Located in Adelaide city centre, the South Australian Museum is an amazing natural history museum for you to visit. It can take a few hours if you want to enjoy it thoroughly. For the first time, I was intrigued by the cultural and historical collections of Aboriginal Australia in particular and Australia in general. For those with young children, if you want to bring your kids to a highly educational environment, this is an ideal choice. The staff is very friendly and welcoming.

We’ve been to this museum a few times and never fails to entertain. The fact that it is free for everyone is just too tempting. The collection from ancient Egypt, natural earth beauty, ancient civilisation is educational. A place for youngsters to see, touch and be mesmerised by earth’s wonders. The museum is perfectly laid out. The best part of the museum was the giant squid which few times of visit still gives me the hibby jibbies. It’s everyone’s a must list of places to visit in Adelaide. A place to learn how everything we do in this planet has a cause and effect.

Free entry (I saw some "experience" on Booking who tried to sell tickets for this museum). Great place to discover the aboriginal culture (even if Australian society has a weird way to respect it), earth history, australian fauna, flora and geology. The old gallery is still open, now presenting artifacts from the islands and oceanic territories. If you like history (natural or human), this is a must-see in Adelaide.

Free entry, why not? Anyone interested in ancient Egypt should definitely visit, but be prepared that the Ancient Egypt gallery is a bit dated, small and a bit overloaded with replicas rather than authentic artefacts (still can’t miss seeing the mummies and shabti dolls though). There’s a cool column from an ancient Egyptian temple out in the main foyer! The rest of the museum is quite interesting too and is also much more modern/renovated (decor wise, compared to the Ancient Egypt gallery), the animals section is quite good for kids. Pacific stuff, stuff from Australian Antarctic expeditions, Aboriginal stuff, and definitely a nice collection of minerals, opals, and fossils. Visit: November 2023

I visited Photographer of the Year exhibition and also the large mammals collection. This exhibition is one of the highlights of my year. There are new things to see every year. I make a donation when purchasing my tickets. I also enjoy visiting the shop and its excellent selection of books, educational toys and beautiful handmade items. The restaurant is also worth a visit, with an enjoyable vegan selection. The staff are pleasant, helpful and knowledgeable. I always enjoy visiting South Australian Museum in Adelaide.

Loved the SA museum, lots to see and discover, good for kids and adults. Definitely worth a visit if you are in Adelaide city. It was founded in 1856 and has a collection of over 4 million objects and specimens. Located in the cultural precinct next to Art Gallery of SA.

Loved the SA Museum, is beautiful place where you will find different cultures and a variety of fossils and information about South Australia and it history. The museum offers free entrance to all the rooms, it is composed for three floors, in which you can observe aboriginal history, paintings, pictures, boomerangs and different tools they apply to hunt animals and fishing. Also, you will find minerals, rocks and a bit of geological history from South Australlia. The museum has a big mineral collection with beautiful samples and interesting different minerals. They have a huge amonite and dinosaurs fossils, dinosaurs skeletons and different animals. In the ground floor you will find a. Coffee shop and the museum store to buy some souvenirs.

I recently visited a museum in Adelaide, and it was an amazing experience! The museum has four levels of fascinating exhibits, which made the exploration and discovery process very exciting. The best part is that it's completely free for everyone! The exhibits range from ancient Egyptian artifacts to beautiful natural displays and ancient civilization exhibits, making the experience both educational and entertaining. If you're in town, I highly recommend checking it out.

Great place to spend a rainy day, even more so when it's free! Lots of things to see, perhaps not the easiest place to navigate and a little overwhelming, if I had more time I'd do each section on a different day, as there is so much to see and learn. It was very busy when we went although there is plenty of space for everyone. Highly recommend the minerals section. So many beautiful opals on display!

The South Australian Museum is a very good place to learn about the history and culture of all parts of the world, especially Australia. Extensive exhibits, great management. It's worth coming here many times. A visit takes about one to two hours, of course, if it is just a quick browsing, it will not take that long.

Visited on the 27 April after visiting the migration museum. There are lots to see and learn on the natural history of Australia. Covering topics on the aboriginals, land and marine animals, geology and geography. It was fantastic that there were several sections on aboriginals which covered the Kaurna. Love how a small part of the museum extends into the cafe. Spend at least 3 hours here for a quick walk through, but I reckon a few days would be good. Remember to visit the visitor information counter for a map and ask how to navigate the place.

Had a very good experience with our visit to the South Australian Museum today. The museum has a very good taxidermy collection, fossils, mineral stones and crystals, artwork and other ancient artifacts.

