If you’re visiting Florianopolis, Mercado Público should be a stop on your itinerary. It’s a look back at the historic marketplace which has been recently renovated. Sure, it’s become very touristy, with souvenir shops, but locals also shop lower priced shoes and goods. Another aisle is a fish market which is worth a look to become familiar with the seafood from the region. There are a number of restaurants to have a great meal while sitting back and getting a feel for the vibe, the hustle and bustle of the “centro” or downtown. For a food tip, try a casquinha de Siri, which is a local favorite in which all the meat is removed from a crab, then it’s put back into the shell with some breading and baked. The fried shrimp is also a favorite. Try a caipirinha which is a drink made with cachaca, a Brazilian alcohol made from sugar cane. You can get a caipirinha de limão (lemon), Maracujá (passionfruit), or morango (strawberry) Be warned, it’s a sweet drink because they add sugar. You can ask for (mitar de açúcar) which is half the normal amount of sugar they add. The beer is also served in a plastic cover that keeps the bottle cold. Also great beer. I like original which is light and refreshing.

It's a one-of-a-kind experience. A super-size open air mall of restaurant. All are generally high priced & you pay for the energetic atmosphere that includes LIVE music, well-positioned large TV screens for sports or concert films. High noise level & food was average quality despite above average prices. Still it's a good place for groups.

Nice place to sit down for 1 hour max then it starts to get boaring. As soon as you enter you have people approaching you with menu and requesting you to sit which I find it very annoying. Even if I want to just stand for few seconds and experience the place and feel the place it's not possible because the people working for restaurants make you feel very uncomfortable and then we have to move forward. I think they should let the customer decide on their own. Not everyone who comes there wants to sit and eat. They need to learn this. It's expensive for sure. People who don't value money for sure can sit there and spend their money. It's better to stand far away from this place and look at the movement.

I have been there a couple times and particularly I'm not a fan. The music is too loud, sometimes more than one type at the same time, which makes us have to talk even louder to be heard. Most of the restaurants don't have bathroom, so you have to pay to go to the "public" one, which is not very clean. The food and beverage usually is way too expensive. Once in a while is ok but I'd rather go to other places nearby.

Even with the awful fish smell coming from the nearby fish mongers, this 300 years market is quite fun, you can find an amazing variety of food and snacks I highly recommend the pastel with Caldo de cana (sugar cane fresh juice) its unmissable.

Great market with lots of variety for fresh fish, fine foods and other souvenirs. We had an amazing coxinha, caldo da cana and bolo de carne seca in the centre restaurant section. Great attention by the staff in all the shops we visited.

  • 3/5 Xavier D. 1 year ago on Google
Food is ok, there are only a few options but you can manage to get something to eat. If you have an international credit card, a few business will not be able to charge you, so cash would be needed. All in all an ok option, but there are better places a couple of blocks away.

Good place to buy fresh fish. There are few restaurants with all kind of food, a bit overpriced but well cooked. There are a lot of souvenir shops with very good prices. The annoying thing are the waiters offering the menus all the time, very pushy and a bit annoying.

Nice local market in the middle of the town. Some of the shops kind of pricey but I wouldn't call them very over priced. It was worth to see if you are visiting Floripa. If you don't stay in the downtown I wouldn't really recommend to come here all the way from lagoa or any other parts of the island. Its just good to see if you are already around.
