I've had some amazing Indian food in my life and was excited to try this place. My hubby and I ordered the $65 dinner for 2. The soup had no flavor, the chicken appetizer tasted like chicken strips with some turmeric on them. The shrimp dish was ok. Not much flavor. The lamb and chicken dishes were better. The deserts were just ok. Small amount of food for the cost and just wasn't that impressed. If covid ever goes away and they bring the buffet back I may give it another try but without the buffet, we won't go back.

Excellent service and taste. Located minutes from UOW. Plenty of parking and seating for many. We had dinner, now planning on trying their buffet. Friendly staff. Can’t go wrong everything on the menu

Food was amazing & the service was even better. We were taking our 8yr old out for Indian food for the first time & she was resisting trying things. One of the staff came over & told her that one of the items was her personal favorite & that if she tried a little bit of everything they'd bring her ice cream. My daughter was beaming at the attention, tried it all, and got her free ice cream. It was so kind & above & beyond what they needed to do. They are the best!

Swagat is one of my go-to restaurants when I'm in Madison. Miss the variety of the buffet, but at least I get to enjoy leftovers! Last weekend, some family members and I ordered fish pakora, lamb vindaloo, lamb masala, lamb shahi korma, tandoori chicken, a variety of breads, and rasmalai for dessert for lunch. Everything was DEE-LISH-OUS, but I particularly enjoyed the fish pakora and lamb shahi korma. Gave the leftovers to my Madisonian relatives... this time.

BEST ONE!!!! It was a great experience of fine dine and best tastes served on the plate. If you are crossing Madison while you are on a road trip and want to eat good Indian food, this place is TOP best to dine with. We stopped there while coming back from Devils Lake Park trekking and ordered Paneer Kadhai, Malai Kofta and Butter Naan and these items tasted so authentic and fresh. Order came in quicker n hotter. If you love TEA I recommend it to drink one there, it tastes so good. We were impressed by the quality, courtesy and non pricy experience offered by the Swagat team.

Really excellent Tikka masala sauce for this great mixed grill platter with lamb, Chicken, shrimp. Vegetable curry dish was also spicy and flavorful. Garlic naan bread was excellent and had crispy edges. (Not chewy like some places.)

We used to really love this restaurant. It was one of the best (often ate here before the pandemic). Today we went here for the buffet. It was poorly stocked, to include no appetizers. Even had to wait for naan. Coconut soup was at the bottom, and there was a low variety of options. In general, the food had been picked over and not replenished. We were tempted to say something but didn't want to create a problem. The charge was $25 each plus drinks and tip. Oh yeah, and a fee for using a card too. For $70 dollars we could have done a lot better. We figured it would have been about $40 for the buffet. This was ungodly expensive for the poor pickings even with the state of inflation these days. This restaurant used to rate high with us. We will never go back.

Now that the buffet which, in and of itself collects harmful airborne pathogens has been closed due to covid this restaurant should seriously consider upping their game! - First: the decor was absolutely dismal. I was under the impression that Indians love their heritage and culture, this place sadly had absolutely nothing. Second: what was with the negligible portions, and for the price you are paying there were no leftovers, again sad.. And then there was the awful dinnerwear, it was something you would find at a gas station and the gas station would be offended, I was served a bowl of soup in something that looked like it could be leaching chemicals, yikes.!! Great presentation of food at a REASONABLE price, curb appeal and GREAT service along with beautiful ambiance ALL equal GREAT profits, and they wonder why they're barely making it when this restaurant has such potential, again sad.!

Ordered take out for a family gathering and was very disappointed. First I want to say I'm glad they were busy and thriving in these times! Overall the best part was that a larger order was on time. Now for the not great parts: When we ordered the food we asked for them to label everything, they only labeled a few things making it hard to tell what was what. Even based on the description they gave online and what the dish looked like I'm not even sure we got the right dishes. Next we ordered everything to be a medium heat, none of the dishes were the same heat level. I would only consider one to be medium while the rest were hot or hot+. They also forgot dishes, and this has happened before! The food overall was just ok. They give you about a 16oz container of a main dish with about 3-4 small chunks of meat and a small container of rice. With prices being around $17+ for a main dish it's a bit expensive for what you get (especially when you don't get what you ordered). I did contact them about my missing food and it's been a week with no reply, very disappointing costumer service. Overall we will be looking for a different Indian restaurant.

