Historic cemetery in Paris with many famous graves including Jim Morrison, Oscar Wilde, Chopin, Marcel Proust. A very welcome green space with many birds. Many grand family crypts dating back to the 1700s. You could spend hours here but if you are more focussed in your visit them about an hour is probably enough. Free public toilets available near the gates in the middle part of the cemetery.

Great place to get away from the buzz of the city! Calm atmosphere, it was interesting to walk along the graves that have been there for nearly 200 years. It was very fun to „run into“ some of my favourites artists, especially Jim Morrison, even though his grave is a little hidden behind a tree in second row. The cemetery also seems to be the meeting point for some locals, who were all very friendly! Great chance for a quick rest or just a nice walk.

As cemetery’s go this is by far the best I’ve seen! Not that I’ve seen many!! The graves/tombs were a site to be seen. They were huge. Some like small houses. Some must have cost a fortune. The cemetery is huge too. You need good foot ware as the paths are all cobbles. On arrival we were given a map. We intended to find 1 certain grave Oscar Wild which we did. But also came across Fredrick Chopin and Jim Morrison. At these graves there were plenty of other people there looking. A good few hours out as the place was so big. Free and well worth a visit!

Its size is 43 hectares and it contains 70,000 tombs. It opened in 1804. At first it was not well accepted by the Parisians, as they did not want to be buried outside of Paris. Over time, illustrious figures were moved and buried here, which helped it to be accepted by the Parisians. Some famous people are buried here: Delacroix, Isadora Duncan, Gay-Lussac, Chopin, Colette, Jacques-Louis David, Samuel Hahnemann, Edith Piaf, Rossini, Oscar Wilde, Jim Morrison and many others. It is very peaceful to walk along their paths and see tombs that are over a hundred years old and imagine how different the world was back then.

Tombs, Tombs, Tombs and more tombs. This place is flooded with tombs. Each tomb belongs to a prominent family. I admire the architecture and design for each tomb. It seems these tombs belong to rich aristocratic families. There is a lot to see. Better get a warm coffee during winter and walk around. I do not know many famous families of Paris but if you do, you may find it. The chapel was closed so we were not able to view it. What I admired was the doors and the stained glass window inside the tomb. We did not have to pay a fee to visit this place. The bus took us right to where the cemetery was. I always like to read what is written on the tomb but I was not able to find it here. Toilets are available but I discovered often there is a line. You will enjoy it.

This is a beautiful and serene cemetery, which can take a few hours to walk around if you really spend time looking at the diverse and ornate tombs and mausoleums. Even without all of the celebrity tombs belonging to the likes of Jim Morrison (his tomb is almost obscured and sort of hidden) and Edith Piaf, this is still a place of inordinate beauty. Bring comfortable shoes and a bottle of water (in case you get thirsty) and experience one of Paris's most notable landmarks.

One of the most fascinating cemeteries we've ever seen. Full of tombs of famous people from literature and the arts, but also amazing tombs of Paris families. You can go on a treasure hunt to track down big-name tombs or just wander around and soak up the amazing atmosphere. We did both. There may be someone selling maps at the entrance by the Pere Lachaise metro stop, but we didn't need it--the markings on Google Maps were generally very accurate.

One of the most interesting and beautiful places in Paris and at all, with some notable people that are buried here! Including: Edith Piaf, Oscar Wilde, Proust, Balzac, Jim Morisson and more. The cemetery is a beautiful place 🍂 sad but beautiful 😔 especially in the autumn

Frankly , I was skeptical about going to a cemetery. But once I was there , my perspective changed. I haven't seen a cemetery so huge and beautiful. It's really huge.... And so sure it's difficult to cover the whole area. We spent around 3 hours. We randomly explored the place. But you can follow the map and explore the popular graves. The tomb stones and graves were so beautiful, so old. The oldest grave I saw was of the 17th century. Before visiting the place, I would recommend knowing the history of the place. Lots of benches to sit and relax. But don't forget to carry water bottle and snacks. There is a washroom at one of the gates.

A large, quiet cemetery with a couple of famous people buried. At the entrance you'll get a free map of the place. This place is not suitable for wheelchair users and strollers, the road is made of cobblestones. Some gravestones are beautiful works of art, a must to see when you're in the neighborhood!

