This is one the nicest museums I’ve ever visited, it is very big and has three floors. Was very excited to see the new exhibits and the old ones. They have a very lovely collection of Roman antiques and very prehistoric artifacts, was definitely worth the trip and would definitely recommend it to anyone in the area or stopping by to visit Madrid.

Well worth the 3 euros entrance fee. Nicely laid out but far too much reading. Listed in English and Spanish. I would highly recommend an hour or 2 there. Start at the top and work your way down.

MAN is easily my favourite museum in Madrid! I'm totally impressed by their extensive antique collections. Definitely worth spending an afternoon here while visiting the Salamanca district.

Wow this place is huge. Even with one of the floors under renovation it took around four hours to complete, maybe longer. No complaints though. It was fascinating. Mummies, Sarcophagus, some wonderful mosaic artwork, some as bit as an entire wall. This place did not disappoint. I plan to go back once the floor that was being renovated is done because the other 3 floors were crazy awesome!

The National Archaeological Museum, AKA Museo Arqueológico Nacional (MAN), is a great place to discover the history of Spain. The museum offers wings full of Egyptian, Greek, Roman, and Arab art and artifacts. It's a very popular museum, especially that it allows people in for free all summer long. Just remember to get your free ticket online before you go.

Great big museum in the heart of Madrid, perfect for anyone who seriously loves a bunch of pottery, like so much pottery you begin to never want to look at a pottery again. There are still some really interesting artefacts including mummies and Roman swords but it is very pottery heavy! Would recommend to anyone looking to escape the Madrid heat in the middle of the day, don’t bother with the Canary island exhibition though its a bit dull

The National Archeological Museum (Spanish: Museo Arqueológico Nacional) is a museum in Madrid, Spain. It is located on Calle De Sarrano beside the Plaza De Colón, sharing its building with the National Library of Spain. Laying of the first stone of the building destined for the National Archaeological Museum and the National Library in 1866 The museum was founded in 1867 by a Royal Decree of Isabella II as a depository for numismatic, archaeological, ethnographical and decorative art collections of the Spanish monarchs. The establishment of the museum was predated by a previous unmaterialised proposal by the Royal Acdmey of Historyin 1830 to create a museum of Antiquities. The museum was originally located in the Embajodaras district of Madrid. In 1895, it moved to a building designed specifically to house it, a neoclassical design by architect Francisco Jareño, built from 1866 to 1892. In 1968, renovation and extension works considerably increased its area. The museum closed for renovation in 2008 and reopened in April 2014.

I thought it was stunning. Excellent overview of the archaeology of Spain from the first humans to the middle ages. Plus the bonus of good Egyptian and Greek sections. Disappointed that some sections, particularly the Altamira cave reproduction are closed due to covid, but that's life. Very good information, in English and Spanish. Excellent little shop. And it's free till the end of September! I spent over two hours here, and that was with very cursory looks at the Greeks and Egyptians.

Free on Sundays which is a pleasant surprise compared to most museums around the world! Beautiful building with a mix of classic and very modern architecture in a great, central location. Also near lots of shopping in case you are into that sort of thing. I was a little underwhelmed with the exhibits however. I was expecting more of a focus on Spain / Iberia and Latin America. Not on par with similar museums in London, Chicago, New York, Paris, etc. So it would have been interesting for them to have really differentiated themselves in some fashion. I would highly recommend that Museum of the Americas instead. It's a little bit further away, however it is definitely worth visiting. All that said, it's still a cool little museum.

Perfect specially on the weekends because not much of the people. No doubt about all the pieces of Archaeological they corrected and 3D models. Useful English information, elegant layout and open. Recommend at least three hours decent covers for three floors.

Good museum but the coin section is not very interesting. Also: some important information is missing from a lot of items displayed (such as dates and origins). Otherwise, it is fairly pleasant to wander in the museum. A lot of things to see and you can leave your bags in a locker room before you visit so you feel unencumbered.

