We came here for the second time, the food is really tasty. The portion size is more than enough for an average person. Sizzlers are a must try here. We’re going to come back for sure for the sumptuous food.

This Indian restaurant is a gem in the city! The food is consistently delicious, with samosas and mango lassi stealing the show. The burst of flavors is truly memorable. Yes, it tends to get crowded, but don't let that deter you. Be patient, and you'll be rewarded with a culinary experience that's worth every minute of the wait. This has become one of our top picks for Indian cuisine in the city.

I picked this restaurant, because I heard it has the best Indian food in the Urbana-Champaign area. I think the rumors are correct. The food is stellar. Amazing cooking and beautiful presentation. When you ask them to make food spicy, they can REALLY spice it up for you. But, you get what you ask for. And it's not a meaningless spice - it's incredibly flavorful and just adds to the dish. I can't speak enough of the service. Phenomenal service. Water jugs are left on each table and more water was provided when we were running low, without us asking. Our waiter continuously check on us, without being intrusive. And the {cook?}{owner?} does a great job taking your order and explaining each dish when you have questions. If he thinks soemthing will be too spicy for you, he lets you know. And when he saw we didn't completely finish a dish because of the level of spice, he asked if we'd like a milder one. A very VERY thoughtful cook who just wants people to enjoy the experience of eating there. Wonderful experience I would 100% recommend if you enjoy Indian food. Definitely would come back!

I ate many Cookies Indian restaurants in different states. This one is one of the best. Owner and workers were so great. They don’t bore you but don’t make you feel left alone either. Don’t hesitate to come if you’re not fun for spicy food, they have a lot of mild dishes too. We ordered both mild and spicy dishes, four different naans (flat bread) and loved all of them. We were so full and couldn’t order any dessert, I believe we missed a lot. I spoke with one of the workers and learned this is a family owned restaurant. That’s another reason to love and support.

Great service and good foods. The Samosa Chaat is excellent but the Cheese Naan is the the BOMB! It creates such unique taste with the Chicken Tikka Masala and the Butter Chicken. The cheese has a sharp taste but does not mask the curry. The foods are tasty and the spice level is perfect for me. I would consider myself having low to moderate tolerance. So, you might need to ask them to dial up the heat if you enjoy a good burn. Service was wonderful and attentive. The server told me it might take some time after ordering because they were busier than usual. The foods were served pretty quick despite that disclaimer. Even faster than some restaurant that didn't warn me. Overall, had a good time and will return.

Amazing food in the restaurant. Very authentic and amazing. Loved the food. The staff helped to explain all the dishes. One of the most authentic North Indian restaurants I’ve been to. The staff checked on table pretty often even though it was busy. If you want an amazing evening with family for amazing Indian crusines this is the place to be

Chicken Sekuwa is very delicious. It tastes crispy outside and tender inside. We ordered Shrimpsaag, Bhuna gosht, Lamb curry, and Chicken masala. Shrimp saag is my favorite. Bhuna gosht tastes better than lamb curry because the soup is thicker and with more flavor. Their naan is really good, especially the original flavor. Coconut kulf is my favorite, tasting like condensed milk with coconut.

Slow service, unorganized never checked on the table. Set down at 7 got food at 8:30.....what the heck..... they messed up with our order and owner's admitted. Not too authentic and mild flavors and not too spicy either. Absolutely terrible services in the industry.

Love the food there. Very often, I taste their foods. The lamb bhuna gosht seems to me super delicious. I tried almost all the items at Kohinoor. Today we tried "Kohinoor Combination grill" which seems to me the best among all their items. I would definitely recommend this dish and specifically explore this restaurant. In my opinion, this is the best Indian restaurant in the Urbana-Champaign area. All the staffs were very friendly and of good behavior.

Kohinoor catered our wedding and we couldn't be happier! The food was amazing, and the owner Ujjwal was great to work with. Everyone at our wedding was talking about how good the food was for days! Thank you Ujjwal & family <3

Great Indian food with reasonable prices and good portions. As we travel across the country we try to eat Indian as much as possible. This is one of the best Indian restaurants we have eaten at. We were able to order it with spice and it was great. Great chutneys and pakora. We will stop here each time we happen to be crossing the country.

Crazy what covid has done to the food industry. Places we love are now all competing more than ever with each other. The same Indian places I have picked up food from, the same workers, from other locations, leaving nasty reviews for another fellow businessman. This place is still great. Don't mind the negative falsified reviews. The food here is great. The owner is wonderful. The staff is respectful and all around a great experience in person or ordering in to home.

The prices of this place are on par with ambar Indian grill. But the main difference about this place is the quantity of size compared. The food of both places are unique of one another. Maybe due to the cultural differences of both places. But we ordered take out and over the food was amazing. Only issue we ran into was that they missed one of our order. But they delivered that missing order to us and gave us 2 more samosa than what we purchased. Overall amazing experience and restaurant.

