A wide range of delicious vegan options. We had the flat bread and dip and battered avocado to start. The avocado was scrumptious. The bread was good but the dip was a little bland. Mains were satay, laksa and curry. All were fabulous. The wine was reasonably priced - we had a prosecco. The service was friendly and helpful. It was a wonderful experience which we will definitely be repeating.

I have to say this is really delicious vegan meal I had in Melbourne. I love the satay dishes. Laksa is not like traditional Malaysian one too spicy for me. I would love to go back here again.

Overall great experience. We had the satay, curry and laksa, and the avocado. The food tasted great but think it is definitely on the pricey side. Friendly staff, nice atmosphere.

Lovely place. Pros: -Everything vegan, so no hassle sifting through the menu. -All dishes tested were very unique and yummy, with flavour combinations never tasted before. -Very fast service. -Warm and welcoming staff Cons -Not a huge menu, but everything looks delicious. -Can be a bit noisy with the high ceiling and open space. First time eating at Shakahari, and I would come back. Especially as its around the corner from Nova cinema 😁

I still remember my dining experience here, and it was all good things and praise. As soon as we entered the little house turned restaurant, we were warmly greeted by the staff. This place serves some quality vegetarian dishes. I believe everything we ordered back then was delicious. The staff were also attentive and quickly got our needs addressed. Their toilets are located at a separate elevated back garden area outside, so it further shows the layout reminiscent of a former house.

The restaurant provided electic choices of vegetarian foods, very "ohm" atmosphere and the staffs were so kind-hearted

A great vegetarian restaurant. The food is filling and full of flavour. The service very good. The four dishes we ordered (satay, lalsa, curry and green papaya salad) were all tasty. The place is quite noisy though.

Nice vegan restaurant. Friendly staff. Most of the food was nice. Dumplings were delicious, and so to was tofu pandan desert. Serve of rice for the nonya curry needs to be 5X larger. Gave about 1 teaspoon of rice for a bowl of curry.

Absolutely amazing experience. If you have wondered whether or not to try this restaurant, this is your confirmation to go - you will not regret it! The food is sensational, the staff are lovely & the food comes out super quick. The space is so warm and welcoming. I love coming here. Every experience is just as great as the last. Definitely recommend the tofu dessert, it is seriously to die for!!!

We came at 6:30 Friday night for dinner. When we were finally acknowledged, it was as if we were a bother. It took an inordinate amount of time to decide which of the dozen tables to sit us at, we were given the menus and she left. So did we. It wasn't the menu, we're vegetarian and have dined there many times. It was the unwelcome atmosphere. Hope the lady is okay. We won't bother you again.

My fiancé and I visited Shakahari the other night and really enjoyed their delicious meals! For the entree I was recommended the Avocado 🥑 magic by the waiter, then the vegan satay, I was not disappointed! Even though their meals aren’t massive, were pretty full so we shared the pana cotta which was also really good. All dishes are vegan so it’s easy to choose a dish. Customer service was very friendly and attentive, we’ll definitely be back to try something else on the menu.

The staff were lovely and communicated well, there was a good wide selection of dishes. The flavours were really unique and inventive! There were great vegan options. The presentation of the entree was really nice. The table service was really good, perfect timing with bringing entre and mains. I loved the bright red corridor as well! The lack of carpet or curtains etc something to soften the room, really made everything echo. I think some soft furnishings would really go a long way ❤️ thank you for a lovely evening

What a great find! Fantastic option for vegetarians and vegans. The service was incredibly quick. All the dishes were good but the avocado magic was exquisite. The booking process was very smooth and the staff were quite helpful. The portion sizes, particularly for the entrees, could have been more generous. Overall, great experience and definitely would dine here again!

Food was excellent. Service was quick, polite and helpful. Old world charm in a heritage building in Carlton. Thoroughly recommend it but you better hurry because they told us owners will be closing the doors by 23 December 2023 unless somebody rescues the business. We hope they continue on.

I'm in Carlton area quite a bit and it's crazy that I've only discovered this place now tucked away on Faraday. If you get a table near the bar it's a lovely atmosphere with natural light coming through the ceiling. Really beautiful set up for a special occasion! Wonderful, genuinely down to earth people working here, especially our waiter on Thursday night ('Henry' it says on the receipt?). Fantastic menu and selection of vegan entrees, mains and desserts. Quick service. Great drinks. So happy to have found this place. Thank you Henry! :) :)

I used to come here all the time and loved it! Took my partner here tonight and whilst the food was as good as always, I do feel like the ambience was lacking. It was dead quiet, and some music really would have given it some sort of atmosphere. I say this with love because I love vegan restaurants and I want them to continue and thrive!

