I writing this review after visiting this place on 19th January 2021 First of all it's pleasure to be there, because it's a huge area surrounded by thousand of trees and home of too many birds species, and that atmosphere can automatically heels your mind. It opens six days (Tuesday to Sunday) , 👁Monday closed👁) in a week . And the visiting time is between 09:00 am to 04:00 pm. But, the ticket counter is closed at 03:00 pm. So ,i recommended all of you to please visit this place as soon as opening(like 09:00 am),otherwise you may not be able to cover the full area. And the ticket price is =10 Rs (for Indians) and 30 Rs(for foreigners ) .And they charge extra 20Rs for still photography(from Camera) Try to Carry some food items(without plastic) and water before getting enter. And Keep this place clean . Thank you I hope it will be helpful for you.

Nice & quite place. But lot of distance to walk, avoid with small and aged people. Govt must provide polo carts and guides for better understanding of the plants & species. Tip: if you are more interested to have a look at the banyan tree, use the gate number 2. From gate 1, the distance is too much.

Most Famous for The Great Banyan Tree, which boasts of having the largest canopy in the world. This gardens are popularly known as Calcutta Botanic Gardens too. This is originally founded in 1786 by Colonel Kyd, containing about 12,000 living plants and over two and half million dried plant specimens in herbarium collected from all over the world. This is the oldest of all the botanical gardens in India. It remains open from Sunrise to Sunset. This ethereal ambience is ideal for fun, frolics and fiesta. There is a Serpentine Lake where one can enjoy boating too!

Good ambience for quiet time and feels really good once alone. It was really nice to be there with a good rain. New Bhool bhuliya is good represntation of forest in compact manner .Overall nice experience. A bit can be done on maintenance part (understandable due to monsoon). Rest everything is fine and a day is enough if you really love the nature.

Great experience for kids. Great collection of plants. We could not cover the whole area in one day, the nature trail was great. Prepare for lots of walking, a good shoe will perhaps help.

How to reach: Barasat B.Garden bus from Ballygunge. Buses available from Dharmatala, Exide etc. I liked the place. Entry fee: ₹ 10/- Opens at 9 am. Closes at 3.30 pm (after lockdown schedule) Camera allowed with nominal charges (as I can remember is ₹ 30/-) Various flora and fauna are available here. However the birds and animals are not very easy to find out. There is no facility for food or drinking water. One should carry adequate food and water. However You will find small food vendors outside the gate. The only thing you will get here in abundance is Oxygen. No public transport for visiting inside the premises available after lockdown. (I visited on 30th January 2021) Try to avoid plastic carry bags. Please hit the like button if you like the review.

It's the paradise for tree lovers. Different rare species of trees are right here. This place is very Idea for students who wants to know more about plants. This is also a great place for family gathering and outing. It's a huge place so you need time in your hands. But this place needs much more care and cleaning. Overall this is my one of favourite places for winter outing.

A large and well-maintained park. They check the bags at entry for any plastic bags which are not allowed. There are many large trees which have obviously quite old. We visited on a Sunday morning, and there was no rush. It was January, so it was cold and foggy. But, we still got to see some flowers in bloom. We saw some of the wildlife, including birds (many mynas) and squirrels. The paved roads were clean and comfortable to walk on. Most of the trees we saw were palms. There is an area with lots of Banyan trees. They also have small flower exhibits with roses, as well as a vegetable garden. The area outside the garden, however, is a crowded mess. Difficult to access the garden from outside on the very busy and noisy streets. We had to wait approx. 25 min for our Uber to arrive to pick us up from the garden. This is something to note when visiting this place and using taxis.

A very beautiful and silent place besides river Ganga. You can find peace of mind. You must spend 3 to 4 hours to visit all the places. It has best views from rain to winter when many plants grows but also in summer I found the place worthy to visit. A beauty of nature between all the concretes. The place opens for visiting at 8 am and closes at 5:30pm(ticket counter close at 4:30 pm).

Absolutely amazing and fascinating! A mini-forest in the jungle of buildings. A must visit for everyone. We couldn't complete the whole area in one day, and hope to return again. Each season decorates the flora in its own way, which means that the garden is suitable for visiting in any and every season. The Garden is a large one, and it is very easy to get lost without guidance. Maps have been put up at several places. It is advisable to take photo of one such map, and then plan the route accordingly. Carry a lot of drinking water with you, as you will surely feel thirsty after walking such a long distance. There is supposed to be a canteen somewhere inside, though we couldn't locate it. Also carry some dry food that will help in maintaining energy level. Washrooms are available throughout the garden.

