The mess is across 2 floors. Great for south Indian cuisines - meals, Biriyani and more. The place is famous for the Kerala dishes. The fish items are simply yumm. The place is ALWAYS crowded. And loud. But anything for good food! Service can get a bit slow because of all the rush. But it's worth it. Parking is a menace. You can park on the road for 2wheelers. If you have a car, better take a cab and get dropped.

Planned to visit this place for a long time. But, after going through the lot of reviews. I was totally confused. Either I should go or not. But we went there yesterday and ordered meals n biriyani. Biriyani was good. They have only veg meals. All non veg gravies and starters we have to order separately. For gravy we have two options either fish or mutton. Personally I didn't like their fish gravy. It was so watery. I loved their Mutton curry. I was more like Mutton kuruma. Regarding starters they have multiple options. We ordered Mutton Sukka, Prawn thokku, Brain masala, Omelet n Vanjaram fish fry(Most thinnest Vanjaram fish I have ever seen). Omelet was OK. But all the other starters were great. Comparing to other mess their rates are bit higher but no so high as exaggerator by so many reviewers. Note: Since the hotel is located at a narrow street please don't go there by car. If you're coming by car plz park the car some where near MLA hostel or Kalaivanar Arangam.

If you’re a first timer to this place and follow Google you will end up at different location. It’s better to ask some Auto Anna/shop keepers to get here. It’s quite busy during lunch hours. Only mutton meals and fish meals were available with lot of starters like mutton AK curry, chicken fry, mutton brain, prawn fry and Vanjaram fry. If you love non veg meals, it’s a must place for you to try.

The mess is located opposite to the Chepauk stadium and is an excellent option for lunch and has a different varieties of vegetarian and non vegetarian side dishes Tried the fish gravy, chicken and mutton gravy as well as the prawns roast. The fried fish was one of the best dishes. All these dishes were so hot which gave it a special taste . They served in banana leaf which adds to the aesthetic! It is difficult to reach the place however it is worth the visit. Also parking is difficult. Better is to park along the main road and walk till the place. The place is always crowded and their food has a huge demand. The early you come the more easier it is to find a seat

Very good quality food. Bit pricey. But worth it. Had meals, prawn fry and omelette. Prawn fry tasted so good. Omlette is also so good Thier fish curry was so tasty. Not even a two wheeler can be parked in front of the hotel. Very crowded during peak lunch hour. Service is fast. All types of payments are accepted.

This place can only be found with word of mouth, because it is a hidden place right inside the narrow lane. We had to go up and down the road because getting a parking is most difficult. We had meals with Fish as the choice. The food is served in plantation leaf and they there is rice served first. Later as the side dishes do the fish gravy is served. Then the best part is a huge piece of sear fish beautifully cooked. It's so tasty and yummy. Simply the best Thali meals. We can also choose to have different items like prawns, chicken etc. Initially we had to wait for few minutes to get a seat. Later it gets very crowded. Service is good _

Food is awesome and the way they treated us and each and every customer as friendly and regular customers. We tried mutton fry/Fish fry/prawn thokku. Quantity is very less to have and prices are got higher from.the last visit before covid. Now the ambience is quite better and we could see a lot of regular customers in the Nair mess. One of the most wanted to try non veg hotels in Chennai. Negative feedback for parking As they don't have parking for this hotel even for 2 wheelers we have to park on the street.

Nair mess is one of the best restaurants in and around the M A Chidambaram stadium locality. The food which they serve is authentic South Indian cuisine. I also love the taste and the hospitality. You get stomach full of food in a very decent amount. Love the non-veg meal in particular (Rice, Fish Curry, omelettes, prawns fry, chicken 65, mutton 65, rasam, and so on..) they also have biriyani and other parota as well! A must visit restaurant if you’re looking for a homely meal!

