Have been going to this area for years to meet a business contact but only now got some time to take photos of this beautiful mosque which was built in 1926. The builder was a businessman originally from Surat and famous for his shipping business in Kolkata. Nakhoda means a mariner hence the mosque received this name from his occupation.

One of the largest mosque in Kolkata, the Nakhoda Masjid is one of the major tourist attractions of the city. It was built by Abdur Rahim Osman in 1926. It is located at the intersection of Zakaria Street and Rabindra Sarani. The gateway is an ersatz of the Buland Darwaza at Fatehpur Sikri. For this purpose granite stones were brought from Tolepur. Inside is a superb exhibition of exquisite ornamentation and artistic extravaganza. I used to visit a lot at these place because u will find lot of food stalls who serves delicious street food and there are lot more street vendor u can find clothing and many oher items at very cheap rate. But if you are planning to visit this then visit during ramzan cause that time zakaria street changed completely. Very nice place to visit.

A beautiful mosque situated right on the main road, in the center of the city with some rich history and architecture. You might see that it resembles the Buland Darwaza. If you're visiting Kolkata, make sure you stop by this place of worship and pay your respects. You can enter the premises irrespective of your religion and look around. Be respectful in your attire. Do not expect parking in the area. You may have to park almost along the tiretti bazar area and walk up.

The Nakhoda Masjid is the principal mosque of Kolkata, India, in the Chitpur area of the Burrabazar business district in Central Kolkata, at the intersection of Zakaria Street and Rabindra Sarani. The largest mosque in Kolkata, the Nakhoda Masjid is one of the major tourist attractions of the city. It was built by Abdur Rahim Osman in 1926. He hailed from the region of Kutch in Gujarat and belonged to the Sunni Muslim community. Built on the lines of Akbar’s Tomb at Sikandra, the architecture of the mosque is a grand example of Indo-Saracenic architecture. The entrance of the mosque has a striking resemblance to that of the Buland Darwaza at Fatehpur Sikri. The mosque has two minarets and three domes with an additional 25 minarets. The monument can accommodate 10,000 devotees during a prayer meeting. Inside the mosque, a small exhibition is held at regular intervals where you can choose to buy some exquisite ornaments. You can also by attar outside the mosque on all days, except Sundays. Tourists throng to this monument to catch glimpses of its exquisite architecture. So if you are making a trip to Kolkata, do remember to visit this iconic structure. The mosque was built as an imitation of the mausoleum of Mughal Emperor Akbar at Sikandra, Agra by Kutchi Memon Jamat, a small community of Sunni Muslim community from Kutch.[1][2][3][4] Abdur Rahim Osman, a leader of the Kutchi Memon Jama'at, who funded the building was a shipping prince: The mosque was named Nakhoda meaning Mariner.[2][5] The foundation stone was laid on 11 September 1926. The total cost incurred for the construction was 1,500,000 Indian rupees in 1926. The mosque's prayer hall has a capacity of 10,000. The masjid has three domes and two minarets which are 151 feet high. There are an additional 25 smaller minarets which range from 100 feet to 117 feet high. The gateway is an ersatz of the Buland Darwaza at Fatehpur Sikri. For this purpose granite stones were brought from Tolepur. Inside is a superb exhibition of exquisite ornamentation and artistic extravaganza.

Interior of one of the oldest and the largest Muslim Mosque in West Bengal and eastern India, The Nakhoda Musjid, having a long history of tradition and culture. The mosque was built as an imitation of the mausoleum of Mughal Emperor Akbar at Sikandra, Agra by Kutchi Memon Jamat, a small community of Sunni Muslim community from Kutch. It was built by Abdur Rahim Osman in 1926 and can accommodate up to 10,000 devotees at the same time for them to perform their prayer, 'Namaaz'. Being a hindu and respectful towards all religion, I got privilege to get inside without any problem, relished the architectural wonders, seen blissful people offering prayers to the Almighty and found solace in the serenity of the place. Anyone share the same ideology, need just to approach the committee seeking permission and yes you can entre the mosque without any questions and seek to the any corners to the mosque for some picturesque moments. We the people of secular India, need to feel proud about this.

I am giving 5 star to this heritage site. Nakhoda is the biggest and most attractive mosque of Kolkata. This site is located at Barrabazar, not so far from M.G. Road. Really this place is very peaceful. All the religious people's can enter and pray for Allah independently. The inside of the mosque is very maintained and clean. A great place for visit.

