ll advocate for better treatment in these funding-starved areas every change I get. Pathetic. Disgusted. So sad!!

The expectation for staff is, truly, unrealistic. They expect their nurses to be both nurse and tech. There isn't enough staff....PERIOD! As an agency nurse they did not even want to give me 2 orientation days prior to me starting on the Telemetry unit. That does not enforce patient safety...at all. Please, if you really care for your loved ones, do not bring them to this hospital.

Worse experience ever. I was helping my disabled mom and was worried I tore my rotator cuff in my should. I arrived to the ER at 2pm and waited for 5hrs and was never called. I was in so much pain, but I was as patient as I could be. I went to the window to ask how many people were in front of me and the lady said she didnt know and she couldn't help me. But i witnessed another patient who had been waiting ask someone else the same question and they went to check for her and came back with a answer. Then A fight broke out with another patient and security over how long she had been waiting. It was a complete mess. I left without being seen and im currently on my way to be seen at my own Dr's Office. This place is a mess, I wouldn't recommend this ER to anyone.

Absolutely the worst hospital in the District of Columbia. I really wish someone do something about the employees that work here. They have no care for the patients that come to the Emergency room. I'm not sure how the rest of the hospital is ran, but this right here I'd redundant. People who work with other people always need to show customer service. That's a skill this hospital don't have.

This hospital has gotten worse every year. I heard that they are planning to tear it down and rebuild. So it's clear none of the staff cares. What put the nail in the coffin is last year my fiance went into labor. Now they aren't a labor hospital anymore. Then today at in the ER we were told that the computer systems are down for maintenance and won't be back up until 5. It was 2am when they said this.

I wish I could give no stars. This is the worst hospital in all of the DMV! I went in for a sickle cell crisis and they left me screaming in the ER telling me that they don’t give out the medicine I am requesting as it’s the only medicine that helps. After hours of screaming in agonizing pain the nurse comes back with the medicine I requested in the first place. Put me through all that pain just to still give it to me in the end. I was poked 4 times before the nurse actually got a proper IV in but by that time I had the medicine via IM instead of IV. Needless to say the IV was absolutely pointless as I was discharged after getting the medicine IM. My mother also called the hospital to ask what was happening with me and the nurse that answered the phone said she didn’t know where I was, my mother told her to follow the screams because she could hear me crying in the background. I have a horrible experience every time I’ve ever come to this hospital. DO NOT GO HERE! The doctors are careless!

I'm very disgusted with the lack of professionalism, patience, and care that your operator Keisha Brown displayed today over a brief phone exchange. I’m pregnant and I live in the area so I was calling to see if I could get prenatal care from UMC but when I called before listening to what I was calling for Ms. Brown instantly places me on old without seeing what I wanted or where I needed to be transferred to. I sat on hold for a few minutes then hung up and called back asking for the operator’s name. The name she gave me was Keisha Brown I asked why did she just put me on hold like that without seeing what I needed first and her response was “I’m the operator, you want emergency room right?” I informed her that I didn’t and if she just took the time to listen to what information I needed she might’ve been able to actually help me. Long story short Ms. Brown claimed she didn’t know anything about UMC having an OBGYN and she had no information or phone number for me to find out. I understand the medical industry is busy but I feel like when dealing with people in person or over the phone the common curtesy of hearing them out should go unspoken. Please train your staff. This is the 3rd negative encounter I’ve had with your staff this month. The first time I encountered a rude female security guard and the second was a flirty male security guard. PLEASE UMC DO BETTER WITH YOUR STAFF.

When I was told that the ambulance was taking me to this horrible hospital, I wanted to stay home. Nevertheless, I went and was glad that I did. The ER doctor literally saved my life. He caught something that no other doctor had thought to look for. He called for an ambulance and had me sent to MedStar Washington Hospital Center. They stabilized me and within 24hrs, I received life-saving surgery. I feel like my old self again.

I don't understand why there are no visiting hours at this time. It makes no sense if DC is open Schools office restaurants and other hospitals why is this hospital enforcing no visitors due to COVID-19 which is what family out of state is being told. It does not look good the website regarding visitors has not been updated since March 2020. So confusing.