Underrated museum on the Madrid sightseeing list! Unfortunately when I went the top floor was closed, which house much of the Greek and Egyptian artifacts which are some of the best here, but the others floors were well worth the 3€ entry! The museum is set up to tell the history of man as you walk through each floor, which is both entertaining and educational. There are so many exhibits we even had to skip a few just to save some time, you could be here all day if you wanted. Even the building itself has some amazing architecture.

What an impressive museum. If you're into knowing some stuff about some things that happened at some time; look no further. Super in depth look at the prehistoric period was my personal favourite but all the exhibitions were fantastic, and had an English option which was incredibly helpful for me. Best archaeological museum in madrid I've ever been to.

REALLY GOOD! For €4 entry, this was one of the better museums in Madrid. Lots of interesting exhibits, statues, ancient artefacts and mosaics ... very interesting if you like that sort of thing. If you have spare time, I recommend visiting this museum.

Amazing museum, very well explained with texts in Spanish and English. It shows the wealth of cultures that have occupied the region that is now Spain throughout the centuries. It is free on Sundays, but closes at 3pm. Worth visiting on several days for the more thorough visitor.

Rude staff, enforcing pointless rules, including wearing your rucksack on the front when ABSOLUTELY EVERY exhibit is behind glass. I suppose you could accidentally bump into some monumental stone and graze yourself. Exhibits are mostly interesting but there's a lot of replicas. Staff to visitor ratio = 3:1 - so DON'T break the rules, they'll 'ave you.

What an excellent museum and a hidden gem in plain sight. For 3€ you can spend an entire day wondering through the history of Spain. With Spain's rich cultural history the volume of material can be overwhelming so you are best to pick an era or two and give them your full attention versus trying to cram the entire 4 million years of history into one day. Outside the museum there is a reproduction of the cave paintings at Altamira.

I enjoyed this museum very much with my 8 and 10 year old boys who love ancient history. We went twice spending just about two-three hours each time. Adults are 3 euros and kids under 18 are free. There is quite a bit in English which made it easier for us to understand. There are also phones apps that can tour you through the museum. I particularly liked the fact that there are quite a few people keeping an eye on the displays, but they don’t make you feel like you are constantly on surveillance. We visited two other museums in the same area that made us uncomfortable because they were practically breathing down your neck. My boys are young but they understand the rules of museums.

Who loves museums?! Well, you’re gonna adore this one! This is truly a lovely museum. Enjoyed learning about the history of Madrid. Beautiful artifacts nicely displayed. Clean bathrooms. Good size lockers. You need a Euro coin (that you get back) for the lockers. I don’t recall if it is always free or if I went during the free time. A really nice way to escapee the cold, heat, rain or snow. :)

There were some interesting exhibits, but I agree with others that the staff is rude and that there are way too many pointless rules. Apparently one of them is that you are not allowed to stand still more than a few minutes or you will have to move. Even if (for example) you are standing in a quiet, out of the way corner with your baby in a stroller, trying to keep her chill and quiet for a few minutes so her dad can look around a bit. Why, you ask? Good question.

Free entrance of younger than 30, older than 65 and on the weekend I believe. It's pretty big, there's missing a bit of structure in the way you should go but it's pretty amazing.

It was super! Tickets were only 3EUR per person. Worth the visit. Very interesting collection from pre history to the more actual part of life. Also very clean and not crowded at all for a weekday. To see everything over 3 floors it does take some time. So save 2,5-3 hrs if you’re interested in history to have seen and read everything. -tip : would be nice to upfront put a notice that the temporary exhibition is closed at the entrance.

Very large and modern museum with many sections. I enjoyed their multimedia approach, they had videos, things to touch, and tons of graphics. The upper two floors were closed for us, but I had already spent 4hrs. I like museums and I could spend 2 days here.

One of the must-go museums in Madrid. The exhibition of the human prehistory in Spain is one of the most detailed and anthropologically nuanced exhibitions I have seen. Central themes in human prehistory are addressed not only from a social but also economical perspective, creating a critical reflection of a parallel development of the prevalent economical system and the social structures supporting it. They also offer an exhibition on Ancient Greece and Egypt, and here also are detail and conciseness of the text perfectly balanced. Overall one of the best text-narrated, informative exhibitions I have ever seen, and all this for only 3€.

