Food is 4/5 (on taste) but ambience and presentation is 5/5. If you're celebrating, it's a place to book. Also it's apparently one of the oldest Indian restaurants in London serving since 1926. Drinks are not bad either and much more reasonably priced than some of the other bars in the area. Overall good value for money for a fancy dinner (or lunch!).

As a Michelin starred fine dining establishment with a lot of history, the food is only a part of the experience. In terms of ambiance and decor it's quite tastefully done, and you get a sense for how much history the restaurant has. As for the food, it's definitely good, but I was expecting just a little more considering the price and prestige. As some others have mentioned, I was also a little disappointed that there's a dress code mentioned on the website but not particularly enforced.

food is just a small fraction of the dining experience at veeraswamy. the food was delicious, flavour in every bite but the portions were small for the price. my main problem with the restaurant was that i gave my coat to be put in the cloakroom but when i received it back there were marks all over the arm as if it had been dropped on a dirty floor. (photo below) highly disappointed as this ruined my whole experience. lastly we had a few waiters but one of the ones that came to clean our table made so much noise and dropped food off the plate without noticing. unprofessional for a place with so much reputation. i was also shocked to see very few people following the dress code on their website - some people were in hoodies and sports shoes?

We dined on a Sunday evening and the place was full so booking is definitely recommended. The restaurant is located upstairs (there is a lift) and has a really homely atmosphere. Staff were really friendly and attentive and the food was delicious. We opted for the tasting menu which was £75 pp (all table needs to have this) which for a Michelin star restaurant I think is reasonable. Food was outstanding, every course was delicious and the portions were perfectly sized. Rice and naan breads are plentiful and they are happy to bring more if required. Highly recommended

We took my parents to celebrate their 80th at this establishment but sadly it didn’t live up to our expectations. The decor was far from what is advertise on website and looked more like any other Indian restaurant. The service was chaotic, staff not attentive and generally handing around the bar too much. The table wasn’t cleaned after each course or of any mess made. What was the most disappointment, was the food. When our starters came out, many of the dishes were Luke warm at best. Same was said about the main course. As mentioned by other reviewer, the wine was serviced warm, despite asking the staff to ensure the wine was well chilled. In my opinion, the experience doesn’t warrant its 1 star status and they take our feedback on board.

Veeraswamy is an Indian restaurant in London, located at 99-101 Regent Street. It was opened in 1926 by Edward Palmer, a retired Indian Army officer and the grandson of an English general and an Indian princess. It is the oldest surviving Indian restaurant in the United Kingdom.[2][3] In its early years, Veeraswamy served Anglo-Indian cuisine, but in recent decades, based on the popularity of authentic Indian food in the UK, has served a menu of regional Indian cuisine, including dishes from Punjab, Lucknow, Kashmir, and Goa. Edward Palmer used the name E. P. Veeraswamy for his food business and the book; Veeraswamy was his grandmother's family name.

Great place! Very delicious food! Dish that stands out in my opinion is patiala shahi raan - lamb shank wrapped in a thin flatbread and cooked for 6 hours accompanied with some curry on the side. Probably one of the best lamb dishes I’ve ever tried, very succulent and soft, good combination of spices. Also, really liked chicken momos, which was some kind of Indian dumplings. Lamb chops were cooked perfectly, though I think proper knife for steaks/meat should be served for them, otherwise its really hard to cut them. Raita was a bit too sweet in my opinion… Service was good and very attentive, though I think our waitress was a novice and made some mistakes a few times, didn’t have info on some dishes, which is ok in general, but not what I expected from a Michelin starred restaurant. Overall very good experience, would definitely come back!

First time here and it was fantastic. Delicious food and attentive service without being intrusive. Restaurant decor was very nice. Really enjoyed the sharing starter platter - gilafi sheek kebab, tandoori green prawns and angara chicken tikka all of this tasted wonderful. Chicken biryani was superb it was cooked fresh and layered with chicken. Champaran Lamb Rogon Josh was very good and had the right spice and heat. Staff kindly gave a complimentary celebratory dessert (chocolate ganache) and we also ordered the coconut and jaggery brûlée and masala chai. Coconut and jaggery brûlée was divine. Can’t wait to come back again and try the prawn curry and lamb chops.