United Medical Center seems to be a good hospital with competent staff. My brother-in-law was transferred there June 26 from BridgePoint National Harbor. He was non-responsive, so they called 911 to take him to the emergency room in the middle of the night. There he was treated by Dr. Marisa Dowling and a nurse named Mike. They discovered that my brother-in-law’s catheter was plugged, resulting eventually in a urinary tract infection and septic shock. The emergency room staff was able to stabilize him and he was admitted to the ICU. The ICU doctors were accessible and willing to talk to us. We received phone calls from either Dr. Shanmugam, Dr. Beyene or Dr. Yacoub every day to let us know what my brother-in-law’s condition was. We even saw Dr. Yacoub twice in my brother-in-law’s room when we were visiting. We also were helped by Angela Dorsey, a case manager there. On July 3, Kaiser Permanente transferred my brother-in-law to Holy Cross Hospital for further recovery.

They need to shut this hospital down completely. My fiance arrived here at 11:00 am this morning with a sprin foot and he is just seeing a doctor at 8:45pm tonight on top of being denied a simple Tylenol after all those hours of sitting. All the ER nurses need to be fired including the charge nurse, the whole department is rude, nasty and disrespectful with no human regard for people who comes there

They have no signs in the lobby about not being on the phone or recording which I wasn't. They pointed me out surrounded me when I'm coming to the hospital for help not harassment

The review has one star for the lady at the front in the emergency department “jaquita” was rude and didn’t care for any of the patients, she also actually scolded me loudly in front of everyone. Hannah, Loki and a shorter blonde lady were amazing and made me feel so much better. I cannot be more thankful for them. If anyone I loved was hurt or having any issues I would want them to run into any of those 3 angels!

I came in around 2 and was seen very quickly! I was taken through Triage and had the best nurse. My nurse was Caitlin Orwig!! When she first addressed me, she was very patient with me!! She was kind, respectful, gentle and actually listened to better help me. When I was in a lot of pain 12- out of 10! She was attentive and took her time but quick enough with my IV. Overall, Caitlin Orwig is the best nurse there! She's 5 🌟's

I called to ask a question about a fall, the operator acted as if he does not want to be there, triage or nursing supervisor would not answer the phone and the in person in the ED that answered the phone use words on the phone like she had no type of education or correct grammar skills at all. FYI if you want to make a complaint ALWAYS contact the patient relations and the CEO (hospitals have morning meetings and complaints are talked about also) If their scores keep looking like this then they need an audit done. Call the state board to back you up also.

This hospital really should be shut down. Every time I come it's a horrible experience, it's at least a 4 or 5 hour wait just to make it to the back. Once you get to the back you wait another 4 or 5 hours. Lord knows if your in pain that's a long time to be waiting. Unfortunately its the only one really in my area. I'm currently still sitting in the lobby at 7:45pm and I've been here since 4:00pm. I'm never coming here again.

Explained to the security guard that I just called a hour ago, and was told visiting was until 6:30pm other people were trying to visit also asked for a supervisor no one ever came to explain anything. Also my father needs to go to rehab, was looking for a good one and was told by Yvette that she has chosen One,

I am not, and hopefully never will be a patient of this facility, but from our telephone interaction alone, I sincerely hope their medicinal practices are better than their communication and people skills. I contacted them concerning a matter of falsified documents from a university and was treated extremely rudely and disrespectfully. Judging by my experiences and the repeated extremely negative reviews, I would stay as far from here as possible unless you are in absolute need.

I’ve only dealt with them on the phone, so far. However it is a clear indication of how the place is run. I was calling to check on a family member who is paralyzed from the neck down. From the operator to the charge nurse in neurology…rude and abrupt! The operator didn’t even say hold on, just a moment or anything. I initially thought the line was disconnected until I heard the music. I was clear that I didn’t know exactly where to call, yet they seemed annoyed that I had no clue, despite explaining the situation! I don’t care what they deal with daily or where they come from, lack of customer service and respect are disgusting!

I was pleasantly surprised at the professional service my elderly father received in the Emergency Department for abdominal pain. The facilities seems like it could use some TLC, but I don't understand the bad reviews. Yes, the ER will take a long time wherever you go. My father arrived at 1:30 in the afternoon and we left at 9:30 in the evening. But in that time he got lab work and a CT scan, so that amount of time was what I expected. It's a public hospital in the poor part of the city, so I wasn't surprised when a male patient was belligerent and threatening the staff, but they seemed to take it stride.

I went to the emergency room there and This is by far the worst hospital ever! I went in at 12 and was there until 4:30. They claim they called my name three times and then they told me I would have to start all over because they cleared me out the system. They claim she called me three times but I guess I didn't hear cuz I was sleep. I was only sleep for like 30 mins at the most. They had patients in there crying, ppl was sleeping on the floor. The staff is so nonchalant about everything and not compassionate to say the least. Security was escorted ppl out the hospital but they coudon't have someone wake me up when my name was called. The tall man at the front desk was very unsympathetic, he told me I was knocked out and I'm like I've been waiting since 12AM & it's now 4:30AM! It was ppl that came in after me that was seen before me. I WILL NEVER COME BACK TO THIS HOSPITAL AGAIN AND IF ANYBODY KNEW BETTER THEY WOULDNT EITHER! This hospital needs to get shut down or hire a WHOLE NEW STAFF!

