Tonka comes with a big reputation and it doesn't disappoint. Creative and very well executed fusion dishes with an Indian influence. The tandoori trout was incredible. A great food experience with excellent wait staff, that makes this restaurant a must go.

An incredible journey of different flavours over small but perfectly sized dishes. These dishes are small with exception of the mains, intentionally. Designed for sharing or to have several. The service was second to none with attentive but not invasive wait staff. Recommendations were offered based on pallette and dietary requirements. A wide variety of drinks including several non alcoholic ones or drinks that could be modified to noon alcoholic. The venue itself is light, white and well insulated. Overall a great experience and a true culinary journey of you're looking for fine food. 🍛🍷🍹😎

Quite an underwhelming experience, I found it too expensive for the portions & the quality of the food. I would recommend if the fusion cannot improve the classic then don't do it. Not recommended, I would stick to originals.

🦀 Spanner Crab Betel Leaf 🐙 Deep Fried Baby Octopus 🍗 Mustard Chicken Tikka 🐟 Trout, Wombok Salad 🍤 Kerala Prawn Curry 🐑 Avani’s Lamb Curry 🫓 Naan Tonka is a modern Indian restaurant located in one of Melbourne’s most iconic laneways, Duckboard Place. It is co-owned by chef Adam Dsylva, has been featured on Masterchef and since opening have received The Age Good Food Guide’s ‘Hat Award’ every year. The ceiling installation ‘Drift’ by Melbourne artist Naomi Troski was designed to hit the brief “the magic of India” and is just simply stunning. The whole restaurant is the perfect balance between casual and formal. The service is faultless and the attention the detail was impressive. Constantly topping up our water, offering more drinks once we finished them and even clearing, cleaning and resetting the table with fresh plates and cutlery after every single dish. Definitely start with a Cucumber Margarita, I could’ve ordered one after another it was so good. All of the entrees were delicious, the (spicy!!) Octopus is a must and although they are small, I recommend the Spanner Crab Betel Leaf, Chicken Tikka and the Trout as they were all bursting with flavour. Although not mentioned on the menu, you can actually get half serves of selected curries. They were however, my least favourite dishes. The Lamb Curry lacked flavour and didn’t fall apart. The Prawn Curry personally wasn’t to my taste at all but my partner loved it! The naan was a good side. I feel like I have had better much curries from my local Indian restaurants at a fraction of the cost. I would still come back and try a different main or just stick to the first half of the menu! ⭐️ 4/5 (Great)

We've wanted to come here for a long time and finally the day arrived. We were a little early but pleasantly greeted and soon seated with menus and water after audio issues were resolved. We made up our own feast from the large menu. Highlights included the: 1, Pani Puri - beautifully presented, crispy balls with potato, mung bean paste, chutney and an aromatic water we poured into the parcel. The spices gave this opener a little bite which served to wake up the taste buds. 2, Deep fried baby octopus on a bed of harissa - crispy with flavours bursting in the mouth and our favourite of the day. 3, Confit duck with lightly pickled purple cabbage and a chestnut puree that harmonised soothingly with the tender, slightly pink flesh. We also had the Tandoori paneer, Kerala prawn curry and the Carrot halwa with cream cheese ice cream dessert. The paneer was delightful, the curry had too much bite for me and the dessert was intriguing. Entry is from a dingy and dank alleyway but once inside the spacious interior looks comfortable and elegant. At the back are huge windows opening out to Flinders St, infusing the space with natural light. Service was friendly and on point throughout. A memorable experience to a memorable place.

I have never had a chance to eat tohere, but the first time I heard about them was in the (in)famous butter chicken incident where a man from Werribee drove to the CBD to pick up their Butter chicken during Stage 3 COVID lockdown and was fined $1600. Instead of condoning this man's irresponsible behaviour, Tonka chose to find this man through Instagram and announce that they would like to deliver him a few curries to soften the blow. Totally irresponsible and cheap publicity behaviour from the restaurant

Well its Indian cuisine but not Indian.. Its sort of Modern Indian Fusion. You will have a nice experience if you don’t keep your thoughts on Indian cuisine. Even the interior is warm and artistic. We enjoyed our visit and will surely try again.

