If you would like to visit a church that has stood the test of time, a place that has seen the glory of the bygone era, then wait no further. This extraordinary church is an archaeological marvel, a place that is filled with divinity and spirituality to the extent of enhancing your mental well-being. Come here to experience solitude, peace and tranquility in a city that is filled with chaos, noise and verbal pollution. Here, you can sit inside the church for hours, unperturbed, read the pages from the Holy Bible, or simply go through the priceless inscriptions carved out on white marbles. I would rate this magnificent Church as one of my favourite destinations to visit in Kolkata. Highly recommended. 👍☺️

I don’t think this is as famous as the St Paul’s Cathedral (Belongs to the Church of North India) but it definitely deserves a mention when we talk about historical places in Calcutta. This is a Catholic Cathedral. What attracted me the most here is the Chandelier on a stand (two in number). I was told they are very old but how old? The Plaques and carvings on the pillars inside the church too are unique. In the balcony, one can see an old style organ which is no longer used.

The Cathedral of the Most Holy Rosary, commonly known as the Portuguese Church, in Kolkata, is the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Calcutta. It is also known as the Murgihata Church and was founded in 1799..... The cathedral has a decorated pediment, flanked on either side by two domed towers and an extended portico with arched entrance way. The interior contains beautiful sculptures including 14 Stations of the Cross. Behind the altar, there are the figures of Madonna and Child. The remains of the first Archbishop of Calcutta lie below the altar..... Job Charnock founded the city of Kolkata in 1690. Portuguese from Hooghly settled in the new town. They constructed a chapel and were attended by Augustinian priests. The Cathedral was founded in 1797. In 1799, the chapel was replaced by the church which is used today as the cathedral. It was the main Church of the Padroado in Kolkata till 1834, when it became the first parish Church of the newly erected Vicariate Apostolic of Bengal. The Salesians took over charge from the Jesuits in 1921 and they, in turn, handed it over to the diocesan clergy in 1972. In 1979, the cathedral annexe was constructed.

Also known as the Portuguese Church... Historical evidences indicate that the Portuguese arrived in Kolkata much before Job Charnock... The first Portuguese place of worship in Kolkata dates back to the late 17th century...consisted of a mud hut...in 1700 it was converted into a brick structure... In 1757 Lord Clive expelled the Portuguese from Kolkata and the Catholic Portuguese Chapel was converted into an Anglican Protestant Chapel... The new church...which exists to this day...was opened to public on 27th November 1799... Dedicated to Rosary Virgin Mary...the Portuguese Church serves as a Cathedral Church for the Catholic Christian’s of Kolkata... The entry gate remains encroached by roadside vendors...but once inside you will feel you are inside a different world...

This is an old Cathedral built by the Portugese before the independence of India. It stands tall even after so many years as a symbol of love, caring and sharing of our Saviour.

The Cathedral was closed and the watchman would not allow us inside. It is highly unusual for a Catholic Church to be locked and access to the public restricted. Reasoning with the watchman was useless and the church administrators should post notices with their approved visit timings.

Had an extremely unpleasant experience at this place today. The security guy was most hostile, rude and arrogant. There were a lot of drivers actually eating at the door to the cathedral but he would not allow us to even enter the porch. Unless there was something illegal, nefarious or devious was taking place when I visited there should have been no reason for such unwarranted hostility.

I recently had the privilege of visiting the Cathedral of The Most Holy Rosary, and I must say it was an awe-inspiring experience that touched my soul in profound ways. Nestled in a quiet corner of the city, this magnificent cathedral stands tall as a beacon of spirituality, offering solace and tranquility to all who enter its hallowed doors. As I approached the cathedral, its imposing architecture instantly commanded my attention. The intricate detailing and the sheer grandeur of the building left me in awe. The beautifully carved stone facade, adorned with delicate sculptures and majestic stained glass windows, served as a testament to the exquisite craftsmanship of the artisans who dedicated their talents to its creation.

A beautiful house of the holy father in the city, situated in a congested area on the side of a busy main road but having a calm and peaceful environment inside the building. The only Portuguese church in the city, existed in various forms since 1690, but has always experienced some friction with the British. Many Portuguese migrants to India took native wives, and their offspring came to be known as Kintal. Many of these Kintals moved to Calcutta in search of fortune, and the East India Company allowed them to settle in specific areas near the river. Since the Kintals were the only people in India then breeding and selling fowl, the area they settled in is known as “Moorgeeghata” or “the fowl market” even today. Job Charnock had originally granted 10 bighas of land to the Roman Catholics of the Augustinian order to set up a mass hall in the area. But when in 1693 Sir John Goldsborough of the East India Company found the company’s Protestant factors were converting to Roman Catholicism in the mass hall and taking native wives, he ordered them out. The friars would return on his death only 6 months later, and this time they erected a brick Church, a little further away from the original mass hall, and this is where the Portuguese Church or The Cathedral of the Most Holy Rosary stands today. The most interesting thing is, there is no restrictions for the photography loving people to click their mobile camera everywhere.

This Church is the most beautiful church in the Kolkata area. Very well maintained inside but outside the vendors cover up at the sides. The church is a must visit place during Christmas. Its Portuguese style Architecture makes it in the list of Kolkata's Architecture gem. The church is one of the representation of Kolkata's diversity.
