Hey.. this is such an interesting experience to try in Chennai. You can see the beautiful long stretch of Marina, the fishing boats, the broad view of beach road and the sprawling campuses on the other side. Best thing is you can really gaze at the horizon for long - blending of sky and ocean end. The premises is maintained really well. In the ground floor there are few boards explaining some interesting facts about lighthouses in India. This light house is the only one in city limits in India & actively guides the ships and fishermen. It will be great for kids too. Simple things are the real fun. Few suggestions 1. Make this the first item or early one in your itinerary. They actually open punctually - just be there before 10 AM to beat the crowd and also the security will allow for long time on the top. 2. Car and bike Parking is right behind the place. Take the lane next to the building.

Had visited the place a few decades ago and then it was a beautiful place but today it was just an opposite! As we stayed close by came here early morning. The whole area was littered with trash and people from the nearby quarters been using this beach area as their bathroom! Place is full of small shops of all kinds, tea, juice and just selling fish. So the whole area was smelling badly. We had to literally watch each feet step we were taking. To add to woes, the railway metro project in full swing and the construction material, sheds, debris made it absolutely no no to visit the place. Talking of the light house, it was ironically not in the limelight

The lighthouse is one of the main attractions of Chennai. It is close to marina beach so if you are going to marina beach don't forget to visit the lighthouse. The entry tickets are Rs 20/- per adult. There is also a small museum in the lighthouse where you can see different types of equipment that are used in a lighthouse. The technological advancements that took place in the last 100 decades in lighthouse equipment are displayed here. Moreover, the top view of the lighthouse is just fantastic. You need to go through a lift to the 9th floor. The marina beach view from that high is mesmerizing. The cool breeze coming from the sea will calm your mind. The view of the city is fabulous. You can get some great photos from the top of the lighthouse. A must-visit place.

Chennai lighthouse is a must-visit place for anyone to enjoy the most breathtaking view of the majestic marina beach which is the second largest urban beach in the world. The charge to enter the lighthouse is 20 rupees per adult and 10 for children. Once entered, we are directed to the lift which takes us 9 floors high to reach the top. Then we are required to walk a few steps to reach the top of the lighthouse to reach the panoramic viewpoint. The cool breeze and the cool view just give us chills. They give us a maximum of 15 minutes to enjoy the view. The lighthouse opens at 10:30 and it is recommended to visit it before 11 to avoid the crowd. It's definitely worthy.

Incredible views of Marina Beach and the cityscape can be had from the top of the Lighthouse. All those who are here to spend some time away from the overcrowded areas of the city will find Marina Lighthouse to be a delightful experience. Additionally, a small park can be found on the premises. Currently, the lighthouse is an 11-story triangular cylindrical concrete structure with a lantern and white bands. Attached to the tower is a circular, three-story harbor control facility. At 57 meters above the mean sea level, the light source is located at a height of 45.72 meters in the tower.

If you want to see Marina beach in sky view, it would be good. They had museum where different periods of light sources used are described. That found to be interesting. Another specialist is you could use a lift. They have quoted that this is a rare light house which have stairs. If you are visiting beach it is good to see to experience the another beach view

A very nice view of Chennai from this fairly newest built lighthouse in the city. Beautiful to see Chennai during sunset. Be sure to purchase a photo pass if you intend to record and take photos with your camera. A nice vantage point to see the city in a distance as well as the ocean. You can also see a full view of the beaches from here. Well worth the visit when you're visiting for the first time.

Good one. Can visit if ur by the beach. Entry is 20rs and 5:30pm is closing time. Observatory is in 9th floor and has lift feature. Waiting time would be approx 10mins and u can spend max 5 mins at top. Pros : Gorgeous view of the shoreline, pleasant experience Cons : 1. 5mins is max time you can spend at top. After that security would be constantly asking you to move. But the thing is at the entrance the waiting time in approximately 10 minutes. If the time at observatory is more than 5mins, then ur waiting time might get considerably higher. So have to sacrifice something. 2. There is a big grill at the observatory to prevent ppl from jumping or falling. It might feel like a hindrance but it's for safety. View is epic ! Must visit if ur by the side.

