It is always refreshing and intriguing to come here every couple of months when the new theme is coming up. The arts I saw today is pretty marvellous and strong. The blood-knitting-web seems “awfully splendid “, the horses statues are strong too. And really enjoy this season’s theme. As an art newbie, can’t say I have lots to say but they do make me thinking and enjoying.

Great place to visit, very well laid out and designed to accommodate everyone, including the disabled. Excellent range of artworks (My son Kurt during his 2022 Adelaide Fringe award-winning 'alternative tour' / performance of the AGSA : 'Nutritional Index' - won the Best Visual Art and Design award! EDIT: Now also up for SALA 2022 awards!

A medium sized gallery displaying a selection of early Australian paintings mixed together with modern contemporary artworks. It's well worth a visit to have a look at.

The most outstanding collection of Australian impressionist artwork and surprisingly incredible level of European and Japanese art also present. Totally defied my expectations. Staff up front were eager and helpful, and a polite guard explained the story behind one of my fathers favourite paintings.

A great place for inspiration and spending the weekend. Free entry. There is tours but pre-book needed. Self guided tour takes 1.5-2hours. There is a small cafe on site, food is nice with affordable price.

Cultured, tasteful, pleasant, exciting. These words for me sum up the Art Gallery of SA. I visit here twice a year, and they seem to update their walls frequently, so there is always new exhibits for you to see. It’s family friendly and has areas where children can sit and draw or play. It’s has elements of a museum, depicting the varied history of this state. They also have an extensive modern art section, so there great scope in what’s on display. I highly recommend you come by and check it out.

A great place with great masterpieces. It’s free to access. They have guided tours happening at 3 different times during the day. It wasn’t crowded, but the place wasn’t deserted too. The art gallery has a cafeteria too. From art to ornaments to biological concepts to aboriginal art, this place displays a great collection even with origins from other countries. I would say it takes atleast about an hour to properly cover the place. It’s quite big. No parking since it’s in the heart of the city. You have to park somewhere else and get here.

As i undrrstand it the Art Gallery of South Australia was first established as the National Gallery of South Australia in 1881. It is situated on the cultural boulevard of North Tce in Adelaide amongst similar, grand, period buildings. It has a collection of almost 45,000 works of art, making it the second largest state art collection in Australia. I enjoy the colonial period art depicting the early days of Adelaide and the first Australian collection. Where did Jeffery Smart go. Perhaps on loan to the National Gallery with their Smart exhibition. Nice shop. Good cafe Enjoy some time here.

The Art Gallery of South Australia (AGSA), established as the National Gallery of South Australia in 1881, is located in Adelaide. It is the most significant visual arts museum in the Australian state of South Australia. It has a collection of almost 45,000 works of art, making it the second largest state art collection in Australia (after the National Gallery of Victoria). As part of North Terrace cultural precinct, the gallery is flanked by the South Australian Museum to the west and the University of Adelaide to the east. As well as its permanent collection, which is especially renowned for its collection of Australian art, AGSA hosts the annual Festival of Contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art known as Tarnanthi, displays a number of visiting exhibitions each year and also contributes travelling exhibitions to regional galleries. European (including British), Asian and North American art are also well represented in its collections.

Beautiful gallery with so many different kinds of art to view. They have free daily tours at 11am and 2pm so for a more complete experience, get to their entrance reception a few minutes before those times to join the tours.

This gallery is a great place to visit, and it's free. It boasts a comprehensive collection of both Australian and European art, as well as interesting furniture and art objects that complement the paintings well. It's definitely worth spending time here.

Absolutely loved the Art Gallery, the variety, the colour and especially the Love & Revolution exhibition. Enjoyed lunch at the cafe while being serenaded by a Mariachi band!

The Frida and Diego exhibition was so beautifully put together, and it was incredible seeing her art up close! The recreations of her clothing was a nice touch. And there was a live band performing when we went. Amazing exhibition! And the gallery is always beautifully maintained and with lovely, helpful staff.

The museum itself was beyond my expectations. There were many precious artworks from all over the world. From Rodin to Yayomi Kusama and Australian artists. Minimum 3 hours are needed to check each piece. There is also currently Andy Warhol exhibition until May. I skipped it as I saw Warhol’s artworks a few times in different countries but it should be visited if you are yet to see the Warhol’s world .