A beautiful and huge garden. It has the Asia's oldest banyan tree. The breath of the tree is enormous. The garden is maintained by the government. There are entry tickets. The guards create a problem if you go for pre wedding or couple shoots. One can carry cameras for clicking nature only. There are fees for cameras. No video shooting allowed.

It is a good place to roam around the nature and to spend a time by keeping yourself out of the daily chaos. The most important attraction is the The Great Banyan Tree which is approximately older than 200 years. Few things to keep in mind: â€ĸ Plastic Bags, Plastic Disposable Bottles and Plastic Disposable Tiffin Boxes are not allowed. If you have anything like this, then you can keep them in a room (Opposite of the Ticket Counter) outside the entrance but it is completely at your own risk. â€ĸ Washrooms are too dirty. Ticket Price: 10/- per head

(Translated by Google) Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Botanical Garden (formerly Indian Botanical Garden) A historical botanical garden located at Shivpur, Howrah, near Kolkata. The 263-acre park currently has about 17,000 trees of a total of 1,400 species. This garden is also known as Shibpur Botanical Garden. The park was established in 16 by Colonel Robert Kidd, an army officer of the British East India Company. The purpose of establishing the garden was to collect plants from different countries for commercial purposes and to test them. For this purpose the park was established by purchasing some wetlands on the west bank of the Hooghly River near Calcutta. The garden was popularly known as the company's garden because it was built by East India Company employees. Robert Kidd was the honorary superintendent of the Botanical Gardens from 18 to 1793. In 1893, when the botanist William Roxburgh became the superintendent of the garden, a major change was made in the policy making of the garden. Roxburgh bought a variety of trees from all over India and built a large herbarium in the garden. This collection of 2,500,000 dry trees is now known as the Central National Herbarium under the Botanical Survey of India. The area of the main garden was 300 acres. Shortly after its establishment, 26 acres of land were donated to establish a Christian college. This college is now known as Bengal Engineering and Science University. Queen Victoria of England is said to have been interested in the park in the 19th century. At that time the name of this garden was Royal Indian Botanical Garden. After independence in 1973, the park was renamed the Indian Botanical Garden. The park was named Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Botanical Garden on June 25, 2009 on the occasion of the centenary of the birth of eminent scientist Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose. Since independence, the Botanical Gardens have been managed by the Botanical Survey of India under the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India. A 15-member board of directors regularly oversees the garden. Several representatives of the West Bengal government also regularly attend administrative meetings. At present, about 400 workers, including plant researchers, are employed in the park. The most notable object of the Botanical Garden is a 250-year-old banyan tree called the Mahabatavriksha. The circumference of the tree is 330 meters. This huge banyan tree existed on an acre and a half of land with hundreds of twigs. Even two big cyclones of 184 or 18 could not shake this banyan tree from its place. I have witnessed many natural disasters in my long life Yet he did not bow his head in front of anyone But the big tree in the botanical garden could not stand in front of Amphan anymore. In addition to this banyan tree, the Botanical Garden also had mahogany, sal, teak, bot, ashwattha, shimul, piyal and various species of palm trees. There are also cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, bay leaves, rubber and various medicinal plants. However, more than a thousand trees have been destroyed due to the impact of Amphan (Original) āĻ†āĻšāĻžāĻ°ā§āĻ¯ āĻœāĻ—āĻĻā§€āĻļāĻšāĻ¨ā§āĻĻā§āĻ° āĻŦāĻ¸ā§ āĻŦā§‹āĻŸāĻžāĻ¨āĻŋāĻ•ā§āĻ¯āĻžāĻ˛ Botanical Garden, a place for Nature lovers. Good place to watch undisturbed plants & trees. But, the density of the Garden has reduced & many logs are kept everywhere from trees which existed. Maybe they died, or it has been cut... Don't know. Still, a good place with no plastic allowance making the place real green & Unpolluted. The old Banyan tree is very well protected & it's growing new branches... I wish we had many botanical gardens all over the city for us to surrender to Mother Nature. Trees are God. They make us live. ❤

A must-visit destination for botanists and plants enthusiasts. I visited before I left India - though some of the facilities were closed then but the species of trees which were available to be viewed even after that, were fascinating. Could see and learn from a variety of species here (especially the Great Banyan Tree), clicked nice photos as well as played a bit of chess in silence. I have seen people take their bicycles to tour the place too but I am not sure if it is allowed.

A huge natural place in Howrah. You can breathe the fresh air and go for long walks to explore the garden. The garden has many huge waterbodies inside, and seating spaces near them. The Great Banyan tree and The great water Lily are the prime attractions.