Went here to celebrate our anniversary. Amazing experience and super delicious food. We got the tasting menu which was very filling and delicious. The highlight was the chicken Tikka starter - which even though I've had it a million times at various places - this one was the most tender and flavorful chicken I've ever had. Will come back for sure.

Lovely welcome by the staff with quick and friendly service. The staff were wonderful, answering questions about the menu and also offering helpful suggestions. The menu was amazing - we had the lunch menu and I was surprised by the number of different options available - similar lunch menus usually offer two or three choices but this had five or six per course not including the vegetarian selections. The food was really good: beautiful presentation and deep rich flavours. Quality really good as was portion size - perfect. Desserts were great, cocktails were strong and the wine was fine. Overall: we had a very nice time, great food, lovely service and good value for money.

Lovely setting, gorgeous food! I had to take a star off because the website says that all lamb and chicken is halal, but when I asked the waiter I was told that the only lamb suitable was the seekh kebabs and the chops.

Had a enjoyable Saturday lunchtime meal. Nice flavours, great to have an Indian menu with dishes you don't recognise ensuring you're trying something different. Good cocktails rounded the meal off nicely

An exquisite dining experience. The ambience- interior design, decor and music- is all around very pleasant and definitely high-end, so not suitable for young children. The food is delicious and beautifully presented and the service impeccable! Despite the high price, I would definitely recommend for a special occasion, as London has a wide range of amazing Indian to offer.

The food was absolutely amazing and flavourful. The atmosphere was great and staff was quite helpful. The location is very convenient. Although the price was a little higher it was completely worth it. The was a range of food choices. The only problem was that the portions were quite big so no one at the table finished their meal completely. Suitable for older children and vegetarians.

The service is impeccable. Rather than providing an overwhelming menu with average cooking, the quality of the food certainly meets Michelin standards like the service. Decor is easy on the eye, and if you get a window seat, you get to see Regents Street and the world go by. The set menu gives options if you want a little bit of everything, though if like me, you are intolerant to coconut milk and dairy, best avoid that and go a la carte. We went for my mum's 60th. We'll certainly be interested in trying the other restaurants within the group.

One of the best Indian restaurants I’ve tried (so far) and definitely one of the best (one star) Michelin rated restaurants I’ve ventured into. Quality of ingredients: 5/5 from the cocktail garnishing to chicken breast cuts; Flavour: 5/5, everyone mouthful is a delight of Indian creativity; Ambience: 5/5 very serene with a blend of British-Indian decor, and a lovely breeze on a warm summer day; Drinks: 5/5 - far better than any cocktail bar I’ve been to; Price 5/5: let’s face it - this is a Michelin star restaurant and they could be charging much more extortionate prices like other contemporaries; Quantity 5/5: I still have a full belly from lunch (well into dinner time); Location 5/5: this is important as it adds to overall experience- it’s right on Regent’s St; and Service 4/5: waiters were incredibly polite, speed of service was impeccable, maitre’d and designated waiter would check from time to time (and are lively conversationalist), and had good recommendations. Only docked 1 star as they initially offered a rather lousy seat (even when venue wasn’t packed), and some times one of the junior waiter wasn’t very attentive - but both were of course rectified by maitre’d who was great. Overall- a foodie’s paradise, and a must visit establishment if you’re hot on Indian food. Got the set menu, and topped up with a main course between 2 people. The mango lassi is a must - and 1926 + the Spring Cool were excellent.

