If you stay in Cochin it is a must to visit the daily Kathakali Show. Kathakali is the classical dance-drama of Kerala. Be there one hour before the show starts and also watch the Kathakali Makeup performance. Each character is instantly recognisable by their characteristic makeup and costume. All the colours used in the make-up are obtained from natural substances and herbs.

Good setting with comfy air con and English explanation of the performances. This makes it easier to relax and enjoy the art. Nice that we need not go out to Fort to see the dance.

We had some difficulty in finding the place at first. The costume part and the party where the different moods and emotions were explained were extremely engrossing. Performance was also good.

Watching Kathakali up-close was spectacular. The program starts right from the make-up. Then, a brief explanation of the basic Kathakali expressions and gestures. Finally, the Kathakali performance. It was a wonderful experience. Highly Recommended!

Mesmerising experience , we missed it on day one . My wife suggested this to be a must do in Kochi based on her research online . We reached a bit late on day one , so we made it a point to be there the next day. The host and the teacher there is extremely well mannered and good to speak to . He informed us that he will reserve two seats for us. He kept his word , ticket is 500 per person . it starts with the makeup of the artists which is done in minute details and you get to experience it right in front of you. It's a small hall with a stage. Then each artist will display different Kathakali emotions , help you understand the basics with a audio in the background. Ends with a performance from any of the ancient scriptures. Bit difficult to locate though

Cochin Art Centre offers a fleeting glimpse of the classical dance form, Kathakali, in all its glory. Right from the makeup, applied by the experienced artists themselves to the facial expressions and body forms to the final hair-raising experience of true Kathakali dance; this two hour visit was a consolidation of it all. Pure wonder and awe! Keep an entire evening free for this if you really wanr to enjoy it thoroughly because the makeup starts at least an hour prior to the show. Don't miss it. Call the numbers given on their official page for reservations. The manager is a very warm man and if you stay back for a bit after the show, he will answer any queries you have.

A good way to experience an ancient art. Learn about the tradition and watch a short performance. It is well balanced to keep the audiences entertain without becoming tedious.