Birthday dinner for my wife and our son. The lights were either broken, seriously dimmed or on power-saving mode, but a relatively minor issue. Service was fast, efficient, courteous and friendly - drinks and food. Prices aren't low, but the food is excellent, and the curry portion sizes are huge. We couldn't finish our lamb curry and butter chicken, though we did have lots of appetizers. Dishes aren't spicy at all, so if you like a hit of spiciness, ask for chillies on the side. Huge drinks selection as well, though only one international beer(?). Great ambience and food. Definitely go. Have photos, but they're useless in the poor light and with my phone.

Have been to a lot of Fine Dining Indian Restaurants, the staff and service is good, therefore, 3 stars but the quality, taste and presentation of food is not the best. Good-looking plating and the restaurant’s ambiance is nice. But for someone who’s craving for taste of India, I would not recommend - its so called Modern Indian/ Western food.

As a group of 7, We couldn't get the feed me menu as 1 could not partake. We ordered a large range from the menu and enjoyed the majority. Our favourite was the trout, our least favourite was the cauliflower. We tried the desserts and they did not meet our expectations. We were quite critical of the food simply because of the prices. None of us felt any of the food was amazing, well prepared yes, fresh and full of flavour yes, textures, sauces, spices and balance yes. The king fish was drowned in chilli sauce and the butter chicken had a beautiful silky sauce but very little chicken. We all had a good time. The restaurant was busy, our staff member was delightful and did explain the portion size. So we were prepared. A nice night

The location is a perfect Melbourne laneway setting with a nice view into flinders street and the hospitality is good. Coming to food it is Indian food elevated to be sophisticated and classy. The dishes have good flavors but given the quantity the prices are a but high. Loved the butter chicken the flavor was spot on

The foods and the atmosphere are fantastic. Six of us came here and we really enjoyed our time. The staff was very friendly and attentive. The butter chicken was delicious and the prawn betel leaf was my favourite. We really had a great night tasting all these modern Indian foods.

Food was excellent.... Timing for service was out, we had to rush to eat and for dessert had to change table. Felt like we were pushed out. Luckily team members tried to compensate.

Every dish was packed with an explosion of flavour, was well-balanced, and was absolutely delicious. My personal favourites were the deep-fried octopus (oh the sauce!), the duck curry (perfectly cooked duck!), and the chocolate dessert (many different chocolates from chocolate sorbet to chocolate buds, but was extremely well-balanced!) Overall, a brilliant and delicious restaurant that gives your tastebuds an rollercoaster ride through Indian flavours!

This is a modern Indian restaurant and the food is impeccable with fabulous service. I guess my comment is on taking the two star from the food was that if you are goi g to charge what you do now do you elevate Indian food even more and push the boundary. Adding a micro flower to the pani puri is not elevation at $15 for a puri..: it’s not bad and the flavours are balanced but does not make me crave for the flavours which I can get elsewhere. The service is fantastic, the staff friendly and simply adorable atmosphere. Just not sure I would come back for the food

Overall a lovely experience but a few things were a bit disappointing. Really lovely restaurant and atmosphere - good for a special occasion. Scotch fillet and potatoes were fantastic, as was the tostada starter. Butter chicken was fine - good quality and nice smokiness and heat but I’ve had better takeaway! Needs to be more rich and buttery. And at $49 it was underwhelming. Desserts were a let down. Ice cream sandwich was icy and the cookie had a very burnt strange taste. $10 for one small galab jamun is a bit crazy. Service was nice enough. We were on a high table next to the wine station and the wait staff at one point were chatting away and having their personal conversations, stood there right next to us while we were dining. Pretty unprofessional for a restaurant like this.

Service was vgood. Food was extremely average and just not justifiable at that price point. Similar price to Nomad but not even 5% the brilliance. Was recommended to try the trout (heavily regret at trying it over the butter chicken) - and it was sooo average. The octopus was very tough. The prawn betel leaf was OK.

I am echoing the general sentiment in these reviews - food is very overpriced. Taste was ok but at these prices and small portion sizes, you really expect much better. $10 per oyster. $15 for a bite sized prawn wrapped in betel leaf. $19 for a piece of chicken tikka (pictured, with about 100g of chicken), it’s obscene that 5 of these cost almost $100, which can get you an entire feed-me menu at so many other amazing restaurants in Melbourne. $10 for a bowl of basmati rice I came here for a corporate lunch (i.e. did not choose this restaurant nor pay the bill) and I would never return on my own accord. Butter chicken was nothing special, a little on the bland side for my taste. I did enjoy the kerala prawn curry more. In Melbourne, there are so many restaurants where you can get delicious food with more bang for your buck. If you’re looking for modern Indian fusion, try Daughter in Law.

