I found this place while looking for recommendations on the web. I was really disappointed as it did not meet my expectations that were based off of reviews online. I intend this to be a constructive feedback given the food overall was good and service was nice. My disappointment was mainly with the portion sizes of all dishes on the set menu. I don't expect restaurants to go out of their way in their generosity but this definitely felt below par. I would love to hear others who have been here. Also wonder if there is a bar for portion sizes that even Michelin star restaurants ought to adhere to.

Amazing food and service. We went for taster menu and every dish they brought was amazing. Twined with good drinks we had an amazing time

The service was a premium, the decor contemporary, the location was easy to find (with free parking during the evenings, if you can find it). The food was cooked well, the menu was detailed, and the overall impression of the restaurant was pleasant. However, I can't quite justify the minimum spend with the food. While it was good quality food, I simply couldn't quite nail down why it was Michelin star worthy - relative to other places I've been to that where either cheaper, or better food. No doubt the food was of a high quality, cooked with care, but I can't justify the premium. Overall, would recommend if someone was in the area, but wouldn't return at this price point.

Great service and food. A bit pricy but worth trying. Only scored 4* as one of the desserts we ordered was not the one we ordered. Other than that, all was tasty and the hosts were very polite, knowledge and explained what food they are serving

Is this really a Michelin starred restaurant? I’ve waited to visit Benares for some time and had never gotten round to booking as it’s rare I fancy Indian food when in London but yesterday was pre planned and I was excited for the experience. I was left disappointed. Ultimately the food was tasty but not worth the price point. As another reviewer mentioned, it’s potentially a victim of its own success. Our meal started with waiter (small male who was more formally dressed than the others) coming up to the table asking ‘are you ready to order?’ Then followed with ‘well what do you want then?’ One of many red flags to come. Limited interaction; no asking if we’d like another drink. Not checking how the food is - the basic etiquette of food hospitality. My starter of samosas was very tasty and the lamb main was devine. Everything else was average. Other members of staff were warm and welcoming but the whole experience did not scream Michelin standard. There are better Indian restaurants in London; I wouldn’t go back.

We came for a mid week dinner and although the food was mostly good, at this price point (£100 each excluding alcohol), you'd expect everything to be excellent. Between the two of us, we shared the malabar scallops (great flavour and delicious), Essex farm momo (interesting flavour but tasty), tandoori ratan (complimentary as they brought this out by mistake but it was quite average so wouldn't recommend), chaapon ka pulao (lamb cutlets which were nice), butter chicken (the flavour wasn't quite right and lacked seasoning) and the bhindi do pyazaa (stir fry okra where the flavour was good but the okra was too soft). There was no music playing which I thought was odd. The service was generally efficient but not overly friendly.

Exquisite food and excellent service. The wine list is an extensive selection if white, rose, red and sparkling, ranging from £38-£999. All the food was explained which would probably beneficial to someone not well versed in Indian and Indian fusion food. They also gave me some recommendations when I was stuck between two wines. The notes for the wine are not listed so if you are unsure it's best to ask them. My favourite dish was definitely the salmon which was both delicate and flavourful. They also bought a dessert out for the birthday we were celebrating. The only thing downside (and it was one my parents had rather than me) was it felt a bit busy/cramped with the amount of tables. However it was peak lunchtime so I believe this to be unavoidable. This isn't a cheap meal out but the price is actually worth it unlike some other Michelin star restaurants.

A complete disappointment! Service was subpar. We had to tell them to bring a menu after waiting around for 20 minutes. We also had to tell one of the waiters to come and take our order after waiting another 15 minutes. The food was underwhelming, we had to send one of the dishes back due to the lack of freshness and poor quality of the meat. When we tried to explain the issue to the floor manager, he took a defensive tone arguing that he knows for a fact that the meat is fresh. Over night, both myself and the other party started developing... surprise surprise... food poisoning!!! We called the restaurant to let them know about this, we were promised to be contacted ASAP by someone to discuss the issue. No one ever got back to us. Wow - this used to be a good restaurant, no wonder it has lost its Michelin star.