Took the kids to see the Lego Exhibition, was awesome! A little bit pricey, like everything at the museum (for a free venue its a very expensive day out) but the time spent in the Relics Lego Exhibition was worth it, finally something on in Adelaide that my special 16 year old son is into! Really happy to see the museum keeping up with the times. Side note that having the recently deceased flamingo and his friend from Adelaide Zoo right in the walkway of the busiest part on ground floor is an odd choice and a bit confronting, i spent 2 weeks in Adelaide Zoo in the early 90s with the "Bird People", feeding and talking to Chile and Greater daily. Would be 5 stars but there are no budget food or drink options, and there should be more affordable items in the gift shop. Cost of living crisis and all that..

An amazing museum with so much to see and to learn, especially for those into history and science. One whole day is not enough for this museum. The discovery centre is amazing for kids which opens on weekends and Wednesdays and Fridays (10:30am-2:30pm). Well worth a visit to see a working bee hive. Staff are friendly and helpful.

Always find something new here. Can pop to your favourite spots in half an hour or sirens an entire day taking everything in. Each floor has a theme from Aboriginal history to Pacific artifacts and Australian geology. Make sure you check out the giant squid and the taxidermy.

A day at the museum is always a great day out. So many things to see. The staff member at the front desk we spoke with on our last visit was really vivacious and knowledgeable and really listened to what my son wanted to see. My son had wanted a dinosaur toy which there weren't many of but he is delighted with the hippo he ended up with😊

Something for everyone. Minerals exhibit is great with professionally prepared specimens from all over the world. Ediacaran display is the world's first, recommended before visiting the Flinders ranges. The Mawson exhibit has rock samples from Antarctica, those can be seen as dropstones at Inman Valley and Sturt Gorge. Beautiful building from the outside and a maze inside, some displays remain original while other content changes with the times and modern discoveries. Stuffed animals are creepy.

Had a great time here. Free entry to the museum was unexpected as I’m new to SA. Loved the rich history of Australia on display. Really enjoyed the life size animals and the aboriginal art. 5 star for clean organised welcoming venue.

Fantastic collection. They have some great special exhibitions and there are lots of stuffed animals to see which children might enjoy. I love the lion that gives a little flick of the tail every now and then. Their old egyptian room is still a favourite as it hasn't changed and has a different, old school feel to the rest of the museum. The giant squid which goes over several floors of the museum is impressive to see too. It is a great place to come back to time and time again.

Great place to spend time your day, very educational with planty of artifacts display and historic information particularly about how British discover Asia and that is thru India. As Asian, what a great way to learn how Australia( a british colony ) and Asians connected in a way from the past. Located nearby museums, historic statues, memorial landmark, state library and adelaide university.

Definitely a must see museum. And it’s free for the usual exhibits. There’s usually. Special one that would need a tickets. The free one already would take at least 2 hours so this could be a half a day and it’s enjoyable for the whole family. Couple of levels of different types of exhibits. A cafe and museum shop at the end for the one to wants a coffee and a souvenir.

I used to come here a lot between 2001-2013. My recent visit was in Aug 2021. I entered a few minutes after the museum opened and found it to be a relaxing and enjoyable experience. There is a lot of history to enjoy, go alone and really take your time. You will be surprised at how much time you can spend in there.

Awesome. I visited Sydney museum in February and was completely disappointed, BUT the difference between the two is astounding, Adelaides museum is chock a block full of very interesting exhibits, from opelised fossils and an excellent range of contemporary animals to my favourite, the Egyptian period. It was a great experience and loved every minute.

What an awesome museum so interactive and so many facts. I went with my husband and baby and it was awesome you probably need at least and hour to look at everything but you can definitely spend so much more time in there just reading the info. Such awesome display of minerals too it's amazing how rock can be so beautiful. 100% worth visiting when in Adelaide

It was a nice experience but not the most interactive of museums you could go to. I went by myself which I probably wouldn't reccomend and I only had a look at the free exhibition. Seemed quite kid friendly.

Such an interesting museum with a good variety of displays over four levels. The taxidermy displays are especially well presented and clearly labelled. Children and school going students can see the displays up close for educational purposes. Entry is free to the various displays, but there are special exhibitions held occasionally which are chargeable. Walking here from Rundle Mall is barely 5 minutes at normal pace.

My son loves coming to the museum and seeing all the cool exhibits. His favourite is the full sized giant squid that goes from ground level up to the third floor. This was a special Lego exhibit that was on during our last visit