Archaeological museums are my favorite type of museums and I learned SO much from this one. I went by myself around 2pm on a weekday and had most of the exhibits to myself. I could certainly take my time without feeling rushed! Compared to other popular museums around Madrid that are packed and hard to move through, this was a delightful surprise. AND significantly cheaper. I spent over 3 hours here. I was hooked on the displays and so engaged with the timelines and artifacts presented. The museum itself is organized and easy to follow. The 3rd level was closed when I visited but I knew this ahead of time when reading reviews. They did not disclose this when I purchased my ticket though so this could be a disappointment to some. Easy to find, kind staff, excellent museum.

A beautiful museum full of objects of every age from across the world. 3 euro entry Lockers for backpacks are needed. 1 euro Kid friendly. Great access for all. Lifts and toilets are all accessible. You will need many hours to see all the Exhibitions across all floors. No rush to look around, it gets busy. It is however very large so plenty of space for all. Access via underground or buses. It all depends on where you are based. Just a short walk from all.

Tickets are 3 Euros per person, the exhibition had a free feature called Syria in Sepia. Worth the price of admission as you get to see the archaeological history of Spain, Madrid, Toledo and surrounding cities. Many cool artifacts spanning 4 floors from prehistory to more modern items. There are options to have an app which gives you more details about the items on display. A few of the artifacts are available to even touch which is rare. Highly recommended place to visit for a low cost especially if you enjoy archaeological items uncovered throughout history

I've done museums in my life, and good ones at that, but this one is clearly in the top. It's got a good amount of art, and most importantly in today's day and age : it makes an effort to be appealing to all. It's got videos, pieces you can touch, a free audio guide on you phone. It's a place you can enjoy alone, or with children, or with grandparents, or with a date. The building itself is great too, which doesn't spoil anything

An impressive museum, pretty big and a easy way to visit it through the rooms, the map is also really useful. Took photos of almost all of the highlighted art pieces. I went on a Tuesday so it was totally empty and had total calm to enjoy it. Probably 3 hours if you enjoy it deeply. Tons of history about Spain in all the years before the civil war and also some information about the Nile river, egipcios and the greeks.

This museum is .... AMAZING! It has such an a wonderful and vast collection of Greek, Roman and Egyptian artefacts (plus others) structured in a way which gives a nice flow to the exhibition over several levels. In the middle of the holiday season, I arrived at opening time and was the only one at the museum for about half an hour. You need at least 3 hours to see the entire collection without going into huge detail. Friendly staff and nice to see a lot of exhibits so close and replicas for hands on experience to be able to better empathise

A world-class archaeological museum. I most enjoyed studying the Greek and Roman eras of the Iberian peninsula. This was a period I knew nothing about and, sadly, it was the Hollywood film Gladiator, whose protagonist was from Iberia that I recalled as I studied these artifacts. A beautiful building as well, whose two guardians have stuck in my memory ever sense.

Archeological museum Great collection well presented. Unlike many museums in Spain bilingual notes with each exhibit. I’ve been twice now, and because of the wonderful display and my interest to understand more Spanish history I’ll be going again. Though generally it’s a poor customer experience: 1. almost no chairs to sit on; 2. Nowhere to buy a drink; 3. the ex cafe has been taken over by staff as a rest area - staff present not permitting anyone to use the mostly empty tables and chairs. 4. Confusing direction to visit - don’t follow the arrows, follow the staffs directions. As an older person who has injuries to both my back and my legs at this time I could only stay and hour. If better facillities, especially chairs, were provided I’d have most likely stayed a few hours.

I really loved their collection, especially the Iberian section. It is quite large, so be ready to spend some time looking at the exhibits. It's nice to have an English translation to go with the Spanish explanation :) I'll definitely be back.

It has more collections than what I have thought. Nice building, interior, exhibition layouts throughout. Easy to navigate as you travel the time through the presentations of the collections. Not every museum has a good story telling. This one does. And if you want to see mummies, don't bother to go to Louvre, this museum will feed you on that.