Before deciding to go to this garden on a family outing (a small family of three - my wife, kid and I), I read some reviews which were not positive about the place. Reviews said that the place was a waste of time and, being very far from the city, not worth spending time there. Still, I took a chance and went over. And it turned out to be one of the most cherishing moments with my family. Both my wife and child enjoyed the serenity, greenery, the rare plants, trees and, oh not to forget the lotuses and Water Lillies. The garden has dedicated a portion of flaura from each state in India. Although we can't go near the main trunk of the world's biggest banyan tree, as it is protected with fence, we can still view its branches from very near and click pics. One part of the garden opens to the Hoogli river, which is a refreshing sight to behold. At end of our whole noon-to-evening walk around the garden-cum-park, instead of feeling tired, we were more fresh than we entered - the difference was thanks to the lovely plants and trees. Only regret (reason for 4-star, instead of 5-star): They have a kitchen garden near the staff quarters, with a big variety of vegetables in all unimaginable sizes. But, this is not maintained well. We also had difficulty in finding a clean washroom with running water, but I don't think that's the case with all the toilets within the park. So, that's ok. Now for some information for those who are planning to visit the place: 1. Don't visit the park if you don't have at least 3 hours in hand. 2. The ticket costs just Rs.10, which seems like a mere formality. This is for Indians. I guess it is Rs.100 for foreigners. 3. You need to pay for cameras, but mobile camera is not counted and is free to carry. 4. They will not allow you to carry plastic covers inside, such as polythene covers or that of Lays/Kurkure. You can take these chips inside, however, by going to the shop just outside the entrance, where the shop people will pack chips for you in a newspaper for a cost of Rs.3 😁 (I am talking about April 2022). 5. Visitors are allowed only until 5.00pm. After this, it is reserved for people who come from the locality for evening walk.

If you are a nature lover, its the best place for you.. One will get to see various types of tress here.. There's a wide variety of trees, plants, flowers etc. I visited the place in the month of October.. It was really hot and i didn't enjoy so much because of the heat.. One must visit during winter.. I went from my college, it was an educational trip.. And we walked 10 kms inside the garden.. It was too tiring. If you have walking problem, do not visit.. There's no place to sit, so must carry some papers to sit on. We visited the herbarium also..

The Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden commonly known as Botanical Garden is a well maintained nature park situated at Shibpur, Howrah. It is the heaven for the nature lovers, students, scientists and researchers related to plants and ecosystems. It is also a very good picnic spot. Very recently the Government has taken strict measures to keep this iconic place free of plastics and litters. Thumbs up to this attempt and hope it will be maintained forever.

This is a beautiful place. I loved it. There is so much greenery. There is not much to see, but a lot to feel and enjoy. One can also do small picnic type of thing here. The great banyan tree is not as much big as it looks in the picture and I thought it to be😀. The scenery and environment is a greater attraction than the banyan tree itself. Also we have to walk a lot, which I liked. The road is also shady so that is good. Carry a water bottle if possible, there are no shops inside the garden.

The botanical garden also known as Saheb Bagan among locals. The gardens were founded 234 years ago as Company Bagan in 1787 by Colonel Robert Kyd, an army officer of the East India Company. The Great Banyan Tree is the main attraction of the botanical garden. The tree is more than 250 years old and also 'Guinnees Book of World Records' holder for massive canopy. The primary fo purpose was identifying new plants of commercial value, such as teak, and growing spices for trade. The Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden, previously known as Indian Botanic Garden and the Calcutta Botanic Garden, is situated in Shibpur, Howrah near Kolkata. They are commonly known as the Calcutta Botanical Garden and previously as the Royal Botanic Garden, Calcutta. The gardens exhibit a wide variety of rare plants and a total collection of over 12,000 specimens spread over 109 hectares. It’s well known that the famous centuries old Banyan tree, one of the largest living plant in the world, is here. Definitely this is pride of Indian Botanical Garden, but beyond that there are so much to discover if you are interested enough to explore into the treasure of nature. Accumulation of thousands different plant species from around the world are continuing here since last two and half centuries with proper scientific care .Those oldies are now turned to hugest and perfectly harmonized themselves with the surrounding local flora and fauna, and their joint efforts made this area an unique bio-diversity pocket .Birds are hand full. Varieties of native and imported flowers blooms on their individual season. Numbers of Skippers and vivid butterflies hop flower to flower in search for nectar. Innumerable insects waiting under branches and leaves for photographs. From gigantic trunks to tiny shrubs, climber or aquatic life, everyone contribute their individual uniqueness to form adequate diversity on this hardly over 100 hectares area. Surrounded by clamorous city oneside and river Ganges in other, the green area are still there to provide some blissfulness in daily life of city-dweller.

