Came for an art exhibition of my kid, but found that the place is much more than that.

Tried to visit the RKM Golpark museum on May 26 Friday evening around 5 with my wife and 8-year-old daughter. The security guard at the entrance on Southern Avenue denied us entry citing the “DRESS CODE” mentioned on the notice board. On checking out, we could only read that casual dress was not allowed. What RKM authorities meant casual dress code for museum visitors was NOT clarified. I was wearing a shirt and decent, branded white three-quarters, which I have worn to scores of temples in Kolkata or in North and South India but never denied entry on that pretext. On enquiring at the reception, the three elderly gents seated there were evasive on the dress code and “left it to our judgment”. We were aghast! We walked out! Maybe RKM is happy with the seniors and do not wish brown-skinned middle-aged and juniors to check out their museum. We are sure of the racism, which my wife has faced for wearing a T-shirt faced in Thailand temples too, whereas we have seen white couples wearing skimpy clothes walking past us into those temples. But what left us bewildered was we could see people walking in wearing jeans and round-collar T-shirts into the RKM Golpark premises. And we were only visiting the museum, not any temple or religious place! It was such a loss of face in front of my young daughter and that too from an institution like the RKM. We have even taken her to RKM Belur Math but not faced such inconvenience. RKM authorities should introspect and stop being biased towards their own countrymen.
