This is a unique museum dedicated to the eclectic collections of Frederic Marès. The museum is home to a vast array of artifacts ranging from Romanesque sculptures to antique toys, offering a fascinating insight into the collector's passion. The museum is located in the heart of the Gothic Quarter and is housed in a beautiful building that once served as the Royal Palace.

An amazing collection. In all the years I have visited Barcelona I have never been here. Wish I had as it’s incredible the amount of things collected. You need to visit many times to see it all. We went on a Sunday afternoon and just didn’t have enough time. The beautiful religious sculptures are only the start. You don’t need to be religious to appreciate the skill involved. I am still amazed by what I saw. And then you go up to the collections. Everything you can think of. This has got to be the best collection in the world. So much history. So much art craft and design.

Amazing museum, where you can find different types of art works. Their staff is so friendly! If you are under 30 you will get a discount, also you can keep your ticket and use it within 6 months.

Interesting, especially the top two floors. The bottom floors are mostly filled with religious sculptures. The museum is free to visit on Sundays after 15:00 (the entire day on a first Sunday of the month) The problem is, however, that there are no labels. Sometimes it is not even clear what is the purpose of the object we were looking at. They need either much better labels and/or an audioguide.

A large museum spanning many floors with a vast selection of items renting from antiquity to basically the industrial age. There are guided as well audio tours available and I would recommend either of these as there is very little detail given for much in display, many with no plaques at all to even give a hint of what you are looking at our even the era from where it came.

Very nice museum! First Sunday of the month is free. I booked the tickets on the same day I visit and still available. It has three floors with loads of collections. Was fun to visit! One lady she is super lovely and reminds me to wear my backpack in the front.

An incredible collection! I am fascinated, overwhelmed! An amazing, rich place! I wandered around in amazement! Definitely not a place for a few hours or a day; can visit for days and weeks. I want to look carefully each track and consider, examine individually. For sure I will come to Barcelona again so that I can come to this museum once again. The staff are very hospitable, friendly and helpful. Thanks so much. I am very impressed.

The polychrome religious carvings of the Virgin Mary and the crucifixes of Jesus Christ, in different styles from the 12th to the 17th century, stand out. On the upper floor there are several collections of various objects such as fans, pipes, paintings, etc ... On the entrance patio there is a small fountain that is decorated with flowers for the feasts of Corpus Christi and can also be see the traditional "egg as it dances." In summer you will also find a small café with outdoor tables overlooking the cathedral towers. (Translated by Google) A place that had me in love. I repeated more than once but this was the last. We were touched by a museum employee who out of respect and education I will not qualify but it was a lousy deal and treated us as if we were going to commit the theft of the jojoya. We listened as he told the security guard what would control us and put us down on a donkey to which the aforementioned replied with a .... I have them controlled. The rest of the employees have a charm but this girl is a real embarrassment. (Original) Un lugar qué me tenía enamorada.

I was frankly a bit disappointed. If you like religious sculptures, this is for you since they have at least two floors of them (hundreds depicting Jesus alone). The upper floors with the old Barcelona photographs, toy / entertainment exhibition and the Marès library with his own sculptures were a lot more interesting.

It was a free entry day and this is why I came here and I loved it! Beautiful art to observe and the service was nice. And you definitely have to see the patio. It's wonderful for photo shoots and for walking breaks.

Beautiful and huge collection of items from middle ages to 20th century. If you want to see it fully it would take a few hours. On Sundays it’s is free if you prebook.

  • 5/5 Esther M. 2 years ago on Google
The museum offers a super interesting, and vast collection of curious artifacts. Religious sculptures, medieval artifacts, photography, games and dolls, newspapers, armory, and others. But the nicest thing about this museum was the workers, they are very knowledgeable, respectful, dedicated, and just nice in general. The whole visit was nicer because of them, it's worth visiting if you want to see a huge collection of relevant historical artifacts. I would recommend and I will visit again when I'm back in Barcelona.

Exciting collection of medieval Sculptures, ancient watches, belongings, dishes and many other things. 5 huge floors. Entrance about 5 euro.