What a strange , silent and beautiful cemetry; it was more stranger than i think it is; you feel something new; and walking in the routes can give you calmness. Many famous people amoung the other people are sleeping there till infinity . The sounds of birds are heard . I saw Sadegh Hedayat; Gholam Hossein saedi and many other great people; such as artists; painters, musicians and other people .

A free place to spend an entire afternoon walking and admire all the graves and different stories. Very quiet and beautiful even if it's a cemetery. We did not have time to see all graves we wanted cause they were asking people to leave at 5pm45. So kinda sad for doing the 300 meters missing. I recommend to go alone, in family or in group

I had a really great experience visiting Père Lachaise. The cemetery is incredibly well-kept, with clean alleys, tomb stones and graves, irrespective of whether they are home to famous or less famous people. It’s heartwarming to see the respect with which this place is maintained.

Really nice relaxing place. The place was calm and restful and full of interesting memorials. Our family was there to see where my dad’s ashes were sprinkled and we couldn’t have hoped for a better place for him. He’d have loved it. But I have to flag out a couple of things: the toilets there were filthy disgusting, so go before you get there. Secondly, this man latched on to us and followed us around and pointed out various graves. Most of his facts were wrong and we weren’t there as tourists, we were there to pay our respects. Then when we had to go he demanded money, which we neither expected or had. We gave him our only €10 note but he got really abusive and insulted some of our party when he stormed off. Watch out for people like this. We didn’t invite him and his behaviour was inexcusable. I wasn’t expecting anything like that inside, so be warned.

The chance to walk in a museum-like cemetery is unique. You can see the tombs of many famous people and to learn a bit of the history of France. Each part of the cemetery has its own story to tell and if you visit Paris you definitely have to pay a visit. Approximately it takes an hour to make a complete walk around the cemetery.

Was beautiful! We meandered through the stone walkway through the cemetery looking at all the old, moss covered coffins, sarcophagi and mausoleums. We found Jim Morrison's grave stone and Oscar Wild's. It started to rain and it closed so we left. Recommended.

This was the first cemetery I have ever been in my entire life. Apart from the tone and function of the place, everyone has to regard this as one of the city's landmarks. I came to see the tombs of Oscar Wilde and Frederic Chopin, and whilst they were indeed impressive, there are A LOT of other beautiful and remarkable sculptures and statues in honor of the deceased. Definitely a place to visit if you have the chance.

This is a beautiful cemetery, quiet and peaceful, despite the tourists and even tour groups. Download a map of the cemetery to your phone from the map at the entrance and this will help guide you to any specific graves you want to see. Expect some crowds at certain graves - Jim Morrison of course, but also Chopin, Molière, Oscar Wilde etc. Wear good walking shoes and be prepared for cobblestones and a bit of off-roading to find some of the graves. Free entry, be advised that doing this cemetery justice will mean a couple of hours at least. But it truly is a beautiful way to spend the day.

It's a pretty place and definitely worth a look though it's one of the few times I think I'd recommend going with a guide. It's so big you can't find much, event with a map, unless someone is there to direct you. The statuary there generally wasn't as fun and impressive as other cemeteries I've seen (like Recoleta) but it's still worth a visit

An eccentric spot worth visiting in Paris. Here lies many historical figure including Chopin, Oscar Wilde, Edith Piaf, etc. Might not be the best place for picnic but a walk here is definitely something. Calming vibe and quite as a grave (pun intended). Also there's a hill with great city view. Would give 4 stars but end up giving 5 scaring that I might upset the dead.

Big cemetery with many cute tombstones where Chopin is buried. What an amazing place!!! A great place to walk around. We went to see Jim Morrisons grave but the rest of the cemetery turned out to be so much more. It's hard to wrap your head around how much time and money people spent on getting buried. Would absolutely recommend for anyone.

(Translated by Google) It was really a very interesting place to see, a beautiful walk to take that completely changes the sad and gloomy look of cemeteries, the sun was shining and we find ourselves in a place that seems to be full of history with all the graves ... a must see! Only downside there is a regulation which says not to eat and to climb on the graves and obviously some people do not understand a lot of people having lunch and I even saw a couple eating sitting on a grave ... a lack of respect when we know that it remains a cemetery and that there are still burials.

Père Lachaise is still an operating cemetery and accepting new burials. However, the rules to be buried in a Paris cemetery are rather strict: people may be buried in one of these cemeteries if they die in the French capital city or if they lived there. Being buried in Père Lachaise is even more difficult nowadays as there is a waiting list: very few plots are available.

