A paradise for migratory birds from all across the globe, this huge waterbody is a revered tourism destination for ardent bird lovers and the admirers of mother nature. However, during my visit, I had observed that the maintenance standards to be quite inferior. This beautiful jheel could be easily transformed into a major tourist attraction, if properly maintained and taken care of, by the government. Nonetheless, it was a pleasant experience and I would recommend everyone to visit here, atleast once. ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

Located next to Santragachi railway station, this jheel is a habitat for thousands of migratory birds, particularly during winter. During my last visit, I spotted birds like lesser whistling duck, gadwall, stork-billed kingfisher, black kite, citrine wagtail, eurasian moorhen, bronze-winged jacana, green bee-eater, plain prinia, purple heron, Indian pond-heron, cattle egret etc. But the lake does not seem to be properly maintained as a large part of the lake is blocked by hyacinths and sewage from several houses around the lake is directly mixing with the water of the lake.

I heard about this birding spot since last 22 years, but sadly couldnโ€™t visit. Visited this place only on January 6 of 2020 around the afternoon 4 pm. There were many migratory birds from Ferrugenous Pochard, Baikal Teal and Common Moorhen categories. In fact all these categories are variants of Ducks. I found similar birds in Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary in Rajasthan. I find this place interesting. But, because of the housing constructed around the water bodies, and due to tge fact that the water is not clean enough, all kinds of the expected birds are not arriving these days. Migratory birds need natural water bodies without any threats for speding their winter! Man-made structures and concrete jungles are deterrents to the natural choices of these beautiful birds! If you like my review encourage me by a like ๐Ÿ‘. That will keep me going on and write more reviews with useful information!

migratory birds Santragachhi Jheel is a large lake, located next to the Santragachhi railway station.howrah.west Bengal , India ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ This lakeย attracts large number of migratory birds in the winter months, particularly in December and January. But lack of administration the largest lake filled with" kachuripana"....only 10% water exhibit in that lake, where migrated birds take their shelter.... maximum area unauthorised enclosed, worst experience, Request Indian Railways,West Bengal Govt & local administration please see the matter of Indian heritage...

I live in Santragachi, and honestly speaking neither the people nor the concerned authorities do anything to clean or maintain the Jheel. It was a beautiful place untill a decade ago when many exotic birds used to come during their hibernation period in winter, but now it's nothing like it used to be. The fences around the jheel is broken and people do fishing which is illegal. This is the condition of the Jheel right now, dated 21.10.2019

This place is famous for its exotic birds in winter. But now a days pollution is increasing so birds are coming in less numbers. It is said that there are 60 kinds of birds come every year. Local habitats are not careful to this beautiful lake and it's ecosystem. This place is easy to reach by satragachi station.

Very poor condition for migrate bird. water are filled with water plants. Around the lake high rise buildings are covered. Railway engine are constantly making noise. Water condition are also very poor for Drainage system. If it will continue than migratory bird will not come for future. Must visit this place for watching different types of migratory birds and photography. Please keep this place clean for our foreigners guests( migratory birds). Mainly whistling duck water piping can see.

A hotspot for migratory birds, in a semi-urban location. There are enough places to sit and enjoy watching the birds; it's very good for photographers, as well. It's quite easy to access if you have a motorcycle or a small car.

Famous for migratory birds in winter, don't expect too much, Northern Pintails are the common most bird you will see in flocks. Nice place & environment, though surroundings are dirty. One must try not to litter that place with garbage to protect their beautiful habitat amidst concrete garbage.

This place will be good to visit if it is maintained properly. The government should maintain it properly otherwise it is like a garbage dump area. It will have good tourist attraction if it is maintained well.
