I had been wanting to try this place for a while and it didn’t disappoint. Food, cocktails, service, ambiance was good. We went as a group of 6 and tried quite a few dishes. I recommend the scallops starter and duck main. It was quite busy when we went and we were allocated a table in a marquee area outside which was nice. Toilets are clean and there is free street parking, or it’s easy to get to on the 171/172 bus route.

Had a table booked for 8pm, arrived at 7.50pm and was told to wait in reception with my wife. 8.25pm came and was told for a third time there was 'table issues', the front of house was very rude and didn't explain what the issue was - we ended up walking out at 8.30! Disgraceful - waste of time and travel for rude staff and no table. Wouldn't advise trying this place unless you have a few hours on your hands....

It was my first time eating at Babur and I was not disappointed. I read the reviews before attending do I had a good idea of what to expect. As you enter the restaurant you are met with plagues and awards which is encouraging. Once seated we had poppadoms and the wsiter described all the dips sauces which was nice. I had a mojito and my husband a large Corba. He had scallops and I had 2 pieces of lamb. Main was Venison and Chicken. Overall it was a brilliant eveving and we added a £20.0 tip. Service and food was exceptional.

I love the Babur! I have been eating there for over twenty years especially for birthdays (I had over 30 adults and children for my recent 'significant' birthday) although it's great to just go there for an evening out. The food is just amazing and not like anywhere else. There's a great atmosphere and the staff are really lovely and always welcoming. Give the Babur a try, you'll be glad you did!!!

Michelin star dining in south east London! Veggie tasting menu was perfection and service was first class. Would recommend the currytini (gin, chilli martini)!

A unique find in the outskirts of suburban South East London. You would walk past the restaurant if you had never been here before as it’s not much to look at, even With the many flags and fibreglass tiger on the roof. So elegant. Inside however is a sanitised and formal setting, with many male waiters bustling around you. You come here for the extravagant choices on the menu, and the quality of the food. Exceptional culinary dive into southern Indian cuisine. They have a special 38 year anniversary menu that is well worth looking at, as well as a full tasting menu. I had the king prawns and dosa. I’m definitely coming back to try the rest of menu.

Absolutely flawless dinner at Babur. The restaurant is elegant, service was attentive and with a smile, the menu is extensive and intriguing, food presentation was beautiful and the flavours perfectly balanced. We are so lucky to have Babur in our neighborhood.

Quality Indian restaurant in heart of South East London. Food is beautifully cooked and everything clean and on point. They are attentive, polite, quick. Food was fresh and very tasty and not to mention this place looks like a wedding venue in the back. Beautiful, beautiful!!! Cannot wait to go back.

Birthday dinner for my wife. Great food. I like the feel of the restaurant. They do an assortment of complimentary taster through out the meal. The quality of the food is high. Flavours are on point. Book to avoid disappointment. There is no retainer charged for booking which I appreciate. Text keep you up to date and reminds you.

My favorite Indian restaurant in London. Food is always lovely there. The Sunday buffet does not represent the usual standard of food, but it is a good budget option to try there. We went there for Valentine's. The food was great, but the wine pairing was the best. I enjoyed all the wines that I got the try.

Dining at Babur was a delightful experience. The restaurant's ambiance, while dark, exudes a unique charm, setting it apart from typical Indian eateries. The food was a true highlight, with each dish boasting delicious flavors that left a lasting impression.

The food was incredible, as was the service. Get the monkfish and the crispy potatoes. The lamb chop is also unbelievable. Unexpected, but true, their cocktails are great. I’m a Texan and I know margaritas, the pomegranate margarita was one of the best I’ve ever had.

One of the best Indian restaurants in London. Ordered there many times on Deliveroo. I then decided to order on their website and mistakenly ended up buying from their cheaper restaurant option (Babur to go). I was very very disappointed ?

Visited this restaurant just before new years after reading a review in the paper. The place was very busy but the staff were polite and attentive, I had the paneer to start with which was mind blowing! well balanced and tasted fresh as you like! for my main I had chicken chettinad which although not that hot (it can be depending where you go) was jam packed full of aromatics & spices, the chicken was succulent and tender seriously one of the best curries I have ever had (and I have had a few). They are doing take away at the moment during lock down but I hope to pay them a visit as soon as they re open. Can't recommend this restaurant highly enough.