A disappointing experience considering this is London's oldest Indian restaurant and has a Michelin star. Appetizer was good but my entree was not only boring but had no flavor, some of the dishes had no spices while one of the curries was overwhelmed by chilli pepper. As for service, another disappointment, no attention to fill the water for many minutes. Here I'm sweating because one of the dishes was way too spicy and there is no water while the servers where hanging around chit chatting among themselves

As someone who is Indian and travelled to india on numerous occasions. I was fed up of going to going to all the “Gourmet” Indian restaurants in London that classify themselves as authentic but just do not hit the spot. Finally, after visiting Veeraswamy, I can highly recommend a fine dining Indian restaurant that lives up to its standards. The food was nicely presented, with decent portion sizes, amazing traditional flavours with good service. Prices are high, but that’s what is expected from a place like this. The taste lives up to the standards. I would highly recommend the Chicken Makhani Au Vin, and the Non Veg Platter.

Had my birthday celebration here. The dress code is formal. The food and the ambiance is great! We ordered many things to share. The restaurant is big,and has a few private dining rooms as well. The waiters and waitress are all friendly and welcoming, just the efficiency of the service could be improved a bit. We brought our own birthday cake and the restaurant gave me a mini cake as complimentry for birthday girl.

Tried this place for a work dinner. Excellent location, tucked away in the heart of Oxford Circus. The venue builds on many years of experience in the industry and you feel you’re in safe hands. The staff are very professional and attentive to your needs and order specifics. The service is timely. The food is quite delicious, Indian fusion with modern touch. I was less impressed about the deserts though. The atmosphere is quite dim and could use if some light music in the background.

The restaurant's staff could learn how to treat their customers with respect devoid of racial biases. We were a party of 2 and went there for dinner. After taking our coats and bags, we were shown to our table. I requested the middle-aged Indian man who escorted us to our table if we could be given a table with street view as I clearly saw one such table vacant. This person rudely said that he could not give it to us as it was booked. I knew there was no provision for reserving a specific table during the reservation process. This man was clearly bluffing for some reason. He also passed a snide remark saying that one of us could see the street from the table given to us if not both. Immediately after, a white couple came in and made a similar request of being seated in the street-side table. This same person seated them there in a friendly manner. This made me wonder if I was discriminated based on my skin color. This man probably perceives fellow brown skins as inferior customers. I wanted to have a few words with man but refrained from doing so as I did not intend to ruin my evening. The food was of decent quality.

This is an upmarket Indian restaurant with high quality food and service to match. There is a good range of starters - crab cakes were delicious- and the portion size was fine. Mains are well served , delicately spiced , and again portion size is fine . Try the halibut which was really well cooked and flavoured with the side of pineapple curry ! Tables are well spaced and most have good location views inside and out. Service was friendly and helpful? Prices are high but so is the quality

They managed to fit 10 of us in at the last minute at 10pm. Wonderful service and fantastic quality food. This is certainly at the high end of Indian dining (hence the Michelin star) but isn't pretentious. One diner described it as the best curry they've ever had!

This restaurant has the best Indian food I have ever tasted. Excellent, quality service from friendly staff in a very pleasant atmosphere. Some would say it is expensive but, as the old saying goes, you get what you pay for. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone with a love of Indian cuisine. If you do visit, make sure you sample the pineapple curry, unbelievable flavours.

I think the dishes are well prepared but as a fine dining Indian restaurant, I just feel the cooking is lacking something special. It lacks the vibrancy of the traditional cuisine so fine dining translates more to milder flavours than special flavours. Service is very attentive and accommodating. I just wanted it to feel unique and astonishing.

Very average food for a 1 starred restaurant, unfortunately, the main course let us down as it came out cold. We decided to go for the mixed vegetarian platter. This comes in the small portions giving you a great idea of what the full size portion would be. The food lacked salt, spice and felt like the curries were heated up briefly before being served into thier individual portions. I have rated this experience three stars on the basis that the starters were fantastic, service was average. The big kick in the teeth was when I mentioned the temperature of the food, the duty manager waived the service charge, which is optional and something that I would have not paid. If you wish to experience a much classier, sophisticated Indian dining then there is plenty of choice around central London. To give anyone an idea of the meal and cost, we had 1 glass of wine, shot of whiskey, two individual starters, popodums, one veg platter, two individual naans all for £89.00. The Naans we had were "Masala chilli" which was a massive let down too! Not a great birthday meal, probably will not be back. A real shame. I hope this review helps anyone considering this restaurant.