Came here for a birthday lunch , Decor of restaurant is great , Service was very friendly. Went for the lunch set menu which is great value for money. 38 pounds 3 courses and a cocktail. I requested for the spice level to be amped up and this was done without compromising the flavours. The only small negative is that the main course / naan could have been slightly larger in portion. Gave me a slice of cake for my birthday and finished with aromatic masala chai. P.S The wild berry chutney served with the papar was probably the best I have ever tasted.

Food was delicious, but prices could be better. The tasting menu is affordable, but the prices on the a la carte were a bit pricy for some of the dishes. I had the ceviche, which was great, but not worth £20. The lamb was fantastic, it was 10/10, as well as my fruit cake. I would come back so fast! The staff was kind and friendly, and made sure we had a great dinner.

STOP what you’re doing right now and book a table here!!! Upon our arrival, I was given a lovely scarf (in celebration of Diwali I think) . The ambience, decor, service and food was AMAZING. They even gave us a power pack to charge our phones and altered the menu re likes/dislikes and allergies. Possibly the best restaurant I’ve been to. We had a set menu. Will be returning to try other things. Divine experience. Wish I knew the name of our waitress- loveliest girl ever but all that served- did so impeccably!! Private function rooms available too as well as a chef’s table type of thing. Check out my photos - the food tasted even better than it looks and it looks fabulous!!!! 😍 DEFINITELY going back. Deserves multiple Michelin stars!!!!

First off I booked this place like 3-7 days earlier, not exactly sure when. They kept forcing us to stay in a private room which we obviously don’t want and after like 20 minutes of complaining they moved us to the main dining area, bearing in mind they said the whole restaurant is fully booked. After our whole stay, there were 5 tables fully empty the entire night despite being ‘fully booked’. Service is terrible. Onto the food, very average Indian food you can make at home, nothing special about it, not even any good presentation. Many better Indian places to choose from. Do not recommend at all. I don’t see why the reviews are as good as they are.

Loved the experience, it was a girly hen party, in August, the food was lovely. A great fusion of flavours, complimentary tiny snacks arrived with our starters. The mains and the dessert were extraordinary, with great company, would certainly dine here again.

Really good food, atmosphere and service. As usual with these more expensive establishments however, portion size was microscopic.

We have been to Benares to dine in and really enjoyed it, so given current Covid situation we recently ordered a delivery. The food was excellent, lovely flavours, fresh ingredients, most definitely a cut above. It’s really well packaged for delivery and portions are (for us) a very reasonable size. You can choose a time for delivery which can be very helpful. Great dining experience at home.

The food was delicious and the lunch set menu was well thought out and good value. Would recommend ordering sides which are an extra cost as the main meal is not really complete otherwise. The service could be improved. After waiting a very long time for our mains to arrive, I enquired as to their arrival. There was no previous apology or acknowledgement that it was taking a long time (over 45 minutes). The server commented that they were on their way and went to the kitchen. We were offered a drink on the house and an apology, which seemed very reactive. Finally, after more waiting, our mains arrived. We were kindly offered a side and naan bread once we finished our meal, which was a bit odd but appreciated as it was delicious. I appreciate things can happen in the kitchen but the restaurant was not busy and so it was a bit disappointing that it wasn't better managed. I felt as if they forgot about us and wonder what would have happened if I didn't mention it. Would highly recommend for the food and hope they take this as a learning experience to providing service to match their food.

We had a wonderful dinner at Benares. The service was okay excellent especially Razu. He made some good recommendations which didn’t let us down. Definitely a place for special occasions and every effort has been made to be COVID-19 safe. All the dishes apart from the lamb curry were delicious with lots of flavour. We will be returning again next time the menu changes.

