Quite an achievement to hide an archaeology site as well as this! The entrance is very deceptive, a bit like a modern glass house until you realise you have been walking over the canopy of the dig below. Inside the friendly staff will spend time explaining the background if you wish or you can watch the short video presentation. Once you have perused the displays on the ground floor, you can descend into the basement where the real fun begins. The dig extends much further than you might expect from outside the building, and the artefacts on show are superb. Entrance is only two euros for quite a unique experience.

Lovely experience. Don't rush through the exhibits. Read the explanations and visualize the history. They try very well to make you imagine how things were. If you like museums and history go in.

Worth a visit. From the outside it may look closed, but just walk in. The entrance is super cheap, only 2€ per person which makes it a no brainer to visit if you have any interest in roman history of Valencia itself. The site is incredibly well maintained and everything is indoor + airco. All info signs are also in English. The 'water roof' is also a very nice touch.

An excellent experience, which will indulge you into Valencia's centuries long history. It is breathtaking what lies underneath the surface of today's city. Everything is nicely prepared and described. We have also loved the clean way how the modern architecture of the premises meets respectfully the ancient remains.

(Translated by Google) Interesting archaeological center to see the old Valencian civilizations: from Rome to the present day, passing through Visigothic or Islamic Valencia. It is also interesting how you can see the different levels of the cities, the reconstructions made with video montages, the 2 impressive columns of the ancient Roman forum, the small pond created on what were the Roman baths ... there is a bit of everything. The pity is that the excavation could not continue because it would touch the foundations of the basilica and the cathedral ... because it must follow the story down there. Admission is free, although I do not know if it is only at this time.

Nice little museum right in the middle of old town. In an modern building, unspectacular. Most of it is underground, excavations preserved, bits of Valencia thousands of years ago. The museum is a bit dark, narrow, corridors, glass floors, stairs, tight passages. I imagine in the summer crowds it could be stuffy and cramped. Lots of broken ceramic, clay pots everywhere, not very interesting. Two skeletons are interesting but no idea who those folks were or how they got there. One broken white pot looks detailed, beautiful, but the rest are boring. They have large posters trying to give a sense of what main street looked like original stones, patterns copied on the poster. A nice touch. But the rest is rather simple and plain. Museums, in general, struggle to help our imaginations put ourselves in these streets, washing in those pots. Like stories, movies, paintings...museums understand if it's not about us, if it's not personal, if we can't empathize, we're not really interested. This one doesn't get there, needs to try harder. Perhaps a movie, perhaps dioramas... Cost is only 2E (less than a coffee), free on weekends, so it's worth all of that, if you have time in the city.

A museum hidden under the famous cathedral of valencia. It is quite interesting to know the facts about the moorish and christian influences of this archaeological site. It is also free so add this to your itinerary if you like to explore museums!

Wow this place was a fabulous find. It an achalogical dig back thousands of years ago, there’s some amazing roads, paths, buildings, there video and well as plaques so you can really see what it would have looked like. We went on a Thursday in July and it was free. It was spotlessly clean, staff were friendly but didn’t speak English but we got by with our best Spanish and finger pointing. All information was written in Spanish and English which was brilliant. There were steps and ramps so I’m pretty sure a wheelchair and pushchair could get around. There were toilets but no cafe. Definitely worth a visit, I will definitely be taking family when they come to visit.

Frankly speaking I had more expectations before visiting this place than this museum can offer. Here you can find some archeological findings from a city square. The only interesting part was that visitors have a chance to “participate” in archaeological excavations. The glass floor and the artifacts that lie nearby help to “transport thoughts” to ancient times. Unfortunately, there is no signpost in the museum, so it is difficult to guess where a starting point is.

The way they have surrounded the historical foundation of the city give it even more emphasis. The arab and roman ruins are subsequent and you can see how well preserved is this place.

Interesting and worth a visit. However, it’s hot and musty in there. When we came out we felt physically ill and my wife said that she saw mould on the ceilings. They definitely need to improve the air circulation.

Not to be missed! Nicely done viewing of old Roman excavations that are informative and interesting and allow you to basically walk around and on top of the excavation site. All in a nicely done environment with English info too. And the best part of it it is usually not busy at all and is really inexpensive. Highly recommended!!

Fantastic . I don’t know why more people don’t visit this truly fascinating underground museum. It has incredibly well preserve ruins from -100AD to the 12th century. The interpretation boards outline what each foundation was, how it was built, what it used to look like. It’s fascinating to see how each generation built their town on the ruins of their predecessors. It’s only 2€, free with the Valencia card, the building is air-conditioned, and there was nobody else there when we visited at about 11am. .

As someone else mentioned, it looks closed from the outside so don't be deterred by appearances! It is a beautiful space, combining the modern architectural glass roof with the remains underneath which creates water reflections on the remains. The remains themself are impressive and give the visitor an insight into Valencia's ancient history. And all for only 2€. Excellent value and worth a visit

Valentia is one of the oldest cities of Spain and the center of Roman Valentia can be found under the ground just behind the Basilica. The Roman Forum was discovered when plans were made to enlarge the basilica. Today you can visit parts of the Roman Forum, houses and streets in the museo dell´Almoina. With different maquettes and films, you can visualise how the city would have been. It has all been shown in a very interactive way, but due to covid some of the screens are not accessible but given the free admission it still is worthwhile the visit.

  • 5/5 Cheryl S. 2 years ago on Google
We arrived with less than an hour before closing time, so admittance was free. We didn't get to see everything and look forward to going back. Walk along the ruins of Romans and other cultures to learn a bit about what life there was like a thousand years and more ago.

This is a magnificent archeological site. The presentation isn’t always perfect but I consider this site a must-visit part of a trip to Valencia. Is the point of archeology to balance our permanence of the present to the evidence of the past? I don’t know. But the uncanny array of the levels of civilization on display at this amazing site helps give a sense of what’s come before in progressive layers of excavation. I’m amazed that this site isn’t higher on lists of “must-do” when in Valencia.