This is the summary of our experience with the summer set lunch menu in babur: Pros: Nice atmosphere, beautiful tent and fine dining setup, quiet and cozy, delicious dal and acceptable food. Cons: tiny tiny walking insect in the side-salad of the dish ( I am not sure is it because of the semi-outdoor lunch area or from the kitchen?). Lamb ribs was not fresh and it was probably cooked in the day before and then warmed up, it was old and chewy. Instead of one dal for each person as written in the menu, we had a dal to share for each two person, and when we asked for extra top-up, the answer was no! Ignorant service: although they were not busy at all, they ignored us couple of time and we had to call twice for any request. We had to pay the set lunch price for our child, although there is a child price in the menu and we asked for that in the beginning. However, as the portions were really small (even the naan was half-normal-size), we do not regret it. All in all, the food and service, we got, was much below the expectation one could get from the reviews.

Came here for the first time on Friday 17th July 2020, having used the Babur takeaway many times I was expecting to see a similar menu but was surprised to see something completely different. We had vegetarian thali as a main dish between two of us and it was very filling, the food was amazing. The staff were very friendly and helpful and we will definitely be back to try something new.

Ordered this on Saturday night. Genuinely the best Indian takeaway I have ever had. Even came delivered in their own branded box. The food was really fresh and not greasy like you find a lot of places to be. Flavours were amazing. I especially recommend the Chicken Chettinad. Will definitely go back to again.

Returned after a year, at time of booking explained it was a special occasion, my partner's birthday and we really enjoyed our last visit - made a specific request to be seated where it would be more quiet due to the occasion. On arrival just before 7pm we were seated in the back end of the restaurant close to the kitchen on a table squeezed into the corner, the only table of 2 surrounded by large groups with lots of young children and baby's. It sounded like a zoo on a school holiday. The service was poor and impersonal.Table too small for the food we ordered, as a result our drinks spilled twice, waiting staff did not assist. We left after mains, no coffee or desert as it was a horrid environment to be in. Spoke to the owner towards end of our mains, he offered to sit us on the other side but why weren't we given a table there from the start? Service, listening and managing the environment of a restaurant is key. Awful night, a complete waste of time and effort. Previous Review 4 stars So nice to drive out of London for a highly reviewed Indian restaurant & we weren't disappointed. Lovely venue, quiet, not densley packed with tables - intimate and plenty of parking available. The masala fish starter & obergine was delicious, dahl makhni & Chicken biryani delicous - missing chilli heat but asked for some green chillies on the side. After such a fabulous meal I was disappointed not to find any indian deserts on the menu ? it put the whole meal out of sync for me. Indian deserts compliment and balance the the meal. Please bring in an option of authentic in-house prepared rasmali/gajar halva/firni etc. to complete this wonderful meal. Definitely somewhere to checkout. Thank you?

Went to eat there last Friday, with a few friends. Overall it is a tad expensive for what it is. Ordered the chicken chop. It tasted funny but I thought none of it at the time. Food poisoning ensued. Partner who shared my dish was ill too. The restaurant 's response has been along the lines of - this is the exception, we have a good rating and well, you ate the evidence, so we are all good/ totally not our fault. No refund was even offered. I see some other reviews about uncooked chicken so buyer beware indeed! There are nicer places elsewhere so won't be returning. A real gem of a place. Authentic dishes with an twist of originality. The 4 course taster menu is a delight with accompanying wine(s). Had to cave in and extend to 5 courses for dessert with liquor, what a good decision and a truly remarkable finish to a splendid meal/evening. Known about this place for 10 years wished i hadn't taken so long...to enter. Won't be long before we go back ☺️. On a par with famous chef names for me Gordon Ramsey etc. Super ? effort team!!

  • 4/5 Anne M. 3 years ago on Google
Mocktail was excellent. Popadoms and chutney are better than most. Starters were excellent. My vegetarian main (Phool) was overcooked unfortunately and the sauce tasted of hospital clinical or too much vinegar, I'm not sure. We booked and put a code on to receive a birthday discount (Babur is celebrating!) The bill at the end didn't have the discount and we had to ask. When the bill came back, I still don't think we got the full discount I'd expected. My husband forgot to add service charge so we perhaps ended up "quits" but do mention the birthday offer when you arrive and ask exactly what it is. Atmosphere in the beautiful marquee was really good, fresh air too.