This has to be one of my top 2 restraunts in United States serving North Indian food. I ordered Chana Masala and Baigan Bharta and I must say the taste reminds me of the food serced at Dhabas in parts of North western India. Just Nostalgic. Both the dishes were so balanced in their flavours. Baigan bharta is a dish that is very easy to mess up but they cooked it perfectly. Reminded me of the baigan bharta I had in one of the shops in Amritsar. To top it off there staff was very polite. A must if you visit Champaign

Delicious Indian food in Champaign area. Was passing by the city and thought of having lunch here. It’s a first come first serve. No Reservations. Bar available. We ordered Chicken Chilli, Lamb Ghost, Chicken Kebab Masala and Roti. Everything was delicious. Service was excellent. Tried the Indian beer - Flying Horse.

Came for lunch and we had a wonderful time. I had a spicy lamb dish (don’t remember the name, similar to curry) and my wife had a lunch set. The fried chicken we got for our toddler was very tasty as well.

The wait took an hour when they claimed it would take 5-15 minutes. The butter chicken and biryani chicken was overpriced for what you get. In addition, when asked for chicken 65, a spicy dish, they said they had a similar replacement, chicken 49. The chicken 49 was cheap orange chicken. Overall, I’d give the restaurant 3 stars, but the wait only made us hungrier just to be disappointed by the food.

I like their food, their Halal option. They can be rude, although on a personal level i like the folks working there. It is impossible for them to stick to a level of spiciness, they have no standards in that sense. I just ordered a biryani, which was soggy, unusual, but worse was extremely spicy (and i like spicy food), so much so that when they realized hot spicy it was, they decided to add a couple of spoons of white rice to relieve some of that spiciness. It still was hardly edible, and its not the first time, i'd say 1 in 3 times they mess something up. The place is generally good, but you never know how well your meal will be in any day.

We sat immediately, the service was prompt and polite, and the food was excellent. We had the Chicken Tikka and the Lamb Vindaloo. Both were melt-in-your-mouth tender and perfectly seasoned. Update: We have had Kohinoor a part of our restaurant “cycle” for a few years now. There has never been a sub-par experience. Out-of-town guests often request a repeat meal there when they return to C-U to visit.

Just like the jewel it is named for, one of a kind. We had been driving 3 days with our four young children. We were desperate for something other than fast food. Due to COVID we couldn’t dine in but Uttwal and his family gave our kids mango lassi and us chai as we waited for our food. What a welcome to Champaign, Illinois. Reminded us of the beautiful hospitality of Nepal and India. The food was delicious and we look forward to the next time we can visit Uttwal and Kohinoor.

The food is excellent & deserves 5-stars. The price of the food is expensive given the portion sizes for what we ordered. The service star is lower due to the lack of social communication with our family. It made our visit and the atmosphere uncomfortable. For example, our waitress did not greet us or say anything to us at all. She only handed us our food & walked away during our visit. She was able to serve us, just non-verbally, & I was not pleased with that service style at all. Another waitress took our orders, but did not say anything more to us until we left the restaurant. Another challenge with the atmosphere was the light in the restaurant. It was dark which posed a problem for us with regard to reading the menus. Despite the service & atmosphere, we would visit again or order carry-out.

Definitely a place to go to if you haven’t tried Indian food before. Best part of eating here was the friendly staff and the delicious food. I ordered the yellow dal and it was really good, especially since they could make it vegan for me. 10/10 definitely recommend this place

  • 5/5 Carolyn S. 3 years ago on Google
I used to always order from a different Indian restaurant that was closer to me but they had been cutting back on the amount of chicken in their chicken Tikka masala and how much rice they gave out so I was looking for another restaurant and tried Kohinoor and was so impressed. The veggie pakora was crispy even though I had gotten delivery. There was a generous amount of chicken, lots of places have less chicken and more curry since curry is cheaper but not Kohinoor. The container was packed with chicken to the top, you didn't have to dig around the curry to find it. In fact I always order extra naan to eat the extra curry with and I actually didn't need it although I was glad I got it since it was delicious. The generous amount of rice that came with the order was more than enough and the curry was nice and thick, not watery at all. Kohinoor is going to be my new go-to.

Good food. Cane out fresh but Service was considerably slow. Most places of they are running behind considerably would offer something in the interim like fries or some form of snack so as to not keep guests famished and starving while they wait. Might want to consider that.

Overall, one of the best Indian food options in town. Been here multiple times and everything I've had on the menu is quite good. You can choose your own spiciness level from 1-5 so that's helpful.

Kohinoor is becoming a fast favorite in our household. I joined a girlfriend there for dinner one night and came back within a week with my husband and a few more friends. The restaurant space is great and yields to both romantic or jovial evenings.

