India's Only Living Tramcar Memorabilia as Heritage in Kolkata. The First One of it's Kind, This Place Will Surely Make You Fall in Love With Calcutta's Rich Culture, Nostalgia & Heritage. Located in Esplanade, The Smaranika Museum Consists of Two Coaches with the First Coach Being The Cafeteria Where You Can Get Snacks While The Second Coach is The Museum Displaying The Historical Journey of Calcutta Tramways Since The British Period. A Much Recommended Place in Kolkata To Visit For Lifetime Memories !!

Peaceful, small tram museum with a small cafeteria inside. Do visit at least once. ❤ It is just a few minutes from the Dharmatala crossing, in the Esplanade tram depot complex, just opposite of Decre's Lane.

Inaugurated in 2014, Smaranika, the tram museum in Kolkata is the brainchild of CTC to preserve the fading history and heritage of tram in Kolkata. The small museum and café is located deep inside Esplanade CTC Depot, very close to the shopping district but away from the chaos of moving traffic. Interestingly the museum has no separate building, but has been thoughtfully housed in an actual retired rolling stock. The particular tram was built in 1938 and belonged to the Bombay Fleet of trams. It has been refurbished at the Nonapukur Workshop in Kolkata, retaining the wooden vintage look of the car. Of the two bogies of the car, the first one is a small café while the second bogie houses the museum and the exhibits. Timing :- Smaranika, the tram museum is open 6 days a week from 1pm to 8 pm daily. On Thursdays the museum remains closed for the entire day. Entry :- To enter the Smaranika compound, which is a beautiful garden with the stationary tram car at the center, one has to buy a ticket of INR 20/- per head. The ticket is designed as an enlarged version of original tram ticket but in thick paper, qualifying itself as a memorabilia! The ticket allows one to stay inside Smaranika for 45 minutes, which is justified since space inside is limited.

Located in Esplanade behind govt bus stand. One can take the road with the stand or take the broad road adjacent where you will see couple of trams kept inside a garden (that is part of the museum). Chances are that you might not find it, ask the locals there, preferably some from the bus stand. I asked the cops and few of them weren't aware of such a place! Entry Ticket is priced INR 20.00 This museum opens by 1:00 pm and closes by 8:00 pm and Thursdays the museum is closed. There's plenty of space to park vehicles and toilets are available. There are two tram coaches that has been converted into the museum, first coach, which is also the enterance is a small cafe with a vendor selling tea, coffee and snacks (railway style). The second coach has pictures and replicas of trams models and old Kolkata. Considering that Kolkata is the only place in India where trams are found, it's worth a visit to thia museum though the place is under developed.

“Smaranika”- Kolkata Tram Museum In the midst of the Esplanade Tram Depot, the busy tram lines are converged in a triangular garden where CTC-142 stands forever. It is now a museum and cafeteria, where one can enjoy a cup of tea in the midst of history of Kolkata. The Smaranika tramcar is officially designated CTC-142, was built in 1938. It was renovated and modified to accommodate a cafeteria in the 1st class compartment, and a tram museum in the back compartment, second class compartment. Smaranika tramcar displays the age old and the modern equipment and gadgets used by the Calcutta Tramways Corporation over the years. Among them are the Coin Exchanger with Punch and Ticket Pockets that was used in the 1950s by conductor for giving change of correct denominations to passengers. There are also a large number of tram models such as the Byomkesh Bakshi Tram Car. A double-bogie wooden tram car #567 of the year 1931 was specially modified at CTC Nonapukur Workshop in the year 2013 for shooting of the Hindi film ‘Detective Byomkesh Bakshi’ directed by renowned film director Dibakar Banerjee. There are some more trams nearby which are supposed to be part of museum’s exhibits but are in very poor condition. Some are being used as living quarters!

If you are a tram admirer then travel down the memory lane at this meuseum on wheels. This tram meuseum cum cafè has been housed inside a vintage tram and has been thematised upon the history of Indian tram. Smaranika is a wonderful showcase of the Kolkata's prestigeous tram journey. The ticket fee is Rs.10/- for an hour. Mobile photography is allowed but digital and SLR is not. Here you can enjoy small titbits like biscuits, cakes, instant maggi, chips, cold drinks, cold coffee etc. It is a perfect place to escape the heat with your better half.

Kolkata Smaranika Tram Museum, also known as the Tram World, is a museum dedicated to trams located in Esplanade, Kolkata, India. The museum was established in 2014 with the aim of preserving the history and heritage of the Kolkata tram system, which is the only operating tram system in India. The museum houses a collection of vintage trams, including a horse-drawn tram, which was the first type of tram to operate in Kolkata in 1873. Visitors can take a ride on the vintage trams and learn about the history of the Kolkata tram system. The museum also features a collection of photographs, artifacts, and documents related to the tram system, providing visitors with an insight into the evolution of the system over the years. There are also interactive exhibits that showcase the technology behind trams and how they work. Apart from the exhibits, the museum also hosts various cultural events, including concerts and art exhibitions, providing a platform for local artists to showcase their talent. Overall, the Kolkata Smaranika Tram Museum is a unique museum that offers a glimpse into the history and heritage of the Kolkata tram system. It is an excellent place to visit for anyone interested in the history of transportation or wants to experience a ride on a vintage tram.

