I loved the view. There are no entry fees for this ghat. It's open from 5-11 pm. The best time to visit would be in the evening. You can feel the soft breeze as well as get the advantage of witnessing the sunset which is to die for. Mostly, couples hang around here, but ya, it is a lovely place to visit with your near ones.

Loved the vibe of this place. A good place to chill and relax in the evening near the river. We have also taken an half an hour long boat ride that costs 400 rupees for two person (Well, we could have bargained). The boat ride experience was superb!!!

Great place. If the weather is right you are going to enjoy this place a lot. The second Hooghly bridge with the Ganges flowing below is a killer combination. You can also enjoy a boat ride here.

Princep Ghat is a pretty well maintained, beautiful site to see in Calcutta. It's one of the best this city has to offer, the sunsets here are the best thing on earth and this place has amazing food and good areas to take pictures, but with that being said, this is not a place you wanna go with family or any relatives. You'll find crowds making out in the open and hooking up. It's a public place, mind you. That's what disgusts me about this place. You'll find it everywhere throughout the ghat, just random guys and girls trying to get it. P.S - If you are someone who does go there to makeout, PLEASE FIND A PRIVATE SPACE. I DON'T WANNA SEE YOU TRYING TO TOUCH A GIRL INAPPROPRIATELY. STOP IT.

Very nice place to enjoy boat ride and sunset. One can also the soft breeze flowing from the Ganges in the dusk. Several cruise rides are also there having different rates. Lighting of the place could have been better as it gets very dark after evening.

Surprisingly the place was much quieter this Sunday. The memorial is nowadays barricaded with iron railings and not accessible to common people. However, both the memorial and the area around it is being nicely maintained by the authorities. IDK why the ghat is also barricaded and public were not allowed to access the river water there. All in all a good place for photo op and half a day family outing. N.B.- pl take adequate safety measures if you have kids as a relatively busy railway line crosses between the memorial and the ghat.

Place adjacent to Prinsep Ghat Railway Station. Such a romantic place for couples. You can have a great time here with friends also. One cannot fathom how to pass the time in the mesmerizing green, calm and pleasant surroundings on the banks of the Ganges. The chirping of birds, the breeze of the Ganges soothes the body and mind. Best time to visit here is afternoon to evening. There is no entrance fee. However, this ghat offers hand-pulled boat rides on the banks of the Ganges, which are cost-effective (bargaining is best). Toilet facilities are available here.

The ghats are clean and the river bank is maintained very well. Washroom is also available there. If you wanna ride boats negotiate the value with them. Skip weekends to avoid crowds.

It is an iconic location in the city for a variety of reasons and the most important one is the heritage it holds. It was built in the year 1841, during the British Raj in India. The ghat has been named after an ingenious Anglo-Indian researcher and scholar, James Prinsep after whom this was built.

A very beautiful place to visit in the city. It's most pretty during sunset when the mesmerizing Vidyasaagar Setu crisscrosses over it through pink sky. Generally a hotshot couple spot but it gets very crowded during holidays, precisely during Christmas week and New Year's.

Amazing view , cool breeze from the Ganges , many ghats and sitting places ,boat rides available , traditional Bengali boats for rent. The only problem is reaching the spot. Almost no busses go by this place. A very lucrative tourist place yet not maintained properly. Young kids should avoid since adult contents are continuously occuring behind the umbrella and bushes.

Prinsep Ghat is a ghat built in 1841 during the British Raj, along the Kolkata bank of the Hooghly River in India. The Palladian porch in the memory of the eminent Anglo-Indian scholar and antiquary James Prinsep was designed by W. Fitzgerald and constructed in 1843.Prinsep Ghat is one of the oldest recreational spots of Kolkata. People visit it in the evenings on weekends to go boating on the river, stroll along the bank and purchase food from stalls there. A 2-kilometre (1.2 mi) stretch of the beautified riverfront from Prinsep Ghat to Babughat (Baje Kadamtala Ghat) was inaugurated on 24 May 2012.It has illuminated and landscaped gardens and pathways, fountains and renovated ghats. One of the songs in the Bollywood film Parineeta was shot here on the ghats.

Beautiful location to spend your evening at. Nice lawn to spend time with your family alongside the Princep Monument. You can take a walk alongside the Hooghly river. The view of the 2nd Hooghly bridge is also amazing from here. Boat rides are quite famous here. The rates keep of fluctuating but roughly it costs Rs 400-500 for half an hour boat ride. These are traditional boats maneuvered by chappu. Gives a difference experience altogether. Must visit in the evening.

