Amazing museum! It should be in the top of your list when visiting Lima and you should definitely hire a tour guide given that every bit of information is fascinating! Our tour guide Andrea was so knowledgeable and very friendly. We then went to the restaurant in the museum and the food was amazing! They were able to cater to me given my dietary restrictions (vegan). Melissa, our server was the highlight of the night! She was so nice and professional. She really made the experience that much better. In summary: - Don't leave Lima without getting a guided tour of the museum - The staff is fantastic - Would be a romantic thing to do with a partners - Cater to dietary restrictions, including veganism

The Larco Museum was great. It's not a big muse but it's very well curated with a lot of information to go through. It takes approx 3 hours for a detailed view of the museum (reading everything). There is also a special room with special pieces that's a bit separated from the main area that you should not miss but not sure if smaller children are supposed to go there. There is also a small cafe inside with good drinks but food is just ok.

I have two teenage boys who are much more into outdoor adventure than visiting museums. However, we felt like we should visit at least one museum during our trip to Peru and picked the Larco Museum. It was a great choice and we all really enjoyed it. The collection is very impressive and displayed in an easy to appreciate manner. Signs are provided in 6 languages including English for each display. In addition to the collections, the grounds themselves are quite nice. We spent about 2 hours there in total. We took Uber from our hotel both directions, which was very easy. There were a decent number of people there, but it was not crowded at all.

We went here with minimal expectations and plenty of ignorance about pre-Incan cultures. It was AMAZING! We had a fantastic visit with the help of a guide. We learned so much and came away with a good (novice) understanding of the pre-Incan people. Artifacts on display go back up to about 5,000 years ago. Highly, highly recommend. It's a bit out of the way but easy by taxi. Also, we didn't eat there but the restaurant attached to it is absolutely beautiful. We already had other plans but wish we could have eaten there.

This is one of the most complete museums of art work from the pre-Inca days of Peru. I went with a friend that had deep knowledge of this museum and the history of the finds for this collection. There is case after case after case of artifacts of all kinds, even some in built of gold. We spent two-hours here, and there was not enough time to explore all of it. The restaurant attached to the museum is awesome as well. Great food, and great selection of mixed drinks and wine. The museum and restaurant would make a great date night!

Must see museum, my favorite in Lima. The grounds are beautiful, located in an 18th century casona, with a gorgeous garden and wonderful bouganvillas all around. The main collection is comprised mainly of pottery and some metal work organized by different precolombian periods. It is well explained and offers a good introduction to precolombian history and cultures for the visitor. I would recommend 2 - 3 hours for this small but wonderfully curated museum. The erotic huacos are great fun as well.

A very comprehensive showcase of all the cultures that come before Spanish invasion. Not all of the descriptions has English translations but it should not be a problem for none Spanish speakers to understand most of the background. The most interesting of course is the erotic section of the wing. Fascinating stuff. 😉

Great to visit with a guide. The museum has over 45,000 pieces of art. In 1hr, we saw the highlights and had a nice tour with local guide Sandra. One member of our OAT tour group opted to stay and spend more time. I've included photos of beautiful restaurant/bar which is on museum grounds. The gardens surrounding this former home are spectacular and well maintained. LANTANA cascades over the walls. Worth a visit...it has English Descriptions too.

A very interesting museum. We spent about 2 hours here but could have spent more of our tour guide wasnt rushing us. Almost all items have descriptions in at least 4 languages, Spanish, English, French and German. A guide is not needed but it's helpful and faster than reading all the descriptions and figuring it out piece by piece. The restaurant had great food!

This museum is beautiful. Covers many pre-Colombian civilizations and the displays are translated well into English. It does not take a large amount of time to go through the gallery, but there is a lot to see and enjoy. There is an erotic section which is separated from the main gallery. They offer a student discount.

For every historical piece that makes into the permanent exhibition, there are hundreds similar items sitting on the shelf in the back room collecting dust. Human memory hard drive has very limited space. Most are buried, forgotten, or never discovered. Millenniums of history from thousands BC to Colonial times are shown in these rather crowded rooms, inspiring us to imagine life in the long gone past on this ancient land. Interesting to see human sacrifices depictions, and DON’T miss the EROTIC museum after you finish the main exhibition. The flowers in the courtyards are beautiful- must be very old plants. It’s a private museum and the size is very modest - but still very fun to see.