Such a historic beach ..now in poor state of cleanliness n hygiene . The government is doing their best but each individual carries responsibility for the maintenance of the beach. It's full of waste food materials, plastic cover, water bottle, liquor bottles. Even the shop keeper in the beach side should ensure their shop waste is removed at the end of the day. The public toilet is pathetic. No drinking water facility.Hope things will be back after metro work is completed. Guys pls take responsibility.

One of the wonderful experience in the light house.... Standing up in the sky... The light is holiday on Monday, and the regular opening time is 10am - 1pm and 3am - 5:30pm.... The entry charge will be around Rs.20-30... Don't forget to check out the museum in the light house.... The museum is at the back of the building....

Beautiful operational lighthouse located near the Marina beach. You can go to the top after buying a ticket for nominal price. The view from above is amazing, specially if you are there just before sunset. You can see the city all around and view on each side will treat your eyes with its beauty. Just be aware that they do not allow entry after 5:30 pm, so be there before that.

The only Light house in Chennai City is at Marina Beach. It is a pleasure to go up to 9 floors by elevator and another floor you have to walk on the steps to reach the view point. From there you can see Marina Beach as well as sea. It is a fantastic view and cool air. Every one must experience this feeling. Timings 10 am to 1 pm and 3 pm to 5 pm. Adult fee Rs.20/- and kids RS. 10/-.

The lighthouse's viewing point is 46m above the sea level and the 360° view of Chennai city and Marina beach is splendid. The viewing point is located in 10th floor. Electric lift is available. People aren't allowed to climb the stairs. There is a lighthouse museum which showcases different types of lighting equipments that were used in the past. A good place to bring kids.

This light house is Signature of chennai. My son loved to see the full view of pattinampakkam to marina beach. Children's must love this place. Must try. Entry ticket for adult is rs.20 and rs.10 for kids. Maximum time is 5minutes to spend in the top floor. Some bad smell was disturbed in top of the floor because of some sea birds. My advice to use mask. This is children's spot.

I would highly recommend that you plan visit on a weekday afternoon (if possible). The views from the gallery are breathtaking and if you're a photography enthusiast, this is a great opportunity to get some great wide angle and telephoto shots! I wouldn't recommend the morning, because the sun being high in the East will ruin your beach shots. The lighthouse also has a small (air conditioned) museum in the ground floor with models of ancient and recent lighthouse instruments where you can spend a good 30 minutes. There is a lift to the top to see some great views. You cannot walk around the whole of the top (3 and a bit sides), but you can get a full 360 view. Very cheap - 50rs for foreigners whilst only 20 for Indians. But for 75p that's worth it. Not really anything else to do at the top so you only really spend 10 minutes or so before going back down. Well worth a visit if you're visiting the beach of the Mahata Ghandi statue at the same time. Chennai light house is a wonderful construction located at the end of Mareena Beach towards Santhome. Most of the people think its of no use going on top and there is not much to see. But it is an amazing opportunity to see the sea and the Mareena beach road from the top of the light house. It's an awesome experience that everybody should try. I strongly recommend you take your young children and explain the purpose of it. So it will be more intresting for young kids. tiny park for kids as well as a musiuam along with the light house it is situated a with a small compound in between main road and the marina beach and very close to light house railway station and city center mall... attractive place but be careful if you are along with kids lift facilities available if wish to visit to the top of the light house and due to croud try to visit before eve at 5.Marina Beach, Chennai is by far among the best beaches in India. But, if you have not experienced it atop the Light House, you missed its breathtaking beauty. There is a museum there too. A very inconspicuous tower that you could easily ignore as you pass the road. And yet, as you experience its view it leaves behind an eternal impression of Chennai's uniqueness, history and beauty.

