This is one of the very ancient three Bhadrakali temples where Devi is seen as the protector of the region. Three Bhadrakali temples include Thirumaandhamkunnu(Malappuram Dist), Kodungallur Sri Kurumba(Thrissur Dist) and Panayannarkavu(Pathanamthitta Dist). These three temples were said to be consecrated by Parasurama himself and are supposed to protect north(Thirumandhamkunnu), middle(Kodungallur) and southern(Panayannarkavu) Kerala respectively. Recently because of various reasons Panayannarkavu is not much in limelight but the deity is equally powerful as that of the other two. Many mystic tales of Yakshis also relates to the temple. It has reference in Kottarathil Sankunni's Aithihyamala. Nearest is the temple town of Mannar which is well known for Metal industries related to Odu(a bronze like esoteric metal alloy used for making vessels used for traditional rituals and cooking). Parumala church is another attraction which a well known pilgrimage centre for Christian community. Nearest railway station is at Thiruvalla. Buses plies all throughout working hours.

പരുമല വലിയ പനയന്നാർകാവ് ദേവി ക്ഷേത്രം) is an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Sri Badrakali and Lord Shiva is situated on the banks of the Pampa river at Parumala of Pathanamthitta District in Kerala state in India.[2] The Panaynararkavu Temple is one of the three most important Bhadrakali temples in Kerala. Thirumandhamkunnu Temple in Malabar, Kodungallur Temple in Cochin and Panayannarkavu Temple in Travancore is almost equally important.[3] References to this temple are found in Aithihyamala of Kottarathil Sankunni and Unnuneeli Sandesam, the classics of Malayalam Literature. According to folklore, sage Parashurama has installed the idol of Lord Shiva and devi idol installed by sage Durvasaand Narada in the Treta Yuga. The temple is a part of the 108 famous Shiva temples in Kerala.[4]

Panayannarkavu Kavu temple is where the Sapta Matas, or the Seven Mother Goddessesare worshipped as the presiding power in the Pathanamthitta district of the Indian state of Kerala. The fiercest of them all, Chamundi, is in centrally placed as Kali. There is also a temple of Siva on the premises. The modest temple is located in a grove near Parumala and is meandered by a tributary of the Pampa river. The temple is 2 miles from Mannar, a village known for its bell-metal lamps and vessels. Until recently, esoteric tantric rituals were conducted in this Saktheya temple.

One of the oldest temple.... Sri Bhadrakali Temple at Valiya Panayannarkavu is the most famous among such temples in Kerala. References to this temple are found in Aithihyamala and Unnineelisandesham, the classics of Malayalam Literature. The pleasant natural surroundings of Parumala and the grace of the Mother Goddess in her ferocious Avatar as Bhadrakali, bestowing Her blessings on the devotees are famous even in other States. Tall Palmira trees and pristine green forests, and the idols of Nagarajas and Nagayakshis which bestow their boons on those devoted to them, can be found at five spots in the Complex. The Omnipotent Lord Siva , installed during the Thretayuga ( about five thousand years back) by Sage Parasuram faces the Holy Pampa river, Westrward. Devi Bhadrakali, in Her Avatar as the slayer of Dariakasura faces East
