The American Writers Museum is a must for any living in Chicago an or visitor to the city. I was very impressed with the museum. I had no idea what to expect, but the space was beautiful, interactive, and most of all fun. The museum had a special exhibit called "The Day the World Changed" that focuses on the impact of Chicago's writers. This is a must-see for anyone who loves books and reading! It offers a wealth of information. I highly recommend!!

This place brought so many memories, so many emotions!! Loved every single detail. The Word waterfall, the exhibition of the day. There is so much to do and it is a very interactive visit. My only negative issue was that I had a hard time finding it since there are no proper signs outside and this is in a second floor of what looks like an appartment building. I enjoyed every minute spent.

Very short museum, covers exactly one floor. Offers what it can and overall is a treat to people who really enjoy learning about the history of literature. A lot of the displays are interactive :)

What a wonderful little museum! So incredibly informative and interactive. I could have spent hours here. I have so many notes of books and authors I want to research more. Even the ceiling is well done. Highly recommend!

Somehow I got lucky enough to visit during the inaugural American Writer's Festival. The exhibits were informative, interactive, and overall a wonderful exhibit. They had several speakers throughout the day in-person and online streaming their presentations or live Q&A. I'm not sure if this is normally the case, but while I was there they had the festival split in two museums, the American Writers Museum and Design Museum of Chicago, so you got to enter both for free. Overall had a fun time and highly recommend to my fellow bookworms.

American writers museum holds a wealth of information for those interested in becoming a writer or those that love to read.. the entire museum is interactive, I especially love the squirrel tree in the children’s room. The Word Waterfall is a spectacular display that changes to reflect quotes and images featuring American history. The typewriters set up for patrons can be used to add to a story or type a letter to a loved one. If you want to really digest everything that is offered plan on spending at least an hour.

I was surprised by how interactive it is. It's clear the staff put thought into keeping the museum from being a dry, read-the-walls experience. I spent about 90 mins here on a Friday afternoon before walking around the corner for tacos at Broken English. The museum is on the second floor above Citibank.

A true hidden treasure! I was in town for the Chicago Marathon and wanted to experience something that I hadn't heard about. I found this museum nearby and was super intrigued by the concept. I checked it out and wow! For only being a single floor, it has so much material to absorb and learn about. I enjoyed it so much and learned a lot about American authors, including ones from my home state of Michigan that I never knew about! The layout, interactive pieces, "photo op" sections were all wonderful. I will recommend this museum to anyone in Chicago that wants to experience something new and different!

What a lovely little museum. Small, but if you take your time, you could easily have a 3+ hour visit on your hands. Lots of information and knowledge throughout. You'll see a lot of the history of American literature and notable American authors. The children's room seems like it would be fun for young kids. I think the rest of the museum might be a little difficult for them if they are not reading proficiently, but it could be a great opportunity to get them interested in literature. The 1-star reviewers saying the museum is boring should re-evaluate their literary competence and appreciation. :)

8/10 ++ A lot of super interesting information Well organized chronologically __ Could have been more interactive/ I expected to also see more items, especially in the first room. I literally spent at least 40 minutes just reading, which not everyone will want to do when visiting I thought some important authors were missing, example Hunter S. Thompson. I was disappointed by the museum store. I had read about so many amazing authors and book and expected to be able to buy said books, but the store only had a few books and very few other items.

We came here on a whim looking for something new to do in Chicago and it totally surpassed our expectations. Lots to see are read but not dry or boring. I loved the hands on aspects and the exhibits that incorporated technology. Will be back when we have more time!

If you're a writer, go here! If you love reading and learning, go here! If you want to experience a contemporary museum, go here!! I love this place so much. I felt like I was flying after I left. As a Writer, I felt inspired and uplifted. It was the most technically saavy museum I've been to. It represents what the future of learning can be if we use the resources. They had everything I could imagine being necessary in such a modern museum. I can't wait to go back seriously. Only thing I regret is it took me so long to go

This museum was bigger and better than I expected. There were also a lot more visitors than I expected. There is currently an exhibit of African American writers as well as an exhibit of Chicago writers and some interactive displays throughout the museum.