The Museo Arqueologico Museum ( Or MAN) is a Phenomenal Museum! Today was our last day in Madrid, so we had to decide which activity we wanted to do the most. The museum currently has an exhibition on Romania 🇷🇴 , and my husband is Romanian, so we chose to go. I am so thrilled 🤗 about this decision, because this museum is incredible. Admission was FREE, and we spent 4 hours there. Photography is allowed. There is a gift store that is open, but the cafe is currently closed. The exhibits are so well done, with a lot of interactive short films. There are three floors in addition to the basement. The museum provides a fascinating history of Pre-historic Time Period, Late Antiquity, The Nile- Egypt and Nubia, Roman Hispania and much more! The temporary exhibit of Romanian Treasures runs through February, 2022 and covers the history of Romania for more than 1000 years.

A great museum to learn about prehistory! There are Romans and Egyptians too but I didn't manage to see those in just 1 hour and a half. I'll definitely go back again to finish it!

Very nice museum, free on Saturdays after 14:00. A bit less than half of the museum was closed "due to covid" so if you want to see a specific collection make sure to check on their website first to see if it is open or not. Cloakrooms are temporarily closed and inside the museum the temperature is a bit hot.

Absolutely beautiful. Worth the visit. It's free until January 2022. Only downside is there are A LOT of replicas.

  • 5/5 Dumitru U. 2 years ago on Google
Great exhibits, the temporary one with Dacians and Romans is really impressive, and so are the neolithic and iron age ones. You need several hours for a decent visit. The top floor exhibit was closed, unfortunately (I think it was the Egyptian exhibit)

  • 5/5 Alan S. 2 years ago on Google
Very impressed with exhibits, almost all with English notes. Well organised from pre history onwards, very informative. Unfortunately 1 floor was closed when I went in mid Feb. After visit may want to take short straight walk to park del retiro, large with cafe by entrance and nearby metro station

Remarkable museum, free on weekend. Better start this place from top floor because more exciting items are up there.

  • 5/5 Irwin M. 1 year ago on Google
The museum highlights the archeological findings of Spain. They have impressive archeological finds, ranging from Spain’s pre-Roman Iberian heritage to Roman era statues and mosaics to Spain’s Islamic heritage. It covers all of Spain’s major historical eras. The Lady of Baz from its Iberian past to large Roman statues all the way to its former Islamic past shows how extensive and diverse Spain’s history is.

MAN archeological museum is an inexpensive (€3) hidden gem for those interested in cultural history of Egypt, Greece, Rome, and Spain. The exhibits are well laid out with Spanish and English translations and spaces for contemplation. It has air conditioning and Wi-Fi. Café was closed after Covid-19 and coin exhibit was closed as of July 2022.

For me, one of the best museums in Madrid. Beautifully done and laid out. Stunning exhibits. Friendly staff. Good for wheelchairs. Lots of toilets and a nice shop..

  • 5/5 Janey C. 1 year ago on Google
Amazing treasures, especially enjoyed all of the gold jewellery from the various ages of Spain. Only half of the top floor was open when we visited (Egypt and Greece), plus the floor below, floor E, where the coins are, was completely closed. To get to area of the top floor that is open, ask a member of staff as only some of the lifts will take you there.

  • 5/5 Tommey L. 1 year ago on Google
Very impressive museum. Full of artifacts that detail the history of Spain to the present — a lot ancient weapons to coin currency used back in the day. There are at least three floors of exhibits for you to view that are accessible via stairs or elevators. You need to place your large bags/backpacks in lockers before you enter exhibit hall. Worth the value and time to visit the MAN.

A must in Madrid if you are interested in the past of Spain and the making of Spanish identity. The hall of the modern period was closed when I visited. I focused on the Roman and Medieval periods. The bronze plaques with the inscriptions of lex data are of first and foremost importance for understanding the provincial cities of the Roman Empire, not to mention many beautiful mosaics. It’s a pity that the museum shop has not done a good job to cover such a rich, important and beautiful collection.