I feel like I will never get bored of coming here. Sure it’s not as big as other cities, but the building in itself is art! Such a stunning place, and a wonderful collection and variety of art. I’ve been here many times and will continue to visit every now and then :)

The staff in the main entrance were helpful with navigating the guide map before entering the gallery. Variety of art from Australia and other countries—art pieces, paintings, videos. Plenty of spaces to move around which is important as some people might take some time appreciating and reading some displays and descriptions. There is a cafe inside with food and drinks available which is located in front of the gallery shop.

Wish we left more time to visit this gallery because wow it was much better than we expected! I really liked the layout of the art pieces, so much spatial potential to work with in photos and in real life when you’re browsing.

Service: Definitely worth going when you visit or live in Adelaide. I’ve been here twice. The second time was to see the Frida Kahlo exhibition. It was amazing. Price: Most of the art exhibitions are free and only their special collections that you need to pay. Transportation: You can use the free transport which is the tram stop at Art Gallery/Museum or use the 99C or 98C free bus city loop and stop at G1 north side.

A wonderfully spacious gallery with a vast collection of art pieces covering a variety of painters and artists, and plenty of seats to lounge on to admire the art from as you wander around. Plenty of experiences to stimulate the mind, all encased in a very peaceful environment. Even if you have a passing curiosity in art, go and check this gallery out.

I didn't expect much but this gallery was quite impressive. The featured art was stunning with a variety of styles including impressionist, dada, chinese, renaissance, religious and contemporary. Noteworthy pieces included the provoking horse corpse and a white room filled with red yarn. Loved it and recommended to all my friends!

I love this wonderful gallery ❤. I have visited many galleries throughout the world and this is by far one of my favourites. The gallery has a generous art space filled with stunning works and it regularly hosts 'touring' collections. The Cafe and gallery shop are lovely, the staff and volunteers welcoming and knowledgeable, and the gallery, which offers free entry, is perfectly situated in the city of Adelaide. Definitely deserving of a five 🌟 review and a must for tourists and locals alike.

Only had enough time to wander around the free exhibitions. I loved the curation of the art. Lovely building. Would definitely return next time I'm in Adelaide.

This is a wonderful gallery to spend time in. It contains a most comprehensive collection of both Australian and European art. It also has some interesting items of furniture and other art objects which combines well with the paintings.

Wonderful collection of art was nicely displayed and convenient to walk through The tour guides were very thorough, However whilst I understand this is not a museum rather a gallery but it would be nice to see a public entry exhibition every now and then  Just to help showcase the unique art community We have here in South Australia.

Since 1900 Art Gallery of South Australia has housed some of the best paintings 🖼️ photographs and other curios. They have so many different exhibitions from time to time. I really enjoy their first Fridays. On first Fridays they offer curated programme of live music, talks and tours. It’s free. Can grab something to eat from the cafe and a coffee or a glass of wine 🍷 some events are ticketed events. Better buy the tickets 🎫 to those ticketed events prior to arriving at the venue.

The Art Gallery of South Australia (AGSA) is a great place worth taking children to visit and experience art. It is free. The staff is very nice, helpful and professional. There are some Free Tours almost everyday, which children like very much and get some new experiences. We walked across the Adeliade University campus from the beautiful Torrens River to reach AGSA. I think we will go there again.

It is absolutely free. Located within nearby historic spots, memorial landmarks, museums and the University if Adelaide. A huge art gallery with a variety displays of ART pieces of Australians or part of Australia's history (arts frm Asia, India and many more). Sea of lights is really the highlight. It is very colourful, sensual and creative.

I always enjoy going to the Art Gallery. My grandchildren love the children's activity area. The cafe is awesome. There are many great displays and exhibitions so always something new as well as fixed exhibitions worth visiting over and over!

Kind staff, various exhibitions, and originally I like this place. Especially ‘Sea of Lights’ which I watched yesterday, was really a creative and sensual experience for the child. My son loved it so much.

The Art Gallery is a great place. It has such a long way. The range of artist both national and international are excellent and the indigenous Gallery is superb. I love the art gallery store. There is a great range of books and gifts. The restaurant and outdoor area is set in beautiful surroundings.

A quiet stroll among the collection is always a pleasure. I was very pleased by the reception at the door and explanation of current and upcoming exhibitions. Some great old works as well as Avant guard on display. Nice coffee n cake. I am not happy to see the dead horse in the entry, makes me very sad. No artistic merit at all and quite disturbing. Let them know what you think on your next visit. But do visit it is worth while.