I recently had the opportunity to explore the botanical garden, and I must say, the experience was quite enjoyable. The tranquil atmosphere and abundant greenery create a peaceful ambiance. However, it's worth noting that the battery-operated transport within the premises is currently out of service. As a result, if you intend to fully explore the area, be prepared to cover a distance of around 6 km on foot.

Best place for an early morning walk. Gates open at 5.30am. You have to get a pass for this. You can get the pass on Tuesday and Thursday. You need to bring one identity proof photocopy, 2 passport size photographs and 150rs INR. It's a great picnic spot in the winters with many schools organizing trips here. You can get different fauna and flora. The entry cost is 10rs for Indians. Charges for camera is also there. You can also opt for a cart service if you don't want to walk around and explore. The iconic banyan tree which is more than 300 years old is the centre of attraction. Good spot for Pokemon go players.

Great place. Nature's paradise and photographer's delight. But maintenance needs to be better. The directions are not visible. At least one cafeteria or arrangements for good drinking water is required to spend the whole day. Otherwise somebody at the entrance should advise to carry water from outside. Otherwise it's a beautiful place.

The Great Banyan tree is believed to be at least 250 years old, and has been referenced in many travel books, going back to at least the nineteenth century. Early travel writers found it to be noteworthy due to its large size and its unusually high number of prop-trunks. It has survived two great cyclones in 1864 and 1867, when some of its main branches were broken. With its large number of aerial roots, which grow from the branches and run vertically to the ground, The Great Banyan is said to appear more like a dense forest than as an individual tree.

Nice place with plenty of greenery around. You can spend time viewing serene view. View of the Great Banyan tree is awesome. However, maintenance of the park is not satisfactory. Sitting chairs are broken. Water bodies have not been cleaned. Parking is available near the gate noo.2, but charge is on higher side. You have to pay Rs.50/- for car parking irrespective of timing.

Indian Botanical Garden is located on one side of the great Hoogly river in Shibpur region in Howrah district. The connectivity is also good. You can reach Howrah station and then take a bus or an auto from the booking spot. It will be atleast 45 minutes journey because the roads are congested and little busy. Alternatively you can also use your personal vehicle. Parking is not available in the garden premise but outside it. The place is of great attraction and utter importance, as obviously it holds the great Banyan tree, the tree with the biggest canopy in whole world. It is more than 250 years old and have atleast 3770 aerial roots. The garden spread across 270 acres, accomodate exotic and indigenous plant species from 5 countries in the world. Central Herbarium is also a point of attraction where the information of all the species of flora is kept in a prescribed manner. The entry inside the garden is payable at 10 per head. Also it's a great picnic spot. Just don't litter and keep it beautiful.

If you love or like to visit greenery please visit this place, it is really eye soothing. And the environment is also healthy, full of oxygen. Must visit the old baniyan tree which is the main attraction of this place. This is a good place to come with your friends, family and special ones. If you love Ganges, you will also get it here along with her clam and cool breeze.

After renovation, it is much easier cleaner and more enjoyable than before. It is sad to see the boat rides no longer happening in the lakes but, the distribution and maintenance is really good. So many birds, butterflies dragon flies, new species of plants and a separate play area for kids. We loved it.

A pleasant environment full of natural beauty. A remarkable place with both historical and botanical value. When you come here, you will be amazed by the variety of plants. Although many things are ruined due to lack of maintenance. This quiet place is suitable for both lovers to walk hand in hand on the path of the unknown (only if you are visiting for the first time â˜ēī¸), as well as for families to get lost in the greenery. Come and be rid if you can.

The ticket price here is 30 RS each , and for people who just want morning walk membership the price for that is 150 RS per month, Overall a very good experience 💕💕..........

A unique banyan tree which is so big that u cant even find the original trunk.though the original rrunk is not there as it destroys in natural calamity. U can have the fun of boating there at such nominal price of Rs. 25. A nice place for couples as well as for families to spend a day till 5 pm

ITS A VERY GOOD PLACE. SOME OF THE OLD TREES AND BUILDINGS ARE THERE. BESIDES IT GANGES RIVER CAN BE SEEN AND YOU CAN SIT AND RELAX THERE FOR SOME TIME. BASICALLY IT IS A VERY MENTALLY RELAXING PLACE. ENTRY FEE 10 RS PER HEAD AND NO PLASTIC BAGS ARE ALLOELWED. THEY WILL CHECK YOUR BAGS SO PLEASE DON'T CARRY IT.

This is a botanical garden. If you are a enthousiast about tree then it is a good place for you. Many of people go there at winter time for just a picnic. But now a days maintenance of park become zero. So it is hard to find a good place for family sitting.