(Translated by Google) Of the many installations, the Princep Ghat was my favorite. The Princep Ghat was built on the banks of the Hooghly River in 1843 in memory of the British Anglo-Indian Scholar and Archaeologist James Princep. Princep Ghat is a great example of cleanliness. We can learn from this how to clean and maintain archeological resources. If you have time, you can visit this installation. You will like it. If you ever visit Kolkata, don't forget to spend some peaceful moments in this romantic place away from the hustle and bustle of the city. This Princep Ghat, with its spectacular photographic scenery, was built on the banks of the Hooghly River during the British rule. Combining Greek and Gothic architectural styles, the monument commemorates James Princep, a member of the British Army. Numerous movies and songs have been shot in the place. The time of sunrise and sunset is ideal. Don't forget to float in the boat in the Ganges after sunset. The Vidyasagar bridge over the river has given the background of Prinsep Ghat an extraordinary beauty. Nice place to spend time with family and loved ones....Erected on the banks of Hooghly swash in Greek style devoted to James Princep. This is located beneath Vidyasagar Setu and is illuminated every night. There is a swash walk for 2 Kms towards Howrah ground. Voyaging is available at Princep ghat, fishing boats veritably tastefully lit. Along the walkway merchandisers have set shops dealing snacks, tea and water. Near the honorary, close to the road track, toilets for men and women are available. To reach Princep ghat, one can drive or ride, take Uber/ Ola or Rapido. There is no devoted parking available then and callers situate their vehicles on the road coming to the main boundary wall of the swash walk. One can also take the original train to Khidirpur and get down at Princep ghat station. The place is generally crowded until late night and meadows are available for callers to sit and relax or for easy street.

Tranquil Oasis on the Hooghly: James Prinsep Ghat, Kolkata It's a place where you can sit for a moment, and the day will pass in a jiffy. Nestled along the banks of the Hooghly River, James Prinsep Ghat in Kolkata is a serene retreat that seamlessly blends history, culture, and a picturesque setting. My recent visit to this charming ghat left me enchanted by its riverside beauty and captivated by the historical significance that graces its shores. James Prinsep Ghat, a historical landmark offers a tranquil escape from bustling city life, providing visitors with a serene riverside ambiance. The gentle lapping of the river against the ghats, coupled with a refreshing breeze, creates an idyllic atmosphere for those seeking a peaceful respite. Named after the British antiquary and scholar James Prinsep, the ghat is steeped in history. Prinsep played a crucial role in deciphering ancient scripts and inscriptions, and the ghat pays homage to his contributions. The presence of an iconic Greek-style structure adds a touch of historical grandeur to the surroundings. The Princep Memorial, an architectural masterpiece standing tall at the ghat, is a visual delight. The memorial, built in the memory of James Prinsep, boasts Greco-Roman influences and intricate detailing. Its picturesque location makes it a popular backdrop for photographers capturing the essence of Kolkata's historical charm. The ghat features a well-maintained riverfront promenade that invites leisurely strolls along the Hooghly. The view of the iconic Howrah Bridge and the Vidyasagar Setu from the ghat enhances the overall experience, providing a mesmerizing panorama of Kolkata's architectural landmarks. Adjacent to the ghat is the Prinsep Ghat Jetty, serving as a boarding point for river cruises along the Hooghly. This allows visitors to explore the city from a unique perspective, offering a delightful blend of history, culture, and scenic beauty as they cruise along the river. The evening at James Prinsep Ghat is a spectacle of lights and colors. As the sun sets, the ghat comes alive with vibrant hues, creating a romantic and enchanting ambiance. Horse-drawn carriages and boat rides add a touch of old-world charm, making it an ideal spot for couples, families, and solo travelers alike. The ghat often serves as a cultural hub, hosting various events and activities. From art exhibitions to cultural performances, James Prinsep Ghat fosters a vibrant and inclusive space for locals and tourists to engage with Kolkata's rich cultural heritage. One cannot help but appreciate the cleanliness and maintenance of James Prinsep Ghat. The well-kept surroundings, clean pathways, and organized seating areas contribute to a positive and welcoming environment. James Prinsep Ghat is a gem on the Hooghly, offering a harmonious blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Whether you're a history enthusiast, a nature lover, or someone seeking a quiet escape in the heart of Kolkata, this ghat is a must-visit destination. My time at James Prinsep Ghat was a delightful immersion into the soul of Kolkata, and I wholeheartedly recommend it for an enriching and rejuvenating experience.