Why is the behavior of someone who broke lock down rules being celebrated by your company ( by offering him free meals after being fined ? ) Look forward to understanding why. Thanks

Seriously not trying to be unfair here but worst food I’ve ever had. It’s scary they can charge that much for poor quality and uninspiring food. It’s confusing with how the dishes are priced when quality and portion and taste is not there. Tried about $300 worth of food for anniversary and left hungry with tastebuds confused. the fusion doesn’t make sense, the combination was just bad. I wouldn’t pay even $20 for anything here. Sorry

I understand the food is not supposed to be authentic Indian but even so, with the result I was very confused and disappointed. Positives: (1) all the tandoori dishes we ordered had an authentic flavour, were cooked really well and had a lot of flavour. (2) staff were very attentive. Negatives: (1)The butter chicken tasted like nothing I have ever tasted before, the cardamom was so over powering that I couldn’t taste anything else. (2) the lamb curry was average, would have expected a lot more for the price paid. Overall, the atmosphere and venue were great. Despite the tandoor items tasting amazing, I feel like I would personally not pay $42 for an average sized a piece of fish (see picture of tandoor trout which is part of my review). I definitely think this place was overpriced (but that’s to be expected from a place like this I guess).

While I may not pay for the restaurant experience, their Thaili at the Thaili bar during lunch was while worth it to have a taste of their curries. Even though the butter chicken and lamb curry doesn't taste authentic Indian, but the meats were tender and juicy. The Pani Puri was well presented, interesting spin on a classic Indian Street food. Service was almost non existent at the Thaili Bar though.

This is one of the hidden gem. Indian blended Aussie restaurant. Food tastes very good. But very limited food menu. Indian dishes named aussie style. Curries are too pricey but you can order half in a size so price becomes half too. Staffs are very friendly definitely you need their help for ordering. This restaurant offers lot of varieties of liquor menu bit more than other pubs especially cocktails and mocktails. Pretty decent ambience. Culteries used for serving food are impressive. Booking is very much required. Restaurant is next to AC/DC lane which is well known for its graffiti the lanes are very small so it makes difficult to find the entrance of it. We can't see display board with the restaurant name. But checkout on the floor of entrance, restaurant name Tonka has be painted with graffiti. They have one more branch named as Coda which is an Asian cuisine restaurant.

Heard a lot of good things about this place, all of them are true. The food is amazing - kingfish with pappadum is a great way to start, chicken tikka in lettuce is very delicious, love the lamb curry that goes well with basmati rice, the fried cauliflower is a good side dish. Don’t forget to get the cocktail, they’re great! Most importantly the staff are very friendly and helpful, waitress gave us suggestions and make sure we don’t over order. The kitchen staff greeted us as we depart the restaurant, such a nice restaurant to dine in.

Tonka served modern Indian cuisine in a contemporary, fine-dining style setting. We ordered a few of their meals; Zucchini potato pakora, Chicken biryani with Sella rice, Pani puri crispy parcels filled with spiced potato, charred broccolini, and dessert Coque meringue Ispahan with rose cream lychee raspberry sorbet. All the dishes were full of flavours, delicious and presented well. The service was pretty good also. Overall, a great dining experience.

New to Melbourne, new to Indian food? Well this place will be on top of Google search when you search for fine dining Indian restaurants. The reason I can't give it a 5start like everyone else because it doesn't deserve it for: $7 for a piece of paneer. $10n for 1 waterball. These rates will justify if that 1 piece of paneer melts in my mouth and if that tasted like anything outside this world. But no. There are plenty of good fine dine restro in Melbourne which are worth the money. It might had been good when Tonka was a standalone restaurant in Melbourne but now there are plenty. Staff was good and made small talk here and there. Resto tables and sofa itself is not maintained which shows this place has not put up anything since inception.

The atmosphere gives a luxurious vibe and the service is quick & friendly. However, the food was quite a let down. We ordered Chicken Biryani from the Bigger dishes but the size was extremely small. It felt like this was fine dining for Indian food. Also, although this is a modern take on Indian food, the main essence of flavours was completely lost. Apart from the food, the place is overly priced for what it's small serving size. Would not recommend this as a main meal restaurant. Maybe a quick visit just for drinks and bite size snacks but still for this price you can find better options.