What I like most about this place is there is a section to sit and have snacks. Really great place to hangout with friends. Timing: opens at 1pm Ticket price: 20rs Thursday closed

Nice!!!! It's made on an original tram. First bogie is for museum and second bogie is for cafeteria. More than museum I love the cafeteria and the employees are very kind nature. I should have gave 5 star but only thing that museum is too small and entry fee is also low Rs.20 for single tram museum and in combo Rs.15 but it is too small. But experience is awesome.

The thing is that this is exactly not a museum at all. Actually this is a basically a tram compartment repurposed into an air conditioned restaurant. That's it and that's the whole premise of the museum. Upon entering you're greeted with an ordering counter for snacks and beverages. There's one small room at the end of the tram which houses some of the antique items ranging from tickets , stamps, news cuttings to miniature models and equipment. The rest of the compartment is dedicated for seating arrangements for you to enjoy your food. For 20 rupees as an entry fee (in the style of a cool tram ticket) I think this leaves a desire to see something more from the museum.

The tram has two compartments, one is cafeteria area and the other one is the museum. The foods they serve are good and cheap. We had coffee there for just Rs. 15 per cup. The museum part carries various informations and tickets, passes, miniature trams, machines, pictures of trams depicting the glorious journey of trams system in Kolkata. The entry ticket price is 20 per person for 45 min.

An excellent storehouse of tramways transportation system of old city of Calcutta. Lots of artifacts, models are kept inside enriching the knowledge regarding history of transportation system of this tricentennary city. Generally the place kept closed in Thursday, but during holidays the place gains the attendance of lots of visitors. Best place for a couple date, lots of chats between friends and enjoying nostalgia with hot coffee and snacks, for 45 minutes. Moreover the place is so photogenic that one cannot switch off his/her mobile camera, but digital camera is not allowed inside. According to my visiting experience, ideal time to visit is after the sunset, when the lights become more luminous, the place becomes more enchanting.

Kolkata Tram Museum “Smaranika” is housed within a vintage tram built in 1938. Interestingly, this wooden body streamlined tram is still functional. This tram has been modified at the Nonapukur Workshop with a vestibule to help visitors move from one car to another within the tram. One car is a modified cafeteria whereas the other showcases some interesting memorabilia on trams in Kolkata from the early days to the present day. The whole experience of going through an archive on trams within a tram is quite fascinating.

You can rediscover your childhood nostalgia of tram rides here. Entry fee is just 20 rs. There is small cafeteria in the first coach, and when you enter the second coach, you will definitely travelled back in time where you can enrich yourself with the history and gradual development of tram rides. However, the place is little bit clumsy inside. If the authority could arrange another tram and decorate it completely to showcase the glorius history and models with adequate space- It will definitely attract more and more vistiors.

Lots & lots can be done to make this attractive and a world class tram museum. As only a few cities around the world have tramcar system of transportation, and Kolkata figuring in that rarity although with only two routes operative, a well planned tram museum would attract hordes of tourists and tram lovers. First of all, the approach is not well identified from Dharmatola or Esplanade East side. After asking around, you spot a small garden with two tram bogies, in which the museum is housed. Practically, only the second bogey has been used for displays while the first bogey is entrance cum tea stall. The garden has stray dogs running around and festoon of washed undergarments hung out to dry. Your nose will accost the smell of stale urine in that compound. There are two tram bogeys in the adjacent, which have been taken over by vagabonds and we were forbidden to enter there. The exhibits are very less in number, unorganised and not properly lit to be called a museum. During my college and university days at Kolkata, I used to regularly ride on trams plying in various routes, sometimes just for the fun and to gaze out of the wide wooden windows and get lost in daydreaming. So, I have a special affection for trams and want that they should make a comeback as a cheap and green mode of public transport, though in a modern version. My suggestion is to totally revamp this museum with help of experts and tramcar lovers, have more exhibits in proper displays, spread out the area of the museum within the erstwhile Curzon Park, beautify the complex with welcome gate and signages, arrange more vintage tramcars from old depots and preferably a ticketed circular joyride every hour within the Curzon Park complex in a tram car.

I love everything about trams since childhood so obviously wanted to visit this place for a long time. Even though, due to funding constraints the maintenance of this place is not up to the mark.. but I loved the place.. since it had so much history related to the evolution of trams. The owner of the cafe told us so much history about trams.. me along with my niece and family enjoyed listening to those stories. Unfortunately trams are been decommissioned and may become obsolete at some point, but just hope that the heritage of this museum stays in Kolkata. Encourage everyone to raise funds and help this museum survive.

Don't go there for the museum because it's not a museum per se. Go there for the nostalgia and the old rustic charm of an old tram, if you are a Tram and Kolkata lover. Basically an old Tram has been air conditioned and in one of the carriages they have kept a few Tram Memorabilia with tram models etc., while the other carriage is a small cafe cum basic snack place. Loved the old tram style seating in the so called cafe.
