I'm sitting here with my 93 year old mother, looking at digitized home movies from our 1965 car trip from Caracas to Barinas to Merida and back. We stayed in a small hotel amidst gardens in Merida; there were high clouds that at one point parted to reveal Pico Bolivar floating overhead. We took the Teleferico--an amazing trip from banana plantations to snow (something we hadn't seen since in the years since we'd left the US). We played in the snow--briefly, because of the cold and wind, and the fact that there was no oxygen at around 15,000 feet, and I remember that several people were ill. Spectacular--a wonderful family memory! Ah, Venezuela--I pray for peace and prosperity for you and your wonderful people, of all political persuasions.

I was here a long time ago( 30 years. Not that long) but am still in love with it. And Merida. And the beautiful Venezuelan, and Venezuelans, who taught me so much, that I still remember!

I visited Pico Bolivar 2017 with a good Venezuelan friend. Since I’m not Venezuelan the price was astronomical to ride but I figured it was once in a lifetime. It was better than I had imagined. They had a good restaurant at the first level where one could dine overlooking Mérida. I served a mission with my church back in the ‘80’s to Venezuela and consider it my second country. The country and it’s people are terrific like the teleférico!

Like another individual, I traveled there by Telefèrico back in the 1980’s. It was like no other experience I’ve had. Not only were the views spectacular, the engineering of the Telefèrico was a true modern marvel. Of course, they’ve replaced it all now and it’s different. But I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

I went up to the top of Pico Bolivar when the teleférico was still working. It was one of the most breathtaking sights Ive ever seen. That was in the good old days of Venezuela but not now.