Last I was here, was with a friend. Some time ago. I hope there are more Resting Spots within each Gallery. Some do have leather benches. As you may need to sit to take your time to take In the Art Works in each Room. Lifts are there. As option to the Hitchcock-ian Stairs. Lunch and Good Coffee etc. Nice quiet views, glass panes to the floor all around. Though you can not Review Apps , I am very impressed by the Arts and Culture App, Free of charge, in the App Store when you type in Free Arts & Culture App. I am recommending it here, because I can not physically walk around such a big Space as our Art Gallery in the CBD. I know I am not alone. What is so amazingly wonderful about this Free App for art lovers, beginners and physically challenged, is that there is an in built VIRTUAL TOUR - you press the arrows in the direction of the presenting Room you want to see more of, and when you have had your Fill, you press on the easy to see arrows that take you OUT of That last Room, into another. This Virtual Tour really is like being there! You could even make yourself a great drink and a Snack, sit in your Favourite place, and Enter our Art Gallery from where ever you are. That’s my plug. Adelaide may be small, and not so exciting as Melbourne, but we are an Arty Place, so always Art somewhere. 😊🎭

The mix of classic and contemporary is 👌. The space itself is lofty and we'll lit. Staff are so friendly. Just go.

  • 4/5 Emma B. 8 months ago on Google
The Art Gallery is free to visit, but you need to pay for special visiting exhibitions such as the Frida and Diego one I went to see. They have some amazing aboriginal art there and a mixture of more modern art and more traditional art. It doesn't have any of the more famous artworks like the impressionist works at the Musee D'Orsay and the National gallery in England, but it is a lovely place to visit and has a delicious cafe on site.

This happened last 11 July Monday, between 2:00-2:15pm: We were on a short holiday trip from Melbourne exploring the beautiful Adelaide and so we went to the Art Gallery of SA yesterday and sadly, experienced being discriminated by one of their roving security staff. Everything so far went excellent, enjoyed their spacious hallways making us feel the artworks were even more emphasised, and loved everything we saw spending more than an hour I guess, then decided to make our way out. Halfway down to the entrance a middle-aged gentleman (roving security staff based on his uniform, all-black plus the badge/s and radio, as that of the others we had met inside) approached us and reminded my wife of a safer way she could carry her mid-sized handbag should she come across any artwork. Mind you, neither of us weren't even close to any artwork as we were on our way out, and that we had crossed paths with a few other security staff before him and we weren't called out or anything. I thought, alright I'd thank him for his reminders and say we were actually leaving but he continued speaking and all of a sudden told us, "OBVIOUSLY IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND ENGLISH YOU CAN JUST LOOK AT HOW I MOVE MY HANDS..", then exaggeratedly pantomime himself repeating the above. I couldn't believe what just happened and so I said quickly, "OF COURSE WE UNDERSTAND ENGLISH AND WE KNOW WHAT YOU ARE SAYING.." , I hadn't even finished speaking yet he rushed his way away from us. That point I realised he just wanted to discriminate us let alone racially profile us. On our way down I spoke to the lady at the reception and narrated what happened. She was lovely and apologetic enough and told me she would pass it on. Thought I'd share this here because that experience was awful.

The art gallery is a classical sandstone building filled with artwork from the basement to the top floor. It looks better with the un-compatible modern sculpture moved away. Displaying modern and classical art together hurts both: classical looks dated and modern appears unfinished or primitive. The current arrangement is a big step in the right direction (in my view). We came to see the pumpkin installation by Yayoi Kusama which was a pleasant surprise. Revisiting my favourites, the applied arts hidden in the basement, will have to wait until next time.

I felt like a 65 year old with red frame reading glasses when I had this delicious pumpkin soup with sourdough on a slightly chilled autumns day today. The South Australian art gallery is world class in its offerings and the management is exceptional. I come here all the time and love it.

Beautiful art gallery to visit while in SA, the ladies at the reception were so lovely & knowledgeable. Plenty of seats should you need to take a break every now and then. So many different style of art in different rooms. Allow 90 minutes at least.

You can go in for free and brought our tourist friends here and it was great and we all had a lovely experience. There was though a minor incident where one of my friend’s mom sat on a chair that was for display and it wasn’t meant to be sat on. Would be nice if there’s a bigger sign so that even the elderly can see it. If you have a backpack, you have to wear it in front. I always love the upside down tree installation that goes around. It is relaxing. It’s also nice there’s place to eat downstairs at the lower level. Worth a visit.