Like the lamb biryani they made, rice is moisture (most Indian restaurants I have been made dry biryani), lamb is juicy. I will recommend you get it next time. The service here is smart, they know what you want before you ask.

We went to dine in for dinner, the vegetable platter was decent nothing special about it, our curries planner and chicken Tikka masala were good with lots of flavor and the spice level for extra hot was actually spicy, overall we will definitely be going back to this restaurant to try other dishes

I recently moved from California and wanted to check the Indian restaurants in Madison. I visited Swagat at West Madison as they have a lunch buffet. The food is too bland and insipid. Very surprising that they can't even make proper coconut chutney for Uthappam. The mint chutney taste is something else which I never experienced in my life. The spread is good for non-vegetarians but not for vegetarians. A part of the taste is understandable since most Indian restaurants customize their recipes for the Americans. But the shocking part is that even the sweets (desserts) they served are bad. Upon that the buffet price is 25$. That's the costliest buffet I had on the US. Even in California it never crossed 20$ mark. I also had a bad experience in my previous visit where the portion size is too small for the price.

Lamb vindaloo has a severe lack of flavour, which is probably due to it being watered down. But even without the added water it probably still wouldn't of tasted good. So not impressed at all!

The food was pretty good but 4 star rating for the costumer service. The waiter was kind of rude with us. The best dishes were paper dosa and vegetable Manchuria.

We loved the ambience & yes of course the food was really tasty. We ordered Lamb seekh kabab for appetizers and settled for their Lamb biryani along with garlic naan with chicken korma as a side dish for main course... The quality of the food is topnotch & quantity is sufficient. Their menu is extensive, with so much to choose from surely we will be coming back for more .

I could not be more impressed with a local restaurant. The staff at Swagat are incredibly friendly. I went there for my first time today and they gave my one year old son a smoothie and ice cream for free because it's his birthday. And they brought our food out to us in the car. Absolutely above and beyond regarding to customer service! The food was incredible! They have gained a loyal customer forever.

My first visit in 10 years and still one of my favorite Indian restaurants, despite the fact that the fantastic lunch buffet was closed -- presumably due to Covid. One odd thing we found was the lack of any white meat pieces in the Tandoori Chicken. Still, everything was top notch, especially the Garlic Naan, and the service was spot-on.

  • 5/5 Jessica C. 3 years ago on Google
Food here is delicious, and the employees who assisted us with making a takeout order were so very kind. The garlic naan is so good! Looking forward to next time!

Good Indian food in the neighborhood. Like the Southern Indian items on the menu - those have a very distinct flavor that keeps you wanting more.

Best Indian food I've found in Madison. I've tried many other (Swad, Haveli, Curry in the Box, etc), and none really compare. The flavors are incredible and the meat is always tender. Staff is always friendly and just great in general. I've shamefully eaten here so many times they started learning who I was, and are always welcoming and friendly.

This spot is the one I always prefer. I go to a lot of restaurants but to this place I constantly return again and again. The crew is very affectionate and the food they cook is so tasty. I never miss an opportunity to have a nice dinner here. Highly recommended.

  • 3/5 Prasanna P. 3 years ago on Google
Little overpriced, Buffet options are good, but most of the food is toned down to mild or bland spice levels. Majority of the dishes taste similar due to usage of same spices . Too much of infusion, with cheese and curd with Spices don't give a good feel. Great Ambience good hospitality. Good to visit once in awhile with colleagues if you want a toned down version of Indian food.

I used to like getting lunch from here. Friendly service and delicious food. Suddenly this guy who answers the phone starting sounding like he hates callers and has no time to take my order, always and every time gets my order wrong. I asked him once to give the phone to someone else and he claimed he’s the only person there! So rude, and a lier. Their food also started to go down the drain, no more nuts, the flavor is switching slowly and progressively from aromatic to just hot! I finally found a better indian restaurant very close to them. I don’t recommend

  • 2/5 Sherwin N. 3 years ago on Google
Food is overpriced for the quantity and quality that you get compared to local competitors, and it frequently appears that they "water down" or skimp on their food, particularly their naan, rice, sauces, and yogurt dressing in the two times I have visited. If you inquire about the obvious lack of food, they WILL get defensive and refuse to correct the problem. With so many great Indian restaurants available in Madison, I can think of not one single reason why I would voluntarily choose to return to Swagat. Highly recommend Dhaba or Maharani instead.

