Stunning views from the cliffside above. Beautiful beach with warm water. This was my favorite in Kerala. Great shops and restaurants on the path, high above, overlooking the beach. A bit touristy, lots of yoga students and practitioners. Good vibes but also lots of heavy selling to tourists. Great place to pick up any forgotten yoga gear or some spiritual beach reading. There is garbage on the cliffside but this is common in India, where waste management is lacking. Therefore, that thing brushing up against your leg in the ocean is probably a piece of plastic or refuse from a bag of chips, rather than a fish. The water and tides can be quite rough, at times, so it is best to stay near the shore.

Superb beach near a cliff. Get down the cliff to enjoy the beach. Various water sports activities are available. Sometimes dolphins can be cited in the morning. The cliff area is vibrant during the evening and especially at night. Various shops are on the sides of the walkway. A lot of cafes are en route for trying out enjoying various recipes.

Such an amazing beach. It’s one of the cleanest beach we have been to. You can get down from north cliff to this beach using stairs. The sunset from here is superb. This beach was quite lit all through the night. People were sitting on the beach even in late night. There are many cafes and restaurants in the north cliff. One of the best beaches in kerala.

This beach is definitely a another level. The view is just beyond awesome. Cliff makes this place a ultimate one. Less crowded mostly foreigners. Clear beach 🏖 good for sun tan time. Plenty of shops and parking space.

Wow just how cool the beach is. The cliff top is an amazing feature of this beach. The weather and water was absolutely awesome. Go there and relax on the white sandy beach. It’s just so hippy yet clean. You will love every minute spent here. There are plenty of restaurants and resorts lining the beach 🏖. The beach is easily accessible via NH66 and other arterial roads. It’s better than Anjuna beach of Goa. There’s even a helipad for 2 helicopters 🚁 in case of emergencies.

Nice beach.. However there were a lot of trees and grass overgrown in the surrounding especially in the sides to the steps to cliff from the beach which affects the beauty and safety of the beach..Floating bridges and other water activities are the newest attractions..

It is an awesome beach. Though the waves are very strong here and most probably you are not allowed to take a bath here especially during the monsoon. The Arabian Sea here is very rough. But the beach is big and green. You have to get down to the beach. Many steps are available from the cliff and also some resorts have the direct steps connected to the beach. From morning till evening you can enjoy a lot here. Rescue people are always on duty here. Better carry an umbrella and water bottle. Don't make the beach dirty. It's so clean and peaceful. From the cliff it looks different in the night and in the daylight.

Beautiful clean beach with a pristine view of the Arabian ocean. The beach is accessible from the cliff side as well as the town side. There are a lot of beautiful cafes lining the beach. Must watch the sunset here, its mind blowing. The beach and sound of the waves are so refreshing. In addition the beach view from the Cliff was awesome.

Varkala beach is usually crowded. So many activities like surfing can be done here with help of some assistance. Best place to rest and take sunbath, play in beach, watch the sunset. Apart from salt water normal usable water also flow somewhere in the rocks in beach. The place was neat and tidy. No unusual activities. Can bring family and have fun .

It is really beautiful. There are lots of seafood restaurants which offers beach views and also there are many crafts shop near to the cliff. The beach has clear water and is very neat.Although the place is crowded most of the times,it is really a best place to take rest, sunbath, play in beach and watch the sunset. Lifeguards are available during the day time. Waste management have to be improved and the steps towards the beach from the cliff could also be improved.

Varkala beach is located right at the centre of north and south cliff where you will get the best view of both cliffs In the morning time because of temple rituals this place is very crowded but later in the evening this is the best place to enjoy sunset then heading towards north cliff for night market

This is one of the wonderful beach in the south. Every location is fantastic like wall scenery. Risk is less, so that you can enjoy here a lot. There are some beach activities conducted here. In the weekend it is crowded and some times vehicles are prohibited in the cliff side parking. The cliff give an attractive look and ambience to the beach with full of shops. Lot of Foreigners came here.

It is a nice experience to visit here and can enter the floating bridge. The beach is so beautiful and a lot of tourists are wandering on the shores. There are some water sports activities available on the beach and i choose to spend time in the floating bridge which was recently built. At first it seemed a little scary but after experiencing 2 waves the fear is gone and there are a lot of fun. I spend 2-3 hours in the floating bridge which gives an awesome experience. The charges to enter the bridge is 250/- and there is no time limit in spending time in it. It opens at 8 am and closes at 6 pm. Heart patients and small kids are not allowed in it.