After seeing a lot of reviews and recommendations, I along with my Chennai colleague visited this place. They have 2 floors of seating space. On to the food. The food is served on a banana leaf. We opted for basic veg meals, which includes white rice along with sambar, sabji, pickle but without papad. We topped that with King fish fry, mutton sukka, prawns masala, mutton curry, fish curry and buttermilk. King fish is very thinly sliced and very tasty. Mutton Sukka was also very tasty. I found the fish curry to be a bit tangy for my taste. Prawns masala was also average. Overall the taste was good. The place has a bit of fish stink, which is generally there in a fish restaurant except few restaurants. The veg meals is unlimited. However, the other side dishes which are ordered extra come in small portions (typically sufficient for 1 person) along with smaller price tags. This helped me taste multiple items for a reasonable price. I would recommend visiting this place for non-veg food, specially for the seer fish fry and mutton sukka.

Very good food.. Authentic taste. Best place for non-veg lovers. Very tasty. Yummy food but bit costly. Only sambar rasam, kootu poriyal, pickle and moor available. No veg side dishes nor appalam.

This place serves Kerala style food. The food platter is very delicious, they serve vegetarian & non-vegetarian food. They have good variety in fish , chicken & mutton. Only concern is that the non-veg items are expensive as per the quantity. This place is 1.2KM from Chepauk railway station.

Not as per expectation. But just ok. No choice of fish or variety. Only one option was available. The other curries with the meals were also nothing to boast about. Surely there are much better options around

Warm welcoming place abuzz with people during lunch time. Must try is Prawn roast, Vanjiram fish fry and Mutton chukka along with meals. Very delicious and yumm!!quantity for the non-veg is less, maybe bcoz of the good quality!!! Although closing time as per Google is 3pm, they make time for customers until we finish our meals heartily.. timing extends until 4-4.30pm for closing during evenings and reopen again for dinner.

We had meals, mutton liver and fish gravy. The taste is good but the quantity is very less. In menu the dish cost looks cheaper but if look at the quantity you know the reality. I took my family all the way from Egmore to Cheapak to have food at this mess but disappointed. Because in mess I expect atleast non veg gravy to be provided with meals. Other than that it's ok.

The place has history written all over it, from the by-lane that it's located in, to the way the restaurant is laid out. I can imagine what it must have been when the legendary MGR may have visited here. The food was average, they served me a beetroot prep, a mixed veg prep and a fish gravy to go with the steamed rice. And of course the pickle. I ordered a seer fish fry to 'indulge'. The fish fry and the first curry were nice although the vegetarian options were average at best. Oh yes, and I also called for an omelette alongside (not in the pic) as everyone around me was ordering one. Well, one can't go wrong with a freshly made masala omelette, complete with fresh green chillie, yummmm! The service team were Bengalis, speaking in tamil 🤩, they seemed totally localised and full of energy and speed. Overall a nice place to experience!

Tried Meals with Mutton chukka, liver fry and Chicken 65. The taste was average. Quantity of the sides were very low, and more than half of it was just ginger and garlic. Can’t believe why people gave much positive reviews. Scammer mess will be apt.

Awesome hotel especially for vanjaram fish. Literally you can see a vanjaram / king fish in every plate in this restaurant. Must try and also other items like chicken 65, mutton and much more. Nice hotel and must visit in chennai if u r a non veg lover. Rating 4/5 since crowd management is bad and non ordered. Needs a token system or proper waiting system to understand the crowd when they will get the table next. We are forced to wait for long and be desperate for a table on our own which is bad and May irriatate some people. Especially large families. Otherwise it’s the awesome hotel !

The meals was good and fish fry was very spicy and crispy. We ordered prawns and talakari both were tasty but the quantity was very less. They have 2 floors, the GF is non AC and FF is AC hall. The hotel is inside a narrow lane, hence there is very limited parking space for 2 wheelers. Any 4 wheelers must be parked on the main road.

Superb taste, quality food. Good ambiance and service also good. This is situated opp Chepak stadium and inside a small street but neatly maintained restaurant. Crowded during peak hours but team is doing good job. Food is slightly Kerala based taste but good and healthy too.

This is undoubtedly one of the best place for some wholesome meals and biryani. The fact is most of you already know how good their meals is and you'll be stepping out to try their meals right now. Let me tell you, their mutton biryani is great too 😍 Nalla veetla senja biryani maari, tharamaa irukum! Do give them a try!! Their egg omlette was the star of the show. They make it in coconut oil which almost gives like a fatty flavour to it. I was surprised to see how well coconut oil and egg worked together.

