I ordered yaki soba with New York strip rare. What I was given was well done rump roast. The meat was flavorless like it had been boiled. While the California roll tasted fresh the meat ruined my opinion.

I often stop in at Yamato for lunch after going to the doctor or shopping in Carbondale. It's good for a quick bite or a more extensive dinner. The folks who run it are quite friendly, and they have added bubble tea to their menu offerings. It's not fancy high end sushi, and it's not one of those Japanese places where the hibachi offerings come with a show. It's just a lovely little place for some pan Asian food.

We thoroughly enjoy the food and atmosphere at Yamato every time we done in. Previously, I had always just ordered their hibachi style dinner combos, which are a great deal considering the quantity and quality of the food, but this last trip I decided to try one of their teriyaki bento box deals and loved it. The variety for the box was so nice and each portion was enjoyable. But my favorite part of the experience at Yamato is their miso so and their salad with the ginger dressing. Both are delicious every time and I especially enjoy the unique flavor and texture of the ginger dressing on the salad. Our service has always been good and friendly. Highly recommended local restaurant in Carbondale!

The waiters are wonderful. The portions are good. This is the best fried rice ever! I love their sushi. This is my favorite place in Carbondale to go for a meal because it’s so delicious. It is seasoned well and reasonably priced! Highly recommended.

The food year is pretty good, but it’s slightly overpriced. The staff was very nice and the food came out pretty quickly. I enjoyed my experience overall.

The rolls on the Lover's Boat are really, really good and the salmon was fresh. All dishes good. Note - no alcohol.

This was the first time many of us had sushi, so we were a bit skeptical; we were there for an SIU graduation and the graduate made reservations so we went along with it. It. Was. Amazing!!! We had a large group and they were able to accommodate all of us. Very friendly staff - the chef even came out to speak with us to see how everything was. The food was so beautifully and creatively arranged! It was an art form!! We may need to make a reason to come back to town just so we can go again!

The food was great! I ordered their Yaki Soba and was very pleased with it. It is the best soba I’ve had in a very long time. I also ordered their crab Rangoon and it was also the best I’ve had in a long time. Their wontons are light and crispy and the stuffing was not overly sweet like most places. The sushi was okay. I look forward to trying them again soon.

We love eating here. Dine in or take-home we always have great tasting food! I honestly much prefer this atmosphere to other similar places in the area. It feels quieter when we go, less commercialized, and the staff ALWAYS makes us feel so welcome. The first time we went, I remember loving how fluffy the white rice was. I’m pretty sure I used the word “heavenly” haha. We love the Yamato roll, pink lady, and my husband gets another kind I can’t remember. We do sometimes have a small wait if there are other diners, but I feel their food is worth any minor inconvenience. I didn’t eat sushi before I came to Yamato. Now I always order my own or ask to share if I’m also ordering a main entree. I crave their hibachi chicken often and I wish I lived much closer!

I ordered the lobster rangoons, and there was half a teaspoon of filling in each. It was all wanton wrapper. The miso soup is watered down. The vegetables tempura was two onion rings, three slices of cucumber, and four broccoli fleurettes. Very disappointed.

My niece and I were looking for a restaurant that had little to no wait times since it was the weekend. As soon as we arrived, we were seated. We usually order drinks for the table but they only had water and tea at the moment. The staff is very friendly and will check up on you to make sure everything is good. My only complaint is taste and quality. I ordered a sea scallop hibachi dinner with rice and veggies, they over salted my food. Their shumai is good and the rolls are decent. For myself, I'd rather spend the extra money and go to Fujiyama's.

The service was spot on! The Food was Much better then I was told. MCH BETTER. This is a small restaurant with big ideas. If Yamato Steak House doesn't grow into a larger building/expand I will be very surprised. The Sushi & lobster ragun (appetizer) was amazing.!

Honestly, they have good food, but it's difficult not to feel ripped off. I don't mean because sushi is expensive. I mean because they serve you fillers instead of what you ordered. If the roll includes salmon, you get some filler substance. I ordered a different roll without salmon and got the same substance. I'm done with this place. I wish it never reopened.

I placed a takeout order, when I got to the restaurant I was charged more than what I was quoted online. THERE WAS NO WARNING OF THIS ONLINE, nor did I receive a call/email that my price would change at the restaurant, which is a problem. This is a very deceptive practice, basically a bait and switch. The woman behind the counter was not helpful and mentioned a sign posted which doesn’t mention online orders at all. At best it indicts that a price increase was already applied. She was not sure if/when the website would ever be updated. I tried to explain the increase in price is annoying, but reasonable given the state of the world - THE PROBLEM IS NOT FINDING OUT UNTIL I GET TO THE RESTAURANT. Instead of just apologizing about what could have been seen as a simple failure to communicate, she wanted to argue with me that the sign (not visible while ordering) fixes the problem, which it does not. I would have liked to pay with cash, but I had enough on me for what I was told to pay online and not the increased price I was never forewarned of. I had to use a credit card instead, which I wasn’t super comfortable with. TLDR: Poor customer service and communication. Food was mediocre, go to Fujiyama instead.

My wife and I each ordered the Fillet Mignon meal. We both agreed the steak was very chewy and tough. The flavor was good but you can't convince me that was fillet mignon. I never complain if you look at my reviews but this was not good.

Great, non-chain, Japanese steak house. The best hand rolled sushi in southern Illinois. The owner is the manager, head chef, and rolls all the sushi right at the front counter. Her children make up all of the rest of the staff. Great great food and atmosphere that remains remarkable and adorable.

Yamato Steak House of Japan in Carbondale is so amazing!! We’ve been coming here for awhile but they have so many new things!! Kani salad, crab rangoons with the yummiest sauce, ramen, and so many new rolls! Also the boba is so creamy!! They were always good but I genuinely think this is the best sushi and Asian eats in Southern Illinois 🤩🤩🤩 the service was also so amazing and so kind! Too good to stay away for too long! Back at Yamato Steak House of Japan ! Appetizer was the Soft Shell Crab . Entree was the Salmon Roe (Ikura) Sashimi, Soy Tofu Skin Sashimi (top right), White Tail Roll (bottom) and the Sakura Roll (middle). Topped with shredded radish and an orchid! Absolutely delicious and beautiful ! Service was great! Go check out their new menu 🤤