The collection was mainly based on pottery and jewelry of Incas. However, the explanation for each item was pretty detailed and it was in English (among another languages). So it was a pretty informative visit. We spent about 1.5 hours there. Many people suggested to visit the restaurant, however we decided to skip that option, as it seemed too expensive. The erotic exhibition was pretty interesting as well - a friend of mine got so impressed so he even bought a thematic t-shirt there 😊

Excellent museum, lovely surroundings. Informative, historically accurate in their narrative. Excellent time spend there. AND their restaurant is among the best in Lima, teach, lunch, dinner, whatever, its all good. A truly cultural experience. A must visit. Make sure you separate enough time to enjoy all it has to offer.

This was one of the best museums I’ve ever been to. The pieces themselves were beautiful and nicely displayed. A unique feature was the quality of the information provided. The 10 minute video was extremely well done and the written descriptions accompanying the displays were clear, succinct, interesting, and always cleverly connected what you were looking at to how we tend to see things today. The restaurant was also very good. The storage room of non displayed pieces (thousands of pieces), open to the public, was also wonderful and unique.

It is a very nice museum. Here you can admire a beautiful collection of ceramics that date back before the so called discovery by Columbus. Additionally, the museum is located inside a beautiful colonial mansion. The garden with all its plants is worthy in itself. Definitely, a good way to explota part of the rich history encountered on the Peruvian territory. They also have a restaurant. As always in this type of locations it is overpriced but never the less the atmosphere is beautiful. If you can afford it just do it.

Worth visiting. Impressive collection. Very informative. The main entrance is facing Parque Larco. A souvenir shop is located at the main gate. There is a steep climb that would lead you to the ticket counter and reception. There is a restaurant within the museum located at the other lower side of the museum. Consist of 3 galleries- the permanent exhibit with detailed pre columbian displays, the visible storage, and the erotic gallery. The erotic gallery is a bit separated from the two, and is located beside the restaurant below. The food at the restaurant was very good but a bit expensive. Has a beautiful garden and landscaping. You might heard some insect sound and birds chirping but is just recorded for the ambiance. One of the most impressive and memorable museum I visited.

If you could only visit one museum in Peru, let it be Larco Museum. This place is a top-notch museum from the entry to the exit. Worth the 30-soles entry fee. Don't forget to visit the erotic gallery downstairs. Also, there is a nice cafe overlooking a lovely garden, but the price is a bit too expensive.

(Translated by Google) Located in a wonderful colonial mansion and surrounded by beautiful gardens, the Larco museum is presented as a true oasis within the modernity of Lima. It has a large collection of unique pieces that perfectly describe the pre-Columbian Andean culture of Peru. Its pieces are perfectly well preserved and organized in independent spaces, in such a way that the route is quite easy, pleasant and educational. In itself, the experience of being in the place is magical, since each corner invites you to immerse yourself in history. A cultural unmissable being in Lima. Widely recommended. Ampliamente recomendable.

This museum is amazing. It has an extraordinary private collection of ceramics and the grounds are really beautiful. They offer a 10 minute video with an introduction and overview to Peru’s history. They alternate between English and Spanish versions of the video with subtitles in other languages. We took the guided tour and we were glad because we learned a lot. Their gift shop has really nice souvenirs so make sure you stop by.

For me, this is one the most impressive, informative museums in the world. So much to learn about not only Incas but the pre-Incan civilizations who were established a thousand plus years before the Spanish conquest. Allow time to appreciate all that is here and explained in multiple languages. The beautiful grounds are a welcomed respite in the center of the bustling Lima metro. Enjoy a meal or drink in the lovely Cafe. 😍 Chill. Don't forget the erotic gallery which gives some insight to life in pre-Columbian times. Enjoy!

