It's a deluxe South Indian vegetarian restaurant where I visited in order to relish the delicacies that they had to offer. These are the following pros and cons, which I personally experienced at the Raj Restaurant. Pros :- 1) Centrally located & very close to the Jatin Das Park metro station. 2) Premium quality vegetarian dishes. 3) Pleasant restaurant ambience & fully air conditioned. 4) Widest range of Dosa varieties. Cons :- 1) Extremely costly, even a basic cup of tea will cost you ₹70 here. 2) Slow customer service. 3) Quantity is too less when compared to the price being charged. 4) Not all the foods on the menu are available all the time. Recommended only for a premium dining experience. 👍🏻

Located at 10/2, Manoharpukur Road, Kolkata, West Bengal 700026 Raj is a South Indian restaurant. They specialize in South Indian cuisine, but they also provide Chinese, Italian and other food items. Try the masala dosa, cheese dosa, filter coffee, idly, medu vada, sizzler and pizzas. Moderately on the expensive side, average ambience though air conditioned, average staff behaviour are the highlights of this place.

Went to this place after ages. Ambience is poor but food is great. Mini thalis are a must try. Soft idlis and crisp wada. I had the rasam too it was nice hot and spicy. 2 negatives of the place. Cleanliness needs to improve And Soft drink served is fountain which lacks the taste and it hardly has any fizz.

I wanted to take a moment to express my utmost satisfaction with the dining experience at your restaurant. From the moment I entered, the ambiance was delightful, and the staff exhibited exceptional hospitality. The menu offered a diverse range of delectable dishes, each surpassing expectations in terms of flavor and presentation. The attention to detail in the culinary creations truly stood out, and it's evident that the chefs take pride in their work. Moreover, the service was impeccable. The waitstaff was attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable about the menu, enhancing the overall dining experience. I felt well taken care of throughout the evening. I would like to commend the entire team for consistently delivering a memorable and delightful dining experience. It's clear that your commitment to excellence has not gone unnoticed. I look forward to returning and recommending your establishment to friends and family. Thank you for a wonderful culinary journey.

the quality and ambience has gone down. full meals are no longer served. mini meals are partially bengali like - mustard oil based vegetable and pickle was served. horrible. traditional kesari is no longer in the menu. sambar with idli tastes worse- better off having idli sambar on street side, any bet street side sambar will taste way better! overall everything has gone down the drain- please don't visit.

Raj has always been the best south indian food place in Kolkata and will always remain so :) I'd suggest you order only South Indian dishes - dosas (any), Idli, Vada, etc.

Lovely, tasty food. They are maintaining their standard relentlessly for more than 25 years. The space is clean, utensils and the furniture are clean. Waiters are well mannered. And the food is yummy.

Very good south indian food. Good service. Rates slightly higher compared to other south indian restaurants, but worth the price. Loved the food.

Definite must visit if you like an old charm restaurant compared to a 5 star one. Good food, lipsmacking meduvada with tangy sambar and a super tasty coconut chutney. Their south Indian fare is famous, be it the different types of dosas, thalis or filter coffee. The super friendly and courteous staff not to mention are a bonus.

Quality has degraded as compared to previous Raj.White Chutney was having sour taste. Only 2-3 persons for serving. Previous serving team was very excellent. Authentic South Indian taste has vanished.

  • 5/5 CA Shomdip G. 2 years ago on Google
The best taste of authentic South Indian delicacies at most reasonable prices. Buying since kid days, four decades and a half back....the Dosa taste remains unchanged !!!

Raj was one of the most popular south indian joints in South Kolkata. I have been eating here for decades. Sadly they have been beset by labour unrest. The place is covered with protest posters and the tables are empty. A single waiter is standing around and the food quality is now terrible. Best to avoid until further notice.

In my last review about Hotel Raj I gave 4 star. Today it was not the same Hotel Raj that I have known for the last 40 years. Food was rather disappointing, although coffee as great as ever. Hope they try to improve what to my opinion was once the best south Indian available in Kolkata.

Amazing legacy of mouth watering south Indian food and snacks. I have been visiting this restaurants with my father and mother when i was 5 years of age ...so it's been 30 years now and I still make it a point to dine at Raj restaurant when I'm in Kolkata. Recommend this restaurant for good food , great hospitality, good efficient service, tasty food and money worth.