This well-curated interactive display was impressively staffed by two young inquiring writers who researched our questions as we enjoyed the exhibits. One area is reserved for a special (rotating) feature, in our case an impressive collection entitled "Dark Testament: A Century of Black Writer's on Justice." A special reading corner is set aside for parents and young children. Both self-guided and guided (3 p.m.) yours are available. We spent two hours there and could have happily spent two more. Kudos!

This museum is a gem! I was already looking forward to visiting it based in the pictures I saw, but it is even better in person. The American writers exhibition is very detailed without being boring. It is visually appealing and interactive. My 4 year old was entertained watching the videos available and playing with the lights projected on the wall. The exhibition about writing was equally interesting albeit smaller. This museum is a must see in Chicago.

What an amazing little space! If you have ever enjoyed reading a book, you will love this place. It’s so deeply and thoughtfully interactive, detailed, beautiful, and fun. We only had an hour to visit which was not nearly enough to do everything we wanted to do! The person at the front desk offered for us to come back later in the day on our same admission ticket if we had extra time. If you’re visiting downtown Chicago, this is a great place to stop, including with children! Highly recommended!

Loved it! If you love reading or writing or even just want an interesting museum to check out, you have to go. It is so interactive, and has some interesting info on your favorite authors or ones you've never heard of but will be intrigued to know more about. Plus the second half is all about learning more on how to explore your own literary imagination. Definitely go check it out!

Oh, man! Such a cool concept that I wish existed in more places. As a writing enthusiast I really enjoyed my visit to the American writers museum in Chicago. So much information in it, as well as interactive exhibits that can entertain you for quite some time. Definitely give it a visit if you're into writing, and make sure you leave enough time to write some stuff yourselves!

We enjoyed this place! My family are originally from Montgomery Al, but we're currently here on business and decided to visit the city and ran across this museum. There was so much history concerning very talented writers that I didn't know about. The museum was very nice, cozy and laid back. Me, my husband, daughters, and grandson took pictures of the beautiful art work and we got a chance to type on old fashioned typewriters that was used years and years ago. Way before out time.. Lol! My grandson even read some of Dr Seuss books in the kids museum library. We hope to visit again.

I accompanied my daughter's class on a trip to this museum, and it was a wonderful experience. There is so much to learn while at this museum. The staff was great and very hands on. We will definitely go back soon.

Absolutely loved my museum visit! So much to look at, had many hands-on activities, and offered a positive look at how writing helps the community. Front desk staff is awesome!

Lots of interactive pieces in this museum, which keep things engaging. As a copywriter by trade, I really appreciate the representation of different forms of writing here. There’s also a diverse array of representation for writers across gender and cultural backgrounds here which is great to see. The Ray Bradbury section was a lot of fun.

Wonderful small museum for families with children, as well as teenagers on field trips and solo adult travelers. They manage to fit a ton into this little space, and have an honest to goodness library of vintage books (A first edition of one of my favorites, To Kill A Mockingbird? Not bad!) The museum touches on well known authors and books, but will also introduce you to quite a few you've never heard of who made a major impact on the literary world. Lots of diversity in terms of who and what they touch on, and interactive features throughout can help engage kids in learning.

This small museum is a delight. The summaries of American writers and historical happenings is fantastic and the encouragement to tap our own creativity is well done. While I was there the feature exhibit focused in American writer who had immigrated (or their parents had) and was incredibly well done. If you love the written word, creativity, interactive museums, typewriters, books, authors, museums, or fun don’t miss the American Writers Museum.

Wow! This place is an English major's dream, with information and interesting little excerpts from all the famous writers. They are organized in a timeline in a very appealing and well-done timeline so anyone interested in history will love it too. Save time for the fun, interactive exhibits at the end, which could appeal to people of all ages!
