Folklore academy is a good place to visit if you are interested in theyyam and other folk items that use to be there in our society long before. Mostly visited by forgein people than local public. The main objective of the akademi is to promote and project the traditional art forms of Kerala. Here they conduct some festivals of Kerala traditional folklore arts. Fantastic folklore museum is also here.

You can get to know about the different cultures and traditions followed across Kerala. The tour include a short video which showcases about 100s of Theyyam!

The museum is dissappointing. Most of the exhibits have no explanatory notes . No proper guidence. The museum should be in the front side of the building and office at its back . It seems that the authorities are giving only minimum importance to the museum . Only a very few visiters as per the register maintained.

Kerala Folklore academy exhibits traditional art forms of Kerala. There are details of a wide range of Theyyams of North malabar, which is helpful for students and researchers. Also there are details of many local art forms. There is an entry charge for visitors, also separate charge for cameras. Also books published by the Folklore academy is available.

A lovely little gem by the Chirakkal lake that celebrates Theyyam and other cultural expressions that form part of the region’s heritage. I’ve been here twice and both times the vibrancy of the exhibits coupled with the serenity of the place left indelible impressions.

Kerala folklore academy is a museum present in chirakkal kannur district you can find a variety of old age things and items inside there at the entrance you can find some theyyam sculptures and when you enter inside nothing variety u can find some ancient things but nothing much they will charge 30 rs per head i don't think it's worth for 30 per head because there is nothing variety to see in the inside of its 10 rs per head it's ok but the price to enter is too much high ..... For that u can visit payyambalam or somewhere else

Kannur is the headquarters of folklore. The academy has a variety of ancient literary, art and folkloric remains. Situated in the eastern shore of great ChirKkal Chira, the building is one of the remains of old local dynasty the Chirakkal rulers. A walk through the academy will give a visitor, a brief picture of ancient folklore

Has a museum which has a collection of sculptures on kerala folka arts, especially various theyyams. Also there is a library on the first floor, where there is a decent collection of books on folk studies.

Right in the heart of the geography where my clan belongs... Good attempt at preserving knowledge of the North Malabar folklore, but more scientific practices need to be introduced. Staff are very helpful.

Located near Chirakkal chirra, the view inside and outside the folklore museum is beautiful. It is a well maintained folklore museum which has preserved the artefacts of Theyyams, accessories etc very neatly. Overall a good attempt to conserved the models of traditional art forms under one roof. Only one thing, the English placards have several spelling and grammar mistakes. If that is taken care of it would be great too 😊

Kerala Folk Lore Academy is located in Kannur near New Street, Chirakkal Kovilakam, Kadalai Sri Krishna Temple, Chirakkal Railway Station and Mathilakam Temple. The wide presence of chirakal chira makes this building more beautiful. There is a visual representation of several Theya Kolams here. The museum is very impressive.