Amazing place to spend the afternoon during winters... boat ride along the Ganges a must experience for every calcuttans as well as those visiting here as visitors must go for the ride...Very highly recommended to take a boat ride and watch the ganga aarti from the middle of the river...you can hire from either princep ghat or that of babughat . Can guarantee you that the ride can be surreal. Enjoy the leisure walks along the ghats of princep or that of its gardens with many different sounds of birds...variety of food stalls selling pav bhaji, phuchka , chaa, chat, ice cream is found stretched along the ghat. The most prominent food joint is "SCOOP" which is a must try . Prinsep Ghat, located on the banks of River Hooghly, is a majestic structure famous for its Greek/ Gothic inlays. The beauty of Princep Ghat draws architecture and history buffs in large numbers, but even locals visit to absorb the regal vibe of the attraction. With the magnificent Howrah Bridge in the background, watching the sunrise or sunset and taking a long walk in the cool air on the banks of the river are some of the preferred recreational activities here. During the British Rule, it was used by the staff of the British Royals as a jetty for loading and unloading passengers and essential items. The ghat is located between Fort William and the Water Gate and is often visited by tourists exploring these attractions. Prinsep Ghat is one of the few locations that have been restored to maintain the pre-independence aura. It is, therefore, a favourite amongst photographers especially for pre-wedding shoots. In between exploring the attraction, if one feels like grabbing a bite, there are several food kiosks to choose from that serve scrumptious local snacks. Prinsep Ghat is sure to be the highlight of one’s trip to Kolkata.

Loved the vibe of this place. A good place to chill and relax in the evening near the river. We have also taken an half an hour long boat ride that costs 400 rupees for two person (Well, we could have bargained). The boat ride experience was superb!!!

You want serenity and nice ambience away from the Kolkata crowd, then definitely it's your go to place. Just hold a pack of snacks and enjoy the rover view early morning or late afternoon and have a walk or idle seating there. Nice work by the municipality there to facilitate this place like a park. Visitors can also go in. Easily reachanle via taxi or trains.

This is just beautiful. Very well developed by the corporation. The river on one side with boats roaming around. They there is a really long walk way. This has been nicely laid out. It is fully covered with big trees and so it remains cool. It is also very clean with animal shaped garbage bins provided at frequent intervals. On the other side is the tracks of the local train service followed by the main road. This is must visit for those who love calm and quiet. You can just sit there and relax. For foodies, there are also some food stalls.

Princep Ghat is located between the Water Gate and St. George’s Gate of Fort William beside the Hooghly River. The monument is one of the finest examples of colonial architecture in Kolkata. It might seem that Princep Ghat was not a proper ghat as it is located some distance away from the river. But earlier, there were some stone steps leading to the river. With time, the river has receded and the stone stairs are perhaps buried under the earth.

Good Place to chill out. Caution: If you are a first timer at this place, consider PDA (Public Display of Affection) normal at this place. My advice, don't stare at those intense intimacy. The view and of this place and the Vidyasagar Setu or The New Howrah Bridge is amazing. Yes, expect humidity a lot at this place in specific and Kolkata in general. So, a must visit place.

The pathways surrounding the ghat has comfortable benches to enjoy the scenic beauty of the ghat. You can also enjoy delicious street food along the way. There is also an opportunity to take a boat ride for an hour in the nearby boats as boatmen are ever so ready to take you down the stream. The area is beautiful and has a gorgeous view of the sunset from various ghats. It's a clean place with lots to do.

James Prinsep Ghat in Kolkata is a significant historical site that offers a unique blend of architectural splendor, thoughtful planning, and captivating tourist attractions. Here's a review of James Prinsep Ghat's architecture, planning, and tourist attractions: Architecture: James Prinsep Ghat showcases an exquisite architectural style that combines elements of colonial and Indo-Saracenic design. The ghat's imposing structure features elegant arches, intricately carved columns, and ornate domes, reflecting the grandeur of the bygone era. The use of red brickwork adds to its visual appeal and makes it stand out along the banks of the Hooghly River. The architectural details and craftsmanship are a testament to the rich heritage and history of Kolkata. Planning: The planning of James Prinsep Ghat is well-thought-out to provide an engaging experience for both tourists and locals. The ghat is strategically located on the banks of the river, offering panoramic views of the Hooghly and the iconic Howrah Bridge. The wide promenade allows visitors to take leisurely strolls and soak in the serene atmosphere. The ghat also provides ample seating areas where people can relax, enjoy the view, and engage in conversations. The well-maintained gardens and landscaping add to the overall charm of the place. Tourist Attractions: Apart from its architectural beauty, James Prinsep Ghat offers several tourist attractions that make it a popular destination. The ghat is home to the Prinsep Memorial, an impressive structure dedicated to James Prinsep, a renowned British scholar and archaeologist. The memorial is a blend of Egyptian, Greek, and Gothic architectural styles and serves as a reminder of Prinsep's contributions to the field of art and culture. Moreover, the ghat serves as a starting point for river cruises along the Hooghly River. Tourists can embark on boat rides to explore the river, enjoy scenic views, and witness the bustling activities on the riverbanks. The ghat area also hosts cultural events, fairs, and festivals, which provide a glimpse into Kolkata's vibrant cultural heritage. Additionally, the nearby Millennium Park, located just across the river, offers recreational activities, including boat rides and a riverside promenade. It serves as an extension of the attractions available at James Prinsep Ghat, providing visitors with more options for entertainment and relaxation. Overall, James Prinsep Ghat in Kolkata impresses with its architectural brilliance, thoughtful planning, and captivating tourist attractions. It is a place where history, culture, and natural beauty converge, offering visitors a delightful experience and an opportunity to connect with Kolkata's rich heritage.

