Housed in this plaza is the elegant Instituto Nacional de Cultura (National Institute of Culture), which was among the sites used for “Quantum of Solace,” a 2008 James Bond film that supposedly took place in Bolivia and Haiti but was filmed in Panama. Formerly the Supreme Court building, the Instituto now houses a small theater and hosts cultural events.

French square is a beautiful place to sit, relax and people watch. It is in the "Old City" part of town. There is many things to do and see here that cost no money. The Cathedral is near by along with many museums. The President was in town that night, so traffic was a little more congested and security was higher than normal. Even with all the extra security, walking around was not a problem or any restrictions.

The square and surrounding streets/path are 100% worth the visit. Nice views over the city skyline, Cinta Costera, the borders of Casco Viejo and more. The path that leads to the square has many stalls with nice artisanal souvenirs which adds colours to the experience. I reccomend arriving early in the morning and perhaps watch the sunrise from the location - very nice. Finally, if you are lucky, you might catch some folkloristic panamanian dancers but I am not aware if these events are advertised. Highly recomend a visit - nice easy walk.

Enjoyed walking the Square at sunset. Views were great and the monument to the Frenchmen was impressive. I particularly like the monolith of the rooster. Great stop when walling around Casco Viejo.

This spot at the end of ‘Casco Viejo’ is a beautiful place in itself. It’s architecture is wonderful, even though the monument could use some maintenance and a lick of paint. What I personally enjoyed most, are the views over the sea and the city. Because of the cloudy weather, the whole environment got something dramatic. I was surprised that there were so very few people over there. A couple of seemingly lost tourists and some vendors were the only living souls around. Check it out when you’re on Casco Viejo!

Walking around this gorgeous town Square, there were so many hidden nuances. I loved the old architecture of course, but these little artistic figurines are something that caught my eye. All the local vendors have so much to offer. I highly recommend the walk as you go through Casco Viejo.

This little square is full of history and commemorate the French architects and the 22,000 workers who died (their names are inscribed in stone tablets around the walls) in the unsuccesfull French attempt at creating the Panama Canal. The memorial was created in 1920-192 and it centres around an 18-meter tall obelisk topped with a Gallic rooster.

Whe the Colonial City was built, this area was one of the defensive points, to protect it from possible future pirate attacks!!!!

Considering what a let down the city of Panama is I was pleasantly surprised to find the old town looks and smells much newer than the modern part of the city. No stinking sewers or piles of trash just a pleasant historical part of the city that is being well looked after. Plenty of nice spots for lunch and dinner, a billion percent quieter than Panama city and nobody tried to sell me an avacado or some raw corn on the cob.