For 20 years we have been visiting Shakahari whenever we can meet up in Melbourne. Last night we had the usual amazing experience. The people serving were lovely and helpful and the food was amazing. We are never ever disappointed. My fave dish for last night was the orange pudding- delish!! Thank you

We booked an outside table in the courtyard. The weather was a mildly humid 18 degrees with no evidence of rain and no predicted rain. On the street outside there were many restaurants with people eating outside. On arrival we were told that outside dining was not possible due to the weather. This is unacceptable, we only eat outside. We are elderly, there is a pandemic and outside eating is accepted as safer. The attitude of this restaurant is unacceptable and we left. We have eaten outside throughout the pandemic in Europe in all weather. This restaurant needs to realign to the new world.

The range of dishes and flavours on offer seemed like they were designed for those with a more subdued palate. Nothing stood out from the bunch of dishes we ordered. The papaya salad was underwhelming and didn’t have the typical tangy, spicy dressing (which can be achieved without fish sauce). The prices didn’t reflect the quality of the food. Also, $16 for a slice of raw cake? It was extremely loud in the restaurant, they really need to invest in some acoustics.

The food was amazing - we loved every single dish! This isn't just another fusion restaurant. The chef has clearly put a lot of thought into reimagining0 traditions flavours using the same ingredients but with a unique twist - really clever cooking! The ambience is humble yet serene, the staff are lovely and the service was super quick. Be sure to check this place out! :)

We love this place! It's apparently the oldest surviving vegan restaurant in Melbourne, established circa the 60s (so we were told my the staff) All vegan menu which is also very delicious. Spacious settings and great organic vegan wine list too! Try and get in early to nab the table by the fire place. Open for lunch and dinner.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the ambience and food at this restaurant. We sat near an open fire with a glass of red ( very reasonably priced) and delicious vegan/ vegetarian meals. The food was beautifully presented, tasty and unique. The service was prompt, polite and friendly. We have dined here before and really recommend this restaurant. A great evening experience.

got the avocado magic, was a bit junk-foody and deep fried taste for me. avocado and capsicum didn't go that well together. sauce was like sweet and sour, was ok lasagne was quinoa and carrot. a little on the oily side and not much flavour. the side broccoli was cooked perfectly 😁 tofu caramel was good, but a bit small.

I've been to Shakahari for lunch on a Saturday. I highly reccomend the Laksa Hebat main course (Japanese udon noodles, spinach, mushrooms and bean sprouts in a ginger flower and lemongrass flavoured, mildly spiced coconut stock and topped with fried tempeh, tofu, seitan and fresh herbs); it was really delicious. It's not cheap, I paid 22,5$ for one main course, but it's worth it.

We are out of country visitors and had been looking forward to coming here. We fought traffic to get here but, unfortunately, the restaurant staff informed us the place was closed when we arrived at 9pm despite listing on Google that showed the restaurant is open until 9:30pm. A disappointment for sure. Just a heads up for those who are arriving close to closing time.

My wife and I had a weekday dinner here. We had the Green Papaya Salad, the Laksa Hebat and the Yuzu, Lime and Avocado "cheesecake." All three were tasty, with the standout dish probably being the papaya salad which was delicious. Definitely an inspired place for a vegan dinner and a welcome break from the Italian restaurants in the area.

What a treat! I ordered the satay dish out of a recommendation, and it was out of this world delicious! It's a cute little place not far off Lygon St, where various eateries are. They even have an outdoor seating. It has that home atmosphere feeling, which I thought makes the food taste better. Lots to choose from and very creative menu, I thought. Staff are very friendly and accommodating. As I was only visiting Melbourne, I'd definitely come back the next time around! And very happy to promote this place to locals, too.

We were lucky enough to have the table by the open fire at Shakahari. None of us ordered the satay chicken, but had food envy when we saw it on other tables. Having said that, we all polished off our own delicious main meals. Lovely, cosy atmosphere. Nice wine selection. No one took our dessert order though so we finished our evening elsewhere

This place was...alright. Service was a bit weird. They packed everyone into one tiny corner of the restaurant, presumably to make it look busy from the front, but it just made us uncomfortable. The man serving us was nice but overall the staff seemed a bit arrogant and unwelcoming. The 'lassi' was a bit sour, but the food (laksa and curry) was quite good. It's worth noting that the menu is vegan (except that the lassi wasn't), not just vegetarian, which I found disappointing but obviously this would be a plus factor for the vegan market. Overall I doubt I'll be back, which is a shame because it looked really promising.

Took my vegetarian partner here last week and was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed the meal too. Reception by the man at the door was welcoming and we had great service from ‘Alison’ according to our bill. As a non vegetarian she suggested that we share a few dishes including a starter of avocado tempura and mushroom dumplings, followed by a satay and a curry, both of which were excellent. Pleasingly sharing plates and cutlery were provided, unlike a recent experience at a top Melbourne restaurant. We went with her suggestion for dessert of a sticky black rice dish which exceeded my hesitant expectation. I give the lady credit. I’d have never thought to chose it and it was fabulous. Prices were modest for a thoroughly enjoyable evening. If I had to fault anything I’d say the decor needs a refresh, the bathrooms a complete overhaul ail and the wine selection could be improved.