One of the best beaches in Kerala. So blessed naturally; but not taken care of properly. The walkways/steps to the beach from cliff are not cleaned or broomed and hence there is a chance of slipping off. Lot of things to be done from the Tourism Department to make it a much better place.

Beautiful beach with high waves. But all the shops are located on the cliff which is like odd 30-40 steeps stairs which are full of sands and plastic packets. Its better to take all thing you need from cliff and thn go to beach. View from cliff is very awesome.

Varkala Beach, also known as Papanasham Beach, and Pearl of Arabian Sea is a cliff beach situated in the coastal city of Varkala in Thiruvananthapuram District, India. It is situated 39 km north of Trivandrum the capital and largest city of Kerala. The beach skirts the Arabian Sea, part of the Indian Ocean. Other beaches in the town include Varkala Black Beach, Odayam Beach, Kappil Beach, and Aliyirakkam Cliff Beach. The word "papanasham" means to wash away sins. The nearest airport to the beach is Trivandrum International Airport which is situated 40km away from Varkala Town Varkala beach is the only place in southern Kerala where cliffs are found adjacent to the Arabian Sea. These cliffs are of tertiary sedimentary formation, and named by geologists as Varkala Formation. They are a geological monument as recorded by the Geological Survey of India. Water spouts and spas occur on the sides of these cliffs. The Janardana Swami Temple is situated near the Beach. It is known for a 10-day festival held twice a year, called Arattu. Sivagiri Mutt is another attraction, located atop the Sivagiri hill. Train service is available at Varkala Sivagiri Railway Station. Varkala beach has adventure and leisure activities such as boat riding, parasailing, jetting, and horse-riding. There are also restaurants and cafes; alcohol is not served.

Probably the best beach in India after Radhanagar. Had too much fun. Interestingly there are more foreigners than local Indians on the beach. 100% must visit. Beach Umbrella and resting chairs at available for 200 a day. Bring your own food. Can easily sit here all night. 10/10 would recommend and probably come again

The view from the cliff is too good with the breeze and it's a nice place to watch the sunset. The beach itself is clean and beautiful. A must visit for beach lovers and you can take a dip as the waves didn't seem agressive and the waters were shallow. Some adventure activities like para gliding was seen when we visited. There are a lot of seafood speciality restaurants just beware of their pricing. There's a walkway at the top of the cliff with sea view.

Varkala Beach, located in the enchanting state of Kerala, is a breathtaking destination that truly captures the essence of coastal beauty. I recently had the pleasure of visiting this stunning beach, and it left an indelible mark on my heart. With its pristine shores, stunning cliffs, and serene atmosphere, Varkala Beach is truly a slice of paradise. One of the standout features of Varkala Beach is its unique geological formation. The beach is nestled at the base of towering cliffs, creating a dramatic backdrop against the azure waters of the Arabian Sea. The cliffs offer mesmerizing views, and it's an incredible experience to watch the waves crash against the rocky formations. Walking along the cliffside pathway, you'll find numerous viewpoints where you can soak in the panoramic vistas, capturing some truly Instagram-worthy pictures. The beach itself is a long stretch of golden sand, perfect for leisurely strolls and sunbathing. The clean and well-maintained shores provide a tranquil setting to relax and unwind. The waters are relatively calm, making it safe for swimming and other water activities. If you're an adventure enthusiast, you can also try your hand at surfing or parasailing, which adds an extra thrill to your beach experience. Varkala Beach is not just about natural beauty; it also boasts a vibrant and lively atmosphere. The beach is lined with numerous shops, restaurants, and cafes, offering a delightful mix of local and international cuisines. You can savor delicious seafood dishes, sip on fresh coconut water, or indulge in traditional Kerala snacks. The bustling flea market near the beach is a treasure trove of colorful handicrafts, clothes, and souvenirs, allowing you to take a piece of Varkala's charm back home. The beach is also renowned for its spiritual significance. At one end of the cliff, you'll find the Janardhana Swamy Temple, an ancient Hindu temple that attracts devotees from all over the country. The temple's peaceful ambiance and intricate architecture make it a must-visit spot for those interested in cultural exploration. In terms of accommodation, Varkala offers a wide range of options to suit every budget. From luxurious resorts with stunning sea views to cozy guesthouses nestled amidst nature, there's something for everyone. Staying close to the beach allows you to wake up to the soothing sound of waves and witness breathtaking sunsets right from your doorstep. Varkala Beach is a haven of natural beauty, tranquility, and cultural richness. Whether you're seeking relaxation, adventure, or spiritual enlightenment, this gem of Kerala has it all. With its scenic vistas, inviting waters, and warm hospitality, Varkala Beach undoubtedly deserves its reputation as one of the finest beaches in India. A visit here is sure to leave you with cherished memories and a desire to return again and again