  • 5/5 James B. 11 months ago on Google
An amazing archeological exhibit. For best experience start at the very beginning, where you will get a breakdown of what to expect, which includes: origin of species, the prehistoric landscape, climate and human development, farming, animal domestication, ancient medicine, commerce, ritual, the formation of societies, Roman and Muslim influences, and so much more. It also boasts one of the largest ancient pottery exhibits you can find. The entrance is in the back of the Biblioteca Nacional building. You may want to call ahead to see which exhibits are open. Didn’t cost much to enter (3 Euros when I went). It’s a bright beautiful place. Bathrooms are on the second floor, and there are elevators.

  • 4/5 Kristi F. 11 months ago on Google
Ok place to visit. Lots of things to look at, lots of early history. The cave replica and the top 2 floors were closed so we missed a TON of the museum. Love all the detail in the mosaic pieces. Some are huge!

  • 5/5 Rushad 10 months ago on Google
Very interesting museum with lots of cool artifacts. Also the information cards are both in English and Spanish so that was very helpful. The Egypt exhibit was very cool.

Great museum for a cultural experience in Madrid. I rely recommend a private visit for unwavering all of the preistoric world.

  • 5/5 alex b. 8 months ago on Google
Maybe my favorite "history" museum in the world? Covers biological anthropology (primate ancestors of humans), pre-history, ancient history, and the populations who have come through Spain - Neanderthal, neolithic, paleolithic, Iberian, Celtic, Phoenician, Roman, Visigoth, Muslim, Christian/Catholic... even an Egyptian floor! Artifacts and reproductions are in perfect shape. The displays are top notch. A ton of bilingual reading material to help you understand the context of the artifacts. The country and government are very committed to understanding and preserving the past and nowhere is it more apparent than this museum! One of the most interesting places we visited in Madrid - we came back for a second day and still did not see nearly half!

  • 4/5 Justa G. 7 months ago on Google
Some very nice pieces and explanations. 2nd floor was closed due to extreme heat, so not sure what is up there. Entrance is behind the National Library and only 3 euros. For that price it's hard to complain. Not the best museum in the world, but good value for the price and worth a visit if in the area.

  • 5/5 Krzys P. 7 months ago on Google
5 floors starting in prehistory right up to modern times explaining different cultures and displaying amazingly preserved artifacts from the Iberian peninsula. The building itself is a beautiful artifact worth seeing and the price for admission was negligible. You'll be hard pressed to find a more interesting 4 or 5 hours for similar costs.

  • 5/5 Łukasz K. 6 months ago on Google
Absolutely, totally YES to go there! Very cheap entry, very helpful and nice, interested staff at the ticket caja. Spent here 2+ hours even though I am not a total archaeology enthusiast. The building itself is noteworthy and pretty. It has, literally, oceans of items of many kinds. Some are truly unexpected and astonished. You can also get a leaflet with about 10 most-suggested artifacts to see. There are also interactive areas, and nice maps and cinema-like elements. The tiny park by the building offers a great rest and picnic place.

  • 5/5 Diego Rodriguez A. 5 months ago on Google
Along with El Prado, maybe the best museum in Spain! Very interesting and big and only 3 euros! I'd recommend at least 3 hours to visit it without rushing through.

  • 5/5 Radovan U. 4 months ago on Google
3 € and you need 3 hours. I spent only 1 h. Great historical info about Spain, from prehistoric through iron age and new age. Statues from Roman ages. Great, worth of visit

  • 5/5 Marco C. 5 months ago on Google
Very interesting packed full of history. The building itself is an amazing space and the exhibitions are presented really well.. and it’s only €3 which is nothing. Well worth a visit !!

  • 4/5 Ellen Van R. 4 months ago on Google
A very clean, well set up museum. A visit is astonishingly cheap at only 3 euro per person when we where there on a Friday afternoon. It didn't look busy but possibly quite a few people were walking through the halls, without us really noticing. They lead you through a very rough chronological timeline with a few signature pieces clearly marked out on the one page map. Well worth a visit particularly for the price.

Well documented museum narrating the archaeological history of the Iberian peninsula, from the beginnings of human existence through modern civilization. Excellent artifacts of Roman, Catholic, and Moorish civilizations in addition to the entire first floor of pre-history artifacts.