Great fine dining experience. The food was cooked to well, came out hot and tasted fresh. Service was brilliant staff were very efficient and extremely astute. The restaurant is very clean and well maintained and had social distance measures in place as well as all staff adhered to social distancing regulations as best as they could. I made the restaurant aware that it was for my husbands birthday, they brought over a complimentary slice of chocolate cake as well as complimentary mango macaroons.

This lunchtime taster menu offers up seriously delicious Indian food. The flavour combinations are fantastic, and the stories behind it are even better. The service was exceptional, always with a smile, and I highly recommend asking questions about the food - any of the service team will be open to talk to you about it. Fantastic place, and I can't wait to go again.

Brilliant service. Staff were friendly and accommodating. We were gifted a tasting menu for our wedding anniversary, and ordered a cocktail and beer. We were shocked to receive a bill of over £70, despite someone pre paying for our meal!

Okay, don’t get me wrong, the food is excellent but for the price I wasn’t blown away. That’s why it’s four star out of five. I have to say that the service and atmosphere was outstanding with the waiter recommending a couple of vegetarian dishes that weren’t on the menu (samosa chaat and veggie momos). It’s definitely a must go but I’m not sure as a vegetarian I would go again, maybe for a drink at the bar.

The food was absolutely delicious, especially the Malabar Scallops and paratha. There were a few vegetarian options and they were able to provide a few other options off-menu like lamb biryani, vegetable biryani etc. (We were a la carte) We were quite a large group but the staff did a great job with us, managing all our orders and needs. The food was also good value for money, given how high quality and well cooked it was. Highly recommend coming here and I hope to come back soon!

Chicken broth and dumplings were excellent as was the main course of quail. The service was top notch and I loved the interior really had a sense of mystic . Only drawback was the deserts could’ve been a little bit better the chocolate pistachio cake in particular lacked that “spark” you expect from a Michelin starred establishment. Overall though a fantastic experience all round and highly recommended .

I recently had the pleasure of indulging in the 'Ayurveda-Inspired Menu'. I must say, I was pleasantly surprised by how delicious it tasted. Although the portions were not particularly large, the wonderful ambience and attentive service more than made up for it. While I may not choose the set menu again in the future, I would recommend giving it a try for a flavorful experience.

What a great dining experience! Dropped in here without a reservation on a Saturday night and the team did a great job in accommodating us. I wish I had of take more pictures here as the atmosphere was wonderful and relaxing. The team were not able to deliver our first dessert, but made that up with them cooking two just in case the next time. But also a complimentary glass of bubbles, as well as their signature dessert! We simply rolled out of this place with no more space left in our stomachs. Would love to return again in the future.

Lovely food, good ambience and service! Understated but better than a few of the Indian restaurants in London that have been popular over the past few years. Will definitely visit soon again!

  • 4/5 Paddy M. 4 years ago on Google
The food was very flavoursome and the service from the staff was excellent. Looking at the prices, I wouldn't ever say it's fairly priced, but luckily I had a voucher so I didn't have to take the sting! To be fair, it is in Mayfair so high prices are expected. 100% worth a go if money isn't an issue for you, but if you earn under 25k it'll probably hurt you for the month.

We visited Benares for lunch during February. When we arrived and I was worried about the steep stairs as I have a weak knee. In fact we were escorted through a very modern vestibule a little way along the road, went up in the and found ourselves in the restaurant. The food was excellent and served very professionally by well trained staff. We were treated with respect and deference.

Very nice over all and deserve the five star - although in my opinion it was a bit overrated given how difficult it was for us to make a reservation.... the restaurant is great dont get me wrong, but a bit too much hype around

A Christmas family get-together. Tasty, well presented food. Excellent service. Perfect lighting...soft, but you could see what you were eating. Some background music, but the acoustics good for relaxed conversation.Prices are what to expect in a high-end, West End restaurant.

Ambience and service is spot on. Food favours more towards western tastes but overall quite good. A bit disappointed this high end restaurant had samosa that tasted like a prepackaged frozen brand than homemade and the kulfi dessert was clearly a dressed up store bought kulfi. Surely a restaurant of this standard should make fresh kulfi. Anyway nice overall.