Delicious Indian food and great ambience! I organised a booking here for a New Years dinner with my family, and we all loved it! It was the first time we all went to the restaurant and everyone was very impressed, the restaurant was very nostalgic inside and it took you back! The atmosphere was perfect, very sophisticated and we got to have a conversation, we were not rushed and the staff were very accommodating of the 2 vegetarians and the fact we had to leave at a particular time as we were going to the theatre after. The cocktails and mocktails were delicious, especially the Mirchi Martini (with vodka, chilli and lychee) - pictures. We were well advised by the staff, so the portions worked out perfectly, the chicken lollipops were so crispy, the paneer in the vegetarian crescent platter was made in house and so soft, and the srikhand cannoli (a definite must try) and chocolate ganache were as good as they look in the pictures. I highly recommend going here for a celebratory dinner!

I made a friend in Ladies while waiting for about 10 minuets only to find both toilets been taken by members of staff having phone call conversation while guest been waiting to use toilet facilities. They didn't wash hands afterwards.

Very dubious 5 star reviews. Unless you haven’t dined outside of the most basic high street chains, this restaurant begs the question, why bother? Well, you may want to try the green prawn starter for £11 per prawn! Lavishly and unnecessarily dressed with a concoction of what must have been the most luxe of green spices to try and justify this over dressed starter! Food is mediocre at best, as is the service. Try it once if you really want to waste £75+ per head, rather than a better quality experience at Dishoom. Masala Zone or Darjeeling Express, all within a stones throw.

A great Indian high end restaurant with good food. The service was of a high standards and extremely friendly staff too. They were able to give us a table 45 minutes before our actual sitting which was extremely kind of them. The food was of good portion sizes with good authentic indian taste. The only downside was that all other customer's were provided with a hot wet towel before and after their meal, not sure why, it would have been nice to be treated similarly to other customers. But otherwise a good restaurant to visit if you're around the area.

I have eaten here a few times due to convenience & ambience is nice. I think the decor of the restaurant is lovely and service is excellent but food is not special enough to be michelin star or luxurious. I think food is overly spicy & restaurant smells of curry from the minute you walk in which isn’t nice. I think the restaurant is very much 4* standard rather than 5*, very nice place but not spectacular!

Fantastic service, and food. We found the staff to be friendly, helpful and efficient. The timing of course delivery to the table was well considered and as a result we never felt like we were being rushed, which also allowed for us to fully enjoy our time within the restaurant. Our food was excellent as we expected from such a revered restaurant, with nothing but praise from the table for the wide variety of dishes we had ordered. From a Covid safety perspective all staff were wearing face shields at all times and guest temperatures are checked before entering the venue, also hand sanitising stations are posted at multiple locations and diners are spread safely across the restaurant.

Very good food (if you like indian food). Location with history and still good service. Not the cheapest option around. Of you can book the eplace you will enjoy the tasty indian food on the first floor with windows overlooking Regent Street

First of all the internal decor of Veeraswamy is just breath taking. The eclectic light pieces and furnishings transport you back to an era fine dining and sophistication. This is only surpassed by the food that is served. The aromatic dishes just transport you to Asia with every course. As you watch the hustle and bustle of Regent Street pass you by. Veeraswarmy is truly a jewel in London's culinary crown.

Amazing food. Absolutely sensational. Fantastic customer service. This restaurant has been open for so long because of its authenticity and flavourful Indian food. Highly recommended to anyone visiting London

Honestly a bit underwhelming…the service is excellent, the ambiance is great, but the food is average for a Michelin star restaurant and the oldest Indian restaurant in UK. I had the tasting menu and each dish was good, but nothing mind blowing for the price they charge.