Walking towards Zakaria Street through Big Bazaar. Tram used to run on this road. I don't know how far the old tram lines went. I continued to keep my eyes on that. From a distance, the eyes were stuck towards a big dome and some minarets. The domes are burning in the middle of buildings and cables. Everything around faded away, its beauty developing as we approached. I was talking about Nakhoda Mosque. The main and largest mosque of Kolkata is located in Chitpur area. Nakhoda Masjid is an architectural marvel. Fine decoration is a unique expression of artistic imagination. The royal mood can be found in every corner of the mosque. The construction of this mosque started in 1926 and ended in 1942. The person who built this mosque was a sailor by profession, hence the name Nakhoda Mosque because Nakhoda means sailor in Persian language. When I entered through the high gate of the mosque, the Maghrib call to prayer was going on. It's like being transported to the Mughal era via a time machine. You have to come back again and again to get this feeling. Many worshipers are entering the mosque. It's time for prayer...

Nakhoda Masjid is a magnificent mosque located in Kolkata, India. Known for its grandeur and historical significance, the mosque stands as a testament to the rich Islamic heritage of the city. Having visited Nakhoda Masjid, I was truly captivated by its architectural beauty and the serene atmosphere within its walls. One of the striking features of Nakhoda Masjid is its impressive facade. The mosque's entrance is adorned with intricate designs and delicate calligraphy, showcasing the mastery of Muslim craftsmen. As I entered the main prayer hall, I was immediately drawn to the soaring domes and minarets that gracefully punctuate the skyline. The attention to detail and the use of vibrant colors in the interior decorations further enhanced the mosque's splendor. The peaceful ambiance of Nakhoda Masjid is truly awe-inspiring. The spacious prayer hall accommodates a large number of worshippers, yet the atmosphere remains calm and serene. The soft lighting and the gentle sound of prayers create a soothing environment that invites introspection and spiritual reflection. Whether you are a devout Muslim or someone interested in experiencing the tranquility of a sacred space, Nakhoda Masjid offers a serene sanctuary in the heart of the bustling city. Aside from its architectural beauty, Nakhoda Masjid holds great historical significance. Built in 1926, the mosque was initially intended to serve the needs of the Muslim community in Kolkata, which has a rich and diverse cultural heritage. Over the years, it has become a symbol of religious harmony and unity, attracting visitors from different backgrounds and beliefs. Exploring the mosque's history and engaging with the local community provides a deeper understanding of Kolkata's multicultural fabric.

Nakhoda Masjid is popularly known as "Bara Masjid". Most of the people are muslim in this area. This place is busy and famous for business. Narrow roads and traffic jam are the main problem here. But when you will enter the mosque complex, you will feel peace. The deep read/ liver- hued wall and golden dome gives another level of beauty in this mosque. People take preyer in this mosque 5 times daily. You can see some muslim restaurants around the mosque. Their Beef iteams are cheap and tasty...

This century old masjid is most probably the largest one in Eastern India and the most important one in Kolkata. Nakhoda means sailor or mariner. Haji Zakhria, the key person behind the construction of this masjid, was in shipping business. Thus the name was derived. The architecture is very nice. Inside there is a huge prayer hall which can accommodate approximately 10,000 devotees during namaz. Though the area is highly congested one, it's situated at a walking distance from C R Avenue or Mahatma Gandhi Road and Rabindra Sarani crossing. This mosque is worth visiting.

It's a largest, beautiful & historical mosque in Kolkata. The mosque was built as an imitation of the mausoleum of Mughal Emperor Akbar at Sikandra, Agra by Kutchi Memon Jamat, a small community of Sunni Muslim community from Kutch. The Nakhoda Musjid the largest Muslim Mosque in West Bengal and eastern India ha a long history. Before 1854 there used to be two different mosques at the present site. Haji Zakariah who was (Kutchi) Cutchi Memon merchant and business tycoon in those days was a regular musallee (devotee). The Cutchi Memon are a Muslim community who came to Calcutta round 1823 onwards. Haji Zakaria was the leader of other Sunni Muslim community who inhabited the surrounding areas of the present musjid. The mosque was named Nakhoda meaning Mariner. Reconstruction work started in 1926 and was completed in 1935.  All the prominent Cutchi memons of Calcutta contributed for the new mosque but Abdul Rahim Osman was the biggest donor.  The total cost incurred for the construction was 1,500,000 Indian rupees in 1926. The contract for rebuilding the musjid was given to Mackintosh Burn & Co., a British engineering company. This Masjid is a historical place. But lately, it is a waste. Ladies are allowed without purda. Masjid follows old hanafi school. So, a lot of bidat are included. Wudu's place is open, so contaminated water. I won't suggest visiting this place, especially if you're a sincere Muslim who wants to pray namaj.

