An age-old temple, standing tall in the heart of Kolkata for over three centuries. Even though this temple is small in terms of size, but it's popularity is equivalent to that of the revered Dakshineswar & Kalighat Temples. Everyday hundreds of devotees offer prayers at this sacred site, after purchasing the puja materials and flowers from one of the several shops lined up outside the temple's complex. Please keep in mind that this temple is situated in an extremely crowded & noisy area, near College Street. So, if you are looking for a peaceful & tranquil temple environment, then it's not the perfect place to visit. Recommended. 👍🏻

It is an ancient temple of Ma Kali located in North Kolkata, popularly known as Thanthania Kali Bari. As mentioned in the temple, the temple was established in bengali year 1110, which means the temple is more than 300 years old and it is said that the Kali idol is even older than the temple. Here Ma Kali is worshiped as Siddheshwari Kali. The temple is located at the junction of Bidhan Sarani and Bechu Chatterjee street, quite congested area. There are several shops available outside the temple where you can buy puja items.

Thanthania Kalibari is one of the oldest Kali Temple (Hindu Temple) in Kolkata. Goddess Kali is worshipped here as Ma Siddheshwari. The idol of Ma Kali is extremely beautiful. The temple came into existence in 1703 although some say, the year of formation was 1803. The temple was visited frequently by Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa. The grandson of the founder Shankar Ghosh was Subodh Chandra Ghosh (Swami Subodhananda) one of the direct disciples of Sri Ramakrishna. There are three entrances to the main ‘Garbha Griha'(sanctum sanctorum). There is a small Shivlinga on the left side and a Statue of Sri Ramakrishna on the right. The temple has focused on traditional old Bengali architecture. It is right on crossing of Bidhan Sarani Road and Rajendra Deb lane. There are several shops nearby that sell flowers, incense & sweets for Puja. The nearest metro station is Mahatma Gandhi Road.

Thanthaniya Kalibari is an approximately 320 years old Kali temple on College St in central Kolkata, close to the Thanthaniya Rajbari. Very small temple right off the street, but the deity Ma Siddheswari is revered by the people.

The Thanthania Kalibari was founded by Shankar Ghosh (whose grandson was Swami Subhodhananda,[2] a direct disciple of 19th century mystic Ramakrishna) in 1803, as mentioned in the temple building itself.[3] However, according to a different tradition it was built in 1703. The image of the presiding deity Siddheshwari is made of clay and the idol is painted every year with the colors red and black. Tuesdays and Saturdays are considered auspicious for a visit to the temple. The temple is 300+ years old and the idol is even older.

The Thanthania Kalibari was founded in the year 1803 by Shankar Ghosh. You can visit this temple to worship another form of Goddess Durga, which is known as Siddheshwari. There is a special prayer known as Kali Puja, which attracts a large number of pilgrims. At Thanthania Kalibari, there is a clay image of Goddess Durga which is changed every year by a new one.

Kalibaris of Bengal: The historic and famous Thanthania Kalibari is the temple of Maa Siddheshwari Kali. The temple is more than 300 years old and the deity is over 500 years old. The present temple was estabilished in the year 1803 by Sri Shankar Chandra Ghosh.. It is said, the area was once covered in dense vegetation and frequented by dacoits. To warn the nearby settlements a bell was installed and it was rung when dacoits attacked. The ‘than, than’ (ঠন ঠন) sound of the bell may have been replicated and used in nomenclature of place as ‘Thanthania’.

One of the famous and oldest Goddess Kali’s temple in North Kolkata. It historical too. Thanthania Maa Kali is very generous, she will fulfil your wishes provided you have to be honest and surrender yourself to her. Situated in a crowded place, although darshan is easy but beware of pickpockets & shoe lifter. In rainy season beware of water logging in Ahmarst Street.

This is a 300 years old Kaali temple situated at Bidhan Sarani near College Street area and here Goddess Maa Kaali is worshiped as Maa Siddheshwari. Along with Maa Kaali, Lord Shiva is also worshipped here. This temple was built by Shankar Ghosh at 1803 AD(or 1703 AD). This temple is open for all at seven days a week from 6am to 11am and from 3pm to 8pm. But at Tuesday and Saturday devotees gathered in a large form as these two days are considered auspicious. Outside the temple premises there are so many shops through which you can purchase the dala and flowers to offer Maa Kaali for your Puja. If you want to take the blessings of Maa Kaali and want to spend a day devotionally, then you must visit this place.

When my friend wanted to visit a Kali Mandir , my 89 year old mother suggested to take her to Thanthania Kali Mandir. This was visited by Ramakrishna .Generally this place is quite easily accessible and the view of the idol is clear as the photos will suggest. The place could be kept a bit more cleaner but overall quite good

It is nice to visit 😊 this old Kali temple in north Kolkata. This historic place, still carries the old ambience of bygone era. Famous ' College Square 'is in walking 🚶‍♀️ distance. The history of Thanthania Kalibari says, that much before the city of kolkata was established, a dense forest was there in this area, and dreaded robbers used to roam freely. It is said the decoits used to worship the Goddes of Kali before venturing out and the offering of human blood was their common practice.