The position is convenient and the environment is romantic. The waiter was very professional and helpful when providing suggestions on food, and made it just enough for four. This lamb is really tender and tasty, but with a crispy skin.

The food was amazing and very fairly priced. There were many great options for vegetarians, omnivores, and pescatarians. The drinks were delicious. My husband and I loved the service and the relaxed environment. I really recommend the pineapple curry - I’ve dreamt about it!

I first went to Veeraswamy in 1982 then again in 2005 and still remember it. Do when I read that they have 1 Michelin star, I had to go again. I reserved and went there with my brother. We ordered Raj Kachori and chicken Tikka for starters, then Roast Duck Vindaloo, Lamb Rogan Josh and dal with steamed rice and ended with cucumber Raita. OK, let me start, the Kachori was unreal, the mixture of flavors blended so well that it left my mouth screaming for more, the mixture of ingredients was so nicely balanced and flavorful that I had to meter myself not to finish my portion. The Tikka was also very tender and nicely spicy but not too much, however, it had something missing from it and not until I had the duck Vindaloo did I realize that the spice mixture was very very unique. The duck was another story. Vindaloo is my favorite Indian dish which I love the taste and the heat. The duck had some heat but had an amazingly correct Vindaloo flavor, this to me was delicious, the duck was cooked beautifully, soft and well rendered fat and just lovely but with the Vindaloo spices which made it a unique dish... Loved it. The lamb was also amazing and like the duck was spiced to perfection but in a different way than any other Indian restaurant while maintaining the identity of this Kashmiri dish. The dal was excellent and the rice and Raita sublime. The rice was the perfect vehicle to carry the Vindaloo and Rogan Josh flavors. We were full and could not order dessert unfortunately but what a feast of flavors. Now you have to understand that I love Indian food but always suffer the aftermath of sweating the spices. Veeraswamy is different, the food I had, had all the right flavors and spice but not of the aftermath, so I was delighted. What an amazing place, I remember it from 1982, 2005 and now since I visited London in 2022, it has grown and developed into an experience I will repeat anytime I come to London hopefully not to far distant as before. Go there and enjoy.. Well deserving it's Michelin star...

What makes this restaurant so special isn't just that they elevate Indian cuisine to spectacular levels (and, wow, they do!) it's also the warmth of the staff every time. Highly recommended for a special occasion, and I keep going back!

We had a very nice dinner, the food was good, there is a large selection and the portion size is more than enough. Drinks are great as well. The service was a ok, but didn’t really help us with our order. And the overall price is very high.

Five stars just for the fact that the chicken has saffron in it, an incredibly rare find when so many other restaurants claim to use the ingredient without actually doing so. Service was good and friendly and I dug their take on gulab jamun as well 👍🏽

This is the real deal. Incredibly friendly service. You really feel taken care of and at home. Astonishing dishes filled with flavor. Variety and subtlety. Layers. Not just heat. A family atmosphere filled with warmth and smiles.

What a fantastic gem of a place. Went here for my 50th birthday before a trip to the theatre. The food was outstanding and the staff absolutely fabulous. Only negative was that we didn't have time to stay longer. Will definitely return should we visit London again! highly recommend

Have you ever had a meal that was so incredibly moving, you cried? The emotions that the food here illicit are undeniably powerful. If I could give this culinary kingdom more stars, I would! Everything I had was beyond words. Go, just GO!

last year on out annual visit to London we eat in the sister restaurant Chutney Mary's so this year we tried out the "Oldest Indian Restaurant in London" - we'll we were not disappointed - it was very good indeed, but because of the size o the group 7 in total we were only able to get a table for 21.00 which was a little late for me to he honest. However in saying that the food was just top drawer, very good indeed, I had the "Duck" as a mail course it was very good indeed, and the Lobster as a starter was equally as good, - I'd have to say the atmosphere was a little dull, but we made up for it - will be back when I've tried some more restaurants on my bucket list