Such a beautiful sight! Just a walk around this place is so blissful. Definitely a spot to spend an evening. Few you cross the railway path and walk a little ahead there is a park and few boat rides. Definitely worth the experience.

Had such an amazing evening there. Spent very little time there due to paucity of time but it was such a mesmerizing memory. Located between the Water Gate and the St George's Gate of the Fort William, the monument to Prinsep is rich in Greek and Gothic inlays. It was restored by the state's public works department in November 2001 and has since been well-maintained. In its initial years, all royal British entourages used the Prinsep Ghat jetty for embarkation and disembarkation.

  • 4/5 Sayak D. 8 months ago on Google
My visit to James Prinsep Ghat in Kolkata was a serene and picturesque experience that offered a unique perspective on the city's historical and cultural significance. Situated along the banks of the Hooghly River, this ghat is a tranquil spot that provides a pleasant escape from the urban hustle. The stunning view of the river and the iconic Howrah Bridge made for a perfect backdrop, creating a peaceful ambiance that was perfect for relaxation and contemplation. The evening sunset over the water was a sight to behold, making it a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. The ghat's historical importance, named after the British scholar and antiquary James Prinsep, added to its allure. The various monuments and statues dotted around the area provided valuable insights into Kolkata's rich past and its connection to the river. The only drawback was the cleanliness of the ghat, which could have been improved. Some areas appeared littered and in need of better maintenance, which affected the overall experience. Overall, James Prinsep Ghat is a delightful spot to unwind and soak in the city's charm. With a bit of attention to cleanliness and upkeep, it has the potential to become an even more enchanting destination, worthy of a full five-star rating.

Very good place to have walk. I have seen many couples around here kissing huging etc in the evening. I guess its quite good. I believe we are progressing in this thing😂 Anyways, place is just beside the hoogly river. There are a lot of trees around. You can have a few street foods there. Can do boating and rent it out for a few hours. You can reach here via train as well as bus/cab. A perfect view of bridge from here.

  • 5/5 Sonal A. 4 months ago on Google
it is a beautiful place to visit anytime either sunset or sunrise. The water is so calm and the view of the bridges on both sides is mesmerising. Also, enjoy the boat ride for 30 minutes in the evening. The cost is 400/- for a maximum of five people. Although there is not entry fee to the ghat. There are small eateries where you can also savour Kolkata chat and a cup of tea. Free toilet facilities are available. Its a long path along Hooghly river. One can enjoy walking or jogging and feel the cool breeze. Must recommend if you are in Kolkata. I got a very little time to spend there. If got chance, spend couple of hours. Dont think its for only couple, as you may see more of them, but singles can enjoy being SINGLE too..hahhaha. How to reach: bus/cab/train are easily available.

James Prinsep Ghat, located along the banks of the Hooghly River in Kolkata, is a serene and historically significant destination. The ghat is named after James Prinsep, a 19th-century scholar who played a key role in deciphering ancient Indian scripts. The ghat's architecture showcases a blend of colonial and Indian styles, offering a picturesque setting for visitors. It serves as a peaceful escape from the bustling city, with a view of the river that adds to the tranquility. The adjacent Prinsep Ghat Park is a delightful spot for a leisurely stroll. One of the main attractions is the Prinsep Ghat Monument, an intricately designed structure that stands as a testament to Kolkata's rich history. The ghat also provides boat rides on the Hooghly, allowing visitors to enjoy the cityscape from a unique perspective. Overall, James Prinsep Ghat is not just a riverside attraction; it's a cultural and historical gem that provides a refreshing experience for those seeking a blend of serenity and heritage in the heart of Kolkata.