This hidden gem in Champaign is a must for anyone looking for authentic and delicious Indian cuisine! I took my Dad here for the first time a couple weeks ago and the atmosphere is calm and welcoming. Super friendly and smiling staff! My dad ordered Lamb Curry and I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala suggested by my waiter. We also ordered some naan and their sweet raspberry tea that is so addicting ? Omg y'all this is the most delicious authentic Indian food I've ever had! I actually preferred the Lamb Curry the best and the naan to dip (I'm a dipper) plus the rice left me feeling full and very satisfied, sooo yummy! If you haven't tried it, I highly recommend to! :)

Good ambience and service. Decent variety. Average food. I've had chicken biryani (in pic), which is passable. Spicy enough (if you go for the max spiciness) and satiating quantity. Naan-kulchas (Indian breads) are average and so is the curry prawns and fries rice. The samosas are good and the lemon prawns starter can be tried. I haven't tried all the options (which are a lot) but overall, the ambience and service will bump the rating to 3*

Kohinoor has been in the C-U area for more than 3 years and this restaurant is amazing. One of my favorite dishes that I always get is Bhuna Chicken Chili Masala. The service is always great too. I don't have anything to complain about. Also, don't forget the naan(bread)!

Food wasn't the fastest but it was well worth the wait when I bit into my lamb curry and garlic naan. Server was friendly and timely. I'm not sure what they do to their fountain soda but for some reason it's phenomenal.

Everything is amazing! Full of flavor and more than worth the cost. If you're still reading this, stop! Go order Kohinoor!

What a great experience! Love the food and the staff! It was worth driving 200 miles really. I wish they have a franchise nationwide! Amazing :)

I visited this place once and ordered chicken biryani. Turned out to be a huge disappointment. It was more like vegetable pulao and some chicken pieces. Vegetarian food was a slightly better but below expectations.

Good food, very bad management. I called up to order take out and they said to pick up my food after 20 min. After 20 min, I went inside and sat for 30 min waiting for my food. After 30 min, they called my name and told me my food will be ready after 20 more min. So I ended up waiting in the restaurant for 50 min. If it's going to take that long, they should let the customers know when they call not after they arrive on time. I should be able to decide if it's worth it to wait 1+ h for an order or not.

Not sure what all the good reviews are about. Some of the most bland and watered down Indian food I’ve ever had

I used to love this place but with the way they treat disabled customers, it is unacceptable to support this business.

What the heck happened to their food? Are they not an Indian restaurant anymore? We ordered veggie biryani and was told they only have fried rice, malai kofta and chicken 49 instead of the more popular chicken 65. So we thought, why not ? The fried rice and malai turned out to be the blandest we’ve ever tasted and the chicken can’t seem to make up its mind whether it should be a sweet and sour dish or general tsos chicken. The last time we went, the food was average and this time , just plain blah. Please hire a new Indian chef.

The people are very friendly. The price is decent but not cheap for a medium portion size (expect to pay around 20/person after tip). I've been twice now and the food is just ok. I think it's safe to say the best dish they have is good and worth returning to, but many of the dishes are not.

I believe I first ate here during the soft open and have never stopped. I practically live here. Every. Single. Thing. is phenomenal. Absolutely to die for are the samosa chat, special naan, tikka masala or korma if you are not a fan of spicy, vindaloo if you are, and the mango lassi! I've had indian food from Los Angeles, NYC, New Orleans, Boston - Kohinoor is the best in the country and the surroundings are as beautiful as the food is- flawless! Do not miss an opportunity to eat here!

Very good restaurant and we liked the tikka masala on the paneer tikka. Bhuna masala was okay but the naans were huge and value for the money! Looking forward to visiting again.

Excellent food !! We were en route Chicago and stopped by this restaurant. We ordered veg thali. Food was very tasty and fresh. Restrooms were very clean. Staff were very courteous. Will definitely recommend it.

The taste isn’t really authentic Indian. Garlic Naan is always my fave. Their onion raita doesn’t have any onions in it and the yogurt was very thick and gooey itself.

This establishment is one of the best i have been to in awhile. I love the atmosphere and the food is great. Anyone wanting to experience some authentic food with a laid back and warm atmosphere should visit

The restaurant ambience looks good. But coming to food, it's definitely not Indian food. I ordered Chili Chicken and Chicken Fried Rice. The Chili Chicken tasted as if it was dipped in Sambar and cooked. Coming to chicken fried rice it lacked flavor and tasted bland.

Had dinner at Kohinoor tonight. It was recommended to my wife and by our son, so we were encouraged to eat here. I'd say the food was good, but the service left alot to be desired. We waited almost an hour to get our food, "after" waiting 20 minutes to even be meet our waiter, "after" waiting 30 minutes to be seated. Could be that they were a bit overwhelmed by the events happening in area, but that's more of a reason to ensure you're prepared to handle the crowd by hiring more staff. My wife thought the food was excellent and the prices were reasonable. But I'd recommend you get it to go.