  • 1/5 Karan K. 3 years ago on Google
The Restaurant is supposed to be a high end Michelin star restaurant but didn't have an allergen menu which was shocking to me. I went there to celebrate my birthday but came out eating food that I am allergic to even though I informed the restaurant about my allergy. I ate the food trusting their word without knowing as they didn't have an allergen menu. I was throwing up and got really ill which ruined my birthday. Not only that when I called them under 12 hours of me being there, they straight up denied my complaint which was more shocking to me. Apparently it isnt their fault. I nearly died with this visit. My birthday would have been my death day. So I am writing this review to create awareness because some day someone might not be as lucky.

Benares has been supporting us, a local NHS GP practice, with lunch deliveries during this challenging time. This is extremely appreciated due the difficulties we have getting lunch with the social distancing in Supermarkets and other local business being close. The food is of an exceptionally high standard - even with the delivery process (we'd all prefer to be at the restaurant!) and we are all extremely grateful. A big thank you from all of us!

Superb experience. We went for dinner. Service was attentive, discrete and quite efficient . The ambience was elegant and unobtrusive. Pappadums and dips were served whilst we waited for our drinks. We odered lychee and honey lassi which was fantastic, mango lassi which went far beyond the normal mango lassi served at other Indian restaurants and a mango mocktail. For started we had momos followed by mains- stone bass, smoked aubergune , methi malai matter and a cabbage and coconut dish with nan and rice, all exquisitely cooked. The dessert was the star of the night- misti dohi with pistachio barfi and cranberries. It is a must try. This is a Michelin starred restaurant and expensive. Worth a visit on special occasions.

My boyfriend and I visited Benares last night using our gifted Virgin Experiance voucher. 3 courses with paired duo of wines. The whole evening was wonderful. We have used these vouchers before at other establishments and giggled to ourselves when they take you over to a clearly "voucher only area". Benares did not do this, we got to feel all fancy pants! The atmosphere, service and food was all incredible. I chose the samosa, venison and kiwi yoghurt... holy moly! Delicious!

My rating is only for the service and not food. No doubt the service was excellent, but we pay for both at such high profile expensive fine dine-in, isn't it? I was impressed the first time with the variety and taste, they met dietary requirements , I would class it as Michelin star, But it failed to meet expectations the 2nd time. Food was below par and disappointed with the taste, options as they were similar to any common restaurant. The only good items were dessert and drinks. However, I do appreciate the kind gesture for marriage anniversary vegan cake. Hence the 4 stars..!

After hearing a lot about Banaras a flagship restaurant of Atul Kochhar, I went there on Wednesday with my family. It was my older son’s wedding anniversary. On entering the restaurant we discovered the main restaurant is on the Ist floor with no lift serving it? With a helping hand from my son , I managed to reach upstairs; I had a hip operation six months months ago and still find it difficult to climb the stairs. We were comfortably seated on a corner table . The place was very poorly lit. The restaurant had a limited menu with few vegetarian and non vegetarian dishes. To start with we ordered Tandoori Ratan,Paneer Tikka and Samosa tartlets. The portions were small and the food was mediocre. The paneer tasted of stale smoke. The samosa tartlets had a spoonful of spicy boiled potatoes in a tartlet casing( not freshly baked), decorated with tamarind chutney and sweetened yogurt. For the main course we ordered Tandoori Chaapein, Murg Makhani, Okra and two kinds of Dal; Dal Makhani and Dal Tarka. Lamb Chops were nicely cooked but I am afraid these didn’t go with mashed potatoes ( same as tartlets) and garlicky spinach purée. Chicken was well cooked but the gravy was sweet and tasted of Heinz soup with butter added, garnished with chopped coriander. Nans and Roti were small and smothered with clarified butter. In my liking I am afraid this was no gourmet food, it was overpriced and didn’t reach our expectations. I am a connoisseur of Indian food and also written a book about it called Truly Punjabi

Excellent food and service. Birthday celebration cake sent by the chef was a lovely end to a special evening. Would definitely recommend to family and friends. Thali was exceptional.

