St Andrew's Church also known as the Kirk is the only Scottish church in Kolkata and was opened to the public only on March 8, 1818. The foundation stone was laid on November 30, 1815 by Marquis of  Hastings. The Countess of Moira and the Countess of  Loudon attended the stone laying ceremony. In 1835, the clock fitted to the tower. It was designed by M/s Burn, Currie & Co. It was also known as "laat sahib ka girja" (the church of the Governor). Probably the name derived from the fact that the foundation stone was laid by the wife of the Governor General, Marquis of Hastings. St Andrew's Church was built just at the site of Old Court House which was demolished in 1792.

This is a pretty small church located on Dalhousie crossing just opposite of the Writer's Building. The church is well maintained and adds to the charm of the place. Due to the Writer's and the church being in close vicinity, the places seems very historic. The place is 15 mins bus ride from Howrah station.

The Calcutta of 1815 was the seat of authority of The Honourable The East India Company and the most important of its settlements. The Governor General of India at this time was the Earl of Moira (afterwards the Marquis of' Hastings), and the Scottish community in Calcutta, including the military, was an important segment of the European population. In the early days The East India Company had no set ecclesiastical establishment but apparently each ship carried a chaplain and latterly some ministers were brought out to the various settlements who were of the Episcopal Church of England. As the number of Presbyterians grew, the demand for their own ministers became more clamant. The Company were under no obligation to appoint chaplains but they were God fearing men and one cannot read the old records without seeing how great a value they placed on the observance of religious duty both amongst themselves and amongst those they employed. The earliest record of an appointment of a chaplain is in 1607 and the number of churches gradually grew with the growth of the establishment. For years, men like Claudius Buchanan in India and William Wilberforce in England had been protesting against the Company's restrictive attitude towards Christian missionary work, and in 1813 Parliament insisted that the Company grant facilities for missionaries to work freely in India.

A beautifully maintained, well decorated church, situated amidst the most viable route of the city. Thus, it is very convenient for the visitors to have a glance. Sundays, morning at 10, the church organises regular weekly prayer. So, take a note of the time.

A beautiful church of early eighteen hundreds has a white facade with an inspiring spire. The church is located in a major junction of the city adjacent to the 'Writers Building'. It has imposing pillars at the entrance - both in the front and the backsides. Church offices are located at the entrance. The church has an elevated pulpit and a semi circular seating arrangement built using classic ebony wood. The pew chairs have woven seats. It has a semicircular balcony for patrons. Its walls bear a number of plaques and plates of marble and stone put up for dedication and remembrance. One such plaque has been put up by Calcutta Police on the first Police Commemoration Day. It has lots of stories to tell for the coming generations.

This Presbyterian church is a landmark building of central kolkata. Situated in the north east corner of 'Laldighi '(erstwhile Dalhousie square),St. Andrew's church was built in the year of 1818. The then ruler of India, East India Company under Governor General lord Moira funded rupees one lakh to its foundation. Initially the church was under the influence of the church of Scotland . Several decades later in 1970 , it joined the union of church of North India ( CNI ).

The land for the St. John's Church was donated by the Maharaja Nabo Kishen Bahadur, the founder of the Shovabazar Raj Family. The foundation stone was laid by Warren Hastings, the Governor General of India on 6 April 1784. Two marble plaques at the entrance mark the two historic events. Built by architect James Agg, the St John's church is built with a combination of brick and stone and was commonly known as the "Pathure Girja"[4] (Stone Church). Stone was a rare material in the late 18th century Kolkata. The stones came from the medieval ruins of Gour, and were shipped down the Hooghly River. The minutes book in the church office tell in detail the story of how the ruins of Gaur were robbed to build St John's church.[2]St. John's Church, originally a cathedral, was among the first public buildings erected by the East India Company after Kolkata (Calcutta) became the effective capital of British India.[1] It is located at the North-Western corner of Raj Bhavan, and served as the Anglican Cathedral of Calcutta till 1847, when the see was transferred to St. Paul's Cathedral. Construction of the building, modelled on St Martin-in-the-Fields of London,[2] started in 1784, with Rs 30,000 raised through a public lottery,[3] and was completed in 1787. It is the third oldest church in the city, next to the Armenian and the Old Mission Church.[4]