This was a refreshing experience. The cool breeze from the beach relieved me. One full day is at least required to enjoy the beach at its fullest. There are many homestays to stay nearby. There are paragliding, ATV ride, jet ski, banana ride, floating bridge and much more. There will be more rush during the weeknd. Time during the sunset is best to take photos.

One of the beautiful beaches in kerala. Pretty long beach, you can walk. Free open parking available for two wheelers and four wheelers. One of the sad thing I noticed was footpath was used for parking so no consideration for pedestrians. Actually after sunset there isn't any vibe like beaches in Goa, means no night life. No shacks and variety of restaurants in the beach. It's very calm. Most people come there for doing rituals like 'Bali tharpanam'. Kerala devaswam board has a 'Bali mandapam' over there. Approach road to the beach is very narrow.

There are only a few clean beaches in Kerala and varkala belongs to that category. Varkala Beach give send goan effect because of the large number of foreigners visiting there Mostly all the cafes provide alcohol drinks The Beach side view give us a good ambience Very neat and clean, eveng time is the peak time when the beach become crowded. You can reach the cliff and there are stairs so that you can walk down to the beach. Was a great experience. All the things in Varkala Beach are mostly expensive The nearest town that is varkala It’s not that big so we must buy everything at Varkala Beach at higher rate.

The first and foremost thing i need to say is, it is a neat place. Sanitors frequently cleans the place. This place is prone for foreign visitors. So the shops present near the beach is made according to their taste. But indian culture also haven't gone down. Many indian carving pieces and many jewelleries are placed for sales. This attracts the foreigners very much. Para gliding is also present in the beach which you may can enjoy if you go there.

Varkala Beach, also known as Papanasham Beach , Papanassam beach at Varkala is much quieter than beaches in Kovalam. ... Varkala has a longer, wider and much better beach and has less black sand than Kovalam.

The water and tides can be quite rough, at times, so it is best to stay near the shore

Varkala beach. The view from helipad/ cliff is very beautiful. Such a top distance view of beaches are seen rarely in kerala. You would surely enjoy the evenings here. There was not that much crowd at beach, and gave me a calm feel. Though kollam beach is nearby, the speciality of this place is the low tides which are safe while comparing with kollam beach. You can bath and dive with sea without any fear. Enjoy..👍👍

Beautiful view from the cliff side. Just 2-3 km from Varkala Shivagiri railway station. There are lots of sea food restaurants and cafes that make this place a best hangout one. There are lots of crafts and apparel shops that turn this place into a shopping destination also. There are lots of stay options but better book earlier otherwise you won't get it for a better price during the seasons.

One of the most unique features of Varkala Beach is its cliffside location and stunning views of the Arabian Sea. It's a beautiful and clean beach. It's a perfect place to relax and enjoy with family.

  • 5/5 mayank namdeo b. 5 months ago on Google
We visited this cliff beach on 21 Nov 2023. As already brought out it is a cliff beach with white sand. Beach is located at shores of Arabian sea in Varkala, Kollam. It becomes steep in step wise fashion and therefore Authorities have made some areas restricted with sign posting in form of poles and barricades. Life guard is also available who is very active and keeps alerting people venturing in dangerous waters. Local people are there who offer Umbrella shades and beds at price of ₹ 200 each. Some haggling may be required for further reducing the charges. Sunset from the beach is quite awesome. There are no change rooms/washrooms which we could find. We did not find any vendors on the beach itself, which further added to maintaining its cleanliness. It's a beach quite popular with foreigners and therefore cliff top is stuffed with restaurants, cafes, curio shops, massage parlours etc. One can find lots of Brahminy kites with plumage in copper red and white circling above and few stray dogs on beach.