This looks an average Indian fusion restaurant to me. Food is good but not overwhelming. Some of the tests are pretty average. The ambience is average only, lacks warmth. The service was good though. The cuisines may be good for different ethnic people but not that great on my Indian taste buds. Finally the price is premium. Therefore my rating will be 3/5 as in my opinion the ambience and cuisines do not match the price.

Found this hidden gem in the alleyways of Flinders ln. Surprisingly good atmosphere inside after walking through quiet alleyways to get there on a Tuesday evening. Food and wine were great, we shared the dishes among 4 people. I liked that they offer half dishes for mains. I found the starters a little pricey I.e: the oyster in the photos for 10 aud + Would recommend if you like Indian fusion

Tonka was exactly what I expected - explosions of flavour, interesting takes and a pretty good cocktail list. The starters were amazing and the trout was exceptional - delicate tender flesh cooked to perfection, with a good char and full of flavour. The mains and dessert were weaker, and like most restaurants I would say a la carte is a much better choice than the set menu that we had

Came for the $29 per person Thali lunch, which is like an Indian version of a Bento box, and great value for the quality and serving size. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, which is always appreciated, they immediately answered our few questions, and were particularly helpful - and accurate - regarding the degree of 'hot' in the meals. I had the Lamb Rogan Josh which was spicy without being overpowering, and used the light, fluffy naan to wipe up all the sauce. The only surprise was the cos lettuce salad, which has a spicy dressing. Cos lettuce looks like it should be bland. This was anything but! My partner had Tonka’s butter chicken and it's a measure of how good it was that my request for a taste was gently rebuffed. Oh well, I'll order that next time. Highly recommended for lunch and we'll be back to try dinner soon, the food is that good 👍

Excellent service with very attentive wait staff. Book in advance. That said we came on a Monday night around 6:30, 2 people, walk-in and they had space on the bar. There's a lot on the menu so they offer you to just take care of the selection for you. It was a good idea and we had a very balanced meal - just be sure to let them know your budget before you choose this option! The food was very tasty - try the broccolini.

A good unique experience The food is a fusion of indian and italian with more of seafood on menu. Should introduce more vegetarian options also. The maango lassi is pretty average not a wow! Palak panner is a must order! Naans were again not a wow!! Average!!! The interior gives you a vibe of a fine dine adding the professional staff makes it wonderful!! Great effort!! I heard a lot about this place overall I wasn't facinated the food is just fine! You have plenty of other good food point in CBD its just you are paying for experimental food and the experience!

Easily one of the best Indian places in Australia. Fantastic fusion options . The sea food and the chicken biryani is out of this world. We happened to arrive at just the right time and were able to sit in the bar area at a small table we you can order from the full restaurant menu. It’s a very trendy place and there’s was lots of people coming in for dinner. We decided to taste a few dishes and relied on the waiters recommendation to make our final choices.

The best indian fusion food in Melbourne. Every thing about this place is amazing..the price is on the higher end, but you wont regret paying for the delicious food they serve.

Food was average not great. Some of the waiters need training on how to work in high profile restaurants. Except for one, no other waiter wore mask which was pretty bad. Bathroom was pretty bad and needs quality maintenance.

Excellent food, service and atmosphere. Perfect for a bit of trendy, modern dining. Went for lunch, but imagine it would be fantastic in the evenings in an intimate setting. Will be back again.

Great for a work lunch as they have an express menu and also great if you have time to enjoy the full menu! We got the butter chicken with naan & rice, the king fish and the burrata! All delicious ! The service was super friendly and efficient as I said I will definitely be back. Highly recommend.

I really enjoyed the food here. It was a cute find in an alleyway with graffiti all around. Didn't know if I was going in the right direction, but saw the neon sign, walked in and they had space available for lunch. Great Indian flavours in the dishes, awesome service and a beautifully decorated restaurant

We were debating whether to give Tonka four or five stars. Honestly, we really couldn’t fault the place. All the food was delicious, the cocktails were refreshing and different, the service was polite and the decor was pleasing. We’d happily visit again. I can’t say there was a standout dish that I simply couldn’t get anywhere else, but I’d like to try and find it if we go there again.