Dating back to the 1790s when the British East India Company commissioned the Chennai Lighthouse, it stands proudly almost 50 metres tall overlooking the bay. The lighthouse was initially established as a navigational aid to guide ships safely into the Madras Harbour. Ascending its approximately 270 steps provides a captivating view of the urban landscape flanking the beach on both sides. It has consistently served as a crucial beacon for sailors, offering guidance and serving as a reference point for navigators. Notably, during World War II, the lighthouse played a strategic role in supporting vessels and monitoring coastal activities. Nowadays, the lighthouse continues its vital role, guiding ships safely into the bustling Chennai Harbour. Its presence is a reminder of Chennai's rich maritime history and its ongoing connection with the sea.

Nice view up there. Elevator services are available. Brief history The Chennai Lighthouse, an iconic maritime structure, has played a crucial role in India's coastal history. Its history dates back to 1796 when the British East India Company decided to establish a navigational aid to guide ships into the Madras Harbor. The original lighthouse was a masonry tower, standing 65 feet tall, and equipped with an oil lamp that emitted a fixed light. In 1977, the lighthouse was upgraded with a rotating optic, increasing its visibility range and making it more efficient in guiding ships. Over the years, the Chennai Lighthouse underwent multiple renovations and technological advancements. It continued to serve as a vital beacon for sailors and a point of reference for navigators. During World War II, it played a strategic role in assisting vessels and monitoring coastal activities. The lighthouse's current structure, standing at 150 feet, was constructed in 1976. It is equipped with modern equipment, including a powerful electric lamp and an automated mechanism for rotating the optic. The distinctive red and white stripes of the tower make it a recognizable landmark along the Marina Beach. Today, the Chennai Lighthouse stands as a symbol of maritime heritage and a testament to the city's seafaring legacy. It remains an essential part of the coastal infrastructure, guiding ships safely into the Chennai Harbor.

This lighthouse is one tall structure to view whole of Chennai’s famous Marina Beach from a bird’s eye view. You can view the city skylines during the day but it is closed after 6 PM and if given a chance at night will be a fascinating view to see the city. Better to go at morning when the crowd is less.

It's a nice place for a short visit at Chennai, right at the starting point of Marina Beach. It's an awesome view point for the entire beach, beach road etc. You get to capture a great view of almost entire stretch of the beach, road, vehicles etc while the heavy wind blowing on to your face. It's open and narrow area on top with the safety of grill. All are supposed to go in lift till 9th floor. Staircase seems to have been closed for public. There's a small museum behind the building in the ground floor which people may miss if not known to them as it's behind. Important Notes: Only 10 people are allowed inside at a time. Timing: 10am to 1pm & 3pm to 6pm Holiday: Monday Ticket fee: Adults ₹20, Children below 12yr ₹10, Photograph ₹25 Parking: plenty of parking space on beach but very busy and tight in the evenings after 5pm especially on the weekends.

I went to the light house with my friend it was really a great experience to view the city from the light house. The beauty of the marina and the road from that view was simply awesome. And the housing area view from the top as a treat to watch. And they have a charge of 20rs per person for viewing from the lighthouse. And i couldn't see the entire view since there was an issue with the honey bee in one section. The view of the chidambaram stadium and city centre was also the notable things to watch.

Add this to your bucket list when visiting Chennai. The entry fee is 20 bucks and the views of the city are spectacular. Sadly, they allow only 5 minutes to view.

  • 4/5 Umesh S. 11 months ago on Google
We went to the Lighthouse located at the start of the Marina beach in the evening at 8.30pm. The lighthouse is functional and is used by the ships and the fishermen. It was working at the time. They do allow entry inside and take a lift to the top of the lighthouse from 10 am to 1 pm... & 3 pm to 6 pm on payment of nominal charges. There is some waiting time which is to be kept in mind while visiting.

  • 4/5 Sri Nidhi R. 10 months ago on Google
The view from the lighthouse is truly breathtaking with the panoramic view of the city on one side and the expanse of the ocean stretching all the way up to the horizon on the other side. Surely worth visiting! I've reduced one star for the way it has been maintained but it is still worth visiting to check it off of your list of things to do in Chennai!
