Crandon
park
is
a
former
zoo
turned
into
a
beachfront
park
on
the
island
of
Key
Biscayne,
between
the
Virginia
Key
Park
and
the
Lighthouse
"Bill
Baggs
Cape"
Park
of
Southern
Key
Biscayne.
The
zoo
closed
in
the
mid
1960s
after
a
hurricane
drowned
parts
of
the
island
and
many
of
its
animals,
and
subsequently
became
a
botanic
park
(check
out
its
unique
history
and
old
videos
online).
The
southern
section
of
the
park
still
preserves
some
of
the
old
enclosures
and
houses
a
number
of
animals,
including
American
Crocodiles,
Peacocks,
birds,
iguanas,
lizards,
turtles,
tortoises
and
other
species.
Follow
the
"south
beach"
sign
when
driving
southbound,
the
southernmost
parking
lot
of
Crandon
Park
is
adjacent
to
this
former
zoo
section
that
is
now
a
public
botanical
garden.
Great
opportunity
to
enjoy
some
South
Florida
wild
nature
in
the
middle
of
Miami-Dade
when
going
to
the
beach.
The
waters
are
nicer
at
the
Lighthouse
park
(the
southernmost
park
of
Key
Biscayne),
but
this
section
is
unique
and
deserves
a
visit.
