The General Post Office, Kolkata, is the central post office of the city of Kolkata, India, and the chief post office of West Bengal. The post-office handles most of the city's inbound and outbound mail and parcels. It is open on all days from 10 am to 6 pm except on Sunday when it is closed. The place where GPO is situated was actually the site of the first Fort William, which was damaged by Shiraj-ud-Daulah at the time of the “Seige of Calcutta” in 1756. It is also said to be the site of the infamous Black Hole of Calcutta.

The spot where the GPO stands today, once stood the Old Fort William of Calcutta, which was the centre of violent battle when Siraj-ud-daula, the Nawab of Bengal laid siege to Calcutta. The present General Post Office was designed by Walter L. B. Granville who has also designed Calcutta’s High Court, the Indian Museum in Calcutta and the All Souls Memorial Church in Cawnpore (Kanpur). It was constructed by Mackintosh Burn Ltd., and cost Rs. 6,30,510. Construction started in 1864 and was completed on 2nd October, 1868. The stand out architectural feature of the GPO is its lofty dome on the South East Corner. The dome is supported by 28 Corinthian columns. The tower itself is nearly 120 feet in height. Outside the dome is a multi-dialled illuminated clock. The clock was installed in 1896 and was manufactured by the same company that made the Big Ben clock in London. It was imported at the cost of Rs. 7000. The ground floor of the GPO covers 49,471 square feet while the 1st floor covers 29,713 square feet.

A historical and a precious building this General Post Office of Kolkata is which is worth seeing and located in the heart of Kolkata with renowned buildings/structures in large numbers in close proximity at Benoy, Badal Dinesh Bagan (BBD Bag in short). Being the largest serving Post Office in Kolkata, all sorts of postal facilities are available at GPO. What required is perhaps more cleaning up of the huge premises especially the Mailing Department of the Phillatelic Bureau and may be some other areas of this historical monument.

KOLKATA G.P.O. Netaji Subhas Road, Fairlie Pl, B.B.D. Bagh, Kolkata, West Bengal 700001 The General Post Office, Kolkata, is the central post office of the city of Kolkata, India, and the chief post office of West Bengal. The post-office handles most of the city's inbound and outbound mail and parcels. Situated in the B.B.D. Bagh area, the imposing structure of the GPO is one of the landmarks in the city. The site where the GPO is located was actually the site of the first Fort William. An alley beside the post office was the site of the guardhouse that housed the infamous 1756 Black Hole of Calcutta (1756). The General Post Office was designed in 1864 by Walter B. Grenville (1819-1874), who acted as consulting architect to the government of India from 1863 to 1868. The staircase at the eastern side of the GPO features a brass plate, which marks the eastern end of the Old Fort William. This is probably the only remaining of the ancient fort of Calcutta. Recently a marble plaque has been installed on the Eastern walls of GPO, which highlight the Brass Plate. To the north of the GPO is the Kolkata Collectorate, which was once the office of the regional ‘Collector’, a designation invented by the British Government after 1857 to replace the traditional Zamindars. #KolkataGPO General information Town or City: Kolkata CountryIndia: Coordinates Construction started: 1864 Completed: 1868 Design and construction: ArchitectWalter B. General Post Office (G.P.O.) is the head post office of Kolkata and West Bengal. Kolkata Postal District is widely distributed from Barackpore or Barasat for North 24 Parganas to Sonarpur or Joka for South 24 Parganas and Eastern side Bidhannagar (Salt Lake) or New Town City are also included. The G.P.O. is a unique shapes i.e. round shape. It's architectural style is mixed i.e. British and Nababi style. There are more space for the customers and for the general people. This is a unique structure within Kolkata. G.P.O. was established in 1868 at one part of the old Fort Willeum.

You won’t believe this; the staircase of the eastern part of the post offices comprises pure brass plates. Location: Netaji Subhas Rd, Fairley Place, B.B.D. Bagh, Kolkata, West Bengal 700001. Neoclassical structure with a high white dome built in the 1860s on the site of a British fort. The post-office handles most of the city's inbound and outbound mail and parcels. Situated in the B.B.D. Bagh. This building has beautiful architecture, both inside and outside. Do check out the cental dome from the Great Hall within. It is the city's main post office now, I would personally recommend that you drive by slowly enjoying the view of the building and taking a few photographs. This is a very big postoffice with lot of facilities available. It is the place which has been allotted pincode number 1 for Kolkata. very easy to reach from any part of Kolkata.

Sent parcels by air mail to two different states in Australia. Both arrived in 2 weeks (end of December). Far better price than courier services could offer. Postal staff were helpful and efficient. Had parcels stitched and wrapped by long time professional wrapper located along external fence for 200 rupees which expedited the whole process. Parcel tracking included notification when leaving customs in india and then when secured by Australia Post to delivery. Was very impressed with India Post. Expect process to take an hour at least.

The post office handles most of the city's inbound and outbound mail and parcels. Situated in the B. B. D. Bagh area, the imposing structure of the GPO is one of the landmarks in the city.

One of the oldest General Post Office of India constructed in 1868. Previously at this exact spot, stood the first Fort William which was demolished during the seige of Kolkata in 1756. Later on a new fort (which still stands) was built in the Maidan. The ruins of the old fort were later cleared to construct the GPO.

One of the happening marketplaces in Kolkata - New Market is an enclosed area with around 2,000 shops. Despite regular floods and two devastating fire incidents, this market remains as the centre of Kolkata's shopping experience. From clothing to footwear, jewellery, electronics and more, the variety of products found here are seemingly endless.

A building that is 150+ years old and sits on a locale which used to be the old Fort William truly reels of history and nostalgia. One of the must visit locations of Kolkata sitting right in the western part of Dalhousie square. The huge white dome is an unmistakable sight even from kilometres away in drone photography.

A royal and heritage building. Though the infrastructure is old, it won’t make you feel paranoid as the building is very well maintained. Also has a cafe with a book store.

This magnificent building with a huge dome stands on a historic site the south-east bastion of the Old Fort William. The building was designed by the Government Architect Watter B. Granville, and completed in 1868. The tower itself is nearly 120 ft. in height. It is currently the office of the Post Master General. Look for the inscription on the marble plaque and the brass line running through the stairs marking the position of the south-east bastion of the Old Fort William: Inside, there is a Philatelic Bureau from where newly issued stamps and First Day Covers may be collected.

As far as various service like Booking of parcel/letters, Savings Bank related work, Aadhaar card related work , purchasing of Philatelic stamp and anciliaries and many others are concerned, Kolkata GPO is the best. Must visit Suili the Parcel Cafe, Philatelic Museum of Kolkata GPO.