Located In the Hazrat road Raj hotel is one of the suggested hotels by riksha walas where u will get most of the south indian snacks and breakfast items. The traditionally built hotel stands un noticed and the interior is also well maintained traditionally in A typical kolkata architecture. Have a 100 varieties of dosas and other snacks.

It's been long time I had visited Raj Restaurant, which happens to be very near my home and a go to place since my childhood, for a birthday dinner of anybody in the family. The upkeep of the place has improved a little but the footfall of customers seems to have been lower from earlier days. The quality and taste of South Indian food is still the same, whereas a drastic additions to the menu has been done to suffice the need of younger generation. Overall the experience was up to the mark.

Bad Food. Extremely disappointing South Indian food. Batter used for Dosa, Idli & Uttapam is not good. Not recommended at all.

The place has maintained its streak of serving delicious food. Super fast delivery service and one can never stop being amazed at the traditional dish of this restaurant, i.e., the dancing coffee.

  • 3/5 Prashant P. 1 year ago on Google
The food was okay, the bad part was 1. No working fan or A/C 2. Zero cleanliness, the hand wash place had pan masala spitting. 3. For cutlery, they only had plastic spoons, plastic forks and single use disposable cups for gravy or dals. 4. When asked for onions, the staff started complaining. 5. Too much time to prepare breads. 6. Rice was parboiled for some reason.

  • 2/5 Aritra M. 3 years ago on Google
Tried Raj Restaurant for the first time. Tried a butter mixed veg dhosa. Dhosa was okay, the sambar and coconut chutney were subpar. The coconut crumbs were separate from the chutney and very chewy, which I disliked. The sambar was bland, could have used some more spice. The ambience of the restaurant is less than ordinary, but ample space was available. The cutlery is styrofoam with plastic spoons which were terrible and very cheap. To sum up, the food was okay at best, though price is too high for what you get, especially considering the cheap styrofoam dishes. Not coming back.

Strongly recommend to those who want to try South Indian tiffen items. I recommend their Uthappam. They have huge list of dosa varieties. Con: Over priced. Vada is not upto the mark.

  • 3/5 Gérard D. 1 year ago on Google
I do enjoy dosas since years back, it's easy meal, filling, can be tasty and with variety.. as street food it can be prepared in front of you and cheap too.. on the advice of people i came here, had mysore special masala dosa; first i have to say its very filling, second it was perfectly cooked, there was this subtle taste of gee, and coconut chutney n sambar were right! It sure was one of the more balanced dosa i had,... but it wasn't the unforgettable one. It was fine. I was a tad surprised by the price (remenber AC rest aren't street food) not on the cheap side. (255 + taxes)( other choices cheaper) I wd say it's worth it. the restaurant (exist since 1965) itself was "blunt", no fancy here…! staff was ok.

One of the best, if not the best places to have south Indian in kolkata. Try their ghee podi idly and thank me later. Actually everything is good. There is also pizza on the menu but why have pizza at a South Indian joint!

Good south indian food restaurant. The food is very good, do try it, do try the filter coffee. The place is well maintained, sitting area is ok ok. Very cozy place, if u love south indian food, should give it a try. They also have Chinese and Italian in there menu, but it's speciality is south indian food. The place has lost its charm and the hygiene of the place is not at all safe during covid times. They are wearing the plastic gloves and doing all the work without changing them. They should highly invest in the use and throw plastic gloves and keep them clean and also change them every minute as they are touching everyone's table and also food in the kitchen with the same hands.

As a first time visitor to the city in 2018, I was shocked at how authentic the flavors of the South Indian dishes were, at this old-style, no-frills restaurant. I gorged on rava dosas and relished the different types of chutneys, which somehow reminded me of grandma. :) Five stars just for that.

Lot have changed over the years, quality of food, staff behaviour and everything, it is deserted look now. They serve parcel sambar and chutney in polythene packs. It is ridiculous. Old employees had a bonding with their customers, all new faces. RAJ RESTAURANT IS NOW HISTORY

An institution when it comes to South Indian Food. However, in recent times, the quality of the food has gone downhill. Some of the must try items (special chutney, masala dosa) have maintained a level of consistency but other items have not. The sambar in particular has deteriorated in quality. Would still recommend visiting this place however.
