Temple is approximately 700 yrs old dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is typical Dravidian style with beautiful carved figures from hindu mythology. Temple was destroyed by the Portuguese and rebuilt over the years. Remains closed from 12:30 00pm to 4 pm. There's no parking, however one can park along the roadside subject to availability of space. Recommended take auto.

This Temple in Chennai is a beautiful spot to feel connected. The detailed carvings and vibrant design make it attractive. People pray to Lord Shiva here with a lot of love. The rituals are colorful, and you can sense the cultural history. Being close to the sea adds an extra touch to the whole experience, making it a must-visit for those who want both peace and culture.

Kapaleeshwarar temple is dedicated to Shiva. Here Shiva is worshiped as Kapaleeshwar & Parvati as Karpagambal. Kapaleeswarar is facing West in the form of Shiva Linga. Karpagambal sannidhi is situated to the north of Kapaleeswarar shrine. It is one among the 64 Swayambhu Lingams in the world. There is an interesting story of how Shiva came to be known as Kapaleeshwara. Shiva inorder to teach Brahma a lesson of humility, nipped one of the heads of Brahma, earning himself the name Kapaleeswarar (Kapalam in Sanskrit means skull) Goddess Uma worshipped Shiva in the form of a peacock (Mayil in Tamil), to free herself from a curse. This is represented on stone in a small shrine under a Punnai tree (Sthala Vriksha) in the temple courtyard. Since Parvati came here as a Mayil, the place was named as Mylapore. Eastern Rajagopuram is 117 ft tall with 3800 beautiful mythological figures. The smaller western Gopuram faces the holy tank known as Kapila theertham. Lord Ganesh appears as Nartana Vinayaka or the dancing Vinayaka Lord Muruga appears as Singaravelan in another shrine. Here he got his Sakthivel (divine weapon) from Goddess Parvati to fight the Asura. An idol of the revered saint Gnanasambandar can be seen at the temple entrance. Also there are bronze carvings of 63 Saivite saints known as the Nayanmars. The annual Brahmotsavam & the Arupathimoovar festival are the 2 most important festivals, celebrated here.

The temple is nice but be weary. One of the people at the temple offered to give us a tour for 500 rupies. The tour was very bad and then this person said the price was 500 rupies for each person in the group. It got really upsetting after that. Also note that you can't wear the shoes inside of the temple grounds. So you will need to leave them outside. And the floor is pretty dirty. Bring some antiseptic whipes.

Go here for a beautiful, divine experience !! Centuries old lord Shiva temple with beautiful sculpted gopurams. The main deity is Lord Shiva and Godesses Parvati. There are other deities too in the temple complex. Best time to avoid crowds would be early morning to get a good darshan. There are small florist shops outside the temple where you can get flowers and coconut for offerings and leave your shoes. No photos and video recording in temple. The temple is in heart of Mylapore so finding parking can be tricky.

Almighty Lord Shiva rules the Mylapore with his huge shower of blessings to all the people. Temple festivals are celebrated here with traditional manner and rules. There are multiple Shiva temples around this Kapaleeshwar temple and famous Mylapore Godess Bhadrakali amman temple is nearby this temple in few distance, must visit. On Navaratri many shops with kollu dolls will kept around temple for sale at reasonable costs and toilet facility also available at back side of the temple nearby temple tank. Some space for parking is available around the temple streets, parking is little problem here.

12pm to 4pm temple closed. The Kapaleeshwarar temple is of typical Dravidian architectural style, with the gopuram overpowering the street on which the temple sits. This temple is also a testimonial for the vishwakarmas sthapathis. There are two entrances to the temple marked by the gopuram on either side. The east gopuram is about 40 m high, while the smaller western gopuram faces the sacred tank.

Architecture of the temple is very magnificent. Very spacious too. There are several idols and temples inside. The shoe stand is adjacent to the temple. Photography is prohibited for some areas. When I visited the crowd was very less. Must visit.

Well maintained and clean temple. Well organised. Special entrance ticket is available for 50 rupees. But you have to buy two tickets. One for amman and another for shiva.
