Pretty good museum! They have lockers for free (you just put in a €1 coin and get it back after) and the audio guide is included in the cheap €7 ticket. The ticket gives you access to about a dozen other museums throughout the city. The coolest part of this museum is going underground to see the original structures from the days that the Ancient Romans settled it in the first century BC. There is a lot of information you can read, but maybe 40% of the time the info is only in Catalan or Spanish. The rest of the time there is English as well. So definitely get the audio guide which has a bunch of languages.

Really enjoyed this museum. I went on Sunday afternoon and was pleased to find it is free on a Sunday after 3pm (I don't think it's especially expensive anyway but nice little surprise). You basically start the walkthrough by going down an elevator 15 metres or so and you're suddenly in Roman ruins that are ~2000 years old. It was very quiet when I went so easy to take my time reading every sign. Very interesting museum that gives you a deep understanding of the Roman history there and the transformations that happened afterwards.

This is a great museum! This is a museum that I will brag about having visited for the rest of my life. The cornerstone of the museum is the largest preserved Roman settlement anywhere in the world outside of Italy. A raised metal catwalk is suspended over the streets and foundations of numerous houses, businesses and religious buildings of the original Roman settlement of Barcelona. Quite a tall section of wall is also preserved. The written plaques throughout the museum do a fantastic job of explaining what you are seeing and the exhibits here guide you through the history of the original settlement as it survived after the fall of the Roman empire and even flourished with the huge wine facility, a fish factory, and a growing religious hub that gradually became Catholic. The admission is only 5 euros! I spent 2 hours here and had to leave because we planned on going to mass at the Barcelona basilica - we could have easily stayed longer. The staff were friendly. Public restrooms on site.

An absolute hidden wonder of Barcelona. The upper floors are cool with modern history of Barcelona as well as alot of items from every day life. Once you start down the floors and end up under the musuem you are brought back into ancient Roman rule with the the remnants of an ancient city. The way it integrates the raised floor/ walkway throughout the ruins without wrecking them is fantastic. The church is so reminiscent of an scottish churches during King James time. Seeing the currently restored great hall with the original paintings is a great addition. Having a security guard that new knew the history and obviously was passionate about it was fantastic. He went well above and beyond his job duties. He definetly made our tour go from ho hum to super. Highly recommended stop. One of the best museums for the money.

Currently there's free entry after 3pm on Sundays. You can try and get the free ticket online but if you have issues like I did you'll need to go to the ticket booth inside to be let through (let security know you want to speak to the person at the ticket booth as you're trying to get the ticket online). There's two floors of viewing which separate the upbeat and informative vibe of the modern section; and the ancient section with remains of many buildings, structures and walls from the old city as well as a section with artefacts on display (all lowly lit for preservation). I was told to start with the modern history section then move to the older "ruins" section but I would have preferred to do it the other way around. Nonetheless, a place to visit to see the history of Barcelona that's better if it's free.

We weren't originally going to visit this museum, but after being told by a guide that it was a "must-see", we made time in our schedule to take a look. The museum consists of an underground path through the roman ruins of Barcelona, and contains several columns and artifacts from that era. I was particularly impressed by how large the site is, as it extends under more than a few streets of the Gothic quarter; it also unnerved me that had it not been for the guide's suggestion, we would never have known that all this time we were walking over so many ruins. The plaques provide clear information about the site, and I did not feel the need for a guided visit. Also worth saying is that we arrived at a saturday evening and the museum was basically empty, so it seems that you don't need to buy tickets beforehand. I don't quite agree that it is a "must see" (there are more special places to visit in Barcelona), but if you like history and have some more time in the city, then I would strongly recommend taking a look.

Amazing museum where the top section has history of modern Barcelona and the underground has Roman ruins which the city and museum were built over. One of the most interesting exhibition types I’ve been to.

A lovely museum, which is free entry. A minimal cost to enter below into the old Roman structures. An incredible experience which showcases ancient Roman building ruins and informative plaques illustrating what the buildings were likely used for during the times. Videos played through the museum and ruins which allow for a visualization of how the borders and allegiances changed throughout the years. A great experience, set aside atleast 2-3 hours to check out the entire complex.

One of the best Museums I've ever visited! The admission was just 5 euros and I was easily busy for 3h with the great exhibition without ever getting bored. The history of the city is displayed very interestingly through the centuries. Best part however were the excavations beneath the museum where you can see the ruins of the roman remnants of the city on a huge area. Also it wasn't crowded or anything, there were hardly any people at all despite the city being flooded with tourist. Would come again and highly recommend!

This is the main site of a series of museum built at the sites of ancient ruins. €7 ticket allows entry to all branches of the museum. This is the main and largest site. Overall a very well laid out and designed museum with actual ruins underneath. Ticket includes an audio guide. You are able to see remains of a Roman era garum processing factory, wine production facilities and also an early church. One negative point is that many displays has no English description an the audio guide doesn't give that level of details. Still a 5 star attraction if you are interested in the historical aspect pf the city. The person at the entrance, Adria, was extremely helpful and welcoming. Hence 5 stars.