Botanical gardens are often run by universities or other scientific research organizations, and often have associated herbaria and research programmes in plant taxonomy or some other aspect of botanical science. In principle, their role is to maintain documented collections of living plants for the purposes of scientific research, conservation, display, and education, although this will depend on the resources available and the special interests pursued at each particular garden. The origin of modern botanical gardens is generally traced to the appointment of professors of botany to the medical faculties of universities in 16th century Renaissance Italy, which also entailed the curation of a medicinal garden. However, the objectives, content, and audience of today's botanic gardens more closely resembles that of the grandiose gardens of antiquity and the educational garden of Theophrastus in the Lyceum of ancient Athens.

A very peaceful & relaxing place to make you completely lose track of time.An amazing place as well to enrich your knowledge on diversity of flora. A great place to spend winter weekends,as in summers it may get uncomfortable.

  • 5/5 Sayantan M. 4 years ago on Google
The expanse of this Botanical Garden has to be seen to believe. It is absolutely huge and covered with indigenous flora of all kind. The landmark has to be the 250 year old Great Banyan Tree which is now blocked from tourists but can be seen from beyond the gates. Go here but don't carry any plastic and throw your waste everywhere. There are dedicated bins for this. The park charges an entry fee and there are extra charges for still cameras and video cameras. Take long walks and delve yourself into the stillness of nature amidst Howrah.

Most calm and peaceful place in Howrah. Government should a little bit more effective to take care of the species of many varieties of tree. And place should be clean a little bit more. And should not give permission to the love birds to spoil the scenario of the nature by doing some awkward stunts in front of the visitors.

This is a nice place. Moderately maintained. A large green patch within the concrete jungle. Huge variety of flora and fauna. This could easily be called a bird sanctuary. However, not a great place as 'botanical garden'. No proper tagging for 99% of the trees. All in-house museums like cactas house or palm house are not accessible to public. No proper direction to see what and where. Only some good pathways are built. Even there is no parking space. You can keep outside but local political chaps will earn a fortune. The only things that wows you is the banyan tree. But again you are not allowed inside.

In one word, very badly maintained. There are few toilets for gents and ladies but without water and cleaning for months. There is greenery but very chaotic, with badly maintained open spaces and debris of fallen trees here and there. I didn't notice canteen inside the garden where one can have food. Lack of drinking water tap, with thread like water coming from them. No park or amusement for keeping young toddlers busy. No transport system for old people. One has to walk a kilometre from main gate to reach a spot suitable for sightseeing. Very few staff to look after tourist problems. Labels on tree are erased due to non maintenance and it's tough to know the name and genus of tree. The 10 rupee entry fee can only be a excuse for such a pathetic condition of this garden.

Oldest botanical garden in India since the colonial period. Many rare plant species are protected here. As it is a huge forest in an urban area many bird and insect species can be found here, so it's a heaven for bird watching and entomological field study. But one drawback of this place that it is under staffed and does not have guides for ordinary people as they may be not so well versed in identifying plant and animals.

A few friends, like minded, nature loving , got together after long. So we decided to visit the botanical garden. Everyone else had visited the place except for me. The garden usually opens at 0800, but the ticket incharge didn't show. He was late and we had turned up at the gate by 0730. The guards woudnt let us enter as well. But it was worth the wait. There are multiple entrance gates, but if you would want breakfast or meals that would only be at main entrance. The garden is huge and its main attraction is the 4500 yr banyan tree. I wanted to touch it , but now they have barricaded it. The main trunk has also collapsed. The society has used bamboo for supporting this old tree. It was very peaceful as we had reached quite early. However the sad part is the garden is strewn with plastic. One of our friends has a huge camera, and for bird watchers and herpers this is of course a fantastic place.there is a pass which can also be taking for morning walkers and athletes.

Well there are some couples trying to have some intimate time, if you look past it this place has so much to it. The ticket price to enter was 10 per head. • 1/5 Nemai Chandra G. 4 months ago on Google
The place was very good as I have seen 20 years back but the attitude of the recent stuffs are horrible. They thought that this is their own property and they to not bother about the visitors. They must have to teaches the importance of this place with respect to heritage and tourism. For example, they do not permit us to take photographs outside the gate before purchasing the entry tickets and there is no respect to show and about the place. Someone asked why should they go inside.... and they do not bother to tell anything... just go and see is the gesture.... they only treate this property as a private park for the local couples and gurd them for some ill intension. People want to visit this place and who have observed such attitude of the staff in roll must be reported for the change. We all are responsible for keep eyes on our nation heritage and not let they spoil due to someone's I'll attitude. Thank you.