Very educationally rich museum for those interested in the history and culture of Peru. Guided tours ( including ones in English) are promoted and available, but even exploring it yourself is easy as every display has explanations in English, French, German, Japanese. Museum is surrounded by lush tropical gardens with the museum cafe that serves amazing Peruvian food at moderate prices, the setting is beautiful, enjoy the food and cocktails there. Staff is very friendly and speak English. Highly recommend spanking few hours there

Especially if you are new to the history of Peru, you'll be able to spend some hours here. Interesting collection with descriptions in multiple languages. The descriptions are mostly generic about the periods, cultures and the type of things that are depicted, but not too much details on individual items. There's a large storage which you can also visit. Overall a good experience and friendly service.

Great experience! Definitely get a tour guide! If you're into history at all, you will be amazed with what you learn. The staff is friendly and willing to accommodate you in English and in Spanish. Plan on being there for at least an hour, maybe more. Take pictures to your heart's content, just don't wear a hat indoors. The restaurant looks great, we tried the bar 🍸, excellent. The crowd was well dressed, but we were dressed casually. It did not seem to bother anyone. It was a sunny day, so most takes were eating in the garden.

The collection of ceramics discovered by Largo family was amazing. I don't know much about Peruvian history but was able to learn some. This is a great destination. From the exhibits, to the information, to the excellent casual restaurant and grounds. No visit to look at the history of Peru is complete without it. Is a very inexpensive Uber ride from Lima. One small problem is that The museum apparently charges taxi and Uber drivers for parking out front. This means that Uber drivers will not pick you up at that location. You’ll have to walk a block or two away and pick up a ride then.

Travel to Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, Chile for 3 something months, the Larco museum is - The best explained in English of how and when the artifacts function I have ever visited. The only museum has 6 langues artefacts explanation. The most astonishing, sophisticated, rare, well preserved collection I saw out of all the museums. The clearest visiting flow and graphic from artefacts. The only museum that opens their archive room for all visitors. Has the most lively garden. I felt I learn a lot of the civilizations of pre Columbian by visiting this museum as well as the passion of Mr Larco, glad that I had the chance to visit this museum.

(Translated by Google) This museum has an important quantity of archaeological pieces, very well distributed and explained. Outside of that, it has outdoor spaces that are beautiful and its restaurant service is very good. Even so, you don't like museums, it is impossible for the Larco Museum to be indifferent to you. If you are interested in archeology then here you will find unique pieces. It has a fairly large collection of "Erotic Huacos" and the metal objects (gold and silver) are impressive. They also offer multilingual guides. Its rooms are clean and you have resting places where you can review books on archaeological subjects and pre-Hispanic art. The place is clean, it has all the services. The infographic is accessible and is also in different languages. You cannot enter with backpacks for security reasons, but the place is safe to leave your things. It has explanatory and introductory videos. You can do the tour on your own, it is easy, although the help of a guide is always good. The lighting, although it tends to be somewhat dark, helps the atmosphere of this museum as it achieves a wonderful contrast with the archaeological pieces. It also has a warehouse area, where you can see thousands of pieces ordered by theme (mainly ceramic vessels). If one is in Lima, this museum is one of the best options. Your tour takes a couple of hours, but it's worth it.

The Larco Museum (officially known as Rafael Larco Herrera Archaeological Museum, in Spanish: Museo Arqueológico Rafael Larco Herrera) is a privately owned museum of pre-Columbian art, located in the Pueblo Libre District of Lima, Peru. The museum is housed in an 18th-century vice-royal building. It showcases chronological galleries that provide a thorough overview of 5,000 years of Peruvian pre-Columbian history. It is well known for its gallery of pre-Columbian erotic pottery. In 1925, Rafael Larco Herrera acquired a collection of vases and other archaeological pieces from his brother-in-law, Alfredo Hoyle. There were approximately 600 ceramic pieces in all. The arrival of these objects ignited a collector's enthusiasm in his son, Rafael Larco Hoyle. Soon after, Larco Herrera left his son in charge of the collection and those pieces completed the first collection of what would become the Rafael Larco Herrera Museum. During that same year, Larco Hoyle received some advice from his uncle, Victor Larco Herrera, a founder of the first museum in Lima. He urged Larco Hoyle to form a new museum in Lima, one that could guard all the archaeological relics that were continually being extracted by clandestine excavators. Larco Hoyle agreed with his uncle and proceeded to create a museum that would carry on his father's legacy. Larco Hoyle purchased two large collections: 8,000 pieces from Roa and 6,000 pieces from Carranza. He also purchased several small collections in Chicama Valley, Trujillo, Virú, and Chimbote. Within a year, the collection had grown significantly and display cases were installed in a small house on the Chiclín estate. On July 28, 1926, Independence Day, the museum opened to the public as Museo Arqueológico Rafael Larco Herrera. The Larco Museum now lends some of its collection to its daughter museum, the Museo de Arte Precolombino (Pre-Columbian Art Museum), located in Cusco, Peru.