High end 'indian' cuisine, excellent range of game and fish dishes, sensitive and well chosen wine list and some stonking cocktails. Try the currytini.

Poor service and takes its customers for granted. Our table was given away to those without a reservation despite us only being 10 mins late and re-confirming our reservation the day prior to the booking. Had to wait another 40 mins for a table which was an embarrassment to the guests we had brought. I would have understood if we were 20-30 mins late but after 10 mins is unacceptable and treats customers poorly.

Really good curry. They've got a takeaway menu of the basic dishes that you already know, but there's also a menu of more complicated (and more expensive) very delicious meals if you want something more interesting. You can get the restaurant ones delivered too.

Excellent venue and well prepared for social distancing. The food (I had the lamb) was good but don't go there hungry, because I thought the quantities are not generous. For dessert I had the fruit crumble, nice, but very sweet. The presentation of your meal is excellent and the service is very good. An overall pleasant experience 7/10. Meal for 2 with beer and dessert £70 .

We had an uncomfortable experience on Tuesday night(13th October) with the acting manager regarding the Early Bird discount. We booked online for 5:30pm having been tempted by an email from Babur. If we eat at 5:30pm they can sell the table twice. This discount was not honoured by the restaurant as we had not eaten enough food. We had poppadoms, 1 starter, 3 mains, 2 sides, 3 alcoholic drinks, naan. This is not the first time we have had difficulty understanding Babur's incentive emails. They have not honoured their offers to us on 2 previous occasions. This time we thought the acting manager had agree to adjusting the bill- we misunderstood him and no discount was forth coming. This is upsetting because the food at Babur is satisfactory. The management does not understand customer service.

Attending Babur is always a joy to behold, gourmet Indian-dining at its finest and we feel so fortunate to have it placed locally here in Brockley. The fact that it was nearly full in capacity on a Tuesday night during the Covid-19 pandemic tells you all you need to know about it’s reputation. Socially distanced tables and all of the waiting staff wearing face masks make you feel at ease. This is before mentioning the epic food! Tamarind lamb ribs for starters, slow-cooked venison curry for mains and a deliciously hand-crafted pomegranate margarita for afters was just what the doctor ordered. Such attentive waiting staff who cater to your every need. A nice touch at the end when we were given a free tin of their Assalam tea after I mentioned that there was a birthday in our party. The best Indian dining experience bar none, get yourselves down there for 35% off starters and mains before 30th September to celebrate their 35th birthday!

Food and wine excellent, service friendly and efficient, and a great atmosphere. We're infrequent visitors to the Babur, but have been going since the '90s. The food is wonderful - interesting and well presented starters, and main courses you won't find in any normal UK Indian restaurant - no 'base sauce plus chicken/lamb/tofu/prawns' options here. The food is prepared with care and attention, and is delicious. There are pescatarian, diary free, vegetarian and vegan options, and the menu is available online. The interior was revamped several years ago and is now bare brick, but has a warm intimate feel. We were lucky enough this time to be seated in the summer marquee, which reminded me pleasantly of a wedding reception. We were in the last sitting, and were served promptly, after a slight wait for a table. Starters are around £8, mains £16, wine from £24 upwards (check out the bin ends section of the wine list for good wine at good prices), and cocktails around £9. Covid precautions were in place, with staff wearing gloves and masks, and a sanitiser at the entrance, but restaurant dining is an inherently risky business if you want to avoid catching it (or infecting others). Chairs and tables were being wiped after use, but I'm not sure if the surfaces were getting the sanitiser for the minimum time the solutions need for them to work.