This a historic religious landmark in the heart of the Kolkata. It is located in the Bidhan Sarani, in between Vivekananda crossing and College Street more. This is a very crowded place. Actual name of this renowned temple is "Sri Sri Siddheshwari Kali Matar Mandir". It was established more than 300 yrs ago in the year 1110 of Bengali calendar. It is popularly known as "Thanthania Kalibari". This name was derived from the sound of the bell in the temple which sounds similar to "thanthan". Till date it is one the most famous and lively Maa Kali temples of Kolkata along with Kalighat and Dakshineswar. There is also a statue of great Kali sadhak Sri Ramakrishna in the temple besides Maa Kali. Shiv Lingo is also there in the same premises, which is established in 1114 of Bengali calendar. Tuesday and Saturday are regarded as the auspicious day, so more crowd gather on these days of every week. Less number of footfalls are seen on other days. There is option to give "Puja" at ease. One can see and pray to "Maa Kali" from few hands distance. Garland and sweet shops are present outside. Rates are reasonable. If you visit Kolkata, you should visit this temple once and pray to "Maa Kali" for the well being of your family. 🙏🙏🙏

Thanthania Kalibari is a famous Hindu temple located in the heart of Kolkata, West Bengal, India. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Kali, the goddess of power and destruction in Hindu mythology. The history of the temple dates back to the mid-19th century when a group of devout Bengalis built the temple in 1803. The temple has since undergone several renovations and modifications. It is said that the temple's architecture and design were inspired by the famous Dakshineswar Kali Temple in Kolkata, which was built by Rani Rashmoni. The main deity of the temple is Goddess Kali, who is worshipped by devotees from all over the country. The temple complex also houses several other shrines dedicated to other Hindu deities such as Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesha, and Goddess Saraswati. The Thanthania Kalibari is famous for its annual Durga Puja festival, which is celebrated with great pomp and show. During this time, the temple complex is beautifully decorated, and thousands of devotees come to offer their prayers and seek blessings from the goddess. Apart from being a significant religious center, the Thanthania Kalibari is also a popular tourist attraction in Kolkata. Visitors come here to admire the beautiful architecture of the temple, soak in the spiritual ambiance, and learn more about Hindu mythology and culture.

The temple is on Bidhan Sarani, a major bus route, at some distance from the College Street- M.G.Road Crossing. Nearest Bus Stop is Thanthania Kalibari itself. The buses run to the temple, via Bidhan Sarani and M.G. Road are 47, S3A, S3B, 21, 28 and 44 and take from 33 minutes to 46 minutes from Sealdah. Fare is more or less Rs. 10. There is a huge auto service to the temple from Sealdah. Auto fare is almost the same as the fare of buses. ‘Cab’ service is also available from any part of Kolkata. The temple can be reached by Heritage Kolkata Tram from Esplanade Terminus running to Shyambazar Depot. Nearest Tram Stop is Thanthania Kalibari. Kolkata Metro can reach you so easily and comfortably, but there is not any direct Metro station. The nearest Metro station is M.G. Road. Then follow Muktaram Baby Street till Bidhan Sarani(750mtrs.) and turn right, or riding the famous hand-pulled rickshaw of Kolkata. Though this temple does not owe any mythological backdrop, it obviously carries a historical background yet. Since, the tenure of the establishment of this temple is contradictory, because of that it is not sure that whether this temple was during the British reign or not. Not only that, this temple started its journey along with an utmost significance of the world, especially of the Bengalis due to the mystic typification, Shree Shree Ramkrishna Paramhansa. At last, it will not be an exaggeration that this temple wields the thinking, feeling and emotion of the Bengalis. *****"COPIED

Thanthania Kalibari is a Kali temple on Bidhan Sarani in Kolkata. The deity in the temple is known as Siddheshwari. The plaque on the top of the temple dates the temple back to 1110 Bengali Year (১১১০ বঙ্গাব্দ) or approximately 1703 AD. A marble tablet installed on the inside of the temple reiterates the above date and credits Babu Shankar Ghosh for the erection of the temple. On the contrary, as per HEA Cotton’s Calcutta Old and New (P 981) the Siddheswari Kali idol at Thanthania in Cornwallis Street (now renamed to Bidhan Sarani) was established by one Brahmachari named Udaynarayan .Babu Shankar Chandra Ghosh of Thanthania erected the present temple in 1210 Bengali Year approximately 1803 AD The idol of the presiding deity Siddheshwari is made of clay and the idol is painted every year with the colors red and black. Tuesdays and Saturdays are considered auspicious for a visit to the temple. The temple is 300+ years old, and the idol is even older. Must have darshan