Quite possibly the worst dining experience in my life. And I am 71 years old. I love Indian food and am at a loss to understand the rating for this place. The food was bland- not flavorful, not authentic at all. The service was absolutely horrible- I would waive at a server and they would look away and walk away. We never got any fresh bread, the food in the buffet was old and replaced far and few times in between- it looked gross in the buffet containers half solidified and burnt from sitting in the warm containers for too long. My wife is black (I am white) and did they ignore her! They would not even look at her. The servers did not sound like they had any manners or any sense of how its not okay in this country to treat people different based on their race. There was no supervision- couldnt see a manager or owner around. There was a young man with his hair dyed partly blond- he was strutting around like the governor of the state and was extra rude. Every experience and interaction from the moment we walked in to the time we left was terrible. Needless to say, I am never going back.

Being myself an Indian I know how certain foods should taste like. Chicken modular, uncooked meat, very few pieces of chicken, watery gravy.Couple of times a year apart same problem.Previous time more veggies and less chicken in the mogulai dish.Wondering if it was veggie or chicken mogulai LOL

Went here for the lunch buffet with the family. They had a good selection on the buffet...including samosas, chicken biryani, chicken tikka masala, paneer, fish and naans....and much more. They also had a small dessert buffet as well. The food was good and the whole family enjoyed it—even my kids ages 2, 6, and 8. The atmosphere was nice. Lots of space and it was clean. The wait staff kept refilling our waters and were attentive. My only complaint is there is only 1 single bathroom for the whole restaurant. My kids had to wait awhile to use it...I suggested leaving the restaurant for our next destination to use the bathroom. Overall, it was a good place to eat.

The food and choices were only ok. There weren't as many vegetarian options as I thought there would be. I read a review about this place in a magazine noting it's vegetarian options. My husband and I wanted a nice leisurely lunch but we felt rushed almost as soon as we got our first plates. We got there at 1:50. Not long after we arrived, I overheard one server making comments to another server that they closed at 3:00. It seemed like his comments were directed at us. We knew the place closed at 3 so we weren't planning on staying longer but we usually rush through meals cuz we have kids and grandkids. No kids so wanted to slow things down. Much of the food on the buffet was old. It didn't look like it had been replenished since the lunch rush. The fish was empty so my husband asked if he could get some. Again, we arrived before 2. They did add more fish but it was awkward because it didn't seem like they wanted to add more to the line. At 2:45 our server asked my husband if he wanted anything more to eat. He said no. He didn't ask me. Immediately he and the other servers started taking all of the items off the buffet. It wasn't even 3. It was also expensive for limited options and lunch at $14.50, drink not included. We won't be going back. Edible food but nothing special, overpriced and unwelcoming environment.

One of my Indian friend take me to this restaurant last month. And now i am à big fan of this Indian cuisine restaurant. They have great number of Indian dishes in their menu. The also have some healthy dishes in their list. They definitely deserve more than 5 star.

Amazing! Absolutely amazing. As soon as I walked in, the aroma was enticing! The food surpassed my expectations of the flavor, even after being lured in by the aroma. The choice of food was authentic and diverse. Plenty of options for a vegetarian or a carnivore, and the many soups and sauces added to the meal. Spices, PERFECT! This place was decorated with ‘Best of Madison’ awards, without missing a year in the last decade; and I can see why! If you ever get a craving for Indian food, even if watching something on TV that makes you crave Indian food, this is the place to indulge that craving; you will not be disappointed. I never had to ask for a refill, it was always provided before necessary; and my table conversation wasn’t interrupted while my refill was supplied. The staff was friendly, clean and very attentive. I have other reviews on google, and I make it a point to speak up when a business deserves it; good or bad. My advice here: give this place a shot!

Food was above average for Madison area. We had their weekend lunch buffet. Food was flavorful and not muted like some other Indian restaurants in the area, which was a plus to me. Bathroom can use some cleaning.