Having been recommended by numerous people to try this place out - we went as a family and the food was great. We were shown to our table by a friendly member of staff. The table was right at the very back - by the door to the kitchen. It wasn’t too bad but next time all add a note to my reservation to avoid that spot. We had to ask for a wine menu and weren’t given much time to decide our main course - but having said that it was 9pm and perhaps it was a busy night. There was a good atmosphere with lots of customers as almost every table was occupied. The meal arrived in good time and everyone enjoyed what they had ordered. It might be worth knowing that the ‘hotness’ of each dish is indicated by 1 or 2 tigers on the menus. We found that even the dishes without an indication were reasonably hot. I’d perhaps ask the waiter for the mildest dish next time, rather than relying on the indications on the menus. But that is just personal preference! Thank you for an enjoyable experience. For 5*’s - the waiting staff would have to be a little calmer and friendlier.

Excellent food and service. Ordered the non veg and vegetarian taster menu. Both tasted fantastic. Couldn't fault their food. Worthy of a Michelin star.

I have had Babur take away food for many years and this was my first restaurant visit. It did not disappoint. Very different menu and wonderful dishes. I will be back!

They only have a fixed lunchtime menu but it is very sophisticated. They packed up the main course as a takeaway which was thoughtful

Great food at an amazing price! All the dishes were good except one which was really weird - The Baby Aubergine side dish. Our waiter was amazing and attentive and gave our babies a little play pack. The only issue was we had a very bad start. Took us almost 15 mins to get seated in a very empty 6pm restaurant. We didn't make a booking and was told there was availability but we had to give up the table by 7.30pm which we said wasn't an issue. We were told to sit by the waiting area by the front desk, 1 min later someone came to bring us to a corner 6 seater table. We asked for 2 high chairs. They didn't come with it for 3 mins. Then we were told not to worry, we were getting a change of table to a much bigger space. 4 mins later we were brought to another corner in the tent area but were told to sit at a 2 seater table with the 2 high chairs next to the table but without any table space. We mentioned that it's a bit too squeezy and could we pls have a 4 seater at least. They took another 7 mins to sort out a table for us but giving us dirty looks the whole time. Just because of this, I don't think I will return. I felt extremely unwelcomed with the babies.

Just finished a 17th wedding anniversary feast from Babur. Simply delicious as always. So fragrant and expertly cooked. Plus the cocktails are excellent. Thank you.

This restaurant was quite a discovery. Best hidden gem in London! I could go on and on about how good this place is but I would still fall short to explain how superb and delicious its food is. Chef is innovative, precise and with great knowledge of Asian cuisine as every dish I’ve tried has never disappointed me. Well done on you guys and well done for sticking to one restaurant which delivers what only that one chef knows how to deliver. I live 1 hour away from you and never minded driving at least once every two month to try one of your dishes. Whoever has felt incentivised by this post I really hope you get to enjoy it as much as we do. Good luck!

Sea food was a Disappointment . 4. Dessert is not included in the buffet (Big surprise) 5. Chicken items were good .

Excellent experience having the anniversary tasting menu at Babur. Every course was delicious and the service was impeccable. The real stars of the show were the unique cocktails and crisp wine. Special shout out to to the birthday performer!

Absolutely love Babur! The menu is sophisticated and each time I've been I could not fault the food or service. The cocktail booklet (for it is a book and not just a one page menu!) is interesting with seasonal specials and the prices are also decent for the area. Could not recommend this restaurant enough!

I came alone and although the starter were nice, i was treated as though i was invisible. The tables of families around me were constantly cleaned and catered for, staff asking if all is good, while i was completely ignored, no one even making eye contact with me. The menu doesn’t feel genuine, they had no traditional curries such as madras. Popadom sauces are no exception. Although the food is nice, the menu is vague and didn’t explain that my expensive order includes only rice, no curry. Damn near £15 for a pot of rice.

I am a big Indian food fan but this was literally my best experience of Indian Food so far. Decoration and ambience was just right. All of the foods were outstanding with beautiful fusion touches. Their cocktails are very interesting and professionally done! My only criticism would be about the service which could be faster, kinder and more attentive.

Initial welcome after walking in was quite awkward when staff took their time discussing among themselves if they could accommodate us(place was practically empty). After we sat down, the service improved, and the food turned out rather good.

Can’t believe I’ve lived a 40 min walk from Babur for over a year and hadn’t tried it out! Dinner was fantastic, the saufiyani paneer was the best I’ve ever had, like eating flavourful, heavenly little clouds. (I also loved the Vegetarian Thali & currytini!)