Fantastic food... but I wish that they cook the salmon a bit longer as I told them that I can’t eat raw fish.

I wish I could give this place a 5 star. Everything ticks the box except value for money.

A stunning venue with a breathtaking installation. Our waitress Caroline was exceptional and provided us with the most amazing service. She knew when we had left the table, folded our napkins, knew when we were ready for our next drink, chose all of our meals, she really looked after us. The food.... wow, wow, wow !! Not to mention the delicious, unique cocktails. An incredible experience all round and it is worth every penny!

It is nice fusion stuff, easy place to go to and stay a few hours. Panipuri could he served at the end perhaps, that may be nicer. Also, could get some Indian beers and i missed seeing any lassi cocktails. Lots of whisky choices and friendly though.

If you’re and Indian, do go expecting Indian food. This is overrated, fancy and you would end up being disappointed. It is not authentic Indian food- basically tasteless, colourless and odourless.

We did the Tonka dinner experience and I must say It was dull food. It was beautifully cooked and presented, however flavours were all very flat, that’s how boring it tasted. I've never been to Tonkas actual restaurant but its supposed to be better. Staff was unprofessional, keep forgetting the order, doesn’t know simple dishes or drinks name. Summary not worth in any aspect.

We did the Tonka x NGV dinner experience and I must say I was a bit dulled after the food. It was beautifully cooked and presented, however flavours were all very flat, at times I would've loved to add at least some salt, that's how boring it tasted. I've never been to Tonkas actual restaurant but its supposed to be better. I think this was a bit of a dampener on our Saturday night.

The most amazing food. We had the banquet and could not finish the amount of food. My second time there and will go back for a third for sure.

Really good place with some really yummy Indian food which took us back to our hometown. I would definitely recommend tonka for dinner with candle light. The staffs were very friendly and considerate. Had a good time with my friends.

The surroundings, the food, wine recommendations, and service was faultless. A wonderful fusion of food where we were taken on a tantalising tastebud journey. Not only tasted good but was a talking point for every shared plate. The sommelier was supportive and demonstrated his knowledge to what would best suit us and I say thank you.

Food was beautiful but not the service! Some of the waiters need training on how to work in a fine dining restaurant. Waiter just took the unfinished food away without asking... overall service is meh.

Absolutely loved this place. One of the best Places I have been to. If you are looking for a place for Indian food with a twist this is it. The food was great and the drinks too. The service was very friendly and attentive. They were quite fast with our order which was impressive. Will definitely return.

I think this may have been our best dining experience to date. Wait staff were perfection. So helpful, designing our menu and wine to match. All the food was incredible. But if I had to pick a highlight it would be the burrata- OMG! 😋 Thanks for making my partners birthday and our trip back to Melbourne so special!

Beautiful food and a great alcoholic lassie. Last time I actually sat down there I had to deal with an arrogant uninterested waiter. But I'm sure management clear these arrogant little men out regularly.

Loved TONKA. Modern Indian cuisine. Delicious food, immaculate service. I’m no connoisseur but that had to be the best butter chicken I’ve ever tasted

Ambiance and customer service was excellent 👌 and they do have variety of drinks 🍸 too. The only concern I have with food serving quantity was too little. ( like a child meal). Having said that the test of food was excellent 👌 😋.

DIVINE!!!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! First time visit for us and it didn't disappoint, the service is wonderful and the food is DELICIOUS! My partner enjoyed his cucumber (with volcanic salt) martini ( he had 3!) and I with the mango lassi with white rum For entree, we had the vindaloo steak tartare and Kabuli Chana in betel leaf with roasted pineapple For mains, we opted for the half serve of the butter chicken and lamb curry- just as well because the serving was quite generous as well as the fried cauliflower For dessert, I thoroughly enjoyed the guava and mango Bombe Alaska with caramelised quinoa The restaurant is very trendy and decor is sublime. The staff and crew was very friendly Would definitely come back next time we visit Melbourne

As someone who struggles with bright, loud spaces, it was great to have quiet background music, no clatter from the tables, and a crew who took the time to explain the menu and suggested matching drinks. Plenty of options for us vegetarians, nicely charred roti, fresh pickles, crunchy pani puri and fresh filled betel leaves. And as for the cucumber Margarita (see foto), A-mazing!! We'll be back on our next Melbourne city break.