Amazing museum in a beautiful building with an amazing restaurant. You can find some incan and pre incan artifacts here that are carefully curated. The museum is not big but I felt like i saw more than enough. There's an entire room filled to the brim with incredible pottery. There's also an entire building dedicated to erotic art. It's probably the biggest collection of erotic art that I've ever seen. If you're in Lima and you want to visit a museum, this is a must visit.

A wonderful trek though a breathtaking collection of more than 45,000 pieces of South American history spanning millennia and civilizations. Everything from ceramics to textiles to weapons to funerary bundles containing real mummies to ceremonial assignments: there's really too much to cover in one day. Pro tip: try to set up a guide to walk you through the museum and fill in the gaps and make your trip doable in an hour or two. For a guide try Lima Tours (they offer tours in English and Spanish and transportation to and from your hotel)!

Fantastic museum! I could spend hours in here. There is so much to learn about Pre-Columbian cultures in Peru and this is a great place to get started. I would recommend a guided tour if you can get it, if not there is so a lot of information provided to you about every section and artefact that it will be worth it either way.

A great collection of precolombina art. Just the building itself, a colonial mansion, is worth the visit, this is a beautiful oasis in the city. Do not miss the erotic gallery in the bottom. There is a gorgeous restaurant in the museum, we heard the food was very good.

  • 5/5 Michael C. 1 year ago on Google
Quite the intriguing array of display pieces. Some might say eclectic but it really does an excellent job of telling the story of the indigenous peoples as well as their adaptations throughout the times. It was fun to go through and learn a bit about the reverence to shiny metals, and rather complex components of their culture. Guided tours were available but I did not participate in one. Furthermore there was more risqué content in the first floor which was also quite interesting to view. The gift shop was furthermore reasonably priced!

  • 5/5 Jerry R. 1 year ago on Google
What an interesting historical museum. The artifacts are exceptional well preserved with multiple languages of explanations. To go through the entire museum can take up to 2 hours if you read each and every fact. There is even a short video presentation that you can watch. Even the gift shop was a highlight as you can take home a replica of such amazing art and jewelry.

Outstanding museum, highly recommended. See scheduled guided walks...highly recommend the guides; knowledge and courtesy. Orfalina was my guide...she was AWESOME. There is a restaurant inside ...pricey and needs a reservation, it was full when I was there. There are options nearby..a block or so. Visit erotic gallery....nice but expensive gift shop. Excellent service...they pack delicate gifts in bubble wrap.

An oasis in the middle of the city of Lima. What a wonderful place, very well structured museum which you can see in about 2 hours (we did stop to read in each station). It is excellent to bring families, and for children to experience first hand such a rich and wonderful history of this country. We did not have a reservation for the restaurant, which we highly recommend you do, but they managed to sit us down and enjoy a wonderful and very refreshing lunch. Your visit to Lima will be complete, once you visit this museum.

The museum is a must visit when you stay in Lima. The collection of pre-Columbian artefacts consists of beautiful, well maintained pieces that show the craftsmanship of the civilisations that roamed Peru, well before documented time. The museum itself also has a wonderful flower garden

  • 5/5 Caio G. 4 months ago on Google
It is considered one of the main museums in Lima. There are 5 thousand years of development of Peruvian history portrayed through the most diverse types of archaeological objects. Its display in chronological order makes it easier to understand many aspects of pre-Inca and Inca cultures. For real, it's a very interesting museum!

This Museum comes highly recommended! They have a beautiful and vast collection of pre-columbian art and artifacts in one of Limas oldest Haciendas. I highly recommend doing a guided tour, as you learn even more in a very fun way (shout out to Fabio). The Garden is also very beautiful and invites you to enjoy it. And last but not least there is the restaurant, which has amazing food and staff. So go there if you get the chance!