Nakhoda Masjid, located in Kolkata, India, is an architectural gem that boasts rich history and cultural significance. This majestic mosque stands as a testament to the city's diverse heritage and religious harmony. Stepping into the courtyard of Nakhoda Masjid evokes a sense of awe and tranquility. The intricate architecture, adorned with beautiful domes, towering minarets, and intricate designs, showcases the fine craftsmanship of its builders. The red sandstone structure, combined with white marble detailing, creates a mesmerizing sight, especially when illuminated during prayer times or festivals. As one enters the prayer hall, the grandeur of the interior continues to captivate. The vast hall adorned with chandeliers, Persian carpets, and Arabic calligraphy on the walls exudes a sense of serenity. The central mihrab, intricately designed and beautifully embellished, serves as the focal point for prayers, drawing worshippers towards it. Visitors of all backgrounds are welcome to admire the mosque's architectural splendor and soak in its peaceful ambiance. The atmosphere is serene, fostering a sense of unity and spirituality, where individuals can find solace irrespective of their beliefs. The mosque not only serves as a place of worship but also plays a crucial role in the community. It hosts various cultural events, religious gatherings, and charitable activities, further solidifying its importance in the lives of the locals. However, the experience might be slightly affected by the crowd during peak prayer times, especially during Fridays and religious festivals. The mosque attracts devotees from various parts of the city, leading to congestion in and around the premises. Moreover, while the mosque holds significant historical value, maintenance and restoration efforts could enhance its preservation for future generations. Some areas show signs of wear and tear, requiring attention to maintain its grandeur. In conclusion, Nakhoda Masjid stands as a symbol of Kolkata's rich cultural heritage and religious tolerance. Its stunning architecture, serene ambiance, and role in the community make it a must-visit for those interested in history, architecture, or seeking a peaceful place for contemplation. Despite minor drawbacks related to crowd management and maintenance, the mosque's beauty and cultural importance make it a noteworthy destination for visitors seeking a glimpse into Kolkata's diverse history and spirituality.

Inside is a superb exhibition of exquisite ornamentation and artistic extravaganza

The mosque was named Nakhoda meaning Mariner.[2][5] Reconstruction work started in 1926 and was completed in 1935. Probably the largest mosque in Kolkata... This is just on Rabindra Sarani... The air around the mosque is abuzz with the complete hustle bustle of wholesale and retail business of so many things... The mosque is also very close to Royal Indian Restaurant, one of the most well known Mughlai food joints in Kolkata... I didn't go inside the mosque... Just went there to enjoy the vicinity and do some photography..

This story goes back a few centuries when Memon businessmen from Kachchh region of Gujarat came to this city with the purpose of establishing meritime trade. As their business flourished, they started many community welfare services. Consequently this mosque was built in 1934. Nakhuda is a Farsi word meaning sailor. The adjacent street of Nakhoda Masjid is called Zakaria Street. It was named after Haji Noor Muhammad Zakaria, the 1st Mutawalli or caretaker of the organisation of the businessmen. Mackintosh Burn Company was assigned to built this mosque. It has magnificent architecture influenced by the Mughals. Nakhoda Masjid becomes crowded during Ramzan not only by the religious worshippers, but also by the travellers and the photographers. Its adjacent Zakaria Street becomes Mecca for the food lovers during this time. I went there last year. The experience was amazing. Source : Anandabazar Online

One of the most beautiful and architecturally reach mosques of Kolkata. The mosque community joined in the Bongo Bongo Andolan (1905) in the call of Rabindranath Tagore. Located on Zakariah Street, the mosque is very close to Boro Bazaar and Jorashako Thakurbari.

Old masjid in Kolkata. The road in front of the masjid is Zakaria Street. This road is famous for panjabi(kurta) and any kind of moglai dish during Ed. This is crowded all the time. If any one is looking for panjabi then consider this place which gives you the best outcome within a reasonable price. Thank you 🙏