Excellent service and food. We had the 3 course set menu with some bubbly and thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience. Staff we're really nice and accommodating of our little son as well and they also had a kids menu as a bonus. Can't wait to go back some time soon.

The pleasure of good food and prompt service all combined in one. From the simple Nimbu Paani to the Tandoori Smoked Haddock everything was amazing. We were expecting a very westernized take on the Indian Samosa chaat, when we placed the order It was ofcourse not the desi one, but it pleasantly surprised us. Each flavour prominent, tamarind mint and sweet curd...eachone standing out but still culminating as one on the plate.... Its curated not prepared The service is on point :) Thankyou for the good time

Food was very good, service was excellent. However, the ambience was bitterley disappointing. Visited last Saturday and it's fair to say COVID19 had adversely impacted our overall dining experience with limited diners and poor seating arrangements (stating the obvious I guess).

Great menu, can recommend the lunch Thali (Tandoori Macchi was amazing) and the Rasmalai Mille Fuille for dessert. Friendly and very covid-safe environment was relaxing and made it all about the superb food and service, just as it should be.

Heard a lot about this place so had to try it. But was very disappointed. My daughter had bought a voucher for 2, the set menu. The set menu did not have much choice, for starter I expected perhaps tandoori chicken, kebab, or something like that. There was a chicken dish but was told that was like a soup so had vegetable samosa as nothing else there. Then for main again not much choice, i ordered the Venison Keema and then expected it would come with rice or Naan but NO it comes with 2 ROLLS. I wanted a Naan, which I would have to pay for, but was advised by the waiter not to as the rolls would be plenty. The Keema was very tasty. Sweet dish was fantastic too. It was disappointing that they would not let us order from A-Le-Carte menu and just take off the amount that had been paid for the set menu off - staff not helpful - also felt that we were rushed through the evening. If I wanted SOUP or ROLLS I would not be going to an Indian Restaurant. Will not be going there again. Chutney Mary is much better.

We ordered a food delivery from Benares and were thrilled with the food. We choose from the vegetarian dishes. Everything was beautifully presented and tasty. I wrote an article for my blog so took a few pictures.

Had a great lunch at Benares, started with some great cocktails, mine was a lychee martini and my partner had the mango margarita which was really delicious with a sweet chilli and salt rim, need to learn how to make it, and the bar staff were so nice in sharing with me the ingredients. Service was great with advice and recommendations for the menu, and help with dietary requirements. We had the Momo with mushroom sauce and truffle and the Squid keema to start both were outstanding and full of flavour. For mains we had the lamb black pepper stir fry which was served in a Yorkshire pudding and the hake with green curry spices both delicious and the hake was cooked to perfection. The restaurant had a really nice atmosphere with diners as well as staff so friendly, we bonded with the table next to us through food envy of each other's dishes. Overall, great food, service, drinks and atmosphere.

I loved every bit of Benares! Beautiful entrance, great bar with little pool, nice people working there Good atmosphere and balanced noise wise, good to talk As a vegan I got obsessed with Samosa even more after this visit, it was amazing flavour Potatoes been lovely, flavour just incredible I cannot even describe and little pot with Daal, very beautiful little silver pots My friend ordered meat dish and I could see how happy he was, that was special We been so full after that we couldn’t fit dessert, hope next time ❣️ But we received lovely complimentary cake, that was such nice gesture 🌹 Thank you Benares team, I look forward to come back soon!