Had a lovely wander around with my mother. The old walls are incredible to see and the interior of the cathedral above is stunning. There is so much fascinating history and the staff were lovely. As two primarily English speakers everything was well accommodated for and the trip was leisurely. Definitely a recommendation to any visitors to the city.

I don't know how this isn't the busiest museum in Barcelona. The history they have preserved here is absolutely extraordinary! Being able to walk around the old Roman streets of Barcelona and seeing all of the incredible artifacts was an unreal experience. This should absolutely be on the itinerary for anyone visiting Barcelona.

A very interesting visit for anyone interested in the history of Barcelona or archeology. Buried under modern-day Barcelona is the original Roman city of Barcino. The remains date back to the 1st century BC. A series of elevated walkways allow you to walk around and over the ruins, learning about the history and function of the facilities. It seemed parts were closed for COVID, and we weren't always very clear of the recommended path to take through the museum.

We accidentally visited the Museum, we saw a big clock machine outside and thought, ohh looks interesting. Little did we know the museum person mentioned that they have free entry in the museum. We didn't expect it to be so big and have a large excavation area underneath. But, I must add it was totally worth visiting. If you are visiting Barcelona and interested to know about the city and its history this is the place for you. Also, thank you to all the staff they were very nice and helpful with the information.

Huge waste of potential. The archeological monuments are amazing but descriptions are poorly illuminated, small, low, and often missing the English translation. The place in general is illuminated quite badly. This place has the potential to become the Spanish little Pompei if they improve their exposition quality

Very interesting museum! There are two main parts: modern history and older history of the city (where the ruins are). One thing I really appreciate in the modern section are the descriptions - they all began with a question and then answer them right after. This is great for people to raise their curiosities of the city history and are also great for people who may want to know specific questions and answers - I wish more museums did it. Bonus is that the air conditioning is great. The ruins are actually Roman Barcelona (Barcino) and it's so fascinating to see a whole city underneath the Gothic Quarter that's really well preserved. It's also bigger than I thought and it was so much fun to walk around it and learn about the different parts of the old city. This place is now one of the highlights of my trip - very highly recommended and tickets are not too expensive either for what is provided!

We loved this place! I had no idea the background of the city, and this museum shows its rich rich history. You can see ruins from its founding as a Roman outpost, through the changes brought by the church, and beyond. They did a great job of making ruins accessible and teaching, while preserving. English translations were provided in many places, and there were English brochures available.

Do not go if you're not fluent in Catalan or castillan, more then half of the exhibit is not translated - yet you do not pay half price for having only half of the explanations. We were not informed of that when we bought tickets at the counter. Upon receiving leaflet in catalan/castillan we asked for an English version but it was not available... Due to covid (?!?) Not recommanded unless fluent.

July 2023 Utterly brilliant! This place is little advertised or marketed it really unfortunate. Seeing an underground Roman city should be on everyone's bucket list (and it's only EUR 7 per adult!). Gives a very good history of Barcelona and how it evolved from Roman's time. Tip - Good place to visit when it's a hot summer afternoon outside 😁

Interesting museum with archeological remains of the Roman and medieval Barcelona in the basement. The whole basement under the former king's palace is a huge archeological site with explanations of the life in different eras, showing various shops and trades of the time. The vine production with enormous clay pots for me was the most impressive. Above that is the medieval court with throne room and chapel all build in on one side into the original Roman city wall.

  • 4/5 Agnieszka W. 1 year ago on Google
Really interesting place for those interested in history. The path among old Roman remnants is well prepared with good descriptions also in English. It allows to really understand how the city looked like back then and how it was developing. It's a pity there is a gap between around 6th and 14th century or I was not able to locate the exhibition. Sometimes museum offers free entry, worthy checking.

This museum allows you to explore the archeological digs of the time period from 100 to 500 AD, which cover the Roman and Church periods of the Old city center of Barcelona. I loved going back 2000 years and being able to see, smell, and touch history. There are extensive ruins to explore. My favorite part was the baptistry of the church. It potentially shows how the early church practiced baptism by immersion.

(Translated by Google) The price-performance ratio is hard to beat. We paid a total of 5 € for 2 people (under 30), as this is a 2 for 1 action. On the upper floor, you first go through an exhibition with various objects from the history of Barcelona and learn, among other things, how the city has grown. Otherwise, this part mainly revolves around recent history. Then you go downstairs, where you get an audio guide (also in German). This is initially about the history of the Iberians. Then you get to the best part: Roman excavations are exhibited in an extensive area. We found the part super interesting and really special! The museum may be rather boring for children, but there are also special titles for children with the audio guide.
