To
visit
any
lighthouse
in
Cyprus
is
already
a
nice
experience,
because
a
small
island
in
the
big
sea
is
a
great
threat
to
seafarers.
This
statement
is
not
unreasonable
in
view
of
the
huge
number
of
shipwrecks
on
its
shores.
One
of
the
most
photogenic
lighthouses
on
the
island
is
located
in
the
town
of
Paphos.
Now
the
lighthouse
systems
are
automated,
and
it
is
turned
into
a
museum.
The
lighthouse
is
located
on
a
hill
above
the
embankment,
on
the
territory
of
the
archaeological
park.
That
is,
a
visit
to
the
lighthouse
for
the
traveler
is
also
diversified
by
a
visit
to
the
excavations
of
the
ancient
city
with
an
amphitheater,
the
foundations
of
ancient
buildings
and
marble
columns
scattered
throughout.
The
20-meter
lighthouse
was
built
by
the
British
in
1888
as
a
guide
for
ships
entering
the
port
of
Paphos.
Due
to
its
height
and
elevation,
on
which
it
stands,
the
beacon
gives
a
light
signal
for
17
nautical
miles
(31
km).
However,
the
presence
of
such
a
powerful
light
source
is
not
a
panacea
for
ships
caught
in
a
storm.
The
difficult
rocky
coast
of
this
region
and
the
elements
lead
to
fatal
consequences.
The
cargo
ship
MV
Demetrios
II
stands
in
front
of
the
lighthouse
in
the
sea,
stranded
here
since
1998
due
to
poor
navigation
in
severe
weather
conditions.
And
also
close
to
Paphos
is
another
more
picturesque
shipwreck