Really lovely ambience in the restaurant with dark mood lighting and asisn inspired decorations . Service was really good, very friendly and the waiters explained all the dishes well. The food was good. I really loved poppadoms with the Berry chutney as appetisers. Starters was chicken momo in a hot sweetcorn soup. I enjoyed this a lot, was little spicy but tasty. I did not enjoy the main lamb curry with moringa naan. The lamb was cooked perfectly and falling apart as soon as my fork touched it. Just wasn't a big fan of the flavours in the curry and it was very spicy which I couldn’t handle. Moringa naan was ok but I would not eat it again. For dessert I had the date and ginger sticky toffee pudding. This was also very good but nothing special. The manager and owner came to speak to us while we were having dinner which was nice. Overall a nice restaurant and would probably would visit again.

Hit and miss. Good attentive amicable service. Well cooked and well presented ingredients, however, some dishes were a miss. The scallop with strawberry is a huge miss, an overpowering taste of out of season strawberries! The foie gras with Langoustine and raw curry didn't blend well. The tandoori lamb chop was scrumptious and wish if I had a whole rack of it. The dessert was light and fluffy and pink in all the right places. Will definitely try again when it is not a valentine's menu. Recommended.

Had high hopes based on its reputation, reviews, reassuringly expensive menu and of course the MS Star rating. Reality however trumped Expectation...a very underwhelming experience. Aged decor, limited choices on the lunch menu & astonishingly small (almost comedic) portions of food. On the plus side, the food tasted good & excellent and attentive staff.

Food was fantastic, incredibly tasty and beautifully presented. Staff were friendly and attentive. They bought out a little surprise cake for my partner's birthday as well. The space probably lacked a little atmosphere for a Wednesday lunchtime but it was quiet and a big space which would be why. All in all, a great experience.

Tradicional yet surprising, true to its roots. We took the tasting menu and loved it from start to finish. There were a couple of delicious creative dishes but “grand finale” was a Tikka Masala Chicken that was simply superb. Great service, cosy & unpretentious vibe. More than deserves its Michelin star. A must for anyone who loves Indian food. For sure we’ll return.

As soon as I entered the restaurant I felt catapulted to the ‘80s, the style it’s a bit dated 🙈 the food quality and the service though, make me want to come back very soon. Everything was delicious and very well presented, furthermore, when they knew I was celebrating my birthday, they came with a lovely cake and a candle to celebrate. Loved the mocktail as well 😝

I really wanted to like this, we were bought the tasting menu as a gift, and waited for a special occasion to use it. Unfortunately this was sub-standard. I would not recommend for the price. Good points - interesting use of seafood, never had a sea bream chaat before, and in all fairness this dish was the best we had. - wine pairings were successful flexing between both white and red wines from Europe - staff were attentive, although a bit quick to turnover courses - door staff were lovely - presentation of all the food was better than the taste Negatives - decor overall felt dated and old fashioned - food was largely bland / over spiced and not enough flavour. Actually left my main meal of sole kebab as was rubbery - overall atmosphere felt stuffy and not at all worthy of a special occasion -price did not justify vs other tasting menus. I wouldn’t have wanted seconds of anything Sign of a bad experience when partner wanted more food on the way home :-s

Service and atmosphere was ok, but food! This restaurant should be proud of their kitchen I cannot recommend this place enough. From nibbles to desserts, every single dish was outstanding! Very rare find, definitely recommend

Amazing experience and the service was outstanding. The food was melting in our mouth. We started with Paneer Galouti, Hiran Boti Kebab and then Chooza Tikka Masala, Dum ka Subz Kofta, Dal Tadka, Bhinda Fry, Paratha for the Appetisers and Mains. Then came the Rasmalai Mille Fuill for desert. Would highly recommend.

On our family visit to London from New York, I was looking for the best Indian Restaurant in London and I am so glad we booked Benares! Each plate was beautifully presented and filled with flavor. We had the tasting menu and my favorite was the street food starter and lamb chop dish. Each bite had a surprising burst of unexpected spice that left me yearning for the next bite. The service was attentive and we felt very welcomed. Having travelled to so many countries and cities, and after visiting many Michelin Star restaurants, I can say this is definitely on my return list for London !