Today on 02/18/2024 approximately time was 8:45am Physician SUHR, UNSUN PA-C and the other medical staff that work along with her were very unprofessional in providing care to patients. A lot of HIPAA violations happen discussing from this doctor, patient diagnosis and Information and going back-and-forth in conversation with patients including myself about why did I visit the ER like I am in pain and a doctor told me to do so!! my witness was present along with me during their visit at the emergency room. This is unacceptable I’ve recommend you all not go to this ER. My witness also was discriminated against . We knew why other patients were there for and what they need to be treated for and I heard the doctor debating with the patient about their care. Please don’t take yourself or love ones .I will never visit again.

Dr. Balhara is an exceptional, caring and patient doctor. He has very strong and clear communication skills. Most importantly, he built a strong trusting relationship with my son who received great care and attention. His guidance and advice were priceless guiding me towards his next steps to a full recovery. Multiple times a day he provided status helping us through very sad days. We need more outstanding doctors like Dr. Balhara!!

Kendrick in Procurement was very inappropriate with patients when delivering products to the floors and with the way he manages his staff. He is also in collusion with the Head of Security on bringing in "vendors" AKA friends or his family and taking money off the top with a good ole DC kick back. Where are our tax dollars going? Hate this hospital and everything associated with it! Too bad Trumps people didn't Storm this place instead of the Captial. So low budget and patient care always comes last. Avoid at all costs!!!!! If I was dying, I would risk living to be taken to another hospital. Like monopoly DO NOT PASS GO OR COLLECT THAT STD FROM THEM NOT CLEANING ISH.

Is this a Hospital or a Prison? Can’t visit my sick grandmother till 1 p.m. then have to leave by 6 p.m. the staff have been ok I’m sure it’s not their fault, but whoever makes the rules for this Hospital probably has some type of complex,

Got a bill from this place when I live in Texas and have never been here. I’ve called a dozen times, left several messages and have gotten no response. Guess they don’t verify information or they are running an insurance scam. Never left a review for somewhere I’ve never been but here we are.

I was on town for an event over the weekend and became ill on the way. I was taken here for care and I must say the nurses, providers and front desk staff were all very attentive. This was the best care I have ever received in an ER setting! Thank you for all you do!!

Wow seen the letter on social media posted by employees! Umc thinks their nurses are entitled and adding mandatory overtime. Shame on this hospital for treating the backbone of the health care system like that. The cno should be fired for even writing it!

Got a Covid test on DECEMBER 26. 2021. Was told in the ER by my tech (she's an older white lady, really really nice) that I would get a call for my results in 3-4 hours. Today JANUARY 6,2022 I have not gotten a call with my results. I have went up there, called, and left SEVERAL messages with no response or anything. That's beyond insane being as that we're in a pandemic that they're giving Covid tests and saying eff giving ppl their results.

😠 I used to come here all the time and the service used to be great! Now you sit in the waiting room for mad hours. The triage nurse shows no empathy and sympathy for the patients that are as true and dying pain. I sat here tonight and watch how a guy came in mad jokes and all fist let me mention he c...

😠 I wouldn’t suggest this hospital for young inexperienced first time black moms. I’m 28 and I was told this was a decent hospital however I was given poor care by the staff here. It was one point for 3 months I wasn’t seen by my doctor and was only getting ultrasounds monthly. I didn’t know any bette...

😠 Don’t let these people lie to you this by far the worst hospital ever! Back in the day it was okay but I don’t know what happened over the years. I’ve watched my sister have the worst labor and delivery. The doctors was unprofessional they even had students practice on the patients. They barely clea...

😠 Due to all the great reviews I decided to send my mom to this rehab after her pedestrian crash. I whole heartedly regret sending her here. It was by far the worst experience we have ever had. The doctors were horrible and definitely medically neglected her. The nurses are so rude and don’t even want...

😠 Understaffed, stressful, and very dirty ER. I don’t think I’ve ever been to a hospital where I’ve feared so much at the idea of getting a staff infection. It is truly a filthy environment and I’m pretty sure it fail to meet the standards in which hospital’s cleanliness should be governed. It’s obv...