  • 4/5 Marga B. 2 years ago on Google
Interesting experience to look at someone's actual collection. And, Frédéric was a quite a collector of everything. First two levels were filled with religious statues. Many, many similar religious statues. Then, you move on into collection of cigars, smoking pipes, clocks, watches, armour, guns and many various personal belongings such as hair combs, glasses, small photographs of many different women. The lisy goes on and on. Additionally, the place has a nice AC, friendly English speaking staff and you can come back anytime within 6 months again with the sane ticket. Not to mention the building itself if very beautiful.

Interesting. First level is collection of religious things, that i have skipped, because it was enough in other museums, but on the second and higher floors you can see lots of things. From swords to teatral decorations, from postcards to something really strange. Recommended to visit.

This is a wonderful museum of what I'm guessing was a hoarder. I love it. I've been there at least 3 times and will definitely return. Although, if Mares was alive I'd call a therapist based on his scissor collection alone. Let's not even talk about the women's hair pieces.

The floor that interested me the most was the one that had various collections (3rd floor). The staff were friendly, there was no souvenir shop inside, and bags should be kept inside the lockers. I want to extend special thanks to the receptionist who lent me 1 euro so I could use the locker for being accommodating. Also, a big thank you to sñra. Susana for answering my questions on the top floor. You can find more of my travel adventures on Instagram: fj_elegino

It is an overwhelming museum that I think is worth visiting, but be prepared for an overdose of all sorts of collectibles in the upper floors. The best part for me was the Romanesque to Renaissance art. Visit it if you are an artholic.

  • 4/5 Putri D. 6 months ago on Google
It’s located just right beside the Cathedral de Barcelona (near the ticketing/information). I think because it’s located there this makes Frederic Mares seems “passed by the tourists” since they’re focusing to get into the cathedral. Very nice museum with grand indoor patio with hi trees and beautiful inside garden. Inside is all you need to know about the Hispanic history from the perspective of Frederic Mares.

Anthropologically relevant and accurate. Impossible to see it all in one go if you don't keep the rythm up from the get go... I'd advice to start from the end and move your way down. It's a great museum.

It was free entry and we happened to come across this museum as we were strolling through the streets. Loved the little courtyard.. such a tranquil feel. The collections are beautifully kept and the collectors cabinet is just mind blowing on the top most floor! Never seen such an extensive collection of items. A must visit!

This other great unknown museum to both visitors and locals alike is found in front of the city’s principal Cathedral. The vast and eclectic collection of the sculpture Frederic Mares is housed in the Real Mayor palace in the Gothic Area, and includes an unequaled collection of Christ’s on the Cross. Another section of the museum, known as Sentimental Museum, contains a collection of daily use articles such as fans, clothing, etc

  • 4/5 Vitor M. 1 year ago on Google
Museum with a great concept of mixing old and new arts, like putting side by side a 14th century painting with a modern sculpture. Besides that, it's really focused on christian sacred art. If that's your thing, this museum is for you

  • 5/5 Jim D. 1 year ago on Google

An amazing museum with A LOT of things to look at. Definitely one of our best visits in barcelona. Be here on good time before they close, at least three hours. Because they have a huge collection.

  • 4/5 Rachel M. 4 years ago on Google
Amazing collection of beautiful objects including religious sculptures, fans, pottery, metalwork and textiles. The cool, quiet interior of the museum was a welcome and peaceful break from the busy streets outside. There are such a variety of items on display and the old display cabinets themselves are lovely, I found myself intrigued by items I didn't even think I would be interested in. I just wish there had been a bit more interpretation in the upper floors so I knew what some of the more obscure things were or when pieces dated from.

  • 4/5 Tim T. 2 years ago on Google
Amazing museum of art that covers 10 centuries. There are plenty of crucified messiahs and Virgins with sons but also weapons, fans, and risqué cigarette cards! Uncrowded, little known, and fascinating

Don't let the lower floors put you off if your not a fan of religious artefacts. Upstairs has one of the most random collections of stuff I have ever seen. Very cheap entry (4.20 euros) and only 1 euro for the audioguide. The place was practically empty and needs to be visited more. One slight drawback was I felt the staff were stalking me through the rooms at times. But I suppose they have to keep the objects safe.