Parking is a pain even if you have a bike because there is very little to no space. Cant park car anywhere near. Meals had just 2 veggies and I chose mutton gravy, it was decent. Nothing remarkable. Fish fry is 270,theva illadha oru expense for a very thin slice of fish. Omelette was good. Nothing that great, I think it’s the brand image that makes people try this place.

Had lunch with friends here. It's total waste of money. Not worth the hype. Taste is below average and the side dish given for meal is waste. They didn't even give appalam. They scam in name of Suraputtu.. it is literally carrot poriyal.

Running 40+ years, this eatery is serving hearty meals which has the typical home good feeling/ touch to it We tried the mutton meals With following side dishes Mutton liver, omelette, fish fry, chicken 65, fish gravy and butter milk. All dishes tasted amazingly good. Staff were prompt and polite. Hand wash area is hygienic. Ambience is simple and decent. Will surely be back to try more of what they have to offer.

Great food but I felt it was way too expensive for me. We had the meals along with fish curry, fish fry and mutton sukka. The meals was just like any other place. Nothing too good about it. The fish fry was too good and was charged 210 per piece. We ended up paying approximately 1350 for 4 of us. I feel it is worth visiting once. Good luck!

It's overhyped. One of the old mess and a famous one - indeed. But the food taste, quantity is a huge let down. They charge 120 for a meal(100 if you go for non AC.(The AC first floor charges higher than the ground floor seating.) You get rice, one poriyal, one kootu, pickle, sambhar, rasam and butter milk. No non-veg gravies provided... duh!!!! All were kind of bland and tasted so and so only. Each of the gravy is priced from 80+.. you get an ice cream Bowl kind of quantity with one meat piece in it. They refill gravy alone if needed. The fish gravy was watery and lacked the tanginess. We ordered suraputtu (₹80) and eral thokku(₹90). I have never in my life seen such a small dhonnais being used in my life. It's sufficient to hold one standard round gulab jamun with jeera. That's it. Sura puttu contained lot of carrot (who puts carrot in sura puttu? That too in such proportions?) Eral thokku at least tasted like usual eral thokku nothing special with hardly 10 small eral. Mutton biriyani is also over priced. Only two normal size meat pieces, which were tender though. Quantity is okayish but they stuffed egg in that small bowl again.. looked like mushroom pulao but tasted okayish. Literally zero parking. Park your vehicle near stadium and take a short walk. The place is too costly for the quantity that they serve and taste is average. I wonder why ppl praise such a place. I understand taste differs but this is a total different level. Andhra mess does a great job than this place.

Little difficult to reach, no parking. Other than that the place is wonderful. Fish curry was wonderful. Mutton curry had little too much of coconut, though different taste. Quantity of Mutton Chukka and liver is very less for price. Taste is good. Overall exciting experience

Nair Mess has the best impressions. Delicious dishes , loads of varities , good hospitality. Recommend to try Mutton Briyani, prawn Thokku, Vanjaram Fry and Omelette.

  • 4/5 Manigandan S. 2 years ago on Google
Like all authentic old restaurant, there are more servers and the wait timing of our order is less. BUT, the quantity of food is OKAY and the taste is also not that much masala filled when compared to other big restaurant and its price. Best thing is that, they are offering free water bottles due to COVID 👍

  • 4/5 Rohan R. 9 months ago on Google
Nair mess is really well known for their food. As always the restaurant was bustling and busy. Their food is really delicious and filling. The mutton biryani was so tasty and lipsmacking. The meals were great. The fish curry, mutton curry, prawn masala, mutton masala, and liver fry were full of flavours and cooked well. Their fish fry and omelette is famous and a definite must have while visiting here. The staff are efficient and friendly. Really helpful and hospitable. Service is extremely quick. Only drawback is that they do not serve chilled water or papadam / appalams

Quantity is okay but taste is good. Vanjaram fry is best. Costly but must try. They serve all varieties. 500rs per person if u are a foodie like me. Who wants to try three to four varieties.