Know that the walking path is really the road and it’s made of larger cobblestones making walking awkward. Suggest sturdy shoes. Get a good map because the cemetery is huge and you can spend a good bit of time searching your way around. Otherwise a beautiful place, interesting architecture, time well spent. Easy to reach and return from via bus and tube.

Through the site of the cemetery, we read its history and looked at the location of the tombstones of famous people (there is also a description of their activities). Find out why the O. Wilde family installed a glass limiter; why the famous journalist Victor Noir has a worn causal place on his tombstone and much more. I advise! (Translated by Google) Breathtakingly beautiful cemetery. You can feel the story unfold at the detours of each alley. As for the team and in particular the master of ceremonies who took care of my sister's funeral, he was just perfect, human while always remaining very professional. He knew how to be close and attentive before, during the ceremony and then for the scattering of the ashes. He allowed my blind mother to do the gesture of scattering my sister's ashes, with him ... with him ... the agreement of the police officer who was there. I will never forget this gesture of incredible kindness and humanity. Don't change anything sir, you are a good and unique being. I highly recommend this extremely beautiful cemetery but also for their teams, dynamic, human, always available and very professional.

Great time to visit in late summer. Visited gravesites for Wilde, Piaf, Morrison and Richard Wright. Had a chance to explore other parts as this is a large cemetery with many beautiful monuments. As a person in French posted, I’d recommend starting in the morning, for less crowding. Grab a glass of red wine beforehand and enjoy!

Unfortunately it was closed the day that we were there. Maybe look it up online before you go just so that you don’t waste your time trekking all the way over there.

This cemetery is almost like a museum. We went there on a perfect grey winter day, it was foggy and also started raining at some point. There are some graves and tombstones of famous people, but we preferred just wandering around instead of doing 'sightseeing'. It is a really beautiful cemetery with very impressive sepultures, some looked like chapels. 1,5 hour was definitely too little time, I wish we had some more time to walk around.

Not just a cemetery, it has a unique atmosphere from the tomb stones that look like masterpiece and the famous people buried there, like Morrison, modigliani, Chopin and many more

Probably the most interesting cemetery in Paris, many famous people found rest in this place like Chopin or Jim Morrison. Worth to visit.

It seems strange to review a cemetery, but it is worth the visit! Spend time honoring the wonderful lives that are in the cemetery. It is larger than you might think and the walkways are cobblestone. Prepare to be there for a while if you are wanting to see numerous sites.

Extremely quiet (no pun intended). Great place to get away from the city. You can wander around the cemetery and view the different kind of tombs. A lot of the graves aren’t well maintained and have fallen apart or broken. We visited the grave of Chopin which I didn’t know was here. There are restrooms too if you’re in need.

This is the most amazing cemetery I will ever see! Cobbled stone roads, mature trees and very interesting tombs! It's a little eerie but very peaceful even with other people walking thru. Everyone is pretty quiet! You've never seen the like! And of course you have to go find Jim Morrison, which is not difficult at all. His is the only cordoned off grave.

This really was an unexpected pleasure. I hadn't expected to spend a few hours wandering around a cemetery but delighted that I did. Whether it's Jim Morrison or Oscar Wilde you've come to find you'll stumble over some fascinating architecture and stories. It was Sunday morning and I was expecting it to be really busy but it wasn't. If you get chance then I would highly recommend that you visit.

Amazing place. The biggest cemetery in Paris opened in 1804. Chopin, Balzac, Modigliani, Jim Morrison, Édith Piaf … 2-3 hours of walking, but if you want to visit more important graves even longer. Some of them are not so easy to find, but don’t give up! Even if you don’t want to find somebody, the place is still worth to visit. History of Paris.

I came mostly for Oscar Wilde. His tomb is impressive and it was a really touching moment for me. You get a free map at the entrance. The whole graveyard is beautiful and a great place to unwind in this busy city. It's free to visit and there are clean toilets there.

Such a beautiful and peaceful place to wander around. We got to see Jim Morrison’s tomb, among so many others, and had a wonderful time exploring this huge cemetery. There are directions to guide visitors around, which are easy to follow, and many places to sit and rest. I love walking around graveyards as I feel they’re so full of history. Seeing all these beautiful graves surrounded by greenery also really challenges the idea of cemeteries being grim, dark places. This place is far from that. I really enjoyed my visit! 🪦🌿
